• Reboot loop after Windows XP Service Pack 3 update

  Recently I upgraded to Service Pack 3, and now it seems that something has gone terribly wrong with the update. After logging in, my computer will blue screen after about 5 minutes and then go into a reboot loop (I don't have the exact error message handy). I have a Sager NP2092 notebook, running an Intel chipset. I'd rather avoid having to reformat my XP, especially with my copy of Windows 7 arriving right around the corner. After doing some Googling, I came across this article: Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3? However, it deals with the AMD chips, and specifically states not to use its fix on Intel based systems. EDIT After killing the reboot, this is the error that pops up: STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8A187118, 0x8A18728C, 0x80604438) EDIT2 I have run Memtest86, and it reported 0 errors.

  I have a HTC HD2 which runs Windows Mobile 6.5. The way you can integrate different accounts is just amazing. You can integrate facebook,twitter,youtube. You can also sync your mail, and calendar from Hotmail or Gmail. It all works just great. Now my problem is that I have different profiles. I have my personal profile, and on the other side I have work profile. My work email is on Gmail Apps, so I have a mail and calendar there also. I also have a personal facebook account, and one I use for work. So my question is if there is a way of switching between these profiles quickly.

• How do I minor upgrade MySQL on Windows?

  I currently have MySQL 5.1.35 installed on a Windows 2008 server via the MSI installer. I need to upgrade to the latest 5.1.44 to fix a bug, but docs were not clear on how to do this. I ran the MSI installer, but it did not give me any upgrade option so I quit it. I am weary because it's a production machine with many PHP websites running on it. Also, my data directory is not the default one, it's kept on another partition. How can I upgrade it? Thanks for any help.

  I tried to put everything in the title : I'm looking for a software that is able : to work with image (raw file), partition & whole disk, without distinction to copy whole image or only selected part (let's say .. from 0 to end of last partition, excluding free space for example ; or with start + offset/end system) to handle compression (at least gzip) You recognized, I'm looking for a "dd | gzip" utility with GUI on Windows. The closest tool I found so far is http://www.dubaron.com/diskimage/ but it's a bit old and don't have compression support. Any idea ?

• Drag lock crisis with Windows 7 and Apple Magic Trackpad

  This is driving me insane and I've scowered the web for two days trying to fix this. I just picked up an Apple Magic Trackpad to be used exclusively on a Windows 7 PC (not apple with bootcamp). I found a nice driver that got it working right away, but when I'm moving the cursor around the screen, often it will begin "highlighting" text, or picking up and dragging things I don't want it to. I looked in the "regedit" where people are saying there is binary that can be changed, however the driver I installed doesn't use the binary being suggested. Can anyone suggest a better driver for my situation or a way to disable the drag lock that is driving me so nuts? I don't mind not being able to lift my finger when dragging, it's a far better compromise than having the insane feature.

  I'm looking at ways that may be possible to distribute a Microsoft Windows (e.g. 7) virtual appliance (such as VMWare image) pre-configured and installed with a large application of mine. Is this possible? If not, is it perhaps best to ask clients to perform a virtual appliance installation on their site and then install my application via a script of some sort? For these kinds of scenarios I see that open source OSes are heavily used, but in my case I cannot use Linux or any other open source OS due to some requirements.

  I have a dell studio 1555 laptop with a GPU inside. The details are below; Hardware details Software details I can play games in widescreen in Vista, but not in 7. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the latest Catalyst Control Center. Instead of widescreen, the games are running in a classic style, say 1024x768 ratio. When I play need for speed underground, the maximum possible resolution is 1024x768 (all other games are like this). I have no problem with HD videos and anything else. How can I fix this? • Run a command from Windows 7 Start Menu

  I'm trying to run commands such as "cmd.exe", "appwiz.cpl" etc by typing it in the Search box of the Start Menu in Windows 7 (x86). I'm able to do this just fine in Vista. After typing in "cmd" I notice that I see a link to "Programs" in the start menu so it seems that "cmd" is being recognized but when I click on "Programs" link which is shown,I get the following message. "These files can't be opened. Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened" P.S. - I'm not looking for enabling the "Run" command to show in the Start Menu Any help would be much appreciated

But after reboot it again wants to do a system recovery. Safe mode doesn't work; it still wants to do a system recovery. Putting in the install DVD trying to do a repair actually brings up the very same System Revoery dialog again. Nothing has changed configuration wise. Any ideas?

