• How to get wireless working (properly) with Sitecom Wireless USB micro adapter 300N on Windows 7?

  The question says it all, but more detail follows ;) I've got a new computer that runs Windows 7 64-bits (Home Edition) and I'd like to connect it to my wireless home network (Sitecom wireless gigabit router 300N wl-352 v1 002) with a Sitecom wireless USB micro adaptapter 300 wl-352 V2 001. After installing the router (i.e. connected to the modem and power) and ensuring that wireless is indeed enabled, I've installed the driver of the USB adapter on the new computer described above. After the installation (drivers and utility on CD) completes successfull I rebooted my computer and inserted the USB adapter. After discovering the right network and connecting to it using the network key, a connection is succesfully made. (Using the Sitecom 300N USB Wireless LAN utility). In the LAN utility I can see that the signal strength is approximately 50% and connection quality is approximately 80%. Judging from these numbers I assumed that all was fine and started to use the connection (reading news on nu.nl, a dutch news site), but noticed that the connection was lost several times in a very short time span, but each time the connections was resumed, resulting in the 50/80 percent numbers described above. However, the website was not loaded completely and often a timeout would be reported. When inspecting the drivers through Device Management (Windows' Apparaatbeheer in dutch) there were no errors/warnings; everything seemed to be in order. In an attempt to solve this, I downloaded the latest drivers for the USB adapter, but the problems remained. Finally I tried to connect the computer with a Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 108. This process was a troublesome since I had to download a driver (from the site above) and tell Windows (7) to use the Windows Vista driver when installing the new hardware, since there is (was) no Windows 7 driver available. This resulted in a usable connection, although not very stable when reconfiguring the router. Which took the form of selecting a different wireless channel on the router, even using the Sitecom utility mentioned above to check if there were other networks communicating on that channel (and thus picking a channel that was not used by other networks). Again no result when changing back to the Sitecom USB adapter. Note that this means (I think) that I could use the internet connection with the Siemens adapter, meaning the problem was not in the router. So: How to get wireless working (properly) with Sitecom Wireless USB micro adapter 300N on Windows 7? PS Sorry, but should be able to post one link, while I had links in place for the USB adapter, router and the siemens adapter in place as well, but I'm not (yet) allowed to post these... • Tackling thin content on an images gallery

  We run an images gallery as part of our site, however we have over 8,000 images and every image has a separate HTML page of its own to display the image caption, related image and comments from users of the site. This seems to be a problem especially with the Google Panda update because these pages are technically "thin content". What would be the best way to tackle this? We'd love some feedback and advice regarding this scenario. We have a few options we thought of already but can't decide: We could noindex the separate image pages and loose any image search listings we have for the image in favour of removing these thin pages from the index. We could 301 all of the individual image pages back to the image category listing and anchor each image (e.g. #img2122) and include all of the comments and description on the category listing page itself. If we was to simply list all of the images and content on the category pages themself; what's the best method? We could add all of the content in the anchor tags and use jQuery to display them in a box when a user clicks on the image or we could use Ajax to retrieve the information. However, what's the best Ajax method for SEO? Any ideas, suggestions, tips or advice is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for any given.

I was fed up of dictionary.com bringing all those popups and the stupid definitions of Google's dictionary. So I decided to scratch my own itch. I randomly stumbled on the site called Wordnik and it provides with all examples plus definitions plus lots more for words and its popup-free (as far as I know). So I decided to write and accelerator. • Would it be possible to create an open source software library, entirely developed and moderated by an open community?

  Call it democratic software development, or open source on steroids if you will. I'm not just talking about the possibility of providing a patch which can be approved by the library owner. Think more along the lines of how Stack Exchange works. Anyone can post code, and through community moderation it is cleaned up and eventually valid code ends up in the final library. For complex libraries an elaborate system should probably be created, but for a simple library it is my belief this is already possible even within the Stack Exchange platform. Take a library of extension methods for .NET for example. Everybody goes their own way and implements their own subset of what they feel is important, open-source library or not. People want to share their code, but there is no suitable platform for it. extensionmethod.net is the result of answering this call for extension methods, but the framework hopelessly falls short; there is no order, or structure at all. You don't know whether an idea is any good until you try it, so I decided to create an Extension Methods proposal on Area51. I belief with proper moderation, it could be possible for the site to be more than a Q&A site, and that an actual library (or subsets of it) could be extracted from it. Has anything like this been attempted before? Are there platforms better suited for this?

• Change the white background in webpages to another color

  I'm currently using a dark theme in firefox. It looks really nice, but many webpages use a plain white background. The resulting contrast is a little unpleasant and sometimes hurts the eye when I switch from a dark tab to a white tab. Is there a way to make firefox replace white backgrouns everywhere with some other color (light gray, for instance)? It could be a Stylish script, a userChrome.css hack, or anything that works (preferably as light as possible). To make myself clear: after I achieve my objective, the background color whenever I visit the super-user site should be light-grey instead of white, and the same should happen to any other site with a white background (google sites, tech crunch, etc). Is there a way to do that?

