  • Whats the difference between running a shell script as ./script.sh and sh script.sh

    I have a script that looks like this #!/bin/bash function something() { echo "hello world!!" } something | tee logfile I have set the execute permission on this file and when I try running the file like this $./script.sh it runs perfectly fine, but when I run it on the command line like this $sh script.sh It throws up an error. Why does this happen and what are the ways in which I can fix this.

    I can see that parameters can be defined for Commands defined using the Commands extension point. I can not define a value for these command parameters. I can also define parameters under the Command element in the menus extension point when defining menu contributions. I can define a value for the parameter here. Are the command parameters in Command different from parameters in menu contributions? If they are different how are they different?

  • What's the best way to explain parsing to a new programmer?

    I am a college student getting my Computer Science degree. A lot of my fellow students really haven't done a lot of programming. They've done their class assignments, but let's be honest here those questions don't really teach you how to program. I have had several other students ask me questions about how to parse things, and I'm never quite sure how to explain it to them. Is it best to start just going line by line looking for substrings, or just give them the more complicated lecture about using proper lexical analysis, etc. to create tokens, use BNF, and all of that other stuff? They never quite understand it when I try to explain it. What's the best approach to explain this without confusing them or discouraging them from actually trying.

  • what's the correct way to release a new website?

    so i've been working on a website on and off for about a year now, and i'm finally at a point where it's functional enough to test out in a sort of private beta (not ready for live release). but i never thought about the correct process for doing this and what things i need to take care of. i've never released a public website before. some of the questions/concerns i have in mind: 1) is it against my MSDN license agreement to release a website using the software? 2) how do i protect my "idea"? is it a bad idea to find random people you don't know to test out your site? can you make them digitally sign some sort of NDA? 3) i'm using some open source code - any proper way to release open source code to live production? 4) how much traffic can a place like discountasp.net handle anyway? can hosting sites generally handle large volume of traffic? any comments/suggestions regarding the proper/safe way to release a public website would be appreciated. i've been working on this for a while and never actually sat down to think about the right way to move from a personal side project to a live production website.

  • Whats up with cross site Scripting (getJSON) and flickr example

    In past i had read the documentation about getJSON and there is an example with a flickr photo api. (the example with the [pussy]cats :-)). No I ask myself why is it possible, to access flickr directly with this example. Ive tried this by store this code on my local machine - it works but if I use a local copy of jquery i just get an error in firebug like this $ is not defined myurl/test.html Line 11 Does anybody of you have a solution for this paradox thing? This is the documentation url HTTP:api.jquery.com/jQuery.getJSON/ The example isn´t also not working if I store the HTTP:code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js in my local jquery file.   • Whats happening to my HTML?

    I am making changes to my website, and I just noticed that things look different. In IE, the content doesnt center, theres a margin on my content, and the font looks bigger in chrome.. I ran it through Yahoo's HTML validator and the error I get is line 1 - Error: character "" not allowed in prolog. I believe that there may be some sort of whitespace being sent before the DOC TYPE, but I cant seem to fix it. The HTML looks fine in my text editor (Notepad++) so I dont know what the problem is. Im using a strict DOC Type. Everything was fine before I made any changes, but I cant pinpoint what caused the change. If it helps, I'm using a Framework (Kohana). My initial thought was that something was being sent to the browser by an echo or something, but I couldnt find any echo statements. I dont know what could be causing this... If you want to see any code or HTML just ask. Thanks.     1) I'm planning to create a new vCenter server which database point to the same db as current vCenter (the one LM pointing to atm), Then I'm planning to repoint the LM to a new vCenter, ( the new one will see the same esx host, datastore, etc) Is LM will be okay if I do this? 2) The currect VC is a dediated server and a new vCenter will be VM, the current vCenter has database installed on local machine (inc update manager as well) I'm planning to move the local db to cluster db then point the current vCenter to this new cluster and make sure everything is working before promote a new one. Update manager will also has it own VM and point to a new db cluster. Is anythingelse I miss out or need to pay more attention on? thanks
