• Updating Windows DNS records from a remote windows DNS server

  Does anyone know if it is possible for a windows 2003 DNS server to update the records for a domain so that it contains all the records of a domain of of a remotely based DNS server? Im almost certain that doesn't quite explain the problem so I shall illustrate with an example: We have two offices, both are based about 100 miles apart. One deals with IT (Intranet development etc.) while the other is a call centre that uses the Intranet systems. Currently each office has its own DNS server, with the IT office's and call centre's DNS servers containing entries for intranet site. The difference is that the IT DNS server records point to the various servers that host the Intranet sites (e.g. intranetsite1 - 192.168.1.10, intranetsite2 - 192.168.1.11) while all of the entries in the call centre's DNS point to the IT office's DNS server (intranetsite1 - [it office ip address], intranetsite2 - [it office ip address]). Is there any way that the call centre's DNS server could automatically add all DNS records hosted by the IT office's DNS, translating the IP addresses to the IP address of the IT office?

• untrusted (self-sign) certificate on android browser

  Hi all, Apologies for the brevity of this question but due to an unfortunate series of events, I've managed to brick my PC so am posting from my phone... We've just set up Windows Small Business Server 2008 at work which has an external web portal accessible via HTTPS. We haven't yet bought?installed any certificates. The portal provides access to email, sharepoint, remote desktop, etc.... (I'm aware some of these are never going to work on the phone) From firefox / other desktop browsers, this displays an "untrusted cert' warning which I can choose to ignore. When browsing from my mobile I get a popup notification which says. "A secure connection could not be established" when I OK this (my only option) I see the standard android-generated "unable to load page - has it moved?" Page. Does anyone know of a way to either accept the certificate temporarily or allow untrusted certificates generally? I'm aware that the latter option is non-ideal in the mid to long term but at the moment, I need to access the portal and am willing to either toggle settings as/when required or forego using the mobile for banking, etc... to mitigate my risk. In SQL 2005 I would added 2 linked servers both referencing itself with different names, each point to a different table. How do I do this in SQL 2008. • Problem with kde-filesystem when updating.

  Since 2-3 weeks, each time I update my fedora 11 box with yum, I get these messages. I tried to reinstall it. The re-installation was fine but I still get the messages when I yum update I didn't try to remove it with yum because it will remove more than 100 packages dues to dependencies. What else could I do ?

• Since updating to today's version of Skype on Win8, Skype won't even log in

  I am using the desktop (win32 not appstore) Skype on Windows 8. I accepted an auto-update today which now will not let me log into skype at all. I wiped out the AppData\Roaming\Skype folder because that's how you get Skype back in the past when it has gone stupid, but that didn't help either. I do not get any error message, just the circular progress indicator that lasts forever. (Okay, so far it's been 30 minutes. It may eventually time out yet.) Other ideas please? I tried the Windows 8 App Store Skype app (WinRT), which I hate, I guess I'll go back and install that for now. Update Skype 6.0.126 seems to be completely broken on my Win8 machine.

• WDS updating raid drivers in an already existing image WIM

  Here is my current setup. WDS installed on Server 2008 R2 for the new driverstore and multicast features. A Windows Server 2003 32bit Standard image built to support previous DL360 models. A new HP DL360 G6 which has a new raid controller in it. I need to add the driver for the raid controller into my Server 2003 32bit standard install image but I can't seem to figure out the correct method to do so. So far I've tried the following: Mounting the image and placing the drivers into the Sysprep drivers folder, adding the PCI device codes into the sysprep.inf file and committing the changes to the image. Pushing the image to a DL360 G4, ensuring the driver is in the correct locations and re-sysprepping the image. Hoping that the new driverstore feature would magically work with 2003 (a guy can dream cant he?) Is there some standard method that I can use to update this image with the new drivers or do I need to start from scratch with an entirely new build? Thanks in advance.

  I am looking for a power supply adapter for my USB Hub so it can support at least 2 bus-powered external hard drives. The hub's rating is 5 volts, 2 amperes. I would like to know if it would be OK to buy a power supply adapter rated at less than 2A. I've been looking for power supply adapters and the ones that do support 2A are more expensive (more expensive than the USB hub itself) compared to those that support less than 2A. Will power supply adapter that supports less than 2A (~1-1.5A) work fine to support two external hard drives? The external hard drives are both bus-powered Western Digital My Passport Essentials 250 GB. The OS is Windows XP SP3.

