• Venezuela's Highly Inflationary Economy Means Changes to Financial Statements

  This is a bit of an esoteric topic, but given the number of U.S. Companies (particularly oil companies) that operate and have subsidiaries in Venezuela, I think it is worthy of an honorable mention. As you may or may not know, Venezuela's currency has had some changes over the years. In 2008, the Venezuelan Bolivar became the Bolivar Fuerte which dropped three zeros. So Bs.10,000 became Bs.F.10 and all their bills and coins were changed to reflect this. Then on Jan. 8, 2010, the government devalued the currency by 100%. The conversion from VEF to USD dropped from 2.15 to 4.30. (I always wanted to visit Venezuela; I guess it's time to book my vacation). The SEC recently labeled Venezuela a highly inflationary economy. This means that US companies with investments/subsidiaries in Venezuela will need to apply highly inflationary accounting rules starting on Jan. 1, 2010. In addition, companies need to make more detailed disclosures when the Venezuelan reported balances differ from the actual US dollar denominated balances. In a nut shell, if you formerly used translation, then starting Jan 1 of this year, you must now use remeasurement (or temporal method) to restate your Venezuelan entity's financial statements. See ASC topic 830, Foreign Currency Matters, which states that "[t]he financial statements of a foreign entity in a highly inflationary economy shall be remeasured as if the functional currency were the reporting currency." For you non-accountants that I haven't bored and are still reading at this point, the reason why the SEC is doing this is to ensure financial statements are presented as accurately as possible. Hyperinflationary economies have volatile currencies, such as Venezuela (it's not every day a currency devalues 100% overnight) which can distort financial statements if the local currency (Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte) is used as the functional currency. To make financial statements more accurate, the reporting currency of the U.S. parent (US dollars) should be used as the functional currency. FASB.orgactually has a nice write-up on this.

  I tried to install g++ using packages from another user. offline..but there were errors. • Ougoing telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

  I am trying to telnet from Ubuntu server (running Maverick) on ec2 to another machine I have set up not on ec2 - we'll call it "server-x". The two machines are connected via vpn. I can ping from the ec2 machine to server-x no problem. On another machine also on the vpn but also not on ec2 I can telnet to server-x without issue so it is accepting incoming connections on that port. But when I run telnet from the ubuntu instance to server-x I get : ubuntu@ip-10-111-11-11:~$ telnet 5.1.1.1 9143 Trying 5.1.1.1... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused Other telnets work like this: ubuntu@ip-10-111-11-11:~$ telnet imap.gmail.com 993 Trying 173.194.76.108... Connected to gmail-imap.l.google.com. Escape character is '^]'. I have disabled ufw on the ubuntu machine. Is there anything else that can be blocking this outgoing connection? I tried adding the outgoing port to iptables but I'm not certain I'm doing that right.

• what is a normal developer to pageview ratio?

  I work for an e-commerce site that has lately been shedding its workforce. I was hired ten months ago as a UI Developer. At that time we had three other developers. One was the technical lead who had been with the company for 10 years. The other two were server-side developers who had been there for 10 and 3.5 years respectively. In ten months, the technical lead left for a better position, one developer was laid off, and the other very recently left. So, I am now the only developer on staff. We have one DBA and one network administrator. They are currently looking to hire another developer but are not willing to pay enough to hire a senior person. I consider myself a junior developer with two years of experience. I have argued that we need to hire at least one senior developer and another junior developer if we're going to keep our current site operational (not to mention develop new features)...even if that means laying off staff in other departments. Right now we get 6.5 million pageviews per month, and I feel like 3.2 million pageviews per developer must be incredibly abnormal. My question is then: what is a normal developer to pageview ratio? Are there any industry standards or literature on the subject that I can use to argue for more staff?

• Libraries for eclipse with CCSv5 from Texas Instruments

  My system is Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and i have to run a 32bit version of eclipse to use the TI plugins for CCSv5 but it doesn't work. I tried to run eclipse in a 62bit java environment but it doesn't even start. Now I got "java version "1.6.0_30"" from Sun in 32bit and now eclipse starts but can't use the TI plug ins and I get the following errors in bash: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so: falsche ELF-Klasse: ELFCLASS64 /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so: falsche ELF-Klasse: ELFCLASS64 Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so and this in a popup-window when Itry to use the plugin: The selected wizard could not be started. Plug-in com.ti.ccstudio.project.ui was unable to load class com.ti.ccstudio.project.ui.internal.wizards.importexport.temp.ExternalProjectImportWizard. An error occurred while automatically activating bundle com.ti.ccstudio.project.ui (352). • How to have other divs with a flash liquid layout that fits to the page?

