• Allow image upload - most efficient way?

  Hey everyone, In my site, I currently only allow users to import images from other sites rather than uploading it themselves. The main reason for this is because I don't have much storage space on my host (relatively speaking). The host charges quite a bit for additional space. What are the alternatives to hosting images users upload (max 1mb size). Would it be a good idea to purchase separate cheap hosting with "unlimited space" (I know that's not true, but I'm guessing it's more than 1gb)? Or are there some caveats with this approach (e.g. security since the site should not be browsable, but accessed via another server)? Are there alternative ideas that I could employ? Thanks for any suggestions

• Cannot access Azure Portal: We were unable to find any subscriptions associated with your account

  I am trying to get access to my Windows Azure Portal. Although I can access my user profile which shows two active subscriptions, I cannot access the portal (https://manage.windowsazure.com/). I get redirected to this site: https://manage.windowsazure.com/Error/NoSubscriptions, saying We were unable to find any subscriptions associated with your account. Now, this is a clear issue for the Azure support, but unfortunately, as azure thinks I don't have any subscriptions, I cannot get support, either, because I get redirected to the same error page. I've spent two hours talking and chatting with incompetent support people, i.e.: I've submitted feedback on the azure site but have no idea whether I will ever get a response. Maybe somebody has had this issue before, or can hint me which way to go?

• Two different sites, same IP, same top-level domain, on IIS 7.5 -- one works and the other displays HTTP 404 error

  I'm running a Windows 2008 R2 box with IIS 7.5 as the web server. On IIS, I have two websites: mysubsite1.mysite.com and mysubsite2.mysite.com. There is only one IP on the server and both sites share this IP. Here is how I have the bindings configured: mysubsite1.mysite.com works fine. However, mysubsite2.mysite.com gives me the following error: Not Found HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found. Now, if I change the Host name field for mysubsite1.mysite.com to blank and restart the web server, both sites work! The question is why is the host name field for the first site causing an HTTP 404 error for the second site when both sites' Host name fields are filled? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you.

• SQL Azure: Notes on Building a Shard Technology

  In Chapter 10 of the book on SQL Azure (http://www.apress.com/book/view/9781430229612) I am co-authoring, I am digging deeper in what it takes to write a Shard. It's actually a pretty cool exercise, and I wanted to share some thoughts on how I am designing the technology. A Shard is a technology that spreads the load of database requests over multiple databases, as transparently as possible. The type of shard I am building is called a Vertical Partition Shard  (VPS). A VPS is a mechanism by which the data is stored in one or more databases behind the scenes, but your code has no idea at design time which data is in which database. It's like having a mini cloud for records instead of services. Imagine you have three SQL Azure databases that have the same schema (DB1, DB2 and DB3), you would like to issue a SELECT * FROM Users on all three databases, concatenate the results into a single resultset, and order by last name. Imagine you want to ensure your code doesn't need to change if you add a new database to the shard (DB4). Now imagine that you want to make sure all three databases are queried at the same time, in a multi-threaded manner so your code doesn't have to wait for three database calls sequentially. Then, imagine you would like to obtain a breadcrumb (in the form of a new, virtual column) that gives you a hint as to which database a record came from, so that you could update it if needed. Now imagine all that is done through the standard SqlClient library... and you have the Shard I am currently building. Here are some lessons learned and techniques I am using with this shard: Parellel Processing: Querying databases in parallel is not too hard using the Task Parallel Library; all you need is to lock your resources when needed Deleting/Updating Data: That's not too bad either as long as you have a breadcrumb. However it becomes more difficult if you need to update a single record and you don't know in which database it is. Inserting Data: I am using a round-robin approach in which each new insert request is directed to the next database in the shard. Not sure how to deal with Bulk Loads just yet... Shard Databases:  I use a static collection of SqlConnection objects which needs to be loaded once; from there on all the Shard commands use this collection Extension Methods: In order to make it look like the Shard commands are part of the SqlClient class I use extension methods. For example I added ExecuteShardQuery and ExecuteShardNonQuery methods to SqlClient. Exceptions: Capturing exceptions in a multi-threaded code is interesting... but I kept it simple for now. I am using the ConcurrentQueue to store my exceptions. Database GUID: Every database in the shard is given a GUID, which is calculated based on the connection string's values. DataTable. The Shard methods return a DataTable object which can be bound to objects.  I will be sharing the code soon as an open-source project in CodePlex.   If I am targeting the same audience, but the new sub-site has different concept from the existing site, should I create a new sub-domain or create a new domain? What are the seo advantages and disadvantages of creating a new sub-domain? For example Stack Exchange with Alexa rank 1.474 right now, has sub-domains such as programmers.stackexchange.com and other domains such us serverfault.com with rank 3.515 and stackoverflow.com with rank 109. So why didn't Stack Exchange put, for example, Stack Overflow in a sub-domain to create a better ranking?

