• Does a 77 Year Old Person Like To Use iPhone Siri? Of course!

  When Apple releases any product, they just work irrespective of age, capability and ability of the users. It’s in the DNA of Steve Jobs and his colleagues at Apple to build products that just work with out any learning curve. The recent iPhone is loaded with Siri, an intelligent personal assistant. But can a 77 year old person quickly learn to use Siri for his day to day activities? Lets hear from a son who trained his 77 year old dad to use Siri on iPhone He caught on much faster than I thought he might. I was feeling proud of him and believed Siri would be a real productivity help in his life — seeing that, at 77, my dad still works full time as a realtor. I was encouraged that he really liked and would use his new personal assistant. Or at least I was until my mom called later that night. "Your father and I were just practicing with his new phone," Sigh. Well Siri will be great for my dad…if and when he remembers how to find her. • TweetMeme Button or Template Plug-In for WLW

  In my search for a way to allow readers to tweet post that I put on GWB I have come across the TweetMeme plug-in for Windows Live Writer.  It automatically puts a twitter button at either the top or bottom of your post depending on how you configure it.  It comes with a warning that it does not work with blog servers that strip out script from posts which I made me afraid it was going to make it incompatible with GWB.  This turned out to be the case so I figured we would need either an upgrade to the GWB platform or writing my own WLW plug-in.  In comes the Template plug-in.  This allows you to have standardized content that you can insert with a couple of clicks via the interface below. This solved the problem (sort of).  It required that I remove the standard javascript that is defined by Twitter’s button page.  In the end I am hoping for an update to our Subtext implementation to incorporate features like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and G+, but this should help us until that comes along. • Enjoy Seamless Reading at Twitter in Chrome

  Twitter can be a lot of fun but having to constantly use the More Button to view a large number of tweets is frustrating. All that you need to be rid of that frustration is the More Tweets! extension for Google Chrome. Before Here it is…the classic “More Button”. If you are only interested in viewing a few tweets on occasion then it is not a problem. But if you are looking at a large number of tweets on a daily basis then it can be very frustrating. Notice the last tweet from TinyHacker shown here… After After installing the extension the only thing that you will need to do is refresh your Twitter page if you had it open before-hand. Now there will be a seamless connection from page to page when you are reading through tweets. You can see the TinyHacker tweet from above followed oh so nicely by tweets from the second page…this is definitely an improvement. For those who may be curious if you are quick enough with your mouse you can see what the “automated connection process” looks like. Conclusion If you are tired of constantly clicking the “More Button” and just want to read tweets without interruption then you will be very satisfied after adding this extension to your browser.   Oracle MySQL Engineer Ulf Wendel delivered yesterday a talk about his Proof of Concept at the International PHP Conference in Berlin entitled: “HTTP, JSON, JavaScript, Map and Reduce built-in to MySQL - make it happen, today.” The presentation has been featured today on the home page of SlideShare, both into the “Hot on Facebook” and “Hot on Twitter” sections. Well done, Ulf! Especially just before the wedding…:) Presentation abstract: See how a MySQL Server plugin can be developed to build all this into MySQL. A new direct wire between MySQL and client-side JavaScript is created. MySQL speaks HTTP, replies JSON and offers server-side JavaScript. • Ubuntu Desktop Environments, No Internet Access

  Windows has been a pain, so I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my parent's HP Pavilion first with Cinnamon. For the first few days, it worked wonderfully, and then stopped connecting to the internet. I tried using the windows partition and it worked fine. Posted a question about this - no answer yet. Since then, something happened while my parents were using it. The Windows partition was completely erased. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Cinnamon desktop. Worked great for a day, then same connectivity issue. Since Ubuntu works fine on my netbook without Cinnamon, I thought perhaps this was a Cinnamon issue. Removed Cinnamon and installed LXDE. LXDE, much like Cinnamon, worked well. Then I rebooted and couldn't connect to the internet. I encountered the same issue when using KDE. I would personally like something with a bottom panel as my parents are familiar and comfortable with Windows and can barely use their cell - phones so I do not think Unity will work too well for them. Ubuntu with Unity seems to be the only way to access the internet. My parents mostly use the internet to check email/facebook/watch video. Anyone know how to fix this?

