  • What are the performance differences between PCI-Express x16 and x4

    I have two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots on my motherboard, but one of them is actually just x4. For passing through my graphics card to a virtual machine I need to use both slots simultaneously and unfortunately, the easiest way for me to achieve that is putting the stronger card in the x4 slot (secondary slot; I need the stronger card to be in the secondary slot, not the primary). As such I am wondering what sort of noticable performance differences I can expect from using the x4 slot with a strong card as opposed to having it in the true x16 slot. Does it limit the performance so much that the strong card in the x4 slot will actually perform worse than the significantly weaker card in the x16 slot? (For spec comparison I am using a GTX-670 in the x4 slot and GTX-550-Ti in the x16 slot) What implications does this have?

  • Tuning Windows 7 for use in a VM

    I'm running Windows 7 in a VirtualBox Virtual Machine, and would like to make it run in a more streamlined fashion. I'll be using the install primarily for testing web apps, and have no need for it to run quickly. I would like it to run with minimal memory requirements, and with minimal changes to its virtual hard drive's contents. Changes to the hard drive contents, for example the paging file, result in larger snapshot sizes. Another recent post of mine seems to be related to this issue, but does not directly address issues with Windows. One concern that I have is that Windows seems to be using 17% of its paging file even with over 900MB of memory marked "Standby" or "Free". My uneducated guess is that this is being used to store indexes or some other data that helps to speed up the system but is not really necessary. I'm also wondering if it's normal for Windows to use over 500 MB of "In Use" memory with no apps running. Will this amount decrease if I reduce the amount of "installed" memory in the VM? What steps can I take to reduce the system's memory footprint without incurring an increase in paging file usage?

I want to limit my access to some data and what I want is that I should be able to access the data only on certain days of the month (e.g., every 3rd day). Is there any way like encryption or some utility to allow me to only access data on specific days? One idea that I was thinking of was to encrypt the data and store the password (will be complex and long so that I couldn't remember it right away) on some website which would then email me back the password in future on those specific days.

I've got several Macs with Mountain Lion (10.8) and presume I can use this evaluation license to test the OS for my consulting company. What else do I need to run Windows 8 in virtualization (as I'd rather not mess with BootCamp for several reasons)?     I'm trying to repair an xp pro install using the repair cd The issue is a corrupted registry. Following the MS help center instructions, I made a batch file to replace the registry. It's not working. Does the CD need to match the edition and service pack of Windows on the disc? How can I tell (retroactively, with no Windows access) what edition/sp is installed? Any other ideas/thoughts? I am considering an pgrade install to Windows 7... TH\hanks!

  • Create a playlist in iTunes based on a hard drive folder

    I'd like to be able to base playlists in iTunes on a folder on my hard drive. For example, say I have this directory structure: C:\MP3s\Doctor Who Music C:\MP3s\Star Wars Music Importing all those MP3s into iTunes is really simple - at the bare bones version you can just drag the MP3 folder into the iTunes window and it does the rest. But, having done that, what I'd like to be able to do is point iTunes at each of those directories and have it turn them into their own playlists, so I end up with a Doctor Who Music and a Star Wars Music playlist based on the MP3s locations on the hard drive. Does iTunes have a way to do this, or is there a way to trick it into this with some other program? (I'm on Windows, but I'm sure Mac users would also appreciate answers to this as well.)

    I have a lenovo X1 that I am looking to dual boot windows and ubuntu on. I am having an issue. The disk came with 4 partitions SYSTEM_DRV, Windows C:, Lenovov Recovery, Hibernate Partition I have a SSD (250 gb) I have shrunk Windows C: so that I have 100gb of unallocated space. My plan was to install ubuntu on that. But when I try to create a new partition to install ubuntu on. Windows is saying I have to convert to a dynamic disk. I don't really understand the difference between Dyanimc and Basic disk but a quick search I am assuming I dont want to do this as I boot from this disk? Any suggestions on what I can do to dual boot? Thanks

  • Is there any way to play Netflix (stream) in Windows Media Player 11?

    Googling for a solution yields a ridiculous page on eHow that instructs to insert a DVD from Netflix. But I am not interested in the DVD option. I am only interested in streaming and unfortunately none of my browsers (IE, FF, Chrome) uses the hardware acceleration built into my video card. The only way I can play non-choppy video on my PC is via Windows Media Player, but WMP doesn't list Netflix as one of the supported online stores for some reason. Any idea or trick how stream Netflix on WMP 11 instead of a browser?

    My droplet has 512 MB memory and is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bits and a Rails 4 application + several workers. It's running well. I tried to deploy the same thing on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bits droplet and I've got plenty of memory related problem (can't fork). Is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS using way more RAM than Ubuntu 12.04 LTS? Is there something I should know to lower memory usage ? Should I stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

  • How can I rip a DVD but merge/join episodes

    Some background. I have the Pink Panther Collection, they have about 30 episodes on each DVD. Now I want to watch this on my $MobileDevice. So I went and converted it to m4v or avi. This of course went splendid with both Handbrake and AutoGK but the problem is that I want ONE file per DVD, both Handbrake and AutoGK creates one file per episode. So here finally is my question. Does anyone know how to persuade Handbrake or AutoGK to create one video file with all the episodes? Or can anyone recommend another (free/cheep) tool for the job? Oh and no cheating by telling me to join the files after conversion. I have never found a video joiner that did not disappoint me (usually bad audio sync).

