• Windows 7 KSOD On Login

  For those that are unaware, KSOD means blacK Screen of Death. Essentially, when windows starts my computer shows only the cursor and a black screen. It seems like any and all shell elements are disabled (or perhaps not started). I have seen a number of these questions asked, none of which have matched my situation. CTRL + ALT + ... does not respond Restarting in safe mode, results in the same KSOD sfc /scannow seems to have no effect when typed at the command prompt that is accessed using the recovery tools via the install disk Update to item 3: sfc /scannow reports: There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again. However, Windows does not restart past KSOD. Update to item 3 as per Soandos comment re: /offbootdir sfc /scannow /offbotdir=e:\ /windir=e:\windows "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log..."

• How to upgrade ClamAV on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS?

  I'm running a server on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, and when I installed ClamAV via aptitude, it installed version 0.94. That version has now been EOL'ed, but when I run "aptitude upgrade", it doesn't update ClamAV to the more recent version (0.96). I then followed these instructions on Installing ClamAV from the PPA, but when I did that, I get a message saying "The following packages have been kept back: ... clamav clamav-base clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam ..." Does anyone know how to get Ubuntu 8.04 to do this update via aptitude or apt-get (I'm hoping to avoid having to compile from source, etc.)?

URL of Team Project Collection. /teamproject Required. Specifies the name of the team project. /processtemplate Required. Specifies that name of the process template. /webapplication The name of the SharePoint Web Application. Must also specify relativepath. /relativepath The path for the site relative to the root URL for the SharePoint Web Application. Must also specify webapplication. /validate Specifies that the user inputs are to be validated. If specified, only validation will be done and no portal setting will be changed. /verbose Switches on the verbose mode. I created a new Team Project in TFS 2010 Beta 1 and choose not to configure SharePoint during the creation of the Team Project. Of course I found out fairly quickly that a portal for TFS is very useful, especially the Iteration and the Product backlog workbooks and the dashboard reports. This blog describes how you can configure the sharepoint portal afterwards. Update: September 9th, 2009 Adding the portal afterwards is much easier as described below. Here are the steps Step 1: Create a new temporary project (with a SharePoint site for it). Open the Team Explorer Right click in the Team Explorer the root node (i.e. the project collection) Select "New team project" from the menu Walk throught he wizard and make sure you check the option to create the portal (which is by default checked) Step 2: Disable the site for the new project Open the Team Explorer Select the team project you created in step 1 In the menu click on Team -> Show Project Portal. In the menu click on Team -> Team Project Settings -> Portal Settings... The following dialog pops up Uncheck the option "Enable team project portal" Confirm the dialog with OK Step 3: Enable the site for the original one. Point it to the newly created site. Open the Team Explorer Select the team project you want to add the portal to In the menu open Team -> Team Project Settings -> Portal Settings... The same dialog as in step 2 pops up Check the option "Enable team project portal" Click on the "Configure URL" button The following dialog pops up   In the dialog select in the combobox of the web application the TFS server Enter in the Relative site path the text "sites/[Project Collection Name]/[Team Project Name created in step 1]" Confirm the "Specify an existing SharePoint Site" with OK Check the "Reports and dashboards refer to data for this team project" option Confirm the dialog "Project Portal Settings" with OK Step 4: Delete the temporary project you created. In Beta 1, I have found no way to delete a team project. Maybe it will be available in TFS 2010 Beta 2. Original post Step 1: Create new portal site Go to the sharepoint site of your project collection (/sites//default.aspx">/sites//default.aspx">http://<servername>/sites/<project_collection_name>/default.aspx) Click on the Site Actions at the left side of the screen and choose the option Site Settings In the site settings, choose the Sites and workspaces option Create a new site Enter the values for the Title, the description, the site address. And choose for the TFS2010 Agile Dashboard as template. Create the site, by clicking on the Create button Step 2: Integrate portal site with team project Open Visual Studio Open the Team Explorer (View -> Team Explorer) Select in the Team Explorer tool window the Team Project for which you are create a new portal Open the Project Portal Settings (Team -> Team Project Settings -> Portal Setings...) Check the Enable team project portal checkbox Click on Configure URL... You will get a new dialog as below Enter the url to the TFS server in the web application combobox And specify the relative site path: sites/<project collection>/<site name> Confirm with OK Check in the Project Portal Settings dialog the checkbox "Reports and dashboards refer to data for this team project" Confirm the settings with OK (this takes a while...) When you now browse to the portal, you will see that the dashboards are now showing up with the data for the current team project. Step 3: Download process template To get a copy of the documents that are default in a team project, we need to have a fresh set of files that are not attached to a team project yet. You can do that with the following steps. Start the Process Template Manager (Team -> Team Project Collection Settings -> Process Template Manager...) Choose the Agile process template and click on download Choose a folder to download Step 4: Add Product and Iteration backlog Go to the Team Explorer in Visual Studio Make sure the team project is in the list of team projects, and expand the team project Right click the Documents node, and choose New Document Library Enter "Shared Documents", and click on Add Right click the Shared Documents node and choose Upload Document Go the the file location where you stored the process template from step 3 and then navigate to the subdirectory "Agile Process Template 5.0\MSF for Agile Software Development v5.0\Windows SharePoint Services\Shared Documents\Project Management" Select in the Open Dialog the files "Iteration Backlog" and "Product Backlog", and click Open Step 5: Bind Iteration backlog workbook to the team project Right click on the "Iteration Backlog" file and select Edit, and confirm any warning messages Place your cursor in cell A1 of the Iteration backlog worksheet Switch to the Team ribbon and click New List. Select your Team Project and click Connect From the New List dialog, select the Iteration Backlog query in the Workbook Queries folder. The final step is to add a set of document properties that allow the workbook to communicate with the TFS reporting warehouse. Before we create the properties we need to collect some information about your project. The first piece of information comes from the table created in the previous step.  As you collect these properties, copy them into notepad so they can be used in later steps. Property How to retrieve the value? [Table name] Switch to the Design ribbon and select the Table Name value in the Properties portion of the ribbon [Project GUID] In the Visual Studio Team Explorer, right click your Team Project and select Properties.  Select the URL value and copy the GUID (long value with lots of characters) at the end of the URL [Team Project name] In the Properties dialog, select the Name field and copy the value [TFS server name] In the Properties dialog, select the Server Name field and copy the value [UPDATE] I have found that this is not correct: you need to specify the instance of your SQL Server. The value is used to create a connection to the TFS cube. Switch back to the Iteration Backlog workbook. Click the Office button and select Prepare – Properties. Click the Document Properties – Server drop down and select Advanced Properties. Switch to the Custom tab and add the following properties using the values you collected above. Variable name Value [Table name]_ASServerName [TFS server name] [Table name]_ASDatabase tfs_warehouse [Table name]_TeamProjectName [Team Project name] [Table name]_TeamProjectId [Project GUID] Click OK to close the properties dialog. It is possible that the Estimated Work (Hours) is showing the #REF! value. To resolve that change the formula with: =SUMIFS([Table name][Original Estimate]; [Table name][Iteration Path];CurrentIteration&"*";[Table name][Area Path];AreaPath&"*";[Table name][Work Item Type]; "Task") For example =SUMIFS(VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Original Estimate]; VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Iteration Path];CurrentIteration&"*";VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Area Path];AreaPath&"*";VSTS_ab392b55_6647_439a_bae4_8c66e908bc0d[Work Item Type]; "Task") Also the Total Remaining Work in the Individual Capacity table may contain #REF! values. Step 6: Bind Product backlog workbook to the team project Repeat the steps for binding the Iteration backlog for thiw workbook too.   I use Ubuntu 12.10 and I tried to follow this guide Install android sdk and eclipse in Ubuntu 12.04 but I keep getting this error: Error: The AVD manager normally uses the user's profile directory to store AVD files. However it failed to find the default profile directory. To fix this, please set the environment variable ANDROID_SDK_HOME to a valid path such as ¨~¨. Any ideas how can I fix this?

