• early audio offset in Audacity and VLC, but not Banshee

  I'm editing audio files with speech in Audacity, marking particular types of speech. I just noticed that files edited in Windows have different intervals marked than files edited in Ubuntu. After testing and confirming this error, it seems that the audio playback in Ubuntu clips the sound too early from the end (early offset), which causes the person doing the editing to mark the interval wrongly. Interestingly, the error appears in Audacity and VLC (which I sometimes use for playback), but NOT Banshee. Since both Audacity and VLC have this problem, I assume it is not application-specific. I don't know why Banshee handles this without problem though... Are there any ALSA or Pulseaudio settings that are likely to cause this problem (I know very little about either)? The task itself does not appear to consume large amounts of resources, but I am on an old laptop, so here are my specs: Ubuntu 11.10. Dell XPS m1210 1.6 GHz Intel Core, 2 x 512 Mb 667 MHz RAM, Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01). • What deployment framework to use?

  We are trying to figure out what deployment method/framework to use with a python application, it has a basic wsgi server to make some REST resources available and a set of static web pages with the interface that are served through apache. The situation is as follows: My team works in isolated parts of the program and sometimes together in specific modules, we have different testing servers and one master server, we all work locally, sync the code using git, and then run a bash script that copies the files from the windows machines to the indicated linux server(using ssh) and then restarts the app. After thinking about it this doesn't seem to be the right way to do it, the script overwrites all the files in the server with the local files everytime. We want to be able to work in the same server without the worry of overwriting other people's code and we need to deploy to different servers to avoid restarting the service while others work with it and in the near future we need to deploy to the master or several clones of the master server when the application reaches a more mature state. We found serveral options capistrano, kwate, chef or fortress, even fleet but we wanted to have opinions from people that has used them to be sure it is what we need. So this are the main questions: Are these the kind of programs we should be looking at to achive a safe concurrent deployment process? Which one have you used/recommend and why? do you think it would help in our actual situation? Thank you so much for your feedback and advice on this.

• Using json as database with EF, how can I link EF and the json file during DbContext initialization?

  For a personal testing-project I am considering to create a SPA with the following technologies: ASP.NET MVC + EF + WebAPI + AngularJS. The project will make use of small amount of data, so I was thinking I could use just a .json file as storage. But I am not sure about how to proceed with the link between EF and the json file in the initialization of the DbContext. I found a stackoverflow related question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13899342/can-we-use-json-as-a-database I know the basics of edit files and store data inside. What I tried is to get the data from the json file in the initilizer method and create the objects one by one. This is more a doubt about how this works if I save/update an object in the dbcontext, do I need to go through all the elements and add/update it manually? Is it better to rewrite the complete file? According to this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7895335/append-data-to-a-json-file-with-php it is not a good practice to use json/XML for data wich will be manipulated. Anyone has experience with anything similar? Is this a really bad idea and I should use another kind of data-storage?

• Uganda .NET Usergroup April meeting

  Our April meeting was presented by Wilson Kutegeka on the topic of Building the Data Access a layer. In his presentation he showed a tool which he has developed to generate the entities, stores procedures that would be used to reduce having to retype the same boilerplate code for each entity. He uses visual basic samples to demonstrate access to the data from the database and inherits his classes from an abstract class which contains common properties including connection strings, save and delete methods. A number of questions emerged from the group, mostly those that use a business model based approaches. Some of the questions are on unit testing and mocking the models without using the database, the use of IoCs and loose coupled patterns. Some of the questions were on caching, Linq support and data annotations based validation. The presentation details can be found here. • Configuring Transmission for faster download

  I have tested on the same PC with the same torrent/magnet links the following Torrent Clients: Transmission Ktorrent Deluge qBittorrent Vuze After 7 days of testing I noticed that the only one that took longer to start downloading and to keep an optimum/max download speed was Transmission. It was the slowest of them all to download the same torrents or magnet links which I tested 8 torrents and 4 magnet links from different sites and the one that took the most to start downloading or start after a pause/resume event. The other 4 just took less than 2 seconds for example to start downloading and to download the same content between 50% less time to 80% less time. I think that Transmission has the same capabilities about downloading/resuming than the other torrent clients but it may be because of some configuration I need to do to get the same speed and effect than the others. In my tests all torrent clients were tested with their default configurations. No changes were made. They were tested on the same PC, with the same network connection in the same time periods. So I am thinking that Transmission just needs a little bit of configuration tunning. I also set the ports for use to the same one for each. Checked the router for any blocking and anything related to the network. What options can I change to make it so Transmission resumes a download faster (grabs the seeds faster) and keeps a fast download all the time (Stays with the seeds that offer the best connection for example). Both of which by the look of it are features that the rest of the torrent clients do already.