• VPN within a VM to allow for internet access on the host

  I have a network connection (created under Networks and Sharing) that I use to connect to a customer's site. But when I use this to connect to the site, I loose all access to the public internet, and can only access customer specific items. I want to circumvent this issue by creating a VM and then utilizing the VM to connect to the network location and interact within the customer's domain, while leaving my host machine open to the internet. I'm not extremely familiar with networking, but I have a few basic skills. Please let me know if this is possible and what the correct procedures are. I already have a VM created with VirtualBox, and both the host and guest are running Windows 7 x64. I have created duplicate VPNs already, but can only connect successfully on the host machine.

• Does purposely linking to an invalid URL and then using 301 affect SEO?

  On a section of my site, I am currently using .htaccess rewrites to put the ID as part of the URL instead of in the query, like so: RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)?/?tours/([0-9]+)/(.*) /tours/tour_text.php?lang=$1&id=$2&urlstr=$3 [L] For example, if someone goes to /en/tours/12/some-text-here it will rewrite it to /tours/tour_text.php?lang=en&id=12&urlstr=some-text-here. However I don't want the users to be able to put just any text, so if they type in the wrong some-text-here part it will 301 redirect them to the right page. This works perfectly, but I can see a potential problem potential arising when localizing the website, so I just wanted to make sure it's not actually a problem. How it is now, if someone goes to /en/tours/12/some-text-here, the anchor to the Spanish version of that page will be /es/tours/12/some-text-here (i.e. only changing the "en" to "es"), and then the script will then 301 them to the correct Spanish text (something like /es/tours/12/algun-texto-aqui). And the reverse will also be the same. The anchor on the Spanish version to the English version would be /en/tours/12/algun-texto-aqui and then they will be forwarded with 301 back to /en/tours/12/some-text-here. Basically, the anchor changes the language and the 301 changes the string at the end. So I have two questions: Does purposely and permanently having invalid URLs on your site that get 301'ed to the correct ones have any effect on SEO? I could make it just show the correct URL to begin with, but this is a significant amount of work due to how I am handling the translations, so I would prefer just to 301 them. Will the invalid URLs that are contained in the links be added to the search engine indexes even if they get 301'ed to another page?

• Mini keyboard has no home/end keys; how to type them?

  Some months ago I needed a small keyboard and bought an Okion KM229 without noticing that it has no Home or End key. This makes it tricky to type as I'm so used to using these keys. I haven't yet figured out if there is a key combination that issues Home and End keystrokes. Does anyone have experience of these keyboards and know how to issue those keystrokes? The keyboard is used on a PC running Windows XP. I have used the contact form on the Okion USA web site to ask this question but received no response. Wikipedia suggests that Home and End keystrokes are issued with Fn-Left and Fn-Right on some limited size keyboards. I may have tried those but don't remember for sure. I will try them again though when I am on site again in a week or so. Any other thoughts would be welcomed in the meantime.

I expect that my versions of PHP and MySQL are similar enough to work, but how do I get my server set up to work with this client's site as well?

• How does Google Analytics aggregate the Count of Visits (Frequency & Recency Report)?

  Here's my simple understanding of Count of Visits: Each person that comes to my site gets one "count" for each visit. They are put into a bucket of people with the same number of total counts -- if you visit twice, you are in the two bucket, if you visit six times, you are in the six bucket. From there, a report (Frequency & Recency) makes a line for each bucket and reaches into the bucket and totals the number of people in that bucket, putting that total in the second column. My Question: Will a two month report automatically put someone into two buckets, and put them on two separate lines in the Count of Visits table? This explaination makes it seem like a two-month long report will put the same person into a bucket twice, one bucket for each month. The two-month report will then show that person's visits on two different lines, instead of aggregating them. Example for Clarification: Bob comes to my site three times in January and seven times in February. I run a report for Jan 1 -- Feb 28. Will Bob be on both the Three Count line and the Seven Count line, or will he be on the Ten Count line?

• Hiding a column from a pivot table without removing it from the chart

  I have a pivot table with two columns: number of users who visited a website (impressions) and number of users who registered on the site (regs). The rows are for dates. I want to visualize the percentage of users who registered after visiting the site. Thus, I have the number of users for each cell as a value field, displaying it as percentage of impressions. Generating a pivot chart from the table, impressions and regs are plotted over date as a percentage of impressions. This means there is one line at 100% for impressions (always 100% of itself) and the graph for registrations below that. I'd like to remove the line for impressions, but when I set a filter to do so, registrations vanish as well, since the column for impressions is filtered from the pivot chart as well, turning the value field invalid. How can I just show registrations as a percentage of impressions in the chart?

