• Can't install Ubuntu in a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought an HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop... I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu... When I insert the live CD, it shows the ubuntu start screen and then everything goes black (no cursor... Just like the screen is switched off (but the system is working)) When i try to install from the USB, it says Live media is not found! Some times it also give a black screen like the CD... Have any idea how to fix this? Thanks

• All my bandwidth eaten up - report included

  I have my network bandwidth eaten up totally. Whenever I connect my network, without any application being opened it is always full. I have prepared report of iftop, nethogs and network system monitor. iftop and nethogs My host IP is 192.168.1.203 and all the rest are not known though I have tried to pin 192.168.1.105, it doesn't reply. If possible I would like to block the most disturbing IP which is 192.168.1.105 to block it. but don't know how.

• In C++, is it a reflection of poor software design if objects are deleted manually?

  With the advent of smart pointers, is it a sign of poor design if I see objects are deleted? I'm seeing some software components in our product that people are still doing this. This practice strikes me as un-idiomatic, but I need to be sure this is the industry consensus. I'm not starting a crusade but it'd be nice to be prepared theory wise. Edit: legit uses of delete, Klaim mentioned the object pool use case. I agree. Bad examples of using delete, I am seeing many new's in constructor or start() and corresponding delete's in the destructor or stop(), why not use scoped_ptr? It makes the code cleaner.

• How do I design a game framework for fast reaction to user input?

  I've played some games at cca 30 fps and some of them had low reaction time - cca 0.1sec. I hadn't knew why. Now when I'm designing my framework for crossplatform game, I know why. Probably they've been preparing new frame during rendering the previous. RENDER 1 | RENDER 2 | RENDER 3 | RENDER 4 PREPARE 2 | PREPARE 3 | PREPARE 4 | PREPARE 5 I see first frame when second frame is being rendered and third frame being prepared. If I react in that time to 1st frame it will result in forth frame. So it takes 3/FPS seconds to appear results. In 30 fps it would be 100ms, what is quite bad. So i'm wondering what should I design my framework to response to user interaction quickly?

• "Operating system not found" after upgrading to 13.10

  I own a Thinkpad X121e and I upgraded its Ubuntu from 13.04 64bit to 13.10 64bit using the Update Manager. When the upgrade process suggested to restart the system, I restarted the computer and now it says "Operating system not found" after a very brief splash screen. The splash screen says something like (too brief to see everything): Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 ... For Atheros ethernet Controller ... Check cable connection! PXE-MOF: Exiting INTEL PXE ROM I prepared a startup USB disk using Ubuntu 13.10. I tried the startup USB and it works very well on other computers. So I changed the booting order of X121e and tried all three USB slots, all said "Operating System not found" without any splash screen. I also tried using startup USB with 12.04 LTS. Same results. I do not really want to reinstall the system now. Any hints on how to proceed?

• New Job Over Budget

  I recently started a new job as a contract developer, and my non-developer boss of about two weeks ago gave me the task to re-create an app from another language and developer that he will reuse with multiple clients (replacing the front-end), that I estimated would take longer than his estimate of 12 hours. Two weeks later, I'm 230% over-budget. I admit this was my 2nd web app, I had been a wordpress developer in the past, so I am somewhat new to code igniter, but not shabby php by any means. My boss hired me knowing this and I was clear that it would take longer than his 12 hours. He's seen me in the office on task for 2 weeks, he should be somewhat prepared for this bill. Do I expect the full amount of hours, or do I filter against how much of learned? Can I bill for research as a developer?

  I wrote to one company near my university (starting in September) and they responded that they will probably hire me from the work I have already done (some projects and Euler problems solving). It's for 15 hours/week or so in order to not fall behind uni work. They require Python, SQL, XML and a good idea about how the Web works. The job role involves acquiring data from the Web and supplying it as search results for flight seekers (people). I am eager to learn but still, what can I do to become prepared for this? I ask because I tend to gravitate from one technology to the other, trying out things but never mastering it properly. What Web technologies are involved in such a job role? I have two months and want to learn as much as possible because there is much info but I have no idea where to start.

  Say I have to have terms of use on site, a place the text as marked up html. Where it is better to prepare this document initially if it is going to placed to the web? Considering that such documents are prepared and changed by lawyers, it is not very applicable for them to use text editor. And it is not very efficient to manually process content to prepare it for the web as it is changed. For now my solution is: Prepare document text in google docs keeping some simple structure (title, ordered lit of features, simple paragraphs), save as html (it will contain some unnecessary markup) and then use custom conversion tool (some script) to convert saved html from google docs to simple html and inject new version to the site. What is common practiceses for this problem? What is the workflow of preparing and publishing such documents.

• How to export a C++ class library to C# using a dll?

  In my previous revision game engine I deported major functions for the game editor for C#. Now, I'm beginning to revise the game engine with a static library. There's a already dynamic library created in C++ to use DLLEXPORT for C#. Just now I want to test out the newer functions and created a DLL file from C++. Because the DLL contains classes I was wondering how would I be able to use DLL Export. Would I do this: [DLLEXPORT("GameEngine.dll", EntryPoint="SomeClass", Conventional=_stdcall)] static extern void functionFromClass(); I have a feeling it's probably DLLImport and not DLLExport. I was wondering how would I go about this? Another way I was thinking was because I already have the DLL in C++ prepared already to go the C# Class Library. I could just keep the new engine as a lib, and link the lib with the old DLL C++ file. Wouldn't the EntryPoint be able to point to the class the function is in?

  first of all, I want to create shell script to start/stop downloads in torrent client. I don't need CLI but if you know how I can do that with CLI using shell script then it is okay.   One of the questions that comes up frequently, is "Is it worthwhile to report errors?".Last weekend, after installing the latest StyleCop I loaded up my copy of Power Collections. I found that StyleCop was now correctly picking up a lot of missing "this." statements, however there were now a number of false positives. Anticipating the need to submit sample code, I cleaned the solution and zipped it up.I reported this at http://stylecop.codeplex.com/discussions/357319.  The stylecop administrator promoted this report to a work item (see http://stylecop.codeplex.com/workitem/7285) and I uploaded the previously prepared Zip file. The StyleCop team was able to locate the problem and it is "Fixed in upcoming 4.7.27".The conclusion:Report errors!  Prepare sample code illustrating the error.

• Remove drive partitions before Installing 12.04?

  I have an old box and want to switch to Ubuntu 12.04. It has two hard drives. The first is a 40 gig disk that runs Windows XP; the other is 80 gigs partitioned into 40, 20, and 20 gigs. I am prepared to abandon Windows altogether and everything stored on the drives. So my question is, do I just install from CD/DVD onto the C drive? Or onto one of the partitions in the other disk first and then uninstall Windows? What will happen to the partitions on the second disk, which I don't particularly see a need for? • Release roadmap with scrum

  I need to prepare an internal product release road-map for product being built via scrum methodology, and have some difficulty correlating sprints to the road-map. The main problem is that as I don't have effort estimations for every story, because these prepared immediately before each sprint, so I don't know what will make into which sprint. I'm fine with changing the road-map as the development goes on, but need it to give at least some indication when things planned to be released. When I first started, I learned the basics of C++ from a book and I started to learn things by myself from there on. Nowadays I'm much more experienced than I was a year ago.