• Outlook 2010 hung on updating outlook.com email account

  For the past week, through restarts of Outlook, and even a bounce of my machine, Outlook has been hung synchronizing my outlook.com account, after having moved messages from a different email inbox into the outlook.com inbox. The old account does not have the moved message any more (those synched-out correctly). The new account does not have the moved messages when acessing via the webui - ie, they are stuck in just Outlook. My problem? I need to reimage this laptop for a friend I need Outlook to finish syncing all those messages out to the hosted email How can I force this to happen?

• Linux Ubuntu: Updating the GRUB menu

  So apparently there are 2 versions of Linux on my laptop(I have a dual boot system with Linux and Windows 8 but Linux is the master OS). One of them uses the Kernel version 3.11.0 whose headers + source code are incompatible with my wireless driver. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite with a Realtek RTL8188CE wireless lan.So the newer kernel version is still the first option on the menu and to get to Linux I use the "Previous versions of linux" which is running Kernel version 3.2.0-55. What can I do to update the grub menu so that Linux version with the 3.2.0-55 Kernel appears as the primary option? Do I need to get rid of/uninstall the newer kernel version? How can I do this without screwing up Linux entirely?

What if I just want a normal upgrade, not a New Install? • Updating a staging server (from a CI server) in a Vagrant box with Chef

  I'm using Vagrant + Chef (chef_client provisioner) to create & provision a staging environment for my server. And I have a Jenkins job set up that is run every time I push to my 'develop' branch. In the Jenkins job, I would like to update & rebuild the source code of the server in the staging box and restart it. I have already written the cookbooks that install the dependencies, configure the db etc. But I'm not sure how to run only the update & rebuild & restart stuff from the cookbooks. I understand I could always tear down the whole box and rebuild it, but provisioning the box is a lengthy process so I would like to do that as little as possible. I split my server cookbook into 3 recipes: dependencies, db_setup and server. What I want to run in the my Jenkins job is the "server" recipe only. But I dont' understand how can I do that... If I specify the run_list on my Chef server, then I lose the ability to provision the whole box from scratch. Basically, I would like to be able to tell Vagrant from the command line what recipes Chef should run. Is that possible somehow? Cheers!

  I've got my own nameserver ns3.epnddns.com and domain epnddns.com I wanted to try and update the records dynamiclly from home using nsupdate but when I run nsupdate -k Kwww.epnddns.com.+157+17183.key i get the following errors Kwww.epnddns.com.+157+17183.key:1: unknown option 'www.epnddns.com.' Kwww.epnddns.com.+157+17183.key:2: unexpected token near end of the file Kwww.epnddns.com.+157+17183.{private,key}: unexpected token Not sure why I get these errors, I'll post my complete setup. Generated keys on my home pc, using dnssec-keygen -a HMAC-MD5 -b 128 -n HOST www.epnddns.com. created /var/named/ and put the keys there and chmod them to 600. transfered the keys to my nameserver ns3.epnddns.com, created /var/named/ ,put the keys there and chmod them to 600 made dnskey.conf in /var/named and added key www.epnddns.com. { algorithm hmac-md5; secret "my secret from they keys=="; }; chmod to 600 then in /etc/bind/named.conf.local include "/var/named/dnskeys.conf"; zone "epnddns.com" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/epnddns.com.zone"; allow-transfer { myhomeip; }; //its my home ip so not in the same network allow-update { key www.epnddns.com.; }; }; I restarted bind without any error messages so it seems to be working on the nameserver at least. But on my homepc when i try and run the nsupdate i get those error messages. Thanks in advance for any help or insightful advice.

• Changed folder contents not updating in Finder (OS X 10.8)

  I've been having this problem for a number of days now. When I update the contents of a folder using terminal commands, by decompressing archives, or by using "Save As", the affected folder often fails to reflect these changes. Sometimes it takes quite a while for any files to be shown, even if the total size of the folder is fairly small (< 10 MB). I'm running an '09 MacBook Pro 13", so it isn't the newest system, but it certainly has enough oomph to display a list of files in a folder. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

• Windows crash report pop up 3 times when Windows XP starts after updating IE7 to IE8

  I just updated Internet Explorer 7 to IE 8. After the reboot, I have the Windows XP "send error report" dialog 3 times all with this info in it: AppName: update_kb24b8.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16981 ModName: urlmon.dll ModVer: 8.0.6001.18904 Offset: 0002df76 I uninstalled/updated all of my plugins and I still have this error 3 times each time I log in. Anyone know what is update_kb24b8.exe I didn't found a Microsoft KB with this number... BTW, after these 3 errors, everything s working well, including IE... Thanks!