• Where can I download copies of a Windows XP ISO image with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7 for VirtualBox?

  I have Windows 7 Professional hosting Ubuntu inside VirtualBox for my development machine. To test my site, I run Internet Explorer and hit my Ubuntu box. This works great for Internet Explorer 8, the default browser on this Windows machine. I also want to run another VM with a copy of Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. Where can I download ISO image files of old copies of Windows XP? I've looked in Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image and these only run in Virtual PC/XP Mode which won't run while VirtualBox is running. If I have to run VirtualBox (can't work without Ubuntu running the site), is there any way to test Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8 from the same Windows 7 machine?

• DNS NAmeserver Aname and cname records [closed]

  I am inexperienced in the configuration of DNS and have an issue with dominan hosting set up. I have two domains 'www.mydomain1.com' and 'www.mydomain2.com', with mydomain2 pointed at the same place as mydomain1. The domains were passed to me recently by the person who previoulsy controlled them. I have an account with Fasthosts in the UK. When I accepted the domains I could not access the DNS settings and inquired with fasthosts as to why. The reply was: The delegate hosting option for both domains were enabled and this is the reason why you were unable to find the option to edit the advanced DNS records. I have now disabled the delegate hosting option so you can now edit the advanced DNS records for both domains in your account. When I log into the Fasthost control panel now I can access the DNS controls but both domains have no A record or Cname record set up. I am concerned that Fasthosts have blatted the previous Nameserver entries and set me up on theirs but not added any record. 'www.mydomain1.com' currently still works but 'www.mydomain2.com' does not find the site anymore. I am worried I will lose mydomain1 to as the DNS changes filter through the system. my webhosting is at 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' and this is where I want both domains to point. Any advice would be much appreciated. One thing which is confusing me is that because I am on a shared server I have to put 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' to get to my site rather than just 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'. The form on Fasthosts for the A name record only allows an IP to be entered - does it add the mydomain1.com/ onto the end itself? Thanks for any help given - I'm quite worried about this David

• Recommendations for managing DNS issues when hosting customer sites.

  I'm working at a company which primarily provides SaaS products but also will host some of our customers corporate websites. My question relates to recommendations for managing DNS for client's domain names. My objectives: Not restrict my ability to change the server's IP address such as might happen when I move my servers to a new host. Not have to contact the customer to change their domain's DNS if I need to change the server's IP address. Often times, customers lose this information or have to track down the one person with any knowledge of the domain settings. Map both .clientdomain.com and www.clientdomain.com to the proper IIS site. However, I'm running into a couple of common problems: Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company does not allow for CNAME records. Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company will not let me create a CNAME entry for .spiffydomain.com because the given hosting company has created a SOA record for that entry or simply requires that .spiffydomain.com be an A record. I believe one solution to #2 is to use a wildcard for a CNAME entry (i.e. *.spiffydomain.com). Is that correct? How do other folks that are hosting many customer's site manage change of DNS entries on their servers?

