  Completed CentOS 5.4 perfect install from howtoforge.com (ISPConfig 3). I have ISPConfig 3 deployed with a handful of sites. I installed xen: yum install xen kernel-xen i installed the recommended (linuxtopia.org) virtualization packages and started libvirtd yum install virt-manager libvirt libvirt-python libvirt-python python-virtinst i have damn small linux .iso in /root virt-install --name damnsmall --ram 16 --file=/var/lib/xen/images/damnsmall.img --file-size=1 --vnc --cdrom=/root/current.iso yields the error: ERROR Host does not support any virtualization options i have also tried this from GNOME (virt-manager) and i cant even add a connection. i read somewhere i need to reboot with the xen kernel--i dont think i want to do that--though, not really sure why. i need to keep ISPConfig untouched. Thanks in advance, and let me know if you need additional info

I'm a web designer & programmer, and the main features of the notebook should be: High battery life Small, 13.3" or 14" screen A fast processor and RAM that won't let me down while multi-tasking Anything other than these is secondary, I wouldn't like it to be very pricey though :) I'm now leaning towards Macbook Pro 13.3", 2.66 Ghz; it has 10 hours of battery life. However, I mostly develop on Windows, so I don't know how many hours of battery will I get if I run Windows 7 on Bootcamp. Your ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Ease of use (easy installation, low maintenance and good support) is priority number one, it supersedes price by a wide margin. The installation we had in mind would support up to ten workstations. • How do you recommend installing Linux on a computer that has no external drive or ability to boot fr

  I have an old Toshiba Portege 3505 "ultralight" laptop, meaning it doesn't have any kind of disk drive on it at all, that I'd like to completely reformat and install Linux on. However, it won't boot from any drive (and I don't have any on hand), so I'll have to install it from a USB drive (which I doubt it boots from either). (I'm not sure how to change the settings in my BIOS to get my computer to boot from a USB stick. Any ideas for this?) How do you recommend I do this? I want to note that I don't want to run Linux off a LiveUSB, I want to actually install it on the machine. I was thinking about Damn Small Linux, it's tiny and all I need. Any advice or suggestions for something else though? Finally, I'm a total newbie to this, I've never installed Linux on anything before so I might be a little slow on some stuff! Thanks!

  We need to build a new web server for our organization. We have around 100 hundred small traffic web sites, so our hardware requirements are not too tough. We run CentOS 6, Varnish+Apache, PHP, MySQL, Typo3 CMS for most of websites. Here's a hardware we want to buy: SuperMicro X9SCA-F-O (we need to have a remote management capability) (or better X9SCM-F?) Intel Xeon E3-1220 v2 2*4Gb DDR-III 1600MHz Kingston ECC (KVR16E11/4) (currently we have 4gb, and it feels like enough, so no reason for 16gb yet). Procase EB140-B-0 (1 unit) PSU 350W Procase MG1350, Active PFC We already have: Intel 335 120GB SSD (for OS, databases and important websites). 2*2tb WD Green RAID1 (for other data and backups). Does it look like a reasonable choice for our needs? Any issues with hardware compatibility? Any other notes?

• MS Word - Keeps requesting user to save Normal template

  We have Small Business Server 2008 setup on a couple of our clients networks and we have the following issue. Whenever they logon, Microsoft word automatically opens and requests them to save their changes to the template 'Normal'. It constantly happens, we have a mixture of Win 2000 and XP machines and it seems to happen more often on XP than 2000. Any idea why this might be happening and how we can resolve it, it's just frustrating for the end users. PS: This is happening on Office 2000 and Office 2003.

• git/gitolite: big git repo with several mini projects

  I'm pretty new to the whole version control thing, and even more so with git. I recently installed git on my computer(s) and set it up on a NAS server. However, I have several client folders with several project folders per client folder. Each one of these client folders is a giant repo, encompassing every project inside it. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to break this apart? So, for instance: The NAS is my 'origin', and has gitolite installed On computer1 I have every project folder in a client folder ever created (clean branch), In computer2 I do not a new checkout of the client branch (because all the projects in that branch are all completed and I don't need a working copy of it), but I do have a brand new project folder for that client "newproject". Is there a way to commit and push to the NAS repo from computer2? Or perhaps is there a better way of organizing all this?

  Hello, I'm trying to get 2 separate django projects running on the same apache server with mod_wsgi that are also under the same domain but different urls. Like www.example.com/site1/ and www.example.com/site2 What I'm trying to do is something like... <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.example.com <location "/site1/"> DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/site1" WSGIScriptAlias / /var/www/html/site1/django.wsgi </location> <location "/site2/"> DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/site2" WSGIScriptAlias / /var/www/html/site2/django.wsgi </location> </VirtualHost> The closes thing I've seen is this http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/howto/deployment/modpython/ but "mysite" is different for both of these cases and they're using mod_python instead of mod_wsgi. Any help with this would be great thanks!