• Is there a visual web application builder or rapid webapp prototyping framework?

  Question: Is there such a thing as a self-hosted framework or CMS especially tailored towards the creation of interactive web applications without -- or with an absolute minimum of -- programming? (Substantially less programming than say a simple Rails app or a plugin for Wordpress, Joomla etc would require.) As for desired features I'd settle for whatever is available, but some ideas could be: A User authentication and Permissions system. A GUI-driven input form builder. A GUI-driven template / visual site design builder. A simple scripting language (think AppleScript-like simplicity) A highly modular architecture, with high-level business objects (users, forms data, etc) exposed for easy re-use. If something like the above doesn't exist, then what comes near this? Need: This is for self-hosted rapid prototyping of web applications, and limited user testing of webapp user interface designs in a closed user test. Notes: I know about Ruby on Rails (Rails), Django, Pyramid etc. I'm looking for something much faster to work in, for making prototypes. I know about CMS's in general but find that most of them are tailored towards displaying information to the end users. If there is an exceptionally easy-to-master CMS with easy scripting (lets say much more so than for example Wordpress) then I'd be interested.

• A question about the cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script

  I have been testing the latest cobbler for PXE booting Ubuntu 12.04.1-server-x86_64 and 12.10-server-x86_64 using a Scentific Linux 6.3 host to run the cobbler server. With the former, I got everything going. But with the later, I haven't been successful. As an attempt to figure things out, I downloaded Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 source package. Examining the content, I soon noticed that Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 came with a cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script. I reviewed the code and spotted something interesting: line 9 of the script states: 9 AUTO_KOPTS='log_host=@@server@@ log_port=514 priority=critical locale=en_US netcfg/choose_interface=auto' But after extensive googling, reading both Debian and Ubuntu's documentation about the debian-installer, I don't see these two kopts log_host and log_port documented anywhere. Putting it in the profile of my current test setup, even my cobbler server host does run rsyslogd, I don't see anything logged either. No, I don't have iptables and selinux on on the cobbler server host. Can anyone point to me where I can read more about these two options? Having the ability to log an installation to a remote central logging host would be really cool.

• Do you know the minimum builds to create on any branch?

  You should always have three builds on your team project. These should be setup and tested using an empty solution before you write any code at all. Figure: Three builds named in the format [TeamProject].[AreaPath]_[Branch].[Gate|CI|Nightly] for every branch.   These builds should use the same XAML build workflow; however you may set them up to run a different set of tests depending on the time it takes to run a full build. Gate – Only needs to run the smallest set of tests, but should run most if not all of the Unit Test. This is run before developers are allowed to check-in CI – This should run all Unit Tests and all of the automated UI tests. It is run after a developer check-in. Nightly – The Nightly build should run all of the Unit Tests, all of the Automated UI tests and all of the Load and Performance tests. The nightly build is time consuming and will run but once a night. Packaging of your Product for testing the next day may be done at this stage as well. Figure: You can control what tests are run and what data is collected while they are running. Note: We do not run all the tests every time because of the time consuming nature of running some tests, but ALL tests should be run overnight.   Today, I had a hard time unit testing a function to make sure a Method with some array parameters was called. Method to be called : void AddUsersToRoles(string[] usernames, string[] roleNames);   I had previously used Arg<T>.Matches on complex types in other unit tests, but for some reason I was unable to find out how to apply the same logic with an array of strings.   It is actually quite simple to do, T really is a string[], so we use Arg<string[]>. • PHP rand function (or not so rand)

  I was testing PHP rand function to write on a image. Of course the output shows that it's not so random. When I change the variable to 513 for an example, it is so much harder for human eye to detect it. Why is that? • Odd Android touch event problem

  Overview When testing my game I came across a bizarre problem with my touch controls. Note this isn't related to multi-touch as I completely removed my ACTION_POINTER_UP and ACTION_POINTER_DOWN along with my ACTION_MOVE code. So I'm simply working with ACTION_UP and ACTION_DOWN now and still get the problem. The problem I have a left and right button on the left of the screen and a jump button on the right. Everything works as it should but if I touch a large area of my hand (the fleshy part at the base of the thumb for instance) onto the screen, then release it and then press one of my arrows, the sprite moves in that direction for a few seconds, and then ACTION_UP is mysteriously triggered. The sprite stops and then if I release my finger and re-apply it to an arrow, the same thing happens. This goes on and on and eventually (randomly??) stops and everything work OK again. • How do you cope with change in open source frameworks that you use for your projects?