• cannot run CMD script from Vista windows explorer

  I am running Vista Home Premium. I tried to write a script to do some simple automation.... it does not work! even the most simple script like: @echo ON dir . does not get executed and only an empty CMD shell pops open when started from explorer. From the cmd windows there is no problem. This is really weird and I have never seen this before (but wrote many CMD scripts before) ftype cmdfile and batfile are unchanged from "%1" %* virusscan done - no problems Is there a policy setting that might have changed? Any ideas?

• Windows Home Server Passwords Do Not Match

  I have a Windows Home Server that chunks along just fine most of the time. I've never bothered to put it on a UPS and so it's vulnerable to power outages that happen a few times a year. This most recent time, it came back and seemed to be fine, but whenever I try to access a shared folder I get "Passwords do not match". They matched before the power went out, and I couldn't update the WHS password since I apparently didn't know the old one. How do I fix this? (I asked this on ServerFault and they recommended it be asked here instead)

• Problem opening files with Gvim on Windows 7

  Just installed gvim on windows 7 for the first time, and I'm having a problem opening some files. When I open files vim seems to flash up a cmd window for a few second before closing it (too quickly to make out the contents,) and I end up with a C:/Program folder, and a /Files/vim/vimfiles/doc/ in the directory of the file I just opened. I can see it's trying to access C:/Program Files/vim/vimfiles/doc, which is where vim is installed, however it's choking on the space, and I'm not familiar enough with gvim to work out why. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

• Do most "normal" people use metro or desktop in Windows 8

  Just curious since I don't fit the definition of a "normal" computer user nor have my friends or relatives upgraded to Windows 8 yet. Are most people in the "wild" (i.e. the "guy in starbucks" or "your friend who works as an auto tech". not you since you are on SU) using metro apps regularly to the point where the desktop is pointless or are they sticking with the desktop? I've gotten mixed statistics from Google. I'm asking for your personal anecdotal opinion based on what you notice in the wild.

• Windows 2008 additional disk going offline with reboots on Amazon EC2

  OK, so I took the stock Windows 2008 64-bit Amazon AMI and wanted to add a D: drive for page file space and crash dumps. I launched the instance with a second EBS volume attached as xvdf and went into Disk Management set it online, and added the page file and crash dump settings and all that works. But when I reboot, the box comes back up with that second drive as "Offline." How do I get that disk to automatically come online on reboot (or most notably, when I turn this into an AMI and launch more instances off it - I've tried that too and same deal with the D:).

The main idea is that a file watcher checks for the file and then copy it instantly. But how can I know in what server it's the file? • Get the wireless adapter frequency-band mode in Windows 7

  I have a dual-band 802.11n router operating in both frequency bands with the same SSID. My Windows 7 laptop has a dual-band wireless adapter. Is there a way to find out which frequency band is the one currently used by the client? Also, is there a way to set the preffered band? Thanks. EDIT1: The router is Linksys E4200 (V2) and I essentially want to keep the 2.4GHz band in the mixed-mode so that the legacy 802.11g devices can connect while allocating the 5.0GHz band for 802.11n devices.   I installed the release preview of Windows 8, which comes with Internet Explorer 10. IE10 has been endowed with a spell checking Feature, which is active while I write this text. As a matter of principle, I disable spell checking anywhere I go. I simply hate spell checking. I know better than the spell checker. (And when not it doesn't matter.) This is all the more annoying as I write in several languages and the spell checker only does one language (German, in this case), and then even in the new and wrong spelling, not in the old an true one. How can I disable this?