  Basically the majority of my content is flash based. I designed it using Flash Builder (Flex) and Its in a liquid layout, (everything is in percents) and if im JUST embedding the flash content it scales to the page fine, and i have the flash content set to have a padding of 50 px. I put a header div in fine with no problems, but I have 2 problems, the first being the footer div seems to cover up the buttom of the flash content in IE, but it looks just fine in chrome. How can I solve this? I'm using the stock embed code that Flex provides, I tried to edit the css style for the div which I think is #flashContent and give it a min width and min height but it didnt seem to work, actually anything I did to #flashContent didn't seem to do anything, maybe its not the div i need to be adding that attribute to... And my other problem is I dont even know where to start when it comes to placing a div thats 280width by 600height colum to the right side of the flash content. If i could specify a size for the flash content, and the float it left, and float the colum right, and clear it with the container div id be just fine....But remember the flash content is set to 100% Scale (well techically 100%x80% because it looked better that way). Does anyone know how I can start to deal with creating a more complex scaleable flash layouts that includes other divs? ALL WELL MAINTAINING IE SUPPORT? IE is ruining my life. • How do you use blank lines in your code ?

  There has been a few remarks about white space already in discussion about curly braces placements. I myself tend to sprinkle my code with blank lines in an attempt to segregate things that go together in "logical" groups and hopefully make it easier for the next person to come by to read the code I just produced. In fact, I would say I structure my code like I write: I make paragraphs, no longer than a few lines (definitely shorter than 10), and try to make each paragraph self-contained. For example: in a class, I will group methods that go together, while separating them by a blank line from the next group. if I need to write a comment I'll usually put a blank line before the comment in a method, I make one paragraph per step of the process All in all, I rarely have more than 4/5 lines clustered together, meaning a very sparse code. I don't consider all this white space a waste because I actually use it to structure the code (as I use the indentation in fact), and therefore I feel it worth the screen estate it takes. For example: for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) { if (i % 3 == 0) continue; array[i] += 2; } I consider than the two statements have clear distinct purposes and thus deserve to be separated to make it obvious. So, how do you actually use (or not) blank lines in code ?

• Selling Android apps from Latvia? or should I just put banners?

  I am in Latvia ( which is not supported to sell apps at android market ), so I am thinking about the best way of monetizing my app. So far I've come up with such options: somehow imitate that I am from a supported country, get a bank account there, etc. use PayPal for in-app purchases. The player get, say, first 10 levels for free, but then is asked to pay 0.99$ for the rest of the game. downsides: player might not feel comfortable entering his paypal details into an app. also android market might not really like that. making the app free and get money from advertising... let's do some calculation here, say, I get 1m free downloads, each user during his playtime would see 10 banners, therefor 10m / 1000 * 0.3 = gives roughly 33k$ ( if we use adMob with their 0.3$ per 1000 impressions ). On the other hand, if we use paypal in app purchase, we need a 3% or more conversion rate to beat this... hmm... What do you think about all this? Thanks! edit: from what I just read all over the net, it looks like advertisers will change their eCPM price a lot without you understanding why... while using in-app paypal purchase you can at least somehow monitor the cashflow.

• Red Gate and the Community

  I was lucky enough to join the Communities team in April 2011, having worked in the equally awesome (but more number-crunchy), Finance team at Red Gate for about four years before that. Being totally passionate about Red Gate, and easily excitable, it seems like the perfect place to be. Not only do I get to talk to people who love Red Gate every day, I get to think up new ways to make them love us even more. Red Gate sponsored 178 SQL Server and .NET events and user group meetings in 2011. They ranged from SQL Saturdays and Code Camps to 10 person user group meetings, from California to Krakow. We've given away cash, software, Kindles, and of course swag. The Marketing Cupboard is like a wonderland of Red Gate goodies; it is guarded day and night to make sure the greedy Red Gaters don't pilfer the treasure inside. There are Red Gate yo-yos, books, pens, ice scrapers and, over the Holidays, there were some special bears. We had to double the patrols guarding the cupboard to protect them. • WPA2 authentication fails on Ubuntu 12.04 using Rosewill RNX-N1

  Decided to reduce the clutter in the house and replace a wired connection with a wireless one on my wife's system using USB network device Rosewill RNX-X1. I can see and connect to unprotected network, but WPA2 authentication repeatedly fails. RNX-X1 works on other systems (including TV); also have 2 of 'em and tried each. Worth noting that I recently switched from Comcast to CenturyLink and so switched routers. The system connected successfully to previous router (Linksys EA4500) using WPA2. Would think it is the router (Actiontec C1000A) but all other devices (TV, iPad, Windows, Blackberry, and Squeezebox) connect ok. Would appreciate some diagnostic guidance and insight (phrased for a newbie!)