• Fonts doesn't render in Chrome or IE in Windows Server 2008

  When I visit, for example, http://www.bolagsverket.se from a user account on this Windows 2008 Server, Chrome displays the site but all the text is gone. When I try in IE it's even worse, it doesn't even load the page, I jsut end up with this: http://dl.pixelstore.se/image/0y1f0y0w1J39 The fonts used for this site is (from CSS): font-family:Frutiger,Frutiger Linotype,Univers,DejaVu Sans Condensed,Liberation Sans,Nimbus Sans L,Geneva,Helvetica Neue,Helvetica,Arial,Tahoma,sans-serif If I edit the CSS through Chrome Developer Tools, and erase all fonts until Arial it suddenly works. The strange thing is that everything works fine from the administrator account, it's just (all) the user accounts that doesn't work. My guess is that Chrome/IE is asking for the fonts but somehow they are restricted in the user account. Instead of just ignoring the fonts they can't find they try to render them anyway. Any clue?

  I have an entire website with the following directory structure: /example.com /html (public) /css /js index.php /lib session.php other_lib_files.php /views index.php /models /controllers As illustrated, the html is public, and anything above it is private. My site now needs to upgrade servers, and the new server (Linux w/ Plesk) has the following structure (reduced to the problematic parts below): /myplesksite.com /httpdocs /css /js index.php /private /lib /models /views What I would THINK is that I should be able to put my /lib, /views, /models, etc in the directory directly above /httpdocs, the same way I had it in my previous server. Is that possible? Or do I have to put it in private? I would really love not to have to adjust my internal paths throughout the site if not necessary...

• Handling changes to data types and entries in a database migration

  I'm fully redesigning a site that indexes a number of articles with basic search functionality. The previous site was written about a decade ago, and I'm salvaging about 30,000 entries with data stored in less-than-ideal formats. While I'm moving from MSSQL to MySQL, I don't need to make any "live" changes, so this is not a production-level migration issue so much as a redesign. For instance, dates are stored the same as tags/subjects about the articles, but in strings as "YYYYMMDDd" (the lowercase d stands for "date" in the string). Essentially, before or after I move from the previous database format to a new one, I'm going to need to do a lot of replacement of individual entries. While I understand how to do operations with regular expressions in non-database issues, my database experience isn't robust enough to know the best way to handle this. What is the best (or standard) way to handle major changes like this? Is there an SQL operation I should be looking into? Please let me know if the problem isn't clear--I'm not entirely sure what kind of answer I'm looking for.

  I want to setup a website using wordpress, which we can modified locally and then via subversion commit the site and make it public. This means to installing new plugins, changing the content, testing updates of wordpress to see if they work with the theme, etc. The idea is to control the development on the site, in case we need to keep track of the dev or roll back, because of unexpected bugs in a the plugins, theme, etc. I've read this article in codex, however I'm not sure how this is done when, we want to include the content and changes on the options of worpdress and plugins (which is in the mysql). • How many of you *really* surf around without JavaScript enabled? [closed]

  I've decided to rephrase the question. After some deliberation on Meta, I've realized that my question needs to be a bit more focused. The question: Should we (web developers) continue to spend effort progressively enhancing our web applications with JavaScript, ensuring that features gracefully degrade, thereby ensuring accessibility? Or should we spend that time focused on new features or other areas of development? The subtext of that question would be: How many of our customers/clients/users utilize our websites or applications with JavaScript disabled? Do you have any projects with requirements that specifically demand JavaScript functionality (almost all of mine do), and do those requirements also demand graceful degradation? For the sake of asking this question, I pulled up programmers.stackexchange.com without JavaScript enabled, and I was greeted with this message: "Programmers - Stack Exchange works best with JavaScript enabled". It was difficult to log in, albeit the site seemed to generally work okay. (I wasn't able to vote up any questions.) I think this is a satisfactory approach to development. Imagine the effort involved in making all of the site's features work with plain old HTML and server-side logic. OTOH, I wonder how many users have been alienated by this approach. We've all been trained (at least the good developers among us) to use progressive enhancement and to ensure our web applications' dynamic features degrade gracefully. Is this progressive enhancement just pissing into the wind, or do some of our customers actually utilize certain web services without JavaScript enabled? I mean, like really, not figuratively or presumptuously.

