  • Best method of achieving bi-directional communication between Apple iPad "clients" and a Windows Ser

    We are currently starting to build a client-server system which will see 10 or more Apple iPad client devices communicating to a central Windows server over a wireless LAN. We wanted to some existing plumbing (.NET remoting/WCF/web services/etc) that would allow us to implement a reliable, secure solution without having to start at a low level (e.g. sockets) and recreate the wheel. One of the major requirements that complicates this scenario is that unlike a traditional web service, the windows server needs to be able to arbitrarily notify the clients whenever certain events occur -- so it is not a simple request/response scenario like the web. Initially, we were going to use Windows clients, so our plan was to use the full-duplex mode of .NET WCF over HTTP|TCP. But now using the iPad, we don't have any of the WCF infrastructure. So my question is: what is the best way to allow an iPad and a Windows server to (securely) communicate over a LAN, with each device able to initiate communication to the other? Am I stuck writing low-level socket code? Thanks!

  • Returned JSON from Twitter and displaying tweets using FlexSlider

    After sending a request to the Twitter API using geocode, I'm getting back a json response with a list of tweets. I then that into a php array using json_decode() and use a foreach loop to output what I need. I'm using flex slider to show the tweets in a vertical fashion after wrapping them in a list. So what I want is for it to only show 10 tweets at a time and scroll through them infinitely like an escalator.     Hello there, So I've managed to get the feed from twitter and am attempting to parse it... I only require the following fields from the feed: name, description, time_zone and created_at I am successfully pulling out name and description.. however time_zone and created_at always are nil... The following is the code...     I'm writing a test app using the twitter gem and I'd like to write an integration test but I can't figure out how to mock the objects in the Twitter namespace.   • Mysql - wondering about scaling a twitter-like application ?

    Hi, I'm developing an app that is vaguely similar to twitter, in that it allows users to follow one another. I wanted to do this using google app engine, for its scalability promises, but it's proving kind of difficult to get running for a few different reasons. I'd basically like to have a _users table, and a _followers table. Users go into the users table, follower relationships go into _followers. The problem is that each row in the users table will probably have like 100 corresponding records in the _followers table as users start following one another. So the number of rows is going to explode quickly. Using app engine, the volume [shouldn't] be a problem. If I go with mysql, and I do actually start to get some traction, how do I scale this up? Am I going to just end up moving to a distributed database in the end anyway? Should I fight it out with google app engine? I read that Twitter was using mysql, and they've run into this problem, and are now switching to cassandra. Thanks

Is there any way to authenticate the user before calling the API or use the default proxy settings? P.S Internally the API is using HttpWebRequest.

    I am creating a twitter plugin for wordpress and I was told that when using oauth you can't really make the plugin act natively because each time the user installs the plugin they have to add their own twitter api credentials because of the callback url.   • How can I diagnose/debug "maximum number of clients reached" X errors?

    Hi, I'm hitting a problem whereby X prevents processes from creating windows, uttering something like the following into ~/.xsession-errors: cannot open display: :0.0 Maximum number of clients reached Searching around there are lots of examples of people facing this problem, and sometimes people identify which program they are running is using up all the client slots. See e.g. LP 70872 (Firefox), LP 263211 (gnome-screensaver). For what it's worth, I run gnome-terminal, thunderbird, chromium-browser, empathy, tomboy and virtualbox nearly all the time, on top of the normal stuff you get with the GNOME desktop, and occasionally some other bits and pieces. However my question is not "which of my programs is causing this problem" but rather, how can one go about diagnosing this problem? In the above (and other) bugs, forum reports, etc., a number of tools are suggested: xlsclients - lists the client applications for the given display, but I don't think that corresponds to 'X clients' xrestop - a top-style X resources tool, one row per X client. Lots of '' clients, not shown in xlsclients output xwininfo -root -children lists X window objects From what I can gather, the problem might not be too many clients at all, but rather resources kept around in the X server for clients who have long-since detached. But it would also appear that you cannot (easily?) relate X resources back to their client. Can one effectively diagnose this issue once it has started to occur, or is a tedious divide-and-conquer approach for the apps I run the only approach open to me? Update Jan 2011: I think I have resolved this issue. For the benefit of anyone stumbling across this, nautilus and/or compiz or something in that chain of software was segfaulting due to a wallpaper I had. I had chosen an XML file as my wallpaper, which defined a rotating gallery of images. It was hand-made, but based on /usr/share/backgrounds/contest/background-1.xml or similar. Disabling the wallpaper and I have not had a crash since. I'm not marking this as answered yet, since the actual specific problem was not my question, but how to diagnose it was. Unfortunately this was mostly trial-and-error which sucks.

  • Having trouble with some media while using Firefox in Ubuntu.

    I just started using Firefox in Ubuntu today. While on Twitter, I noticed some avatars not showing up, but just their description as seen in the screen shot below. Any idea what could cause this? Also, I need to d/l Adobe Flash so I can get other media to work online. It gives me the option to d/l it but then takes me to the Flash file with no option to install. Any ideas with this as well?     hi, im trying to replace our current journal (excel sheet) with a web portal based journal. something kind of like twitter, but with more options. also needs to have a login so we can track the people entering. it can also be some sort of tool but i cant find anything that meets our demands... i could use a ITIL ticket service but that has way to much functionalities for our use. im basicly looking for a webportal with a shared blog, where users can login and creat new entries with: a topic name a automated follow-up ID number a field where they can enter specific info a reply field and a status field with pre defined statuses can anyone help me with this? thanks in advance.     Does anyone know of a way to interface with a Social Media Aggregator using Powershell. For Instance, I would like to update my global status on digsby using Powershell. Digsby would then fan the message out to Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Etc.. I am open to using any Social Media Aggregator that can do this.. Digsby, Seesmic, Ping.fm TweetDeek, etc.. If any of these programs have a com interface or something like it I'm sure who ever implements this first will have a large gain in users.

Seems like each on has its own plugin and demands and mixing them is going to be a mess. This is for logging in users like how Stackoverflow gets things done not for using the robust features of the APIs. What I want to do is do what stackoverflow did for login but in rails.

    I'd like to build an app with a tabbar in the style of Tweetie 2/Twitter for iPhone (that is, images with no labels). I can't see a way to do it with normal UITabBarController/UITabBar, and my current thinking is that it's actually a UIToolbar with a custom view controller that is pushing and popping views from an array to simulate the UITabBarController's default behavior. Is this the approach that you all would recommend, or is there something more elegant that I'm overlooking?
