  • Answers to Your Common Oracle Database Lifecycle Management Questions

    We recently ran a live webcast on Strategies for Managing Oracle Database's Lifecycle. There were tons of questions from our audience that we simply could not get to during the hour long presentation. Below are some of those questions along with their answers. Enjoy! Question: In the webcast the presenter talked about “gold” configuration standards, for those who want to use this technique, could you recommend a best practice to consider or follow? How do I get started? Answer:Gold configuration standardization is a quick and easy way to improve availability through consistency. Start by choosing a reference database and saving the configuration to the Oracle Enterprise Manager repository using the Save Configuration feature. Next create a comparison template using the Oracle provided template as a starting point and modify the ignored properties to eliminate expected differences in your environment. Finally create a comparison specification using the comparison template you created plus your saved gold configuration and schedule it to run on a regular basis. Don’t forget to fill in the email addresses of those you want to notify upon drift detection. Watch the database configuration management demo to learn more. Question: Can Oracle Lifecycle Management Pack for Database help with patching an Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) environment? Answer: Yes, Oracle Enterprise Manager supports both parallel and rolling patch application of Oracle Real Application Clusters. The use of rolling patching is recommended as there is no downtime involved. For more details watch this demo. Question: What are some of the things administrators can do to control configuration drift? Why is it important? Answer:Configuration drift is one of the main causes of instability and downtime of applications. Oracle Enterprise Manager makes it easy to manage and control drift using scheduled configuration comparisons combined with comparison templates. Question: Does Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2 offer an incremental update feature for "gold" images? For instance, if the source binary has a higher PSU level, what is the best approach to update the existing "gold" image in the software library? Do you have to create a new image or can you just update the original one? Answer:Provisioning Profiles (Gold images) can contain the installation files and database configuration templates. Although it is possible to make some changes to the profile after creation (mainly to configuration), it is normally recommended to simply create a new profile after applying a patch to your reference database. Question: The webcast talked about enforcing in-house standards, does Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c offer verification of your databases and systems to those standards? For example, the initial "gold" image has been massively deployed over time, and there may be some changes to it. How can you do regular checks from Enterprise Manager to ensure the in-house standards are being enforced? Answer:There are really two methods to validate conformity to standards. The first method is to use gold standards which you compare other databases to report unwanted differences. This method uses a new comparison template technology which allows users to ignore known differences (i.e. SID, Start time, etc) which results in a report only showing important or non-conformant differences. This method is quick to setup and configure and recommended for those who want to get started validating compliance quickly. The second method leverages the new compliance framework which allows the creation of specific and robust validations. These compliance rules are grouped into standards which can be assigned to databases quickly and easily. Compliance rules allow for targeted and more sophisticated validation beyond the basic equals operation available in the comparison method. The compliance framework can be used to implement just about any internal or industry standard. The compliance results will track current and historic compliance scores at the overall and individual database targets. When the issue is resolved, the score is automatically affected. Compliance framework is the recommended long term solution for validating compliance using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. Check out this demo on database compliance to learn more. Question: If you are using the integration between Oracle Enterprise Manager and My Oracle Support in an "offline" mode, how do you know if you have the latest My Oracle Support metadata? Answer:In Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2, you now only need to download one zip file containing all of the metadata xmls files. There is no indication that the metadata has changed but you could run a checksum on the file and compare it to the previously downloaded version to see if it has changed. Question: What happens if a patch fails while administrators are applying it to a database or system? Answer:A large portion of Oracle Enterprise Manager's patch automation is the pre-requisite checks that happen to ensure the highest level of confidence the patch will successfully apply. It is recommended you test the patch in a non-production environment and save the patch plan as a template once successful so you can create new plans using the saved template. If you are using the recommended ‘out of place’ patching methodology, there is no urgency because the database is still running as the cloned Oracle home is being patched. Users can address the issue and restart the patch procedure at the point it left off. If you are using 'in place' method, you can address the issue and continue where the procedure left off. Question: Can Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c R2 compare configurations between more than one target at the same time? Answer:Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c can compare any number of target configurations at one time. This is the basis of many important use cases including Configuration Drift Management. These comparisons can also be scheduled on a regular basis and emails notification sent should any differences appear. To learn more about configuration search and compare watch this demo. Question: How is data comparison done since changes are taking place in a live production system? Answer:There are many things to keep in mind when using the data comparison feature (as part of the Change Management ability to compare table data). It was primarily intended to be used for maintaining consistency of important but relatively static data. For example, application seed data and application setup configuration. This data does not change often but is critical when testing an application to ensure results are consistent with production. It is not recommended to use data comparison on highly dynamic data like transactional tables or very large tables. Question: Which versions of Oracle Database can be monitored through Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c? Answer:Oracle Database versions: 9.2.0.8, 10.1.0.5, 10.2.0.4, 10.2.0.5, 11.1.0.7, 11.2.0.1, 11.2.0.2, 11.2.0.3.   • Hide annoying VMware hint "To release input, press Ctrl+Alt"

