• How to approach people you've found through internet with similar programming interests?

  I've recently really dived into Ruby/Rails and I'm falling in love. I have a gut feeling this might be something that could last for a while. What I've been missing is interaction with people who are as passionate about Ruby, Rails and things closely related to these. I live in a relatively small city, but was able to find five local people through a RoR website. Weekly meetups with Macs, beer and bro-love rushed through my mental theater. Seriously though, I have no clue how I could approach these people. I have their e-mail addresses. Any advice?

• Motion Sensing Fog Machine Increases Savings and Spook Factor

  This DIY add-on switches a standard fog machine from always-on to motion-activated–increase your savings and spook factor at the same time. Courtesy of tinker Greg, this modification involves a new relay and motion sensor mounted onto the existing switch of a store-bought fog machine. When the motion-sensor detects motion the fog machine releases a burst of fog for 5 seconds and then disarms itself for 10 seconds–long enough for the startled victim to move on and for the machine to recharge for the next passerby. • Black screen in installation when Nvidia graphic card plugged

  When I try to install any recent version of Ubuntu, the screen shows some green and purple mess (like analog TVs when thers no signal). Then, a black screen. I guess it keeps booting in live/install mode. But I can't see it. I tried installing from CD and USB, I tryed changing some BIOS settings... I installed older versions, like 8.04, and it worked, but after updating the system, it crashes again. That's why I discovered that upgrading Nvidia drivers, made system show a black screen again. After that, I unplugged the Nvidia card and installed 12.04 with onboard card. It worked perfectly. Then, I plugged Nvidia again and system booted, but only showing that black screen again. I keep working with onboard card, so far... The nVidia is a GeForce 8500GT.

• Monitoring Events in your BPEL Runtime - RSS Feeds?

  @10g - It had been a while since I'd tried something different. so here's what I did this week!Whenever our Developers deployed processes to the BPEL runtime, or perhaps when a process gets turned off due to connectivity issues, or maybe someone retired a process, I needed to know. So here's what I did. Step 1: Downloaded Quartz libraries and went through the documentation to understand what it takes to schedule a recurring job. Step 2: Cranked out two components using Oracle JDeveloper. [Within a new Web Project] a) A simple Java Class named FeedUpdater that extends org.quartz.Job. All this class does is to connect to your BPEL Runtime [via opmn:ormi] and fetch all events that occured in the last "n" minutes. events? - If it doesn't ring a bell - its right there on the BPEL Console. It is very straight forward. It will make this look much simpler.   Now that both components were ready, I packaged the Application into a war file and deployed it onto my Application Server. When the servlet initialized, the "n" second schedule was set/initialized. From then on, the servlet kept populating the RSS Feed file. I just ensured that my "Job" code keeps only 30 latest events within it, so that the feed file is small and under control. [a few kbs]   Next I opened up the feed xml on my browser - It requested a subscription - and Here I was - watching new deployments/life cycle events all popping up on my browser toolbar every 5 (actually n)  minutes!   Well, you could do it on a browser/reader of your choice - or perhaps read them like you read an email on your thunderbird!.

• What technologies are used for Game development now days?

  Whenever I ask a question about game development in an online forum I always get suggestions like learning line drawing algorithms, bit level image manipulation and video decompression etc. However looking at games like God of War 3, I find it hard to believe that these games could be developed using such low level techniques. The sheer awesomeness of such games defy any comprehensible(for me) programming methodology. Besides the gaming hardware is really a monster now days. So it stands to reason that the developers would work at a higher level of abstraction. What is the latest development methodology in the gaming industry? How is it that a team of 30-35 developers (of which most is management and marketing fluff) able to make such mind boggling games? If the question seems too general could you explain the architecture of God of War 3? Or how you would go about producing a clone? That I think should be objectively answerable.

Only clue I have is that I initially was having problems, tried using the old method of fixing isights (involving installing isight-firmware-tools) before realizing that I just hadn't turned on the VM setting to allow the VM to access the webcam. :) Anyway, I wonder if installing that messed something up. However, I think this is a red herring because I've: shut down and turned back on the Mac, restarted the VM, tried a different VM (for which I never installed isight-firmware-tools, and created an entirely new ubuntu vm. All instances have had this problem. Similarly, other viewers, such as cheese, avplay, avconv have had all various kinds of errors.

