• Will JVisualVM degrade application performance?

  I have doubts in JVisual VM profiler tool related to performance. I have requirement to implement a JVM Monitoring tool for my enterpise java application. I have gone through some profiling tools in market but all them are having some kind of agent file which we need include in server startup. I have a fear that these client agent will degrade my application performance will more. So I have decided to JVisual VM because this profiler tool comes with JDK itself but before implementing JVisualVM, does anybody faces any issues with JVisualVM profiler tool? As well as, is this safe if I implement in application?

• Trash Destination Adapter

  The Trash Destination and this article came from early experiences of using SSIS and community feedback at the time. When developing a package it is very useful to have a destination adapter that does nothing but consume rows with no setup requirement. You often want run a package part way through development, or just add a path so you can set a Data Viewer. There are stock tasks that can be used, but with the Trash Destination all columns are treated as selected automatically (usage type of read-only), so the pipeline knows they are required. It is also obvious that this is for development or diagnostic purposes, and is clearly not a part of the functional design of the package. It is also ideal for just playing around and exploring concepts in SSIS, and is often used in conjunction with the Data Generator Source. Using these two components it is easy to setup a test of an expression in the Derived Column Transformation for example. The Data Generator Source provides some dummy data, and the Trash Destination allows you to anchor the output path and set a Data Viewer to examine the results. It can also be used when performance tuning packages. It is a consistent and known quantity that has no external influences, so it is ideal as a destination when breaking the data flow into sections to isolate a bottleneck. The adapter is really simple to use and requires no setup. Simply drop it onto the pipeline designer and use it to terminate your data flow path. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. Finally, for 2005/2008, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Trash Destination transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations. Downloads The Trash Destination is available for SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 (includes R2) and SQL Server 2012. Please choose the version to match your SQL Server version, or you can install multiple versions and use them side by side if you have more than one version of SQL Server installed. If you an error when you try and use the component along the lines of The component could not be added to the Data Flow task. Please verify that this component is properly installed.  ... The data flow object "Konesans ..." is not installed correctly on this computer, this usually indicates that the internal cache of SSIS components needs to be updated. This is held by the SSIS service, so you need restart the the SQL Server Integration Services service. You can do this from the Services applet in Control Panel or Administrative Tools in Windows. You can also restart the computer if you prefer. You may also need to restart any current instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. The full error message is shown below for reference: TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio ------------------------------ The component could not be added to the Data Flow task. This is not necessary for SQL Server 2012 as the new SSIS toolbox automatically detects components. If you are still having issues then contact us, but please provide as much detail as possible about error, as well as which version of the the task you are using and details of the SSIS tools installed.

  Assume an interface containing these methods : Car find(long id); List<Car> find(String model); Is it better to rename them like this? Car findById(long id); List findByModel(String model); Indeed, any developer who use this API won't need to look at the interface for knowing possible arguments of initial find() methods. So my question is more general : What is the benefit of using overloaded methods in code since it reduce readability?

• python, cluster computing, design help [closed]

  I would like to create my own parallel computing server. Can you please point me to some resources I can use to help me develop my server. Sorry, like I said I need help getting started. Yes, I am limited to python, I cannot use C. I am using a bunch of workstations and I want to use all the cpus in those machines. So what I am looking for is blog posts, books, articles that can help me develop my own client/server tools to send code from the client to the servers and spawn python processes based on the number of cpus. I know how to do the subprocessing/multiprocessing part of the program, I do not know how to create the server that will take the client's requests. I also need to figure out what is the best way to handle sending file data, like netcdf files or other spatial data. Any suggestions very welcome.