• Very large log files in IIS 7.x

  Hello, I had a site stop working today and when I RDP'd into the server I saw a warning about low disk space. The first thing I checked was the inetpub folder where the log files are stored and sure enough it was huge, 40 GB huge. I do clean the files monthly but what is causing a day's worth of logging on a medium activity site (www.vbdotnetforums.com) to create 300-500 MB log files? I do have everything being logged so my SmarterStats software gives me the most info, but are there specific things I should/can turn off that is causing the most growth in these log files? Also, sure would be nice if Microsoft someday had some sort of log file management such as deleting log files after they exceed a certain size (total), X days, etc. We all have to come up with some solution to delete the old ones manually.   Hi Can anyone recommend a commercial software package that enables automated rollouts of a bespoke software package across the internet? We are looking at approximately 1000 remote PC's that our organisation owns, geographically scattered and with varying bandwidths available from a central site. The PC's are not manned, they are used as server machines. The tool needs to have some scripting facilities too. The tool needs to be able to push software to the remote site in an automated way. We also need it to be able to reboot the remote machine too. Any ideas anyone? thanks.

• Using IIS7 as a reverse proxy

  Hi All, My question is pretty much identical to the question listed but they did not get an answer as they ended up using Linux as the reverse proxy. http://serverfault.com/questions/55309/using-iis7-as-a-reverse-proxy I need to have IIS the main site and linux (Apache) being the proxied site(s). so I have site1.com (IIS7) site2.com (Linux Apache) they have subdomains of sub1.site1.com sub2.site1.com sub3.site2.com I want all traffic to go to site1.com and to say anything that is site2.com should be proxied to linux box on internal network, (believe ARR can do this but not sure how). I can not have it running as Apache doing the proxying as I need IIS exposed directly. any and all advice would be great. Thanks

• Super slow website - show me what's been downloaded so far.

  Every now and then a website becomes super-slow (but not broken) because there are too many people looking at it at the same time. When I try and view such a site, say with firefox, I can see that it is downloading all sorts of components of the site because of the progress information printed at the bottom of the window and I'm sitting there thinking "If only the browser would show me what it's got so far. I don't care if its a jumbled mess, I just want to see what you've got". Does any browser offer such an option?

• How to Configure IIS 7.5 to Host Several Classic ASP Sites using 1 IP Address?

  We are running Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5 and have 4-5 Classic ASP sites to install. The main site is stored in wwwroot and the other sites are stored in folders below wwwroot. We have 1 IP address for the server. How do I configure IIS to allow folks to browse/test the sites before domain names are pointed to te server? When I setup one of the sites in a subfolder of wwwroot and assign a separate port to it, I receive a message stating: Config Error Cannot add duplicate collection entry of type 'add' with unique key attribute 'value' set to 'index.asp' How do I remedy this error and permit IIS to render the site?

• Formatting: Group Multiline Alignment - Added

  One week ago I have added two new properties for formating PHP code into NetBeans 7.1. In Alignment category there are new properties for Group Multiline Alignment - Assignment and Array Initializer.  The Assignment property influence position of the char '=' in a group of lines with assignments.  Let see the pictures below.  On the left site -  Assignment property is off and on the right site the property is on. As you can see, when the property is set on, then the assignment char '=' is placed after the longest identifier in a group. The group is defined as a number of lines that contains the same type of assignments. End of a group can be empty line, line where is only a comment, different expression, end of a block. This formatting options works for variable assignment, field initialization and constants.  The second new property is for Array Initializer.   Both properties are switched off by default. If you will play with it, please file any problem into our Bugzilla.

• Adsense-type services without the content check?

  Are there any ad-placing services that don't mind that the page is nothing but a page of ads? Someone else with a .cn tld is pointing to my IP address. I currently have that site on its own name based virtual host that responds to every request with a 403, but I figure if I am paying for the incoming bandwidth, I might as well try to make some money off it. I don't want to actually create any content for this site, which prevents me from using adsense. My only requirements are that it is free for me to sign up and that they don't mind the lack of content.