    I'm running VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 7 x64. In the guest OS (also Windows 7 x64) I have VMWare Tools installed, but the VMWare Tools service is disabled. I run the VM in full screen mode and the VMWare toolbar at the top often displays this tooltip: To release input, press Ctrl+Alt This tooltip obscures a part of the VM (often the menu of a program I'm using) and it's annoying as hell. Going out of full screen mode and into it again gets rid of it, but only until I mouse over that toolbar and then it reappears! How do I get rid of it, once and for all? I tried adding hints.hideAll = "TRUE" to the .vmx file for the VM and to preferences.ini and neither of those helped.

  • "Host usb device connections disabled" in VMware???

    I installed Linux, Windows XP and Chrome OS in VMware Workstation 7 and in every OS the USB host doesn't work. When I start some of the Operative Systems this message shows up: "host usb device connections disabled" and under that : "The connection to the VMware USB Arbitration Service was unsuccessful. Please check the status of this service in the Microsoft Management Console." So what to do? What do I need to install to make the usb host work? BTW I use Windows 7 as a host OS. Thanks

  • Isolating VMware virtual machines from the network

    I have: VMware Workstation 7 running on a Windows 7 box (with a single NIC), with multiple virtual machines running a range of OSs. The host box is connected to a WRT54G router running Tomato firmware. The router is acting as a wireless bridge to another WRT54G that's wired to my broadband modem. I can access the VMs externally via VNC using VMware's Remote Display. Over time I've had these running: a. Using NAT networking (single IP) with port forwarding on the router and a custom port in VMware for each VM. b. Using bridged networking with static IPs assigned to each VM via MAC address, and port forwarding on the router to each IP running with standard ports. Either way, the host box, and other physical machines on the network are accessible from the VMs. Is there a way to isolate the VMs from the rest of the network, but still maintain internet access and remote VNC to the VMs?

  • Growing the size of a VM's disk in VMware

    I have a VM that I originally gave 10 GB to (using VMware workstation, and Ubuntu 11.10 is the guest OS). I now wish to add to that. I have seen the option to expand the disk size, but all that does is create a new "partition" that Ubuntu can see. Is there a way to expand the size of the primary partition that the guest OS is using? NOTE: I have seen something regarding doing this for a regular Ubunbu OS that requires a boot disk. Is there a way that I can apply that to this VM case? Using Windows 7 64-bit as the host OS EDIT: To be clear, I am trying to resize the boot partition. Edit 2: GParted's resize option is greyed out.

    Hi Guys, I am not able to ping any machine(not even the host) from Guest VM in bridged mode. But I got an IP which is on the same subnet as host. I can ping my guest VM from the host and can use ssh to connect to the guest. I am using Vmware workstation 6.5. Guest VM is a centos VM and host is windows xp. Every thing works fine in NAT mode. Any clues as to what could be happening. I tried disabling all the firewalls I have. My virtual network editor shows that my ethernet adapter(the one my host uses) is used for bridging. It is connected. I don't understand how I can get an IP address from DHCP server. I can't ping any of the DNS servers in generated /etc/resolv.conf which are the same as that of my host

    I have virtualized laptops before, when someone gets a new one and doesn't want to quite let go of their old laptop for fear of losing something. This was using VMWare Workstation 7.X. In 8.0 when I go to "Convert a Physical Machine to a Virtual Machine", it asks for an IP address and doesn't give the option to virtualize the machine it's running on. How to I get VMWare to virtualize it's current system? I tried typing in Localhost, and 127.0.0.1 but that didn't do it.

  • Internet connection sharing: Ubuntu 9.10 Server on Windows 7 and VMWare

    I'm trying to get Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) working between my Windows 7 RTM host and a Ubuntu 9.10 Server running on VMWare Workstation 6.5, but I have not been able to get it right. Here's what I have done: Configured VMWare to use Host Only networking (I tried NAT as well). Enabled ICS on my host's network connection, allowing VMnet1. After enabling it, Windows informed me that its VMnet1 IP has changed to 192.168.137.1. So in VMWare's Virtual Network Editor I configured VMnet1: Subnet 192.168.137.0 Mask 255.255.255.0 I did the same for DHCP. For NAT i set 192.168.137.1 as Gateway. I cannot ping any sites or get access through apt-get/aptitude install/update, although domains do get resolved to IPs. I have also tried using a static IP in Ubuntu. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my external IP is locked to my host's MAC address.