• Splitting Ethernet cable

  I am looking for the best way to network my small business. I have an office where my router/modem are located, and then 2 more computers in another room. I can route Ethernet to this room with about 75 ft of cabling, and I would like to do this because my computers on Ethernet are getting 3x the speed as computers on wireless. Is there any way I can use just one Ethernet cable to span the 75 feet, and then maybe 2 smaller ones to go to the two computers from there? If there's a simple way to do this, maybe with a connector that would be ideal, as opposed to buying over 150 ft of cabling. Thanks!

• Server 2003 - Default installation of SharePoint throws javascript error 'undefined' is null or not an object

  I have been handed a server that has a fresh installation of small business server 2003. SharePoint has been installed, and it is a completely fresh copy (no changes made) I know for a fact that everything was paid for so this isn't some dodgy copy. When I try to click any option in any of the floating menu's in IE 8, the browser asks me if I want to debug .. Error: 'undefined' is null or not an object for example, I got to Projects - and click on the sample project, then click delete on the floating menu that pops up and the error appears. This is brand new, I cannot believe I am having this problem! Has anyone come across this, is it an old problem with easy fix? All windows updates installed - see no updates for sharepoint? • Beginners advice on Small business network disk(s)

  We are having 10 PCs used by various user and presently use one network disk (a LaCie NAS) for all our data. Everything is Windows Vista and our collective IT hardware knowledge is minimal. This worked well generally. However, recently the disk freqently loses connection from the network (2-3 times per week) and the only way back seems to be the "turn it off and back on" trick. This obviously cant be any good for the disk. I understand that there are various more sophisticated ways of storing data and was wondering what people would recommend. One of the worries is obviously disk failure (either in part or as a whole) and the lack of continued availability due to network issues. I would guess that a disk which replicates data wouldnt work as a sole solution due to the network connection, but dont know what hardware (and/or software) would/could work in our case. In terms of size, we are looking at very small amounts, ie. less than 500 GB in total.

  I need some advice about encrypt all traffic on a small private network running wi-fi and LAN traffic on 192.168.0.x network. The network would comprise of client laptops connecting to the wi-fi router (192.168.0.254) via ethernet connection or wireless. The main purpose of the server is for the client laptops to talk to two servers on different IP's (192.168.0.200 and 192.168.0.201) on ports 80 and 433. My main concern is having packet sniffers and what not getting access to the data. The only ways I see at the moment is to have VPN running on the network or use IPSec policy's to do this. Any other ways guys?

  Hi everyone, I am looking for a new laptop/netbook and I have two simple requirements: must be small (10-12in screen) and light (<=3-3.5pounds); must work with a dock into which I can put a PCI or PCI Express card. Basically, I have no performance requirements. Discontinued or low-end are fine. All I want is something easy to carry that when at work I can use a PCI/PCI Express card with to do multi-head. Eg, if an Acer Aspire 1410 fitted the second requirement I would by one in a blink. The only solution with which I am acquainted are Thinkpads that can go into the Thinkpad Advanced Dock. • FTP transfer timeouts while uploading small files

  I have this problem that when I need to transfer some files (mostly small files < 100KB) the connections time out. Well actually it uploads one file and it fails on the next until my client reconnects to the server and the same thing happens over and over again. I googled the problem and some said that switching from passive mode to active mode could solve the it but it didn't work for me. Even continuously pinging the server to keep the connection alive was to no avail. P.S. I have root access to the server. Update: I'm running ProFTPD on a CentOS vps. I tried a few clients (FireFTP, FileZilla) all having the same problem.

  Hi, I have a Microsoft Small Business Server. I have pointed an external domain name to the external fixed IP address for the server. In routing and remote access I have defined a service for our subversion server as follows: Incoming port: 8443 Private address: 192.168.10.5 Outgoing port: 8443 192.168.10.5 is our development server, not the SBS (which is at 192.168.10.1) This rule works correctly if I am not on our internal network. However if I am on the internal network this rule does not get applied. What can I do/set so this rule is applied both internally and externally (so users with laptops et, don't keep having to change the URL by which they access the subversion server) Not sure what other info you may need, so please let me know if more details are required. • Okular (on Ubuntu 9.10) prints multiple pages per sheet (n-up) very small

  I'm trying to print a set of beamer slides with multiple slides per page (4-up or 6-up). When I select 4 pages or 6 pages per sheet in the Okular print dialog, the pages print quite small (perhaps even tiny -- about 1.75" by 1.25") and leave significant white-space on the page. I can get around this behavior by using the pdfnup utility (in the pdfjam package); which will correctly generate a 4- or 6-up pdf file but it's annoying to generate a second pdf file when I should be able to accomplish this task from the print dialog. Details: Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), 64-bit, Color Postscript printer.

• Cheap, light, small Skype laptop?

  My wife and son are heading out while I stay home to babysit some contractors. We discussed getting her a small, cheap laptop that would primarily be used for Skype. Good quality integrated video & mike are prerequisites, as is Windows (though I'd entertain OSX). Doesn't need to be large, a 12" screen is probably fine. If I went new, where should I look? And if I were going to test the used/craigslist waters, what specs are we talking about?