• Timeouts when connecting to SQL Server since installing SP1 for Windows 7

  Hi, I just installed SP1 for windows 7 and I have severe performance degradation when connecting to SQL Server 2005 since then. Establishing connection takes more than 30 seconds while it's instantaneous on another computer. Firewall is disabled and I didn't make any change to the configuration. It happens both when trying to connect with a hostname and with an ip address. Everything else seems to be fine (for instance, I'm have no issue connecting to other computers with remote desktop) What can cause such a problem? Thanks in advance! Edit : uninstalling the SP1 solves the issue instantly.

• emacs and putty on windows 7

  My workstation was recently updated to Windows 7. I've downloaded putty and have configured it to the same settings I had under Vista. Whenever I ssh to a vm running Centos 5.4 and try to run emacs on a file, I'm getting an error about a connection to an X server: [ecto1 ~]$ emacs foo.bar Connection lost to X server `localhost:10.0' I never received this error message when I had Vista. I can get around it by aliasing emacs to 'emacs -nw', but I don't feel that I should have to do this. My co-worker has the same hardware that had the same upgrade and his sessions do not seem to be doing this. Any advice? I can't find anything on google and don't know where else to start.   We need to build out a server running Windows 2008 R2 Standard that can allow up to 10 simultaneous RDP/Terminal Services connections and I'm a little confused about how the CAL licenses work. From one source I was told I needed 10 "server CALs" and an additional 10 "RDP CALs" (total of 20 CALs). From another, I was told I just needed the 10 "RDP CALs", which implicitly came with the server CAL. The Microsoft licensing website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-rds.aspx) seems to support scenario #1, but it is still not real clear what those server CALs are needed for. Also, can we use the 2 "built-in" RDP clients, meaning we only need to purchase 8 CALs to reach a total of 10?

• Windows 2008 VPS always crashes when out of disk space

  Hello, I am renting a Windows server 2008 dc SP2 VPS for hosting my Asp.Net projects. Now for the second time this month my VPS ran out of disk space. The first time it was a log file that got to big and yesterday it was my mistake for uploading a website without noticing the lack of space on my VPS. Now the side effect this has is that my VPS corrupts some files when trying to write them. Last time it was Plesk that stopped working yesterday it was IIS. So I was wondering is this normal behavior? I called my service provider to ask if they could restore a back-up and to ask if this is normal and they ensured me it was. I am not trying to blame them and I know it's mostly my fault for not monitoring my VPS better or for not setting better defaults.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS Server not working?

  I have a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 hosting a DNS server, exchange 2010 and is a domain controller. One computer on the network (and domain) can ping the server 25% of the time, also when I try to ping it's own hostname it also does not work. However another computer that is on the domain can ping it fine, and another computer on the network but not domain can ping fine as well. The computer that cannot ping the server is setup to use the DNS server running on the server only (secondary dns points to nothing) and it will resolve the hostname of the server to the external IP not internal when the other two computers correctly resolve the internal All 3 computers and server are connected directly into the same switch. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks

  I'm using wbadmin to schedule image backup every night on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server. Ever since installing MS-SQL 2008 Express R2, wbadmin wants to also backup the volume where the MS-SQL data files are located (L:). I'm using -allCritical to make sure bare metal restore will work. command-line: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\myserver\backup$\myserver\%DATE% -include:C: -allCritical -quiet I don't want to do this, because I'm backing up MS-SQL manually elsewhere. It worked just fine only taking C: before I installed MS-SQL.

• Windows 7 Bootcamp to see data doubler SATA SSD in Optical Bay Connector

  Hi I purchased a OWC data doubler http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/ ... Long story short it lets you add a second HD to your macbook pro in place of the cd/dvd drive (which is useless anyway, impossible to get stuff out when stuck). My current setup is 600gb intel SSD bootdrive 100gb partition for OSX / 500gb for Windows 7 Prof from Bootcamp (use 99 % of time). My desire is to have a second 300gb SSD to run disk intensive VM's off of. So I added a second 300gb intel SSD (again, NO desire to boot off of) on the sata optical port. I can see the drive no problem if I boot in to OSX, however, can't see it in disk management on Win7 ??? Any ideas similar experience ... Funny thing is I can see it in "Device Manager Disk Drivers" but not Disk Management ??? Also no I don't want to use Fusion/Parallels this is a waste of resources for me.