  Opera has just released the first stable version of their revamped browser and will be proceeding at a rapid pace going forward. There is also news concerning the three development streams they will maintain along with news of an update for the older 12.x series for those who are not ready to update to 15.x just yet. The day is full of good news for Opera users whether they have already switched to the new Blink/Webkit Engine version or are still using the older Presto Engine version. First, news of the new development streams… Opera has released details outlining their three new release streams: Opera (Stable) – Released every couple of weeks, this is the most solid version, ready for mission-critical daily use. Opera Next – Updated more frequently than Stable, this is the feature-complete candidate for the Stable version. While it should be ready for daily use, you can expect some bugs there. Opera Developer – A bleeding edge version, you can expect a lot of fancy stuff there; however, some nasty bugs might also appear from time to time. From the Opera Desktop Team blog post: When you install Opera from a particular stream, your installation will stick to it, so Opera Stable will be always updated to Opera Stable, Opera Next to Opera Next and so on. You can choose for yourself which stream is the best for you. You can even follow a couple of them at the same time! Of particular interest is the announcement of continued development for the 12.x series. A new version (12.16) is due to be released soon to help keep the older series up to date and secure while the transition process from 12.x to 15.x continues.

Write down a Name for the virtual Machine a proceed to select a Operating System and Version. (In this case it is a Linux (Oracle Enterprise Linux or RedHat)Click Next5. Select the memory amount base for the Virtual Machine (Minimal 1280 for our case) - Click Next6. Select the Disk 11GR2_OEL5_32GB.vdi it was added in the virtual media manager in the step 2. Dont forget let selected Boot hard Disk (Primary Master) . Given it is the only disk assigned to the virtual machine.Click Next7. Click Finish8. This step is important. Once you have click on the settings Button.9. On General option click the advanced settings. Here you must change the default directory to save your Snapshots; my recommendation set it to the same directory where the .Vdi file is. Otherwise you can have the same Virtual Machine and its snapshots in different paths.10. Now Click on System, and proceed to assign the correct memory (If you did not before) Note: Enable "Enable IO APIC" if you are planning to assign more than one CPU to the Virtual Machine.Define the processors for the Virtual machine. If you processor is dual core choose 211. Select the video memory amount you want to assign to the Virtual Machine 12. Associated more storage disk to the Virtual machine, if you have more VDI files. (Not our case)The disk must be selected as IDE Primary Master. 13. Well you can verify the other options, but with these changes you will be able to start the VM.Note: Sometime the VM owner may share some instructions, if so follow his instructions.14. Finally Start the Virtual Machine (Click > Start)

