What do I need to get a job with a major game company?

I've been recently working with DirectX and getting familiar with game engines, sub-systems and have done game development for the last 5 years. I have a real question for those whom have worked in larger game making companies before. How is it possible to get to into these big game creators such as Ubisoft, Infinity Ward or EA. I'm not a beginner in my field and I'm going to produce a real nice 2D platform with my team this year, which is the result of 5 years 2D game creation experience. I'm working with prepared engines such as Unity3D or Game Maker software and using .Net with C# to write many tools for our production and proceeding in my way but never had a real engine programming experience 'till now. I'm now reading good books around this topic but I wanted to know: Is it possible to become an employee in big game company by just reading books? I mean beside having an active mind and new ideas and being a solution solver.

I have been working with Hibernate for a fews years now, and I want to solidify and demonstrate my knowledge by taking the Oracle JPA certification, also known as: "Oracle Certified Expert, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 Java Persistence API Developer (CX-310-094)" There is a training course provided by Oracle: "Building Database Driven Applications with JPA (SL-370-EE6)" But this costs $1800 and I think it would be overkill for my needs. Ideally, I would like a self study guide that will cover everything in the exam. I have looked for books and these seem like possibilities: Pro JPA 2: Mastering the Java Persistence API (Expert's Voice in Java Technology) and Beginning Java EE 6 with GlassFish 3 2nd Edition (Expert's Voice in Java Technology) But these aren't checklist type study guides as far as I am aware. I found the official SCJP study guide very useful, but I think the equivalent text for the JPA exam isn't out yet. If anyone has taken this exam, I would be grateful to hear how you prepared for it. C# Interview Preparation - References?

This is a specific question relating to C#. However, it can be extrapolated to other languages too. While one is preparing for an interview of a C# Developer (ASP.NET or WinForms or ), what would be the typical reference material that one should look at? Are there any good books/interview question collections that one should look at so that they can be better prepared? This is just to know the different scenarios. For example, I might be writing SQL Stored Procedures and Queries, but I might stumble when asked suddenly Given an Employee Table with the following column(s). EmployeeId, EmployeeName, ManagerId Write a SQL Query which will get me the Name of Employee and Manager Name? NOTE: I am not asking for a Question Bank so that I can learn by rote what the questions are and reproduce them (which, obviously will NOT work!)

DNS and Wildcard CNAME

Whenever I attempt to make a record for *.schneiderdonnelly.com.au and CNAME it, I get two errors: You can't mix CNAME/MX records together using the same hostname. Domain root's cannot be CNAME's, however you can web-forward this record to www.schneiderdonnelly.com.au instead for the same effect. I've read it's possible so why can't I make it work? Using DLLEXPORT to export DLL function With Class to C#

In my previous revision game engine I deported major functions for the game editor for C#. Now, I'm beginning to revise the game engine with a static library. There's a already dynamic library created in C++ to use DLLEXPORT for C#. Just now I want to test out the newer functions and created a DLL file from C++. Because the DLL contains classes I was wondering how would I be able to use DLL Export. Would I do this: [DLLEXPORT("GameEngine.dll", EntryPoint="SomeClass", Conventional=_stdcall)] static extern void functionFromClass(); I have a feeling it's probably DLLImport and not DLLExport. I was wondering how would I go about this? Another way I was thinking was because I already have the DLL in C++ prepared already to go the C# Class Library. I could just keep the new engine as a lib, and link the lib with the old DLL C++ file. Wouldn't the EntryPoint be able to point to the class the function is in?

Do you have a plan for your digital assets after you die?

After reading this question I remembered of a news article about some websites that manage your online identity after you pass away. Have you planned what to do with your digital assets once you go? I'd imagine that your online footprint is as important as anything you leave of material value. I mean, what would be the difference of that open-source project that you created to the money and savings that you had? How would you like to have your identity managed after you pass away? Would you prefer to go "off the grid"? It's a sensitive topic and I never met anyone who prepared for it.

How to apply a changelog file to packages in a PPA when building from recipe?

When to start thinking about scalability?

I'm having a funny but also terrible problem. I'm about to launch a new (iPhone) app. It's a turn-based multiplayer game running on my own custom backend. But I'm afraid to launch. For some reason, I think it might become something big and that its popularity will kill my poor lonely single server + MySQL database. On one hand I'm thinking that if it's growing, I'd better be prepared and have a scalable infrastructure already in place. On the other hand I just feel like getting it out into the world and see what happens. I often read stuff like "premature optimization is the root of all evil" or people saying that you should just build your killer game now, with the tools at hand, and worry about other stuff like scalability later. I'd love to hear some opinions on this from experts or people with experience with this. Thanks!

How much help should I give during technical interviews?

