• SOA Forcing A Shift In IT Governance

  As more and more companies adopt a service oriented approach to developing and maintaining existing enterprise systems, IT governance also needs to shift its philosophies to fit the emerging development paradigm. When I first started programming companies placed an emphasis on “Code and Go” software development style. They only developed for current problems and did not really take a look at how the company could leverage some of the code we were developing across the entire enterprise system.  The concept of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has dramatically shifted how we develop enterprise software with emphasizing software processes as company assets. This has driven some to start developing new components as processes strictly for the possibility of future integration of existing and new systems. I personally like this new paradigm because it truly promotes code reusability. However, most enterprise level IT governance polices were created prior to the introduction of SOA in their respected organization. This can create a sense of the Wild West for developers working on projects related to SOA. This is due to the fact that a lot of the standards and polices implemented by enterprise IT governing boards were initially for developing under the “Code and Go” paradigm and do not take in to account idiosyncrasies found in the SOA/integration based development. As IT governance moves forward its focus should aim more for “Develop to Integrate” versus “Code and Go” philosophies. Examples of “Develop to Integrate” Philosophy: Defining preferred data transfer methodologies (XML vs. JSON), and when to use them Updating security best practices for exposing public services based on existing standard security policies Define when to use create new SOA project vs. implementing localized components that could be reused elsewhere in the enterprise.

• What benefits can I get upgrading my ASP.NET (Webform) + DAL(EF) + Repository + BLL structure to MVC?

  I'm in the process of defining an approach that may best fit our needs for a big web application development. For now, I'm thinking going with an ASP.NET Architecture with a DAL using Entity Framework, a Repository concept to not access DAL directly from BLL and a BLL that call the repository and make every manipulations necessary to prepare data to push in a presentation layer (.aspx files). I don't plan to use ASP.Net controls and prefer to keep things simple and lightweight using plain html, jQuery UI controls and do most of the server calls with jQuery Ajax. Sometimes, when needed, I plan to use handlers (.ashx) to call BLL methods that will return JSON or HTML to client for dynamic stuff. My solution also has a test project that Mock the Repository with in-memory data to not repose on database for testing BLL methods... It may be usefull to add that we will build a big application over this architecture with hundreds of tables and store procedures with a lot of reading and writing to database. My question is, having this architecture in mind, Is there any evident advantages that I can obtain by using an MVC3 project instead of the described architecture base on Webform? Do you see any problem in this architecture that may cause us problem during the next steps of development? I know the MVC pattern for using it in others projects with Django... but the Microsoft MVC implementation look so much more complex and verbose than Django MVC and it's why I'm hesitating (or waiting for a little push?) right now before jumping into it... We are in a real project with deadlines and don't want to slow the development process without any real benefits.

• Efficient coding in Visual Studio (or another IDE), with touch typing

  Moving the cursor to another position in code is one of the most frequent actions when coding. I don't write my programs from the beginning to the end, like a letter. However, moving the cursor requires me to move my right hand to the key arrows or to the mouse, which feels like an interruption to my writing rhythm, since I'm using touch typing. I want my hands to rest on the keyboard. It's difficult to explain what I mean, but I think every coder using touch typing knows what I mean. I tried many things, like defining some shortcuts as surrogate arrow keys (Shift+Alt+J, K, L, I), or buying a keyboard with a Trackpoint, Trackpad, or Trackball on it, but I have not yet found a satisfying solution to the problem. What is the best solution you know of, regardless of which IDE you use? Edit: Thank you for your answers. I am using a lot of shortkeys, but I think using a Vim plugin in Visual Studio would interfere too much with the shortkeys I am used to. Also, I have a keyboard with a built-in mouse, but I'm still looking for a better solution.

• Ubuntu Desktop does not load

  If I login on my Ubuntu 14.04, I get the following desktop: This weird behavior appeared after I executed sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and restarted my computer. Don't know why though. • Coda-like experience for Ubuntu

  I'm a web developer who's going to transition from using Mac OS X to Ubuntu. I've been using Coda for some time, only because it makes web development easy. I know a full fledged app isn't available for Linux, but would like to know about apps that specialize in the same tasks that Coda offers. I plan on switching to Vim for code editing, I'm extremely proficient and will install the Janus plugin and be good to go for editing code. One thing that makes editing on Coda so amazing is its extremely good at SFTP, you can drag and drop files and/or folders from your local drive to the server. Also, you can edit code directly on the server. The problem here, is that using Vim I don't know of a way to edit code on a remote server, while using my own Vim settings and plugins. To solve this, I would like to know of a good SFTP client OR a good SFTP CLI. A CLI that could synchronize your files after a file has been modified would be perfect, but not necessary. Now, one of the biggest and best features of Coda is its ability to view your databases. You get to create a database, create tables, add stuff, delete stuff and view the contents of the table (all this without writing a single SQL statement). I will admit that databases are my weak point, but is a very important part of my job. If there is a tool that specializes in databases would be perfect. I wouldn't prefer to use the command line for database stuff, but if there is a CLI for databases that I'm missing could potentially be useful. So I guess I'm asking for two things. A tool that makes databases easier to visualize and a tool that assists in pushing my local code to a server.

