  I am trying to install a multifunctional printer Laserjet M1212nf MFP on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and install the hplip indicated by the official web site. At the end of the installation I chose reboot the whole system and next I call hp-setup in the terminal (as normal user and then as root). After select in the dialog box my printer I got the following error: Searching...   I am creating a game using Javascript. I am not using the HTML5 Canvas Element. The game requires both side view controlles, and Isometric controls, hence the movementMode variable. However, when I do Math.tan(45), i get a number similar to 1.601. Why? To Sum up this question. I have a function, and i need a function which will converts an angle to a value, which will tell me the number of pixels that i need to go up by, if i only go across 1. Is it Math.tan that i want? or is it something else?

• Convience of mySQL over xml

  Currently I use XML to store specific information to correctly load a few things such as a list of specfied characters, scenes and music, Once more I use JAXB in combination with standard compression/decompression(ZIP) functionality to store a list of extrenous data. This data is called to add functionality to the character, somewhat like Skills in an RPG. Each skill is seperated into its own XML file with a grandlist which contains the names of each file with their extensions omitted and zipped in folder that gets encrypted. At first using xml was working fine however as the skill list grow i worry about its stability. I was wondering if I should begin storing the data in mySQL. Originally I planned to simply convert everything to JSON over xml but i think possibly mySQL would be a better move. Can anyone inform me of the key difference and pros and cons of each I guess i'm looking for the best way to store the data more conviently and would be easier to operate on. The data is mostly primatives and strings and the only arraylist of values i have i can just concat into a single field and parse later

  My /etc/resolv.conf constantly get a mysterious entry, i run a home network with ipv6 provided by ravd, the interface is auto-configured by Network manager (all name server lookups are lost when this line is first in my /etc/resolv.conf) . Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) **# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN** nameserver fd00::1 nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int When ping is working cat /etc/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int So something is putting fd00::1 at start of file, not if I ping6 fd00::1 I get Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibited To diagnose this I ran the router with single cable to connected to ubuntu machine. Ran tcpdump + restarted network on ubuntu. "tcpdump ip6 -e -i eth0 | grep fd00" finds nothing, it's not being advertised via the network.. The only hit I got was when an upstream router refused a connection attempt from the ubuntu machine to fd00::1. • HTML5 data-* (custom data attribute)

  Goal: Store custom data with the data attribute on any DOM element and retrieve it. Previously under HTML4 we used to use classes to store custom data, something to the affect of <input class="account void limit-5000 over-4999" /> and then have to parse the data out of the class In a book published by Peter-Paul Koch in 2007, ppk on JavaScript, he explains why and how to use custom attributes to make data more accessible to JavaScript, using name-value pairs. Accessing a custom attribute account-limit=5000 is much easier and more intuitive than trying to parse it out of a class, Plus, what if the class name for example "color-5" has a representative class definition in a CSS stylesheet that hides it away or worse some JavaScript plugin that automatically adds 5000 to it, or something crazy like that, just because it is a valid class name. As you can see there are quite a few reasons why using classes is a bad design and why it was important to define custom data attributes in HTML5. Syntax: You define the data attribute by simply prefixing any data item you want to store with any HTML element with "data-". For example to store our customers account data with a hidden input element: <input type="hidden" data-account="void" data-limit=5000 data-over=4999  /> How to access the data: account  -     element.dataset.account limit    -     element.dataset.limit You can also access it by using the more traditional get/setAttribute method or if using jQuery $('#element').attr('data-account','void') Browser support: All except for IE. There is an IE hack around this at http://gist.github.com/362081. Special Note: Be AWARE, do not use upper-case when defining your data elements as it is all converted to lower-case when reading it, so: data-myAccount="A1234" will not be found when you read it with: element.dataset.myAccount Use only lowercase when reading so this will work: element.dataset.myaccount

• Self-referencing anonymous closures: is JavaScript incomplete?

  Does the fact that anonymous self-referencing function closures are so prevelant in JavaScript suggest that JavaScript is an incomplete specification? We see so much of this: (function () { /* do cool stuff */ })(); and I suppose everything is a matter of taste, but does this not look like a kludge, when all you want is a private namespace? Couldn't JavaScript implement packages and proper classes? • How to sync Ubuntu/software/configurations between N computers with free software and/or without a cloud?