• Oracle OpenWorld 2013: First glimpses of the new SOA Suite 12c by Lucas Jellema

  During this week’s Oracle OpenWorld Conference, we were given some sneak peeks into the short term future of the Oracle SOA Suite. During various roadmap sessions, on the demo grounds as well as in the keynote session by Thomas Kurian (the replay of which you can see here, new features were described and demonstrated, allowing us to get a fairly good overview of what is going to come for SOA Suite - later in 2013 and sometime in 2014 (probably the first half of that year). The SOA Suite plays an important part in the three themes Thomas Kurian set down for the Fusion Middleware suite of products: support for mobility, cloud and business user empowerment. Some of the highlighted new aspects of Oracle SOA Suite are: Adapters to connect from on-premise to in-the-cloud – specifically targeting SalesForce, RightNow and also providing an SDK to create custom integrations into the cloud (the first cloud adapters will be released on 11g, before the end of the year) Mobile enablement by exposing RESTful services that communicate using JSON as well as adding the capability to call out to such services (12c functionality) Enhanced functionality on Exalogic (of course it runs faster on Exalogic, up to 20 times) Modular runtime with a lighter footprint.   Since Ubuntu is the most popular distribution and has made a lot of changes in many places around the globe and in different industries up to the point where even people that do not know what Linux is, they know what Ubuntu is (go figure? ) there might be a movie coming someday (like the social network for Facebook or Revolution OS for Linux/Red Hat) i wanted to know how it all came to be from the actual players in the show. UBUNTU: The Movie Since i have seen several of the primary characters of the movie here, this might be a good place to start on how it all came to be. Not in the traditional wikipedia way or the ubuntu help section, but in the what the actual developers have in mind on how it all went down to the point of having a huge amount of users, an incredible level sophistication in the forum, help sections, installers, etc.. This is just to have the KNOW HOW before the actual movie makes it out some day in the future. As a fan of Ubuntu this is a MOST KNOW! ;) Hope i made some people happy and some other shy hehe.

• Why Your ERP System Isn't Ready for the Next Evolution of the Enterprise

    ERP has been the backbone of enterprise software.  The data held in your ERP system is core of most companies.  Efficiencies gained through the accounting and resource allocation through ERP software have literally saved companies trillions of dollars. Not only does everything seem to be fine with your ERP system, you haven't had to touch it in years.  Why aren't you ready for what comes next? Well judging by the growth rates in the space (Oracle posted only a 3% growth rate, while SAP showed a 12% decline) there hasn't been much modernization going on, just a little replacement activity. If you are like most companies, your ERP system is connected to a proprietary middleware solution that only effectively talks with a handful of other systems you might have acquired from the same vendor.   Connecting your legacy system through proprietary middleware is expensive and brittle and if you are like most companies, you were only willing to pay an SI so much before you said "enough."  So your ERP is working.  It's humming along.  You might not be able to get Order to Promise information when you take orders in your call center, but there are work arounds that work just fine. So what's the problem? The problem is that you built your business around your ERP core, and now there is such pressure to innovate your business processes to keep up that you need a whole new slew of modern apps and you need ERP data to be accessible from everywhere.   Every time you change a sales territory or a comp plan or change a benefits provider your ERP system, literally the economic brain of your business, needs to know what's going on.  And this giant need to access and provide information to your ERP is only growing. What makes matters even more challenging is that apps today come in every flavor under the Sun™.   SaaS, cloud, managed, hybrid, outsourced, composite....and they all have different integration protocols. The only easy way to get ahead of all this is to modernize the way you connect and run your applications.  Unlike the middleware solutions of yesteryear, modern middleware is effectively the operating system of the enterprise.  In the same way that you rely on Apple, Microsoft, and Google to find a video driver for your 23" monitor or to ensure the Word or Keynote runs, modern middleware takes care of intra-application connectivity and process execution.  It effectively allows you to take ERP out of the middle while ensuring connectivity to your vital data for anything you want to do.  The diagram below reflects that change.    In this model, the hegemony of ERP is over.  It too has to become a stealthy modern app to help you quickly adapt to business changes while managing vital information.  And through modern middleware it will connect to everything.  So yes ERP as we've know it is dead, but long live ERP as a connected application member of the modern enterprise. • Handling DataGrid.SelectedItems in an MVVM-friendly manner

  An interesting question from one of the MVVM Light users today: Is there an MVVM-friendly way to get a DataGrid’s SelectedItems into the ViewModel? The issue there is as old as the DataGrid (that’s not very old but still): SelectedItem (singular) is a DependencyProperty and can be databound to a property in the ViewModel. SelectedItems (plural) is not a DependencyProperty. Thankfully the answer is very simple: Use EventToCommand to call a Command in the ViewModel, and pass the SelectedItems collection as parameter.   A few weeks ago we published an article that explained how to use Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 5/11 to provide a virtual, multitiered architecture for Oracle Real Application Cluster (Oracle RAC) 11.2.0.2. We called it ... How to Deploy Oracle RAC on Zone Clusters Welllllll ... we just published another article just like it. Except that it's different. The earlier article was for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2. This one is for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3. This one describes how to do the same thing as the earlier one --create an Oracle Solaris Zone cluster, install and configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Oracle RAC in the zone cluster, and create an Oracle Solaris Cluster resource for Oracle RAC-- but for version 11.2.0.3 of Oracle RAC. Even though the objective is the same, and the version is only a dot-dot-dot release away, the process is quite different. • How To Attach Visual Studio 2010 To IIS Process Running On Windows 7

