  • A free Step by Step guide to learning Sparx Enterprise Architect

    - by Yogi Yang 007
I have just downloaded Sparx Enterprise Architect 7.5 but unfortunately I am not able to find a getting started guide or something like that. I have gone through official site of Sparx but there is not step by step guide to learning Sparx EA. I want a guide that will implement a small project and give instructions step by step so that I can understand and try out Sparx EA. I did find a few sites selling step by step guides but at this point of time I do not want to spend money on them.

  • Learning to write organized and modular programs

    - by Peter
I'm a computer science student, and I'm just starting to write relatively larger programs for my coursework (between 750 - 1500 lines). Up until now, it's been possible to get by with any reasonable level of modularization and object oriented design. However, now that I'm writing more complex code for my assignments I'd like to learn to write better code. Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources for learning about what sort of things to look for when designing your program's architecture so that you can make it as modularized as possible?

I've been trying to learn PHP OOP and have looked at multiple articles, but have yet to find a good resource for learning. I want to learn from the user of setters and getters, $this-, constructors, and so on...! Can anyone please suggest me something? I noticed MOST teachings leave out the explanation of $this-. I want to learn magic methods, decorators, encapsulation, etc... Feel free to suggest something that I haven't explicitly listed.

  • If you are a hard core .NET programmer, would you invest in learning Java

    - by GarbageGuy
Learning just another language is not much work. However, getting familiar with all the supporting libraries is veeeery expensive and actually you cannot go too far without that. Would you consider a worthy career investment to learn java once you already are an accepted professional of .NET or you would rather invest the same amount of energy to get deeper in the things you already know?

  • Android: Learning the platform, have any app suggestions?

    - by David
I'm beginning to learn mobile programming on the Android platform. I'm up for working with any particular base SDK. I just want to hear some suggestions from the community about what types of applications I should start with to help learn more advanced interactions with the platform. There are of course the Standard Hello World, calculator, etc. But by now I am bored with all of those. What do you all make when learning a new language?

    - by Dhawal
We are in web era standalone applications are almost gone everyone wants their internet application to run inside browser, programming languages like Ruby, Python and scala are becoming more and more mainstream. Sometimes I wonder what these programming language offer which make them top choice of IT companies, if I plan to become a freelance web developer is it worth learning C# or Java. I read beginner's book for both of them, but to master any of them require some time investment.

  • Learning C++ on Linux or Windows?

    - by ReDAeR
Hi, Since you 'should' learn C/C++ and as part of 'learn as much languages as possible', i decided to learn C++ in depth. My OS is Windows and my question is should i re-install Linux as a dual boot to learn C++ on Linux? Do i miss something if I develop in C++ only on the Windows platform? • Big Data – Various Learning Resources – How to Start with Big Data? – Day 20 of 21

