• The Year 2010, The Year of Change

  As I look back on the year of 2010, I could have never predicted the wonderful changes that have occurred for my wife and me. The beginning of this year started out as the 9th year that we lived in South Florida, and my fourth year working for DentalPlans.com as a software engineer/network admin. About 3 months in to the year I was given an excellent opportunity to work for MovieTickets.com in the software engineering department. This opportunity allowed me to gain experience with jQuery due to one of my projects was to reengineering MovieTickets.com existing Marketing Panel System. About 3 months after working at MovieTickets.com, my wife and I were offered an opportunity of a life time. I was offered a Job in a large background\information security company located in Nashville, TN as software engineer II.  I must note that after living in South Florida for 9 years, my wife and I really had a strong distaste for the South Florida life style and the general attitude/culture of the area. Even though we shared a strong dislike for the area in which we lived I must admit that it was a tough decision to leave MovieTickets.com because I was really doing well and I made some great new friends like Chris Catto, and Tyson Nero.  In fact, they introduced me to Local Microsoft User Groups, and software development podcast like DotNetRocks.com and Hanselminutes.com.  In addition, we also went to my first Microsoft launch down in Miami for Visual Studios 2010. I must admit it was a cool experience.  I truly hope to keep in touch with them to see how their careers grow, and I know they will. I must admit I was nervous and excited to start the next chapter in our live as I started up the 26 foot U-Haul truck and got on the road for Nashville from Boca Raton. I knew that the change was going to lead to new adventures and new opportunities that I could never imagine.  As we pulled in to the long driveway of our rental house, we knew that this was the right place for my wife and I. Natalie, my wife had actually come up to Nashville and within one week of my job offer had set up a nice rental home for us to restart our lives in TN.  I must admit that the wonderful southern hospitality took a bit to get use to due to the type of people we were used to dealing with on a regular basis. Our first 2 months seemed like we were living a dream because of our new area and the wonderful people we live around. So far my new job is going really well and I really like the people on my team and department. In fact after 6 months I am now in charge of all application builds for our new deployment process. I am also leading up a push for setting up of continuous integration within our new build process.  In addition to starting my new job, I was also offered a position as an adjust instructor at ITT Tech teaching course like VB.net, Java Script, Ajax, and database development. So far I have really like teaching at the college level.  Information technology has really been great for my life so I am really glad to be able to give back. That is actually why I started DotNetBlocks. This site allows me to document things I have learned as I work with technology, and allows others to borrow from my experiences.  I hope that this site can help others as others have helped me get where I am. Finally, I am glade to report that I only have 4 classes left for my master’s degree at Capella University. I am proud to announce that I am still on track to graduate with 3.91 GPA.  This last class was really a test because I had a crazy idea that I could work full time as a software engineer, teach two college courses as a first time teacher and also take an advanced masters class in application architecture. I have no idea how I actually survived, but I am really surprised how well I actually did. I was invited back to reach again at ITT Tech, and I passed my masters class with an “A”.  I have decided to take this next term off from my master’s program so that I do not get burned out.  Also, so that my new current employer will pay for more of my education, tuition reimbursement is an awesome benefit. • Ubuntu 12.04.1 completely freezing very often [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What should I do when Ubuntu freezes? I am running ubuntu 12.04.1 on an asus zenbook prime (UX31A), and I am having a problem where the entire OS freezes at random times. It doesn't seem to happen in response to any certain event, it will even sometimes happen while just moving the mouse, not even clicking on anything. The entire system will freeze, mouse and keyboard do not work, and any music/video will freeze and audio will loop. I can do nothing but hold the power button to reboot the computer. I've had this problem for a while, and just yesterday gotten around to backing up everything and doing a fresh install. Lo and behold, I get a freeze within 20 minutes of a fresh install. I've googled this a lot, and cannot find anything that resembles it exactly (some people have everything but mouse/keyboard freeze, some people only have the mouse/keyboard freeze).

• random lags in music when playing on any music player

  guys I have experienced this issue in most of all the music players i tried in ubuntu 12.10. When ever I play a track I experience certain issue, like the track just skipped a second or two. This happens occasionally but at least 4-5 times when ever i play any music track. The actual thing is that the track fast forwards by just 1 or 2 secs and then runs on normal rate. This used to happen during a video, but now it doesn't. But for the music this issue has not stopped. ASRock mootherboard,core2 duo. Also I get ubuntu 12.10 has experienced an internal error(its regarding nautilus). Also the Software Update always gives an internet connection connection error whereas I am able to browse the web and download with ease. Please reply..