• GParted doesn't see any partition

  What I am trying to do couldn't be more logical I think. I have a 40gb drive with two partitions, Xp and Ubuntu. I have dual boot, everything boots and works perfectly. I have about 9gb free in the Windows partition When I run Gparted I only see 40gb unallocated space, booting from Gparted Live CD. What the hell is going on ? I've read everywhere this is a common problem, however it has no sense something like this remains unsolved by gparted developers, considering what I am trying to do is the very basic step anybody wanting to migrate from Windows to Linux would od Something like this honestly doesn't give anything else than frustration Could anybody on this forum be so kind to explain whats' going on ?   If you ask me what was my Mix10 coup de coeur, I’d have to say Bill Buxton.  I was privileged to spend an hour an a half in a small room with about twelve people and Bill Buxton.  This man has such a incredible background and he is so inspiring.  You could really tell that he is a researcher because as he was talking about something, you could see him thinking about something else and trying at the same time to cross reference that. • What I need to know if I want credit card payments in an ecommerce website

  I live in Costa Rica (central america). I want to build an ecommerce website with credit card payments, I know Asp.NET and SQL Server 2008. I know paypal and the express checkout solution, but many people (and clients) here doesnt like it or dont use it. Paypal and Authorize.Net dont support countries of Latin America, so if you can tell me one company who can or what can I do to setup my shopping cart, im studing right now security and how to implement SSL certificates and encrypt sensible data and PCI compliance in some way. I need this for my own framework in ASP.NET and provide ecommerce solutions here in my country.

• Blue people on flash videos (Youtube, Vimeo, etc...)

  After a recent update I am seeing EVERYONE in any video blue. Only the people are blue. First I was thinking it was an April Fools joke about the song Blue from Eiffel 65 but it has been 4 days already. I tested on another 2 PCs, same problem. It started about a week ago I think. I am using Flash 11.2.202.228 with Firefox 11. The problem is not there if I use Google Chrome. In Chrome the Flash Player is 11.2.31.118

  Microsoft TechEd 2010 - Day 2 @ Bangalore Today is the day 2 @ Microsoft TechEd 2010. We had lot of technical sessions as usual there were many tracks going on side by side and I was attending the Web simplified track, Which comprised of the following sessions :   Developing a scalable Media Application using ASP.NET MVC - This was a kind of little advanced stuff. Anyways I couldn't understand much because this was not my piece of cake and I havent worked on this before ASP.Net MVC Unplugged - This was really great because this session covered from the basics of MVC showing what is Model,View and Controller and how it worked and the speaker went into the details of the same. Building RESTful Applications with the Open Data Protocol - There were some concepts explained about this from the basics on how to build RESTful Services and it went on till some advanced configurations of the same. Developing Scalable Web Applications with AppFabric Caching - This session showed about the integration of AppFabric with the .Net Web Applications. Instead of using Inproc Sessions, we can use this AppFabric as a substitute for Caching and outofProc Session Storage without writing code and doing a little bit of configurations which brings in High Scalability, performance to our applications. (But unfortunately there were no demos for this session ) Deep Dive : WCF RIA Services - This session was also an interactive one, in this the speaker presented from the basics of WCF and took a Book Store Application as a sample and explained all details concepts on linking with RIA Services   Apart from these sessions, in between there happened some small events in the breaks like Some discussions about Technology, Innovations Music Jokes Mimicry, etc. And on doing all these things, the developers were given some kool gifts / goodies like USBs, T-Shirts, etc. And today I got a chance to do the following certification : (70-562) Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist in .NET 3.5 Web Applications Since I already have an MCTS in .NET 2.0, I wanted to do an MCPD and for doing the same I was required to do an update to my MCTS with the .NET 3.5 framework and I did the same I cleared it and now am an MCTS in .NET 3.5 Web Apps And on doing this I got a T-Shirt and they gave something called Learning $ of worth 30$. And in various stalls for attending each quiz or some game or some referrals we got some Learning $ which we can redeem later based on our Total Learning $. I got 105 $ which i was able to redeem and got a Microsoft Learning BagPack, 1 free Microsoft certification offer, a laptop light and an e-learning content activated. And after all these sessions and small events, we had something called Demo Extravaganza like I mentioned yesterday. This was a great funfilled event with lot of goodies for the attendees. There were some lucky draw which enabled 2 attendees to get Netbooks (Sponsored by Intel) and 1 attendee to get X-box (Sponsored by Citrix). After Choosing the raffle in the lucky draw they kept it on a device called Microsoft Surface which is a kind of big touch screen device and on putting the raffle on that it detected the code of the attendee and said intelligently how many sessions that person has attended and if he has attended more than 5 he got a Netbook and this was coded by a guy called Imran. Apart from they showed demos on : Research by 2 Tamilnadu students from Krishna Arts and Science college, taken 1200 photographs of their college from different angles and put that up in Bing maps using silverlight and linked with Photosynth, which showed a 3d view of their college based on the photos they uploaded Reasearch by Microsoft on Panaramic HD views of the images. One young guy from Microsoft Research showed a demo of this on Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, in Tamil Nadu and its history with a panoramic view of the temple and the near by places with narration of the historical information on the same and with the videos embedded in it with high definition images which we can zoom to a very detailed level. Some Demo on a business app with Silverlight, Business Intelligence (BI) and maps integrated. It showed the sales of a particular product across locations. Some kool demos by 2 geeks who used Robots to show their development talents. 2 Robots fought with each other 2 Robots danced in sync for the A.R. Rehman song Humma Humma... A dream home project by Raman. He is currently using the same in his home too. Robots are controlling his home currently. They showed a video on this. Here are the list of activities that Robot does for him When he reads a book, robot automatically scans that and shows that image of that person in the screen (TV or comp) in front of him. It shows a wikipedia about that person. It says that person is not in linked in. do you want to add him If he sees an IPL Match news in the book and smiles it understands he is interested in that and opens a website related to that and shows the current game and the scorecard. It cooks for him It cleans the room for him whenever he leaves the house when he is doing something if some intruder comes inside his house his computer automatically switches his screen showing the video of the person coming inside. • Kernel Panic: line 61: can't open /scripts/functions