  It may be a personal quirk of mine, but I like keeping code in living projects up to date - including the libraries/frameworks that they use. Part of it is that I believe a web app is more secure if it is fully patched and up to date. Part of it is just a touch of obsessive compulsiveness on my part. Over the past seven months, we have done a major rewrite of our software. We dropped the Xaraya framework, which was slow and essentially dead as a product, and converted to Cake PHP. (We chose Cake because it gave us the chance to do a very rapid rewrite of our software, and enough of a performance boost over Xaraya to make it worth our while.) We implemented unit testing with SimpleTest, and followed all the file and database naming conventions, etc. Cake is now being updated to 2.0. And, there doesn't seem to be a viable migration path for an upgrade. The naming conventions for files have radically changed, and they dropped SimpleTest in favor of PHPUnit. This is pretty much going to force us to stay on the 1.3 branch because, unless there is some sort of conversion tool, it's not going to be possible to update Cake and then gradually improve our legacy code to reap the benefits of the new Cake framework. So, as usual, we are going to end up with an old framework in our Subversion repository and just patch it ourselves as needed. And this is what gets me every time. So many open source products don't make it easy enough to keep projects based on them up to date. When the devs start playing with a new shiny toy, a few critical patches will be done to older branches, but most of their focus is going to be on the new code base. How do you deal with radical changes in the open source projects that you use? And, if you are developing an open source product, do you keep upgrade paths in mind when you develop new versions?

• Graduated transition from Green - Yellow - Red

  I have am having algorithm mental block in designing a way to transition from Green to Red, as smoothly as possible with a, potentially, unknown length of time to transition. For testing purposes, i will be using 300 as my model timespan but the methodology algorithm design needs to be flexible enough to account for larger or even smaller timespans. Figured using RGB would probably be the best to transition with, but open to other color creation types, assuming its native to .Net (VB/C#). Currently i have: t = 300 x = t/2 z = 0 low = Green (0, 255, 0) mid = Yellow (255, 255, 0) high = Red (255, 0, 0) Lastly, sort of an optional piece, is to account for the possibility of the low, mid, and high color's to be flexible as well. I assume that there would need to be a check to make sure that someone isnt putting in low = (255,0,0), mid=(254,0,0), and high=(253,0,0). Outside of this anomaly, which i will handle myself based on the best approach to evaluate a color. Question: What would be the best approach to do the transition from low to mid and then from mid to high? What would be some potential pitfalls of implementing this type of design, if any?

• Efficient mapping layout in 2D side-scroller, and collisions between character and the world

  I haven't touched Visual Studio for a couple months now, but I was playing a game from the '90s toady and had an epiphany: I was looking for something what i didn't need, and I wasn't using what I knew correctly. One of those realizations was collision, so let me tell you a bit about my project that I was working on. The project's graphics looks like Mario or Dangerous Dave, etc., you get the idea - old-school pixels. So anyway I remember trying to think of something else than AABB for character form, but I couldn't think of anything. Perhaps I could get a suggestion for this? Another thing is the world - I don't want it to be just linear world, I want mountains, etc.. My idea is to use triangles, and no idea yet what to do if I want just part of the cube, say 3/4 or 2/4 or whatever. Hard-coding such things seems inefficient. P.S. I am not looking at the precision level offered by Box2D. Actually I remember trying to implement it at first, but I failed as my understanding of C++ wasn't advanced enough, as it'll be mentioned below. P.P.S. I am programming in C++, and I haven't done it for a couple months now. I have no means of testing it either, as my PC is broken down, and this one can barely run games from late '90s, not to speak about a compiler or a program with inefficient resource management... I am also not an expert (obviously), I don't even know if I can consider myself an average programmer. In short, I am simply curious about my thoughts and my past experience when programming the game. I may come back to it when my PC is fixed, I'm already filling a note about these things.

• Questioning the motivation for dependency injection: Why is creating an object graph hard?

  Dependency injection frameworks like Google Guice give the following motivation for their usage (source): To construct an object, you first build its dependencies. But to build each dependency, you need its dependencies, and so on. So when you build an object, you really need to build an object graph. Building object graphs by hand is labour intensive (...) and makes testing difficult. But I don't buy this argument: Even without dependency injection, I can write classes which are both easy to instantiate and convenient to test.