    - by Pinal Dave
In yesterday’s blog post we learned how to become a Data Scientist for Big Data. In this article we will go over various learning resources related to Big Data. In this series we have covered many of the most essential details about Big Data. At the beginning of this series, I have encouraged readers to send me questions. One of the most popular questions is - “I want to learn more about Big Data. Where can I learn it?” This is indeed a great question as there are plenty of resources out to learn about Big Data and it is indeed difficult to select on one resource to learn Big Data. Hence I decided to write here a few of the very important resources which are related to Big Data. Learn from Pluralsight Pluralsight is a global leader in high-quality online training for hardcore developers.  It has fantastic Big Data Courses and I started to learn about Big Data with the help of Pluralsight. Here are few of the courses which are directly related to Big Data. Big Data: The Big Picture Big Data Analytics with Tableau NoSQL: The Big Picture Understanding NoSQL Data Analysis Fundamentals with Tableau I encourage all of you start with this video course as they are fantastic fundamentals to learn Big Data. Learn from Apache Resources at Apache are single point the most authentic learning resources. If you want to learn fundamentals and go deep about every aspect of the Big Data, I believe you must understand various concepts in Apache’s library. I am pretty impressed with the documentation and I am personally referencing it every single day when I work with Big Data. I strongly encourage all of you to bookmark following all the links for authentic big data learning. Haddop - The Apache Hadoop® project develops open-source software for reliable, scalable, distributed computing. Ambari: A web-based tool for provisioning, managing, and monitoring Apache Hadoop clusters which include support for Hadoop HDFS, Hadoop MapReduce, Hive, HCatalog, HBase, ZooKeeper, Oozie, Pig and Sqoop. Ambari also provides a dashboard for viewing cluster health such as heat maps and ability to view MapReduce, Pig and Hive applications visually along with features to diagnose their performance characteristics in a user-friendly manner. Avro: A data serialization system. Cassandra: A scalable multi-master database with no single points of failure. Chukwa: A data collection system for managing large distributed systems. HBase: A scalable, distributed database that supports structured data storage for large tables. Hive: A data warehouse infrastructure that provides data summarization and ad hoc querying. Mahout: A Scalable machine learning and data mining library. Pig: A high-level data-flow language and execution framework for parallel computation. ZooKeeper: A high-performance coordination service for distributed applications. Learn from Vendors One of the biggest issues with about learning Big Data is setting up the environment. Every Big Data vendor has different environment request and there are lots of things require to set up Big Data framework. Many of the users do not start with Big Data as they are afraid about the resources required to set up framework as well as a time commitment. Here Hortonworks have created fantastic learning environment. They have created Sandbox with everything one person needs to learn Big Data and also have provided excellent tutoring along with it. Sandbox comes with a dozen hands-on tutorial that will guide you through the basics of Hadoop as well it contains the Hortonworks Data Platform. I think Hortonworks did a fantastic job building this Sandbox and Tutorial. Though there are plenty of different Big Data Vendors I have decided to list only Hortonworks due to their unique setup. Please leave a comment if there are any other such platform to learn Big Data. I will include them over here as well. Learn from Books There are indeed few good books out there which one can refer to learn Big Data. Here are few good books which I have read. I will update the list as I will learn more. Ethics of Big Data Balancing Risk and Innovation Big Data for Dummies Head First Data Analysis: A Learner’s Guide to Big Numbers, Statistics, and Good Decisions If you search on Amazon there are millions of the books but I think above three books are a great set of books and it will give you great ideas about Big Data. Once you go through above books, you will have a clear idea about what is the next step you should follow in this series. You will be capable enough to make the right decision for yourself. Tomorrow In tomorrow’s blog post we will wrap up this series of Big Data. • Will learning ColdFusion help me advance my programming skills? [closed]

    - by chhantyal
Currently I am working with a small web development company. We use jQuery on front-end, Coldfusion for back-end and MySQL as our database. We just started to use HTML5 and CSS3. This is my first internship and job. I know the basics of Python and want to add Django or Ruby on Rails on my skills set. In addition, I want to advance my programming skills with Machine Learning, Compilers, NoSQL and Unix Hacking. I also find front end web development pretty interesting. Should I focus on front-end and become skilled on HTML5/CSS3/Javascript? Or dive into back-end learning ColdFusion. I will probably leave the company after a year since I want to work with great product start-ups. And I live in India, where ColdFusion is not popular. Will learning ColdFusion help me become better programmer?

  • Beginner learning assembly preserving esp after function calls

    - by Daniel
I'm a beginner learning some assembly, when preserving the ESP register before a function call does it matter if you do it by adding or subtracting? hard to explain, consider the following mov esi, esp sub esp, 12 // on 32bit OS this would mean that there are 3 arguments to the function // push, function call etc cmp esi, esp // should be the same or mov esi, esp // push, function call etc add esp, 12 cmp esi, esp // should be the same Also if for some reason the cmp fails, is it safe to do mov esp, esi to re-align the stack? Thanks EDIT: Also how come i need to do this for a call like sprintf, but MessageBox seems to fix ESP for me? How am i to know what function needs this and what doesn't?

  • Recommended resources for learning MS Expression Blend

    - by fastmonkeywheels
I've been designing applications using C# for some time now but I have the need to create a more custom application and Expression Blend was recommended to me. I've downloaded the free trial but it's a little fancier than I expected. I'm not a graphic designer and can't use photoshop to save my life, however I do have images provided by a graphic designer to use for this application. I'm looking for some good resources for learning Blend and using it as a front end to a C# application, much like I would a regular C# forum.

  • learning inkscape for webapp/website

    - by creativz
Hello, I'm quite impressed with Incskape, it's very powerfull. That's why I wanted to start learning it. But how should I start (to learn it efficiently)? Should I read a book (anybody can recommend me a good one?) or just (inefficiently) do some tutorials on the internet. I really want to learn it to make professional graphics for a webapp or website. So how should I tackle it? Thanks!