  I'm facing a problem with all the kernels installed at my system (Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit). Installed kernel versions: 2.6.32-21 up to 2.6.35.23. The booting halted with the following error: init: .: line 61: can't open '/scripts/functions' Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Pid: 1, comm: init not tainted Only the first one (2.6.32-21) was working up until know. I asked for help at ubuntuforums.org and i was told to check if there's any problem regarding my graphics card (ATI Radeon). I uninstalled all the ATI-related packages as well as all the unecessary xserver-xorg-video-* drivers that were installed. I then rebooted and from then on ALL of the kernels halt with the same error (i.e. it didn't fix the problematic kernels, it just broke the only one that was working...) Any ideas on what i should try next? Thanks in advance. Pavlos.

• A glitch after Ubuntu Installation. Cannot boot Ubuntu

  I am trying to create a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.10 with Windows 7. My hard disk allocation were as follows: Windows 7 NTFS 100 GB /boot EXT4 200 MB SWAP LINUX SWAP 4 GB / EXT4 46 GB After installation is complete, instead of getting the boot screen of Ubuntu, it directly boots from windows 7 without asking anything. What is wrong? I run the Live Cd again using USB drive and I see that the \boot, and \ are occupied with most likely Ubuntu data. Now How do i point my Laptop to point to Ubuntu Boot instead of Windows Boot

• How can videos from Ubuntu drive appear on web page and play in an embedded Flash Player?

  I have a shared folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04. Users drop videos in. Ubuntu runs a Cron task to convert them to FLV format and put them into another folder. All I would like is a simple web page that displays all the files in that folder as links, and when you click on the link for the video you want to play, it should play in the same web page inside an embedded Flash/SWF player. Sounds really basic but I'm actually struggling to find a simple solution. Any thoughts appreciated!

• Acer Revo (ION platform) + Maverick + 5.1 surround over HDMI

  I've had a turbulent relationship with my media centre box. Every upgrade I perform on it seems to bring a brand new set of audio issues (the opposite of my desktop where things seem to get better and better). It's a Acer Revo 3600. That's basically an low-end Intel Atom chip with a Nvidia 9400M onboard. On paper that's perfect for something like a media centre. But having just upgraded to Maverick, the sound properties box only wants to offer me stereo sound over HDMI. The exact setup goes: Revo - Onkyo AV receiver - LG TV. The Onkyo box strips off the audio (supporting 7.1 -- though we're only using 6 speakers) and feeds the video onto the TV. I'd like to get to a point where Ubuntu thinks it's doing 5.1 over HDMI, upmixing stereo to 6ch and supporting DTS/AC3 (through Boxee). I've had this working before but it's frankly been a bit of a hacktastrophe. The audio chip is recognised as Nvidia MCP79/7A HDMI in alsamixer if that helps.

• Creating a spin from my installation

  Over the last 6 months or so I have tweaked & customized my Ubuntu installation until I have what I feel is a perfect Distro! Now I would like to turn it into a custom Ubuntu spin that can be run either as I live DVD/USB or installed to a users HDD. Is there an "easy" way to do this? I would want to use the standard Ubuntu installer but the distro would have it's own name, so I may need to customize the installer to reflect this.

• Can't use my keyboard nor the touch pad while installing on a Dell Vostro 1510

  I am stuck with a very annoying problem which does not allow me to even install Ubuntu on my laptop (Dell Vostro 1510). In a simple walk through of the problematic scenario... I boot the Ubuntu from a boot able CD. I got to a point where it ask for the language options, I select the English as my option using arrows keys and press enter. Then the option come where a.) try from the live cd b.) install ubuntu c.) etc etc Is needed to be selected. For which I press enter. Once I press enter... In any of the next steps of installing Ubuntu, my keypad and touch pad does not work. P.S.: My Batteries are completely dried Up... Can't use batteries. Does this problem has anything to do with batteries?

• How can I fix crashing Flash on Chromium?

  If I try to watch any flash video, I get a notification bubble telling me that the Shockwave Flash plugin has crashed. When run from the terminal, I get this error whenever flash crashes: [xxxx:xxxx:xxxxxxxxxx:FATAL:base/process_util_linux.cc(594)] Out of memory. where the 'x's are seemingly random numbers. Chromium reports its version as 9.0.597.94 (73967). I have tested in other browsers (Midori, Firefox) and flash works properly there. This is a new problem, that I assume was caused by an upgrade. How can I fix this?