  • Does VMware_ThinApp_4.0.3_169725.msi contain Trojan.Win32.Vapsup in it? [closed]

    Today I ran a full system scan using Online Armor++. It detected Trojans in the installer. I have had this installer on the computer for many months and I do not remember if I ever installed it on this PC or not. For some reason I unpacked the installer with 7zip though. I was probably going to attempt to make it portable. Anyway so I had the installer in a folder, and another folder next to it with all of the installers files unpacked. The VMwareVS.cab file that was extracted from the installer, also had its files extracted into another folder. This was all done many months ago. OA++ did not detect the installer itself as as Trojan VMwareVS.cab, but it did detect 4 of the files that I had unpacked as Trojans. Here are the details of what the scan detected on my PC today. Note: I uploaded these files to VirusTotal....the Ikarus and A-squared engines(the engines from Online Armor++) are not detecting anything. But some of the other engines are detecting the same Trojan that OA++ detected(Trojan.Win32.Vapsup).     I want to perform a surface scan on my harddisks (S-ATA, P-ATA, USB and E-SATA) in windows VISTA. Is it possible to do this without scheduling the scan on next reboot? It takes a lot of time and I would like to be able to use the computer during the scan. I can accept that this might not be possible on the window partition disk, but I cannot see why it shouldn't be possible on other disks.

  • Linux Mint does not start after renaming home directory

    I am new to linux and was just trying to rename the only directory in home from rk to rhk. I messed up the whole thing and the settings. Created some new thing named rhk which I can't remember as it got all messed up and Now I am getting nothing after Linux Mint 10(julia) boots up - no start menu, no panel, no taskbar nothing. I tried to work in the recovery mode and got some(downloaded) 216mb of something(in the repair broken packages) hoping that it might help but didn't help. Moreover whenver I have booted in it shows messages like Could not update ICEauthority file /home/rk./.ICEauthority there is a problem with the configuration server. (usr/lib/libconfig24/gconfsanitycheck2 exited with status 256) The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: GNOME_mintMenu" The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: GNOME_IndicatorApplet" Naulitis could not create the following reqiured folders: /home/rk/Desktop, /home/rk/. Naulitis Moreover Alt+F2 gives Run application or run with file and nothing seems to be working.

Does it matter what model I get, or is it such that I can just buy whatever happens to be on sale today? Are there advantages to a certain brand over another?   • Problems switching to QEMU control panel with -nographics

    It seems that the terminal does not recognise CTRL+ALT+2 when typed, so I don't know how to quit the QEMU emulation, or switch to the QEMU control panel. I am running Mac OSX Lion, and I type $ qemu-system-arm -M verdex -pflash flash.img -nographic -sd sdcard.img to start QEMU emulation of an ARM system in the Terminal. I learned from this site that typing CTRL+ALT+2 should work, but the only thing that happens to me, is that a "2" is printed on the command line of the virtual operating system. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Is this a Mac specific issue? (The same problem occurs in both terminal.app and iTerm2)

  • Configuring Notepad++ to run knitr2pdf

    Sorry for such a basic question but since I do not have a degree in programming... I am a user of R, knitr and Notepad++. I was trying to configure Notepad++ to run pdflatex and knitr(knit2pdf). By googling I found how to do it for pdflatex but I did not find anything for sweave/knitr. The following are the good ones for pdflatex http://www2.sofi.su.se/~mbe/docs/npp_r_latex.pdf http://www.tlhiv.org/ma497/software/ I inserted cmd /c cd /d "$(CURRENT_DIRECTORY)" && pdflatex.exe -shell-escape "$(FILE_NAME)" into the runrun menu in Notepad++. I do not fully understand the command though. I will appreciate any help on this. Please direct me if you can to any resource for learning these commands. I will be grateful to get any help in configuring Notepad++ for running knitr.

  • Win 7 accessing large files uses 100% RAM

    Running Win 7 64-bit SP1 with 8 GB RAM. I first noticed this problem when using the GUI to copy some large (5+ GB) files from one disk to another. What happens is the physical memory in use rises quite quickly to 100% and the system comes to a crawl. If I just start to access the file in a media player (it is a movie) the memory usage climbs up slowly but eventually reaches 100%. When copying the same files via XCOPY I do not have this problem. Using RAMMAP I see most of the memory usage is under "Mapped File" and is allocated under the "Active" column. If I select "Empty System Working Set" the RAM usage drops back down but then starts to climb back up. Any ideas on what I can check/test to eliminate this issue?