• xvidcap: Error accessing sound input from /dev/dsp

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm trying xvidcap to record a screencast with audio from the microphone, however it can't record any sound: $ xvidcap --file appo.avi --cap_geometry 700x500-0+0 Error accessing sound input from /dev/dsp Sound disabled! Sure enough /dev/dsp doesn't even exist: $ sudo ls -lh /dev/dsp ls: cannot access /dev/dsp: No such file or directory I found a blog post about fixing xvidcap sound input, however if I try the suggestion I get: $ sudo modprobe snd-pcm-oss FATAL: Module snd_pcm_oss not found. So the question is, how can I create /dev/dsp? The problem behind the problem is: how can I record sound from the microphone with xvidcap? So workarounds are welcome too. UPDATE: I've followed the suggestion of James, and something has improved. The error accessing /dev/dsp is gone, however now I get: [oss @ 0x8e0c120] Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccurate xtoffmpeg.c add_audio_stream(): Can't initialize fifo for audio recording Now when I record xvidcap appears in the recording tab of pavucontrol and I can choose Audio stream from Internal Audio Analog Stereo or Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo, I tried both just in case, but the video is still mute. UPDATE 2: I found that "Monitor of" is the one to record application sounds, while for microphone, I should choose "Internal Audio Analog Stereo". To rule out other problems, such as with the microphone, I tried with gnome-sound-recorder and it works. Actually I jumped on my chair, since the volume was too high! :-)

• Cannot run setups from a vboxsvr mapped network drive on Windows within VirtualBox

  I'm trying to run an application setup by double-clicking the setup.exe from within Windows Explorer. The file is located on a mapped network drive, and I'm using Windows 7. This results in the following error message: The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again. The workaround I found is to copy the installer to the main hard drive (c:) and run it from there; however, this is rather inconvenient. I have the impression that the problem only occurs with installers, as everything seemed to work fine with regular exe's. Is there anyone who can explain this odd behavior? Update: After some extended tests I noticed that the problem only occurs with a mapped drive of VirtualBox's "shared folders" (cf. vboxsvr; VirtualBox v3.1.4). Mapping an SMB drive works fine. Update: The same problem occurs on Windows Vista.

  After searching in my start menu and clicking to "see more results", I got an error dialog: It "seems" that it should be search-ms:query=document an not search:query=document but where can I fix this? Additional info: New user account don't have the problem. Windows 7 Ultimate - RTM Disabling/Enabling again "Windows Search" (in Start Control Panel Programs Turn Windows Features on or off) doesn't fix it. (There's a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Search in my registry that's not there normally.) - outdated see comments... • High CPU usage with Team Speak 3.0.0-rc2

  The CPU usage is always around 40 percent. I use push-to-talk and I had uninstalled pulseaudio. Now I use Alsa. I don't even have to connect to a Server. By simply starting TS the cpu usage goes up 40 percent and stays there. The CPU usage of 3.0.0-rc1 [Build: 14468] is constantly 14 percent. UPDATE: Thanks to nickguletskii's link I googled for "alsa cpu usage" (without quotes) and it brought me to a forum. A user wrote that by directly selecting the hardware with "plughw:x.x" won't impact the performance of the system. I have selected it in the TS 3 configuration and it worked. But this solution is not optimal because now no other program can access the sound output. If you need any further information or my question is unclear than please tell me.

• Problem installing the latest eclipse IDE

  I'm running ubuntu 11.04. I'm trying to install the latest "eclipse for java developers" IDE (version Indigo 3.7.1). I have downloaded and extracted it. I attempt to run it by changing to the extracted folder and executing ./eclipse This produces the following errors in the terminal: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiobamf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiobamf.so /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so And then a dialog opens with this error message: JVM terminated. • Windows Updates Fails Server 2008 0x80070490

  I have a server with Windows Server 2008 Standard x64 Edition installed. This has been installed and running for several months and I have been able to successfully install previous Windows Updates. I have two pending updates that fail to install. (KB967723) Security update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB976098) Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition Fails with Error code: 80070490 Followed this off Microsoft support site, which basically says to repair Windows with the install DVD. When I get to the step to select upgrade I get the following error. Upgrade has been disabled. The upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of windows that is more recent then the version you are currently running. So basically feel like I've hit a dead end with out doing a complete reinstall. Any ideas ?

  I use Ubuntu 12.10 and I tried to follow this guide Install android sdk and eclipse in Ubuntu 12.04 but I keep getting this error: Error: The AVD manager normally uses the user's profile directory to store AVD files. However it failed to find the default profile directory. To fix this, please set the environment variable ANDROID_SDK_HOME to a valid path such as ¨~¨. Any ideas how can I fix this?