  Hey guys, I'm new to serverfault so please excuse me if I sound a tad nub. I work in an environment that is kinda peace mealed together, and I honestly don't know how it works. I'm new to the IT field and am still in school. When I replace a PC I rename the old one to mo-o-pcname and give the new one the proper name of mo-pcname (mo is a location thing we use so it really doesn't apply to the problem.) The new PC will function on the network; it will have the ability to access network resources (printers, file shares, etc) and it will have the ability to get out to the internet. However I can no longer ping the machine. It would appear as if the DNS (A) record is not getting updated or something. Like I said I'm kinda new to the field and just trying to work through this problem. Thanks for your help.

  I have a strange issue, I have a DHCP and DNS server running in a non AD environment, on Windows 2003 server. I setup DHCP to update DNS A and PTR records even if the client doesnt request it, but I only see PTR records updated, the A records are not created at all. The domain is "local" forward zone is called "local" and in the option 15 set to "local" (actual name) the PTR records are created with the right name (example: win64_ent.local), What am I missing here ?

• Should EC2 server self register or have admin server

  I'm creating AWS servers using chef. I am also planning on enabling auto-scaling. While we have automatic monitoring setup already (server density or nagios etc), I was also going to setup the cloud watch alarm for the status check on the server. This led me down the path of trying to decide whether to install the ec2-command-line tools on the server itself (which then requires me to install java on the servers -- despite no other need for Java in our environment) or to possible have an "admin" box that will check periodically for servers and make sure they have their alarms set. I expect this paradigm to carry over to other things we want to configure (perhaps ensuring that termination protection is setup on production servers?). Any thoughts as to why to go one direction or another?

• Updating Dell PowerEdge firmware on Ubuntu?

  The company I work for recently got hands on a batch of second hand PowerEdge SC1425 machines. We'd like to put these to good use. Our operating system of choice is Ubuntu Server 10.04 64-bit, which installs just peachy on this type of machine. Now I'd like to install the firmware updates from Dell, which are apparently marked as recommended. This includes the updates for the BIOS, the BMC, and possibly some other hardware. I find it incredibly difficult to locate the files on the Dell website, and install any of them on an Ubuntu system: I downloaded the file OM_6.2.0_SUU_A01.iso. I believe I've read that the SUU DVD should be able to update any recent PowerEdge. Is this correct? Is this the latest version? Besides the version number, does A01 have any meaning? Is this image bootable? (At the moment, I just nosed around with a loop device mount.) Running /bin/bash ./suu from the DVD, I get: # /bin/bash ./suu ./suu: line 262: ./java/linux/i386/bin/java: No such file or directory The file exists and is executable, though. But I cannot execute it directly from the shell either.

• Adding nodes to MAAS server

  I was able to install MAAS server using ubuntu 12.04. Then boot up nodes from he PXE. Then installed maas-precise-x86-64-commissioning through pxe. Now the installation is done. but im unable to commission with the MAAS server. It does not show it as a node and neither im unable to add it manually and end up with following error. Also what is the default username password for maas-precise-x86-64-commissioning. Im unable to login. This error when adding node manually. • keyboard mappings are totally screwed after updating to kde4

  I recently upgraded from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4, and I have been having weird issues with my keyboard. In one of the virtual consoles e.g. when I press ctrl + alt 1 , I can type perfectly, but in KDE, several of the number keys don't work, the left and right arrows don't work either. I'm slowly beginning to wade through the mountains of documentation about the X keyboard model, but there has to be a better way. Does anyone no what it is? Edit: 1234567890 ! after deleting the entire .kde folder. but only until I change the Keyboard settings from the "system settings" applet, then its hosed full time. Regardless of what I set the settings too. (restore to default settings doesn't) 2nd Edit: I'm using Gentoo AMD64, I was upgrading from KDE 3.5 KDE 4.2. I think I had manual settings before, although I didn't change anything. I was originally running KDE without HAL until that stop working a year or so ago. After I uninstalled Visual Studio 2010 beta 2 and installed Visual Studio 2010 RC, executing IISRESET gives the following error message: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VCiisreset /stop Attempting stop... Stop attempt failed. The system cannot find the file specified. (2147942402, 80070002) Further information. Before bet2, the same computer also had beta1 installed. • Updating modules on VPS hosted under OpenVZ

So my question is, is it possible for me to update my modules on a VPS and if so how would I do this, or is this something I'll need to try get my host to do? Thanks in advance.