  Note: this question is not about syncing data in a Dropbox-like way (files, folders), it is more about syncing configurations. I would like to have exactly the same version of Ubuntu with all the software installed and configured both on my Desktop PC and on my Laptop PC (and maybe on my small netbook PC) without using Ubuntu Sync and with minimal maintenance effort (setup once, run for a long time). The use case is the following: I work on my Laptop PC and do some changes to software configuration, for example: configure vim to have a new plugin update the Search Tracker / Recoll file search index configure Thunderbird to have an additional IMAP account ('remember password') add some new bookmarks in Firefox/Chrome change the desktop background image install new software with apt-get install build and install new software with checkinstall etc. I do some 'sync' operation I switch to my Desktop PC and get all the changes from (1) working on the Desktop PC I work on my Desktop PC and do some changes to software configuration, for example: add new directory to the list of directories to be backed up by DejaDup add a new check spelling dictionary to the Libreoffice Writer configure the Terminator software to have colored fonts install new font into the Ubuntu system configure Ekiga to make phone calls etc. I do some 'sync' operation I switch to my Laptop PC and get all the changes from (1) and (4) working on the Laptop PC. Question: What free/open-source software can I use to sync both machines' Ubuntu systems, installed software and configurations? Is it possible to do that without any cloud services? Complementary question: It is obvious that the Desktop PC and the Laptop PC have different hardware configurations. How does the 'sync software' in question deal with video drivers, wlan drivers and their configurations? Note: I do not need all the PCs to be synced at the same time, because I work with only one single machine at once. Note: I considered to use Chef to solve the problem, but it seems that it might be really cumbersome to maintain such a setup. Note: I also considered using a bootable USB with Ubuntu installed (portable Linux), but I am not sure that the video drivers will work then.

  Let's pretend I am going to work on an enterprise application. Say I have 11 modules in the application and I would have to develop Dashboards for every role in the organization for whom I are going to develop application. We Decided to use Asp.Net Web Api and return json data from our apis. We are going to include 11 Self hosted web apis projects in our application (one self hosted web api) for every module. All 11 modules are connected to one Sql server 2012 Database. Then once api is ready we would have to create Business Dashboards (Based upon roles in Organization). So Now my web api client is Asp.Net Mvc application.Asp.Net mvc will consume those web apis. Here is the part for whom all explanation is done. How should I manage Security of all 11 self hosted web apis? How should I only authenticated request is coming? If I authenticate user by login and password and then redirect user to appropriate Dashboard designed for the role that user have and load data by consuming web apis. How should I ensure that the request coming for accessing data is authenticated?

• So we've got a code review tool, now what can we use for software documents?

  We're using Subversion as a full CM for code and also for related project documents. We have JIRA and Fisheye. When we wanted to add a peer review tool, we looked at and tested several candidates. Our weighted requirements included both code and document review, but ultimately, the integration with JIRA slanted the scores in Crucible's favor. Atlassian has slammed the door on ever supporting Word or PDF in Crucible. I've tested several workaround methods to make Crucible work for documents without success. (The Confluence/Crucible plug-in was deprecated by Atlassian, so that option is out, too.) I haven't found a plugin for Crucible that adds this functionality, so short of writing my own plug-in, Crucible for documents is unworkable. Word Track Changes doesn't provide a method for true collaboration and commenting. Adobe PDF Comment and Markup is interesting, but doesn't provide a great way to keep a permanent quality record of the conversation. We can't go cloud-based, our documents must be locally hosted on our own server only. We're only on Sharepoint 2007. Help! Anyone have a suggestion?