The solution to a system with different interfaces(or clients i should say) is to go with developing a Web service and have other systems interact with it. I never had the requirement for developing a Web service so i am bit short on it. All i understand is that A web service is a system or application that performs some operations which may include modifying, sending or receiving data over a network using HTTP protocol. • Repeat row headers after Page Break

  The lead developer of the FO engine send me by chance an email about a REALLY nice feature I did not know about. Did you ever encounter a long table with merged cells, where the merged cell went on to the next page? While column headers are by default repeated on the next page, row headers are not. Tables with group-left column and pivot tables are prime examples where this problem occurs. I have seen reports where merged cells could go over multiple pages and you would need to back to find the row header on previous pages. The BI Publisher RTF templates have a special tag you can added to a merged cell to repeat the contents after each page break. You just need to add the following (wordy) tag to the next merged table cell: true Example: 2nd page of report before adding the tag 2nd page of report after adding the tag. • Detecting 404 errors after a new site design

  We recently re-designed Developer Fusion and as part of that we needed to ensure that any external links were not broken in the process. In order to monitor this, we used the awesome LogParser tool. All you need to do is open up a command prompt, navigate to the directory with your web site's log files in, and run a query like this: "c:\program files (x86)\log parser 2.2\logparser" "SELECT top 500 cs-uri-stem,count(*) FROM u_ex*.log WHERE sc-status=404 GROUP BY cs-uri-stem order by count(*) desc" -rtp:-1 topMissingUrls.txt And you've got a text file with the top 500 requested URLs that are returning 404. Simple!

• Advices and strategies for browser compatibility on web applications into a corporate environment

  With the new CSS 3 and HTML 5 tecnology, the web applications gained a lot of new tools for a better UI(user interface) interaction, beautifull templates and even responsive layout to fit into tablets and smartphones. Within a corporate environment, those new tecnologies are required so the company can "follow" the IT evolution and their concurrent, but they also want that those new web applications supports old browsers. How to deal with this situation? By one side we are asked to follow the news and IT evolutions, create responsive layouts and use a lot of cool jQuery's plugins. And by the other side, we are asked to support old browsers that doesn't support those new responsive features, plugins or components. I would like advices and strategies to create "modern" web applications that are also supported on old browsers. How does your company deal with this situation? Is it possible to have the same web application running good and beauty on old browsers, and responsive, interactive on actual browsers?

• End user query syntax?

  I'm making a command line tool that allows end users to query a statically-schemed database; however, I want users to be able to specify boolean matchers in their query (effectively things like "get rows where (field1=abcd && field2=efgh) || field3=1234"). I did Googling a solution, but I couldn't find anything suitable for end users--still, this seems like it would be a very common problem so I suspect there is a standard solution. So: What (if any) standard query "languages" are there that might be appropriate for end users? What (if any) de facto standards are there (for example, Unix tools that solve similar problems). Failing the previous two options, can you suggest a syntax that would be simple, concise, and easy to validate?

  I'm a Java developer in charge of making a product which allows clients to "build their own site". I've spent a lot of time looking into Liferay, as I don't have any experience in building CMSs, and want to either use it, or get ideas of how to build a decent system. The time line is short, requirements are vague, yada yada Is Liferay a good technology to work with when showing the client (who may be very low on computer expertise) a user interface to build a site? The thing is, I want the power and flexibility to avoid the learning curve in building a CMS like product, but I don't want to waste time learning a new technology only to find its over-kill, or can't do the simple - but uncommon and unimplemented - things that we are asked to add as features Ideally I'd like to provide multiple web interfaces to the core API to build the sites - one that is very powerful, and another that is watered down and easy to use.

• Is it okay to be generalist?

  I work at a ~50 employee company (UK), where all the technical people do a bit of everything. Specialising in anything for very long (6 months) is discouraged. For example, last week, I built a new Debian webserver, refactored some Perl, sat on a sales phone call, did a tape backup, reviewed code, built and deployed an RPM, gave opinions about x, y, z... With such a work scheme, I have gained a general knowledge how many things work, and pretty specific knowledge. I maybe program for 5 hours a week, despite officially being a developer. Does anyone else work like this, (or is this company unique)? Is it a problem to have skills developed in this way? (i.e. know a bit about everything in a certain domain, rather than know everything about say, one programming language?) Is it okay to be a generalist?