    I am running VMWare Workstation Version 7 on a Windows 7 partition on a Macbook Pro. I have built a virtual XP machine within vmware to run some old music programs. The sound from my virtual machines comes out of my macbook speakers but the volume is not controllable using my macbook volume controls, only by using the volume control on the XP machine. My problem is that i need to use headphones, and when i plug a headphone jack into my macbook, the sound from my vmware virtual machines still comes out of the macbook speakers. I am baffled.     I am using vmware workstation 7. Guest is Windows XP. The host OS is Windows 7. When I queue the printer with multiple documents, the printer doesn't print in order. It seems to print the smaller size in data of documents first. The printer is an HP printer. This is what I have tried so far: I have tested this on the host machine, and it works fine. I have tested this on other host machines(XP Windows7), and it works fine. I have tested other HP printers I have tested it another another guest OS Windows 7 I have tested different drivers Thanks in advance for any help on this one!

  • VMware virtual network adapters and Windows Firewall

    I am running VMware Workstation 7.1.4 on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1-U (x64). Aside from the physical network adapter, I have created a single virtual network adapter (VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1) which is connected to (can be seen by) the host and the guests. My problem is, even after applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak to the virtual adapter, making it disappear from the Network and Sharing Center, I still can't connect to programs running in the host from the guests, unless I specifically "allowed the program to communicate with the public network" using the Windows Firewall (which I don't want to do). This happens to all the programs and services running in the host (File and Printer Sharing, Database server, HTTP proxy, etc.) I am getting the impression that applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak only hides a network from the Network and Sharing Center but not actually making it private. Any hints and suggestions?

  • Getting VPN to work from Virtual PC

    Setup: Host is running Windows7. Virtual PC is a Windows Server 2008 running under VMWare workstation 6.5. From the Host I have a VPN to e.g. TFS and other resources. From the VPC I need to connect to e.g. a SQL server via the VPN. My problem is, that I cannot get a connection from the VPC. If I'm sitting on the corporate network, all is working fine (but then I don't have the VPN). From home - where the VPN is required - it does not work. I have two network adapters defined/configued. One as BRIDGED and one as Host Only. IF I change the one being BRIDTED to NATS I have no connectivity at all from the VPC. I have no problems connecting from my host to the VPC. Thanks.

    I have a set of machines as follows My home laptop running Win7 Ultimate with internet connection. A vmware workstation vm running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition server in my laptop w/o internet connectivity Some of my peers' machines connected to internet I want to create a VPN with these machines, provided the VM will not have any direct internet connection and my peers should able to connect to the SVN server application running on this Win2003 server VM. Can anybody please suggest me how to setup this network, what software I need to install in both physical machine and vm, what kind of network connectivity should be there between vmware guest and host machine? EDIT: I deliberately don't want to connect the VM with internet. The host will work more of a gateway of the VPN connection for the VM.

  • cannot using internet in VMWare

    I am using VMware Workstation version 7 on Ubuntu 10.10. I installed Windows XP service pack 3 for guest os. Within VMWare, I am using bridge connection that I assigned static IP address to be able to ping host IP address but I cannot ping default router gateway. I also tried to command "/etc/init.d/vmware start" on terminal. All tasks are able to start successfully except "VM communication interface socket family" I am not sure that how to setup network for my VMWare by using wireless. Thanks in advance.

  • Host PC can't see file-system on local VMWare VM

    I am running VMWare Workatation 8.0 on a Windows7 host, hosting a Windows7 VM. It's working fine except that the host cannot see the files on the VM when it's running. The VM is running locally on the host, not on the network. I found a page saying I simply need to share the folders on either side and the other can see them, but this isn't working. VMWare Workstation has a handy tool to share folders from the host drive to the VM, but I need the opposite - I have software installed on the host (for licensing reasons) which I need to use to work on files within the VM.

  • SBS 2008 - Blank desktop while installing

    I'm trying to install SBS 2008 Standard Ed on a VMware Workstation 8. The installation runs fine up until some point where the desktop becomes completely blank. The server is still running and responds to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and CTRL+ESC, but there are no icons and no explorer-bar. I have tried to install it twice now and each time it comes to a halt at the same spot. Starting Taskmanager and launching explorer.exe only brings up the filemanager. Anyone have a clue to what it could be?