• Restful WebAPI VS Regular Controllers

  I'm doing some R&D on what seems like a very confusing topic, I've also read quite a few of the other SO questions, but I feel my question might be unique enough to warrant me asking. We've never developed an app using pure WebAPI. We're trying to write a SPA style app, where the back end is fully decoupled from the front end code Assuming our service does not know anything about who is accessing/consuming it: WebAPI seems like the logical route to serve data, as opposed to using the standard MVC controllers, and serving our data via an action result and converting it to JSON. This to me at least seems like an MC design... which seems odd, and not what MVC was meant for. (look mom... no view) What would be considered normal convention in terms of performing action(y) calls? My sense is that my understanding of WebAPI is incorrect. The way I perceive WebAPI, is that its meant to be used in a CRUD sense, but what if I want to do something like: "InitialiseMonthEndPayment".... Would I need to create a WebAPI controller, called InitialiseMonthEndPaymentController, and then perform a POST... Seems a bit weird, as opposed to a MVC controller where i can just add a new action on the MonthEnd controller called InitialisePayment. Or does this require a mindset shift in terms of design? Any further links on this topic will be really useful, as my fear is we implement something that might be weird an could turn into a coding/maintenance concern later on?

• (PHP vs Python vs Perl) vs Ruby [closed]

  OK, here's what : I've programmed in over 20 different languages and now, because of a large project I'm currently working on for Mac OS X (in Objective-C/Cocoa), I need to make a final decision on which language to use for my background scripting + plugin functionality. Definitely, one factor that'll ultimately influence my decision is which one I'm most familiar with, which is PHP (one of the ugliest languages around, which I however adore... lol), then Python / Perl (the "proven values"... )... and then Ruby (which, to me, is almost confusing and I've only played with it for some time.) Now, here's my considerations : (As previously mentioned) Being familiar with it (anyway, if X is better in my case, I really don't mind studying it from scratch...) Speed Good interaction with the Shell + ease of integration with my Cocoa application Btw, some of the reasons that made me wonder if Ruby would be a good choice is : The hype around it (although, I still don't get why; but that's probably just me...) My major competitor (we're actually talking about the same type of software here) is using Ruby for its backend scripting almost exclusively (ok, along with some BASH). Isn't Ruby considered slower e.g. than Perl? Why did he choose that? Simply, a matter of personal taste? So... your thoughts?

• How to make pulseaudio and ubuntu detect the same audio device as alsa driver

  I use Ubuntu 14.04 x64 and I use gnome-shell on my laptop. I have a Bose companion 5 (which is basically a USB sound system) and a HDMI port, both does work perfectly when I just boot with the cable plugin. However, when my laptop go to sleep or get unplugged from those two outputs, if I plug back the device, I end up without any hardware detection (only the built-in speakers) from pulse and gnome-shell sound output selector while if I use alsamixer, the device look up and ready. gstreamer-properties allow me to select and test effectively any device but while alsa recognize any device on the run, pulse is not capable of handling things correctly, my question is then: How can I make pulse detect and use the same hardware as alsa, or how to remove completely and gracefully pulseaudio (meaning volume applet running in gnome shell) I don't mind if the project implies to recompile half gnome shell if it implies those audio outputs work all the time. Pulse does not list my soundcard when I use command pactl list cards while the module plug&play for sound card is loaded in pactl list modules. I really don't know what to do, the behavior seems pretty random.

• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! EDIT Temporary solution is this file: http://www.andrewpatton.com/countrylist.csv It contains a list of countries including various other info, like the short country name, the same name that's used for the flag images. • How to overcome politics of the net (Google translate code refuses to work from a specific region)

  According to the FAQ's I am not sure if my question is a ok to ask or will be closed or should I post it in the meta or even I would blame some one for downvoting it. However it is one that has been bugging me since the trouble strated. Let me explain. I have this Web Site. It uses the Google Translate API (Can't post the link, does not open from this region) with the following code. <meta name="google-translate-customization" content="9f841e7780177523-3214ceb76f765f38-gc38c6fe6f9d06436-c"></meta> <script type="text/javascript"> function googleTranslateElementInit() { new google.translate.TranslateElement({pageLanguage: 'en'}, 'google_translate_element'); } </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://translate.google.com/translate_a/element.js?cb=googleTranslateElementInit"></script> The problem is since this, it just stopped working. On the site you can see that I had to actually remove the above from here, here, and here while left it here, here, here and here. This is so because the the web site "refuses" to load at all with the pages that have the code (i.e., from this region.) If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?