I'm asked to perform or sit in during many technical interviews. We ask logic questions and simple programming problems that the interviewee is expected to be able to solve on paper. (I would rather they have access to a keyboard, but that is a problem for another time.) Sometimes I sense that people do know how to approach a problem, but they are hung up by nervousness or some second-guessing of the question (they aren't intended to be trick questions). I've never heard my boss give any help or hints. He just thanks the interviewee for the response (no matter how good or bad it is) and moves on to the next question or problem. But I know something about the rabbit hole that defeat and nerves can lead you down, and how it disables your mind, and I can't help wondering if providing a little help now and then would ultimately help us end up with more capable programmers instead of more failed interviews. Should I provide hints and assistance for befuddled interviewees (and if so, how far should I go while still being fair to the more prepared candidates)?

Valentine's Day in sunny Ottawa, Ontario

Problem with ubuntu 12 install as dual boot

I went to instal ubuntu (version 12 ) in my laptop as dual boot with windows 7 the problem i've face is when i came to phase 4 that how i went to install it he tell me that i don't have any OS in my laptop !!!! + I already prepared a partition with system file EXT3 and SWAP for ubuntu. i really went to make the dual boot with windows . My laptp is 6730s compaq . Ther is 4 partitions : 1: where the OS is. NTFS 2: data file. NTFS 3: Empty 20 G space . EXT 3 4: SWAP linux.

how difficult to add vibration/feedback to a open source driving game

Hi, I'm looking to use SuperTuxKart as a basis for a PhD research project. A key requirement for the game is to provide vibration feedback through the controller (obviously dependant on the controller itself). I don't believe that the game currently includes this feature and I'm trying to get a feel for how big a challenge it would be to add. My background is as a J2EE and PHP developer/architect, so I don't know C++ as such, but am prepared to give it a crack if there are resources and guides to assist, and it's not a herculean task. Alternatively, if you know of any open source games that do include vibration feedback, please feel free to let me know! Preferably the game would be of the style that the player had to navigate a character (or character's vehicle) over a repeatable course/map. TIA, JD

Can't install Ubuntu on a HP DV6 Laptop

I just bought a HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop. I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu. But when I inserted the live CD, it showed the Ubuntu start screen and then everything went black. There was no cursor, everything just stayed black like the screen was switched off (but the system is running). When I tried to install from the USB, it said Live media is not found. Sometimes it also gave me a black screen like the CD. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

Is there a good example of the difference between practice and theory?

There has been a lot of posters advising that the best way to retain knowledge is to apply it practically. After ignoring said advice for several years in a futile attempt to accumulate enough theoretical knowledge to be prepared for every possible case scenario, the process which lead me to assembling a library that's easily worth ~6K, I finally get it. I would like to share my story in the hopes that others will avoid taking the same route that was taken by me. I've selected graphical format (photos with caption to be exact) as my media. Help me with your ideas, maybe a fragment of code, or other imagery that would convey a message of the inherent difference between practice and theory.

I am about to embark on an exquisite journey. I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding? Background: I am a web developer, so answers applicable to web development would be more appreciated than others.

GRUB- error: no such partition grub rescue and Error: No default or UI configuration directive found boot > on pendrive

I have dell inspiron, previously I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Windows 7 and made it dual boot. But since I want to upgrade my Ubuntu version and change the partition spacing, I deleted 11.10 partition directly and extended my hardrive space (Windows + Ubuntu) at that moment everything was fine. Then I prepared a 12.04 32bit USB and installed it . It was installed but isn't showing dual boot option like 11.10 and my machine directly boot into Windows 7. So instantly i again deleted my 12.04 partition . Now I login into Windows 7 but whenever I put USB ( with 12.04 ) to boot from it, I am facing error of "no such partition grub rescue" even though I try to put lower version(11.04) it showing another error "Error: No default or UI configuration directive found boot " I have reinstall Windows 7 and reformat all partition, still I am facing same error :(

How to convert a Bazaar repository to GIT repository?

We have a large bazaar repository and we want to convert it to a git repository. The bazaar repository contains the folders of each of the interns. Any documentation/code prepared by interns is committed in their directory so there are a huge number of commits. What steps should be performed to securely convert the bazaar repository to a git repository so that we do not lose any commit information. We firstly need to create a backup of the existing bazaar repository and then convert it. But when I try to run it on the actual server it gives me EOF error and crashes Starting export of 1036 revisions ... fatal: EOF in data (1825 bytes remaining) fast-import: dumping crash report to .git/fast_import_crash_11804 Edit 2: I also tried it on a new CentOS system and received the following error fatal: ambiguous argument 'HEAD': unknown revision or path not in the working tree. ffmpeg: cut multiple input files with seeking to one output file

I have list of video files (loaded from database), each with start and end time of requested interval: # file begin end v1.mp4 1:01 2:01 v2.mp4 3:02 3:32 v3.mp4 2:03 5:23 And I need to create single video file containing these intervals: [0:00]---v1---[2:00]---v2---[2:30]---v3---[5:50] I preffer usig ffmpeg, since it is installed on server. Caller program is written in PHP. It is easy to cut one input to one output (argument escaping removed for clarity): exec("ffmpeg -ss $begin -i $input_file -ss $begin -c copy $output_file"); I there any easier way than executing ffmpeg for each interval and then execute it once more to concatenate prepared clips together? I really do not like to have a lot of temporary files or dealing with complex process handling.