Check out the above video to see the steps required to patch, paint, and frame a space on your wall to serve as a projection screen. You’ll need spackle, sandpaper, white paint, and some very basic carpentry skills to complete the simple wood frame for your painted-on screen. If you’d like to create a screen using the same technique but make it removable (for adjustments or to take it with you when you move out) you can just as easily use the paint-it-on technique with a piece of hardboard instead of the drywall.   I recently started on developing in PHP with the Yii Framework. I recently came across the Grails Framework and I'm pretty impressed by the sites they make, bigger companies seem to use Grails for their web development. When looking at yii, not many big companies are using it. I'm just starting out with the Yii framework and I don't want to turn back halfway when in the middle of learning Yii, so I hope someone can give me some comparison about the 2 in terms of power. Does Grails make things much easier and benefit me in the long run? I only have C++ background for now. It boils down to this. I want a powerful framework which will serve me for a very long time and by looking at the number of big companies using Grails, I feel discouraged to take the Yii path. Thank you! • How to get the mic on the Creative X-Mod soundcard working correctly?

  Well, I have this problem for a while now. When my computer start the mic seem to work but it's like it's muted. I have to go to a terminal and type alsamixer -c 1 and then I set up PCM Capture Source on Line and set up it back to Mic to get the mic actually working. Is there is a way to do this automatically or to solve the problem. I use a special workaround on this card because of the bug #429642. My workaround is having this at the end of my /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/profile-sets/default.conf : [Mapping xmod-stereo-out] device-strings = surround51:%f description = Analog Stereo Creative Xmod channel-map = front-left,front-right paths-output = analog-output analog-output-headphones analog-output-mono analog-output-lfe-on-mono paths-input = analog-input analog-input-mic analog-input-linein analog-input-aux analog-input-video analog-input-tvtuner analog-input-fm analog-input-mic-line priority = 10 Maybe the bug come from here, maybe I have to change something. • Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel and Emulex HBA Eliminate Silent Data Corruption

  Yesterday, Emulex announced that it has added support for T10 Protection Information (T10-PI), formerly called T10-DIF, to a number of its HBAs. When used with Oracle's Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, this will prevent silent data corruption and help ensure the integrity and regulatory compliance of user data as it is transferred from the application to the SAN From the press release: Traditionally, protecting the integrity of customers' data has been done with multiple discrete solutions, including Error Correcting Code (ECC) and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC), but there have been coverage gaps across the I/O path from the operating system to the storage. The implementation of the T10-PI standard via Emulex's BlockGuard feature, in conjunction with other industry player's implementations, ensures that data is validated as it moves through the data path, from the application, to the HBA, to storage, enabling seamless end-to-end integrity. • Ubuntu on the Sony Vaio VPCY 21S1E

  My girlfriend got a new Subnotebook for Christmas (Sony Vayo VPCY21S1E), which comes with an "Intel HD graphics" vga adaptor. When I try to boot the Ubuntu installer from USB, the screen goes blank after a short while, before I even see the Ubuntu logo. However, when I select "nomodeset" in the boot options, I can boot it to the CLI login prompt. When I start X, though, that only works in VESA mode (I've read Intel eventually got rid of Usermode Mode Setting and only offers KMS now, which I've disabled to get it to boot). What can I do to enable a) higher resolution than 1024x768 in VESA b) hardware acceleration for compiz, video playback, etc?

• Youtube videos suddenly all report "Invalid parameters" and won't play

  Running 11.10, with up-to-date Flash (11.1.102.55, which the Flash site agrees is the up-to-date version). Every Youtube video reports a blank screen with the words, "Invalid parameters": I've tried fiddling with the player "hardware acceleration" setting, and that has no effect. Similarly, I've clicked and un-clicked and re-clicked the "storage" options in the global settings thing, also to no effect. I haven't seen this in any google searches (though there are other problems described involved the "Invalid parameters" message) which makes me think it's a recent phenomenon. edit — hmm, fails in Firefox but works in Chrome ...

• Upgrading to latest stable Mono

  Mono 2.8 was recently released boasting a couple of large performance improvements. It's far too late for it to make it into Maverick and I'm fairly inpatient. I don't use Mono for anything mission-critical (just playing music and sorting photos) and if it breaks everything related to Mono, I can probably either live with it or fix it. I'm aware of how much I stand to lose if I mess things up. So with that acknowledged, does anybody here know how to build Mono in a way where it could be dropped in to replace the current Mono (2.6.7)? By this I mean ideally mirroring the packages that Ubuntu uses so that if the worse does happen, I can just downgrade the packages. Or is there a PPA that does all this for me?