  Debugging ASP.NET application hosted on IIS 7 running of Windows 7 using Visual Studio 2010 is a bit different from debugging applications hosted on IIS running on Windows XP. The key differences are Visual Studio 2010 demands for administrator mode and IIS runs under the process name w3wp.exe instead of aspnet_wp.exe. Here are the detailed steps to attach Visual Studio 2010 debugger to IIS 7 on Windows 7. 1. Launch Visual Studio 2010 in Administrator mode(right click on Visual Studio Icon and choose the option Run as Administrator) 2. Open source code the site you want to debug 3. Go to Tools -> Attach to Process.; Opens up Attach to Process.  4.  In Attach to Process dialog box, check the option Show process in all sessions. 5. Search for the process w3wp.exe, and click on Attach button. 6. Accept the warning messages. That’s is you are done. Visual Studio is now attached with IIS for debugging. Happy coding. • Securing Back End API for Mobile Applications

  I have an application that I am writing for both iOS and Android; this application will be served by a ReSTFUL API running on a cluster of servers on "the internets". I am curious how the rest of the world is going about securing their APIs so only specific applications running on iOS or Android can use these APIs. I could go the same route as other OAuth providers by providing a key/secret combination (2-legged OAuth), however, what do I do if I ever have to change these keys??? Do I create a new key/secret for every person that downloads the app??? The application is a social-based game that will allow the user to interact with other "participants" in the game based on location, achievements, etc. The API will provide the following functions: -Questions, Quests, etc -Profile Management -User Interaction -Possible Social Interaction Once the app gains traction I plan on opening up the API ala Facebook, Twitter, etc. Which is easy enough, I plan on implementing an OAuth Server and whatnot. However, I want to make sure, during this phase, that only people who are using the application can access and use the API.

• Multithreading in Windows Phone 7 emulator: A bug

  Multithreading is supported in Windows Phone 7 Silverlight applications, however the emulator has a bug (which I discovered and was confirmed to me by the dev lead of the emulator team): If you attempt to start a background thread in the MainPage constructor, the thread never starts. The reason is a problem with the emulator UI thread which doesn’t leave any time to the background thread to start. Thankfully there is a workaround (see code below). Also, the bug should be corrected in a future release, so it’s not a big deal, even though it is really confusing when you try to understand why the *%&^$£% thread is not &$%&%$£ starting (that was me in the plane the other day ;) This code does not work: public partial class MainPage : PhoneApplicationPage { public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); SupportedOrientations = SupportedPageOrientation.Portrait | SupportedPageOrientation.Landscape; var counter = 0; ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(o => { while (true) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => { textBlockListTitle.Text = (counter++).ToString(); }); } }); } } This code does work: public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); SupportedOrientations = SupportedPageOrientation.Portrait | SupportedPageOrientation.Landscape; var counter = 0; ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(o => { while (true) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => { textBlockListTitle.Text = (counter++).ToString(); }); // NOTICE THIS LINE!!! Thread.Sleep(0); } }); } Note that even if the thread is started in a later event (for example Click of a Button), the behavior without the Thread.Sleep(0) is not good in the emulator.   The three most popular choices out there when it comes to computer operating systems, is Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. What we want to know is…which operating system do you use? Photo by ~Dudu,,]* Computer users today have more choices than ever when it comes to the operating system they use. In the Windows world, there are three versions out there in daily use. A lot of businesses and home users use XP, completely avoided Vista, and are starting to migrate to Windows 7. While a lot of home users received their new computer with Vista pre-installed and are still using it. Others were quick to jump to Windows 7, and some don’t want to leave the comforts of XP. Desktop Linux distro’s have been consistently growing in popularity as versions like Ubuntu become more user friendly. And let us not forget the loyal Apple users who would never give up OS X. You may have to use a certain OS at the workplace, but when you get home, your options are a lot more open. And now with the ease of virtualization, it’s easy to run multiple operating systems on one machine. Each OS offers different advantages that people pick based on their needs. • SQL SERVER – Convert Old Syntax of RAISEERROR to THROW

  I have been quite a few comments on my Facebook page and here is one of the questions which instantly caught my attention. “We have a legacy application and it has been a long time since we are using SQL Server. Recently we have upgraded to the latest version of SQL Server and we are updating our code as well. Here is the question for you, there are plenty of places we have been using old style RAISEERROR code and now we want to convert it to use THROW. Would you please suggest a sample example for the same.” Very interesting question. THROW was introduced in SQL Server 2012 to handle the error gracefully and return the error message. Let us see quickly two examples of SQL Server 2012 and earlier version.