• Applying Textures to Hexagonal Tiles Seamlessly

  I'm doing a tactical game (X-Com / Fallout style) for fun. I've decided to use a hexagonal map, but I'm having a graphic problem. My current map display is HUD-like, with only the border of the map cells displayed, without any texture. it's simple and allow for display of different types of informations by varying the color of the border. For exemple the "danger view mode" displays the borders with a color going from green (no damage possible) to red (prob of damage 90%). Now, It's a bit hard to differentiate the kind of tile the player is on. I could put a plain color (green is grass, pale blue is water...), but this is going to limit the possibilities. Thus, i would like to display a texture on my tiles. Since the map are generated, i can not use a picture for the whole map with the HUD over. So, my question is : does any one knows how i could generate the sealess hexagonal textures (algo or plugin), or if there is a site with some hexagonal tiles ?

• Kinect Hacking at Microsoft Developer Days 2012 Bulgaria

  Last week I had a pleasure to speak at the Microsoft’s Developer Days 2012 in Sophia, Bulgaria. It was a great conference and I met lots of cool people there. I did a session about Kinect Hacking. My goal was to give a good understanding of Kinect inner workings, how it can be used to develop Windows applications. Later I showed examples of interesting projects utilizing the full potential the Kinect sensor. Below you can find my slides and source code of one of the demos (the one where “Szymon went to the Moon”). But I wasn’t the only one to talk about Kinect. On the 2nd day Rob Miles also did a fun session titled “Kinect Mayhem: Psychedelic Ghost Cameras, Virtual Mallets, a Kiss Detector and a Head Tapping Game” (you can watch recording of this session from TechDays Netherlands on Channel9). Later that day Yishai Galatzer made a big surprise during his session about Extending WebMatrix, and showed a plugin enabling to take control of WebMatrix with Kinect gestures. Best thing was that he wrote it during the conference, with no previous experience with Kinect SDK (I might helped him a bit to get started). Thanks for the invitation and I hope to see you soon!

• What is UVIndex and how do I use it on OpenGL?

  I am a noob in OpenGL ES 2.0 (for WebGL) and I'm trying to draw a simple model I've made with a 3D tool and exported to .fbx format. I've been able to draw some models that only have: A vertex buffer, a index buffer for the vertices, a normal buffer and a texture coordinate buffer, but this model now has a "UVIndex" and I'm not sure where am I supposed to put this UVIndex. • How should an API use http basic authentication

  When an API requires that a client authenticates to it, i've seen two different scenarios used and I am wondering which case I should use for my situation. Example 1. An API is offered by a company to allow third parties to authenticate with a token and secret using HTTP Basic. Example 2. An API accepts a username and password via HTTP Basic to authenticate an end user. Generally they get a token back for future requests. My Setup: I will have an JSON API that I use as my backend for a mobile and web app. It seems like good practice for both the mobile and web app to send along a token and secret so only these two apps can access the API blocking any other third party. But the mobile and web app allow users to login and submit posts, view their data, etc. So I would want them to login via HTTP Basic as well on each request. Do I somehow use a combination of both these methods or only send the end user credentials (username and token) on each request? If I only send the end user credentials, do I store them in a cookie on the client?

• AJAX driven "page complete" function? Am I doing it right?

  This one might get me slaughtered, since I'm pretty sure it's bad coding practice, so here goes: I have an AJAX driven site which loads both content and javascript in one go using Mootools' Request.HTML. Since I have initialization scripts that need to be run to finish "setting up" the template, I include those in a function called pageComplete(), on every page Visiting one page to another causes the previous pageComplete() function to no longer apply, since a new one is defined. The javascript function that loads pages dynamically calls pageComplete() blindly when the AJAX call is completed and is loaded onto the page: function loadPage(page, params) { // page is a string, params is a javascript object if (pageRequest && pageRequest.isRunning) pageRequest.cancel(); pageRequest = new Request.HTML({ url: '<?=APPLICATION_LINK?>' + page, evalScripts: true, onSuccess: function(tree, elements, html) { // Empty previous content and insert new content $('content').empty(); $('content').innerHTML = html; pageComplete(); pageRequest = null; } }).send('params='+JSON.encode(params)); } So yes, if pageComplete() is not defined in one the pages, the old pageComplete() is called, which could potentially be disastrous, but as of now, every single page has pageComplete() defined, even if it is empty.   I am adding QapTcha (http://demos.myjqueryplugins.com/qaptcha/) to a website that I am working on and I'm getting the error "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'error' of null". What's weird to me is everything is working perfectly locally. No errors or anything. Once I uploaded via ftp to the live server, I get the above error.   I am a novice at Ubuntu and unfortunately i have deleted 3 files in the usr/bin folder python 2.7 python python 2.6 Now my update manager wont work and when i type in python into gnome it says that it is no longer there. Please help me ive tried loads of different things but it just wont work. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears.   I need to rebuild an old huge website and probably to port everyting to ASP.NET and jQuery and I would like to ask for some suggestion and tips.   Whenever I lock the screen, after a certain amount of time, the cpu and the cpu fan use go up near the limit, and it returns back to normal the moment I unlock the screen again (as shown by psensor). On the site you can see that I had to actually remove the above from here, here, and here while left it here, here, here and here. This is so because the the web site "refuses" to load at all with the pages that have the code (i.e., from this region.) If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?
