• http requests, using sprites and file sizes -

  Hi all I'm in the process of finding out all about sprites and how they can speed up your pages. So I've used spriteMe to create a overall sprite image which is 130kb, this is made up of 14 images with a combined total size of about 65kb So is it better to have one http request and a file size of 130kb or 14 requests for a total of 65kb? Also there is a detailed image which has been put into the spite which caused it's size to go up by about 60kb odd, this used to be a seperate jpg image which was only 30kb. Would I be better off having it seperate and suffering the additional request?

• 12.04 Install Freeze, Blank Cursor Page

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 via a live CD and most recently with the windows installer I found on line. The windows installer seemed to be working; I selected the partitioned portion of the drive on which to install Ubuntu and started the install process. The process freezes on a page with a flashing cursor and nothing else displayed. I have read about similar problems but have not been able to implement any of the solutions people have discussed. Any ideas on what might be hanging up the process, or how to get a better idea of what is causing the problem would be helpful. If anyone has had this problem and has a solution it would be GREATLY appreciated!

• Is it "acceptable" for a sub domain to be hyphenated?

  I am putting together a site for a portal. Some of the subdomains have rather long names and I am thinking that maybe I should use hyphens to make the subdomain names more readable. For instance: alternative-medicine.mysite.com instead of alternativemedice.mysite.com However, I can't recall ever seing a hyphenated subdomain - is this because it is generally frowned upon - or are there technical (SEO) reasons why this appears to be the case? In short, will hyphenating my subdomains have a negative impart on SEO?

• Page not found in browsers

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04.1, last upgraded from 12.04 I'm using mts mblaze to access internet. Two days ago, I was using vpn on my system, suddenly cisco disconnected & my system hung while I was accessing my office system. I didnt' have any other idea, so I forcibly shut down the system. After that, connection is made, but firefox or chromium both don't find any page. I think there's some problem with the system package. Please let me know a good solution. Regards, Chetan

• How do I stop Google indexing my main page as https [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: https:// search results appearing on Google for purely http:// site 2 answers Due to historic reasons, we have things set up so that "www.mydomain.com" redirects to "store.mydomain.com". This has worked perfectly fine until recently, when Google appears to be sending visitors to "https:// www.mydomain.com" which doesn't have an SSL-certificate (and never has). Strangely, its only the first link that goes to "https:// www.mydomain.com", all other links point correctly to "http:// store.mydomain.com". Because there is no certificate on the "www" version, users are getting an error message. How do I make Google revert to pointing the main link at "http:// store.mydomain.com" (or even "http:// www.mydomain.com.") If I remove "https:// www.mydomain.com" from Google webmaster tools, will this also remove the redirected page ("http:// store.mydomain.com)? Thanks.

  I have an internal section in my Joomla only for "Registered" users. There they can edit preferences. Multiple users can access the same preferences (different stakeholders). Now I have "smithcorp" and "smithcorp_guest". They should both be able to view the same things, but "smithcorp_guest" shouldn't be able to edit the preferences. Is there a way to forbid "smithcorp_guest" access to this page? I have only seen access regulation via the user level, i.e. unregistered, registered, admin. Thanks, MrB

• How do I interpret direct traffic that lands on random pages?

  Looking at yesterday, according to Google Analytics, I got six direct visitors to my site (their source/medium is direct/(none)). Only one ended up at the actual domain. The other five ended up at miscellaneous foo.com/xyz.html. I did not send out links to people by email, and I'm not sure how likely it is the people would have copy/pasted the URLs. How do the visitors end up there? Is there a way to better capture where they might be coming from?

• Blog: Search results prefer index page over content pages.

  I have a typical blog that has recent posts on the main page, and each post's title links to a page that only shows that one article and comments and such. I was looking through some of the keywords used to get to my site and I was noticing that some of the searches would only show my main page, and not the page for the article. If users have to find the article by scrolling through the main page, it just makes it more difficult. Is there some way that I can tell search engines to rank the content page higher than my index page? Or can I do something else like not display the full text of the posts on the main page?

