• How do I install fonts on Linux Mint?

  I have some external fonts called Eaglefeather (Frank Lloyd Wright fonts) and I want to install them on to my Linux machine running Linux Mint 7 (Ubuntu based). I can't seem to get them to install which looks to me like just copying them to the /usr/local/share/fonts directory.

• Uninstall Linux Mint without deleting partition?

  I've got a dual-boot system using Windows 7 and Linux Mint 13. When I first installed Mint using the regular Mint installer, the installer did not give me the option of partitioning my drive, presumably because my computer already had 4 partitions. I decided that I wanted to uninstall Mint and opt for Ubuntu instead, but I have no idea how to remove Mint! Every guide I look at tells me to just delete/reformat the Linux partition... But in my case, no separate partition exists.

• Microphones not working on Apple macbook Air 1,1 (Early 2008) under Linux

  I'm running Linux on an mba. I can't make the microphones (neither external nor internal) work. I test using alsamixer and arecord -d 5 test-mic.waw together with aplay test-mic.waw It seems there is a problem with kernel trying to decipher Apple (intentionally) corrupted 'bios', in particular the mic pins are wrongly assigned. As far as we are concerned here, is there any difference between using EFI and BIOS-compatibility mode? (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook where they claim to have everything working out of the box on mba1,1) A nice proposal would be to compile the latest Linux kernel and run hda-jack-retask to find the right configuration (in the case of Realtek codec, the missing things I'm supposed to check are either some vendor-specific COEF verbs, EAPD or GPIO setup.), and then come up with a kernel patch to address the issue. Since I'm not that familiar with this last part of the story, can anyone help me through this process? • Favorite tricks with linux kernel boot parameters?

  Most linux bootloaders let you edit the kernel boot command line before booting. There are often lots of parameters available -- Knoppix, for instance, has a list on their Knoppix Cheat Codes page -- but most are applicable only to compatibility and special situations. A few are hidden gems. Common usages of these codes are to boot to single-user mode, alter screen mode or drivers, or to specify an alternative root directory. Other more exotic uses are possible. Some linux distributions let you copy the boot cd into ram. Others (e.g., Ubuntu) let you use preseed files to clone installs when setting up multiple systems -- useful when installing a lab full of computers without having to baby sit each install. What other tricks have you found useful in system installs, repairs, backups, restores, establishing temporary servers, or other tasks? To add your favorite trick to the list: As much of the code for these options goes on either in initrd, or in a service handler that detects the kernel parameters, please list *(1) the kernel boot line parameter, (2) what it does, (3) the linux distribution and any required packages to activate the feature*. • How to install QEMU on Damn Small Linux?

  i'm trying to install QEMU on a Damn Small Linux installation in order to emulate pentium features in a 486 computer. Though DSL was descontinued, it's the only linux that runs reasonably on the 486 processor, most recent kernels doesn't even boot on 486 architecture. I tried Tiny Core Linux, but it doesn't work in 486, so i seem to have no escape here. The most recent image of DSL is from 2008, it uses kernel 2.4.x, and i couldn't find a way to compile QEMU on it. Firstly, it lacks several compile tools needed for compiling it, and, it have several dependency problems. I tried some pre-compiled packages, but the only one that worked was a QEMU 5.2 RPM package (it didn't had dependency problems), and it was way too old, it wasn't capable of running windows yet, it just gave me the option of emulating a code, not a full OS as windows, and it also didn't give me the option to choose which architecture i wanted it to emulate (-cpu option). Can anyone help me with this? Also, if someone can think of some alternative to it, i'd be grateful. Thanks.

• Linux Mint reset display resolution from console

  I have a Linux Mint 13 Xfce in a VMware Workstation 8 VM and set the resolution from 800x600 to 1280x768 and now I get permanently logged out when I try to login. I knew how to get back to my old resolution back in the xorg.conf days but Linux Mint now uses xrandr which won't display any displays when running # xrandr because X is not running (of course not - I can't login over GUI). I know that there are configuration files in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ because I configured a debian based thinclient's resolution in a file called /etc/X11/Xsession.d/91configure_display but that file doesn't exist in my Linux Mint VM. So, how do I reset my X screen resolution from console? Edit: I forgot to tell you that I can't change resolution in console: # xrandr -s 800x600 Can't open display This message appears every time I use xrandr or xrandr -s *resolution* Update: I tried what bWowk suggested: # export DISPLAY=:0.0 # xrandr -s 800x600 No protocol specified No protocol specified Can't open display :0.0 So, that doesn't work either. Isn't there a configuration file that is executed every time X starts? X is running btw - ps aux | grep X shows one process /usr/bin/X running.

• Linux Sound Drivers - Recompiling kernel with ehcd-hcd module

  I just installed Linux Mint and I am trying to get my usb soundcard to work. I am completely new to Linux so I have only been learning about all the important parts of the OS this afternoon. No one I know has compiled kernel so I can't ask anyone. I am following instructions on this site: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Benutzer/BigMc#Final-setup-of-US-122L-US-144 "Recompile your Kernel with ehcd-hcd as a module: Instructions for Ubuntu (german) Change "Device Drivers - USB support - EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support)" to "M" when configuring. Make sure you also install the kernel headers." I know how to do any of these processes. Someone mentioned a package manager. Is recompiling basically in layman's terms reinstallation? Where do I go to the change device drivers? Cheers Edit: I am attempting to be able to use my Tascam US-144 on Linux Mint. Apparently, to use it properly it has to regress to functionality of a former unit (US-122), so according to the instructions a USB port has to be USB 1.0, rather than USB 2.0. I've tried using that ndis** programme for wireless drivers but with no success.