• As a developer, how do I learn sales? [closed]

  I quit the company I was working for to pursuit an opportunity as a startup, and I believe in our product. I'm sure it's going to be great if we attract some customers first to keep going. (I don't want funding.) Our product is targeted at private schools and courses, and helps organize the mess other LMSs introduce. The problem is, our team is basically just me and I have very little idea about sales and marketing. I can do reasonably good copywriting but I'm sure I can do better—and being nervous or too techy in a real world conversation with the client doesn't help. I want to get better, in fact, a lot better at negotiating with clients and pitching my product. I did look for some “sales articles” on the web, and a lot of what I found is plain bullshit on SEO-engineered websites promoting books or $5000 courses. What I need instead is a developer's perspective on how to sale a product you think is great. What are typical programmer's mistakes and misconceptions about sales, and how to avoid them? How do you evolve into a reasonably great salesman? I can't believe it's in the mindset and unlearnable. Your own experience, combined with great articles available on the web is most welcome.   I am unable to find official wording and I'm hoping that some Rich Snippets/Schema Guru can give me some insight into proper usage of repeated content when it comes to using markup. I'm building a site that wants to use Schema as the markup type and the owner would like as much usage as possible. The business name, telephone and address will appear on every page now is it valid or even useful to use Rich Snippets on every page where this information is displayed. • Tell browsers to cache until last modified date changes?

  My web site consists of static HTML files which are usually republished once per day, and sometimes more. I'm using Apache. In the vhost settings for my site, I'd like to tell browsers to cache HTML files indefinitely, until Apache sees that they are modified. So as soon as an HTML file is changed, Apache should immediately begin telling browsers it's changed and send the updated file. As soon as a new file is published, browsers should immediately begin receiving that...they should never receive old versions of files. Maybe ExpiresByType text/html modification and no "plus x days." Is something like this possible?

• How to write a blog for SEO purpose

  I have a photo sharing website, which provides very little textual content. Users can add tags to photos and a description, but it creates a lot of duplicate content, because most of the descriptions will be 'wow', 'lol', ... I don't think I should rely on users to build my SEO. I think it would be a great idea to write a blog, and use it to describe the best photos, start contests, explain themes, in short: create original content that search engines will love. Our website's main URL is like www.domain.com, and our new blog is hosted on blog.domain.com. From a SEO perspective, is it a good idea to keep the blog separate from the main site? This has the advantage to leave the original site unchanged, but will it add any page rank to the www.domain.com? If the blog ranks well it will obviously pass some page rank to the original through links. What do you think is the best option from a SEO perspective? Include the blog in www.domain.com? Or leave it in blog.domain.com?

• Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server? • Do I need a VPN to secure communication over a T1 line?

  I have a dedicated T1 line that runs between my office and my data center. Both ends have public IP addresses. On both ends, we have a T1 routers which connect to SonicWall firewalls. The SonicWalls do a site-to-site VPN and handle the network translation, so the computers on the office network (10.0.100.x) can access the servers in the rack (10.0.103.x). So the question: can I just add a static route to the SonicWalls so each network can access each other with out the VPN? Are there security problems (such as, someone else adding the appropriate static route and being able to access either the office or the datacenter)? Is there another / better way to do it? The reason I'm looking at this is because the T1 is already a pretty small pipe, and having the VPN overhead makes connectivity really slow.

  Oracle OpenWorld Shanghai 2013 was held July 22nd – 25th at the International Expo Center in Shanghai, China. The conference drew over 19,000 attendees from 44 countries. In addition, 580 CxOs attended the Executive Edge program, and 430+ partners attended the Oracle Partner Network Exchange. The conference included a number of sessions on Big Data, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management delivered by Oracle, our partners and customers.  I had the pleasure to attend the conference and delivered three sessions focused on Oracle’s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications. Each of my sessions was well-attended, and in a few cases was standing room only, so there is clearly a lot of interest in the China market in EPM. The EPM and BI demo pods in the DemoGrounds at the conference also received a lot of traffic. In addition to the conference sessions I delivered, I had several meetings with customers and partners in Shanghai.These sessions and meetings I attended made clear the interest that customers in China have in improving their planning, management reporting, financial reporting, and profitability management processes. In fact, with the China Ministry of Finance now standardizing on XBRL for annual reporting across multiple agencies in China, there is a great opportunity here for our disclosure management application. • The best way to learn how to extend Orchard

  We do have tutorials on the Orchard site, but we can't cover all topics, and recently I've found myself more and more responding to forum questions by pointing people to an existing module that was solving a similar problem to the one the question was about. I really like this way of learning by example and from the expertise of others. This is one of the reasons why we decided that modules would by default come in source code form that we compile dynamically. it makes them easy to understand and easier to modify for your own purposes. Hackability FTW! But how do you crack open a module and look at what's inside? You can do it in two different ways. First, you can just install the module from the gallery, directly from your Orchard instance's admin panel. Once you've done that, you can just look into your Modules directory under the web site. There is now a subfolder with the name of the new module that contains a csproj that you can open in Visual Studio or add to your Orchard solution. Second, you can simply download the package (it's NuGet) and rename it to a .zip extension. NuGet being based on Zip, this will open just fine in Windows Explorer: What you want to dig into is the Content/Modules/[NameOfTheModule] folder, which is where the actual code is.