• How to pass information across domains to ask for newsletter only once?

  Lets assume following scenario, I have two sites: example1.com example2.com When user visits 1 there is a prompt "please signup to a newsletter". Same thing happens when user visits 2. However when navigating from 1 to 2 I don't want signup form to be shown. • Framework for interaction between web-page and server-side script

  I want to make a web-page that will have several controls elements, among which there are elements like check-boxes, radio-buttons, "range selectors" (one can specify the min and max value, like it is done when you select range for prices in the online markets). The new values shall be sent to the "server-side", once changed (without any Submit buttons etc), and the "server-side" can return something (one or more numbers, etc). Does anyone know a good ajax-like framework that allows (with minimal adaptation / changes) to make such solution in an easy way? It will be good if the server-side of existing solution will be in Perl (not a big deal, but I know it much better than PHP or something else). Set of controls might change and depend on other parameter, so adding one extra element should not cause rewriting the whole thing. P.S.: I haven't working in this area for quite a while, so not aware of existing solutions in this area, and don't want to invent the wheel and write everything from scratch for something that already exist (at least, I hope so). • Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

• Collapsible menu and amount of links in a web page

  One of my pages contain three levels of a collapsible menu (JS + CSS from mycssmenu.com). There are a dozen first level items displayed to users, each one with various second level items, and finally a lot of third level items, each one containing a related link. This generates a lot of internal links (300+). Because of SEO should I change the way the collapsible menu is displayed to reduce link amount? What do you suggest? I would like to avoid users to have to open a new page just to only see what are third level items and eventually follow one of its links.

  I want to host one way webcam Q&A's/AMA's and embed it on my sites webpage. I must be able to have specified hosts for these Q&A's connect quickly and easily to the webpage, and read user posted messages (questions) for interaction. I know there are some systems out there, like tinychat, but I'm unaware if there is anything exactly used for what I am looking for. Perhaps requiring a specific account/password before allowing streaming on the page, where I can email the host a password or directions to create an account to begin live streaming. • SharePoint 2010 slow page response time suddenly !

  Hello, One of my customers faced a problem that suddenly their SharePoint portal was loading extremely slower than usual. After some basic troubleshooting I did not find anything suspicious in the ULS logs, IIS logs or even Event logs. After that, I came to the part that I like most which is capturing a memory dump for the IIS process and analyzing the threads running. I searched for any common mistakes like looping a large list, calling a remote web service but couldn't find any. After a deep analysis of the memory dump (Which was done by an Escalation Engineer for SharePoint), it seems that the farm root certificate was missing and therefore was trying to validate it from the internet every time the user requests to load the page and this was the resolution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2625048 Cheers,

  I'm working on an ASP.NET project in which the vast majority of the forms are generated dynamically at run time (form definitions are stored in a DB for customizability). Therefore, I have to dynamically create and add my controls to the Page every time OnLoad fires, regardless of IsPostBack. This has been working just fine and .NET takes care of managing ViewState for these controls. protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { base.OnLoad(e); RenderDynamicControls() } private void RenderDynamicControls(){ //1. call service layer to retrieve form definition //2. create and add controls to page container } I have a new requirement in which if a user clicks on a given button (this button is created at design time) the page should be re-rendered in a slightly different way. So in addition to the code that executes in OnLoad (i.e. RenderDynamicControls()), I have this code: protected void MyButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { RenderDynamicControlsALittleDifferently() } private void RenderDynamicControlsALittleDifferently() (){ //1. clear all controls from the page container added in RenderDynamicControls() //2. call service layer to retrieve form definition //3. create and add controls to page container } My question is, is this really the only way to accomplish what I'm after? It seems beyond hacky to effectively render the form twice simply to respond to a button click. I gather from my research that this is simply how the page-lifecycle works in ASP.NET: Namely, that OnLoad must fire on every Postback before child events are invoked. Still, it's worthwhile to check with the SO community before having to drink the kool-aid. On a related note, once I get this feature completed, I'm planning on throwing an UpdatePanel on the page to perform the page updates via Ajax.
