• Snapback in Firefox

  In my address bar, on the left of the star, there is an option Snapback: [Empty] for every site. I haven't seen this before and I don't have the Snapback plugin. Doesn't anyone know where it may have come from and what it does? I recently upgraded to 3.5.6 on Ubuntu, and may have had some plugins upgraded, but not sure which. I have a ridiculous number of plugins on this comp otherwise I could just try disabling them one at a time.

• Why do my numbered headings break when I apply a watermark?

  I have an MS Word 2010 document. I am editing it in compatibility mode. I have heading 1s as a numbered list. When I apply a watermark to the document the headings break. The number and background shading remain correct, but the text "collapses" - so the word "Introduction" appears one letter wide with all letters drawn one on top of the other (you can open Font properties for the headings and see the entire word in the preview; font spacing shows as normal). Why does this happen? Windows 7, SP1. Opening doc over network from Sharepoint.

• Ubuntu 12.04 froze during update, won't boot

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop, and every time i tried to update it, it would freeze for a few seconds, and tell me that the updates could not be downloaded. After many, many tries I managed to get them downloaded, but then in the middle of installing them, it froze. Completely. No mouse movement, no blinking lights, no nothing. After a few hours of letting it sit there, I finally hit the power button to do a hard reset, and now when I select Ubuntu on the boot screen (Dual-boot with Windows 7), I get a blank purple screen, and then nothing. Another freeze. I've tried getting into the console, but no command I input has any visible effect. I have a ton of music stored on the partition it's in, so I'd really rather not have to reinstall. My specs, to the best of my knowledge: Clevo Corp model B7130 (Sager custom) CPU: Intel Core i5 @ 2.53gHz (4 CPUs) Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 425m 4096 MB RAM Drivers: Whatever comes with the download of 12.04. As a side-note, I installed Ubuntu via the Windows Installer program (wubi). Does that make a difference?

At best I get 30Mbs (this is an internet download) from a technology that boasts 300Mbs, even worse is the LAN where to date best i have ever gotten is 1Mbs. It is literally quicker to copy the file to a USB and walk it to the other computer. • ownCloud WebDAV interface seems to be broken

  I've been trying to host ownCloud on my server but everytime I try to it tells me this : Your web server is not yet properly setup to allow files synchronization because the WebDAV interface seems to be broken. Please double check the installation guides. This is my setup : Windows Server 2012 R2 IIS 8.5 PHP 5.5.11 ownCloud 6.0.3 MySQL 5.6.17 I tried google the error but I can't seem to find anything usefull. Some say I should try if this works : [hostname]/remote.php/webdav/ and yes I can navigate to this folder and I can open files from there. The calendar works and I can also just upload files the web version of ownCloud the only thing that doesn't seem to work is the sync client. • Dell XPS m1530 system cannot boot need 130w or greater

  I have a Dell XPS M1530 and I lost my old AC adapter but ordered a new one. For the longest time it always had a battery charge so I was able to boot into the OS but now it is completely dead. I have a generic charger that slowly charged the laptop when it was in the OS but does not when the computer is off. When I boot up I get the following error: The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. The system can only boot with a 130 W power adapter or greater. Strike F1 key to shutdown. I cannot even enter the BIOs setup screen or boot menu, is there a way around this? I heard from the local tech that Dell has a special feature to boot from thumb drive before getting past the initial logo. I am doing my best to avoid purchasing a new charger since it worked just fine when the OS was running, I am hoping to get this thing going. Is there a way to charge the battery externally? • Location of truetype fonts

  I would like to create a small script that installs a few truetype fonts on the user's system. On my Ubuntu machine the truetype fonts are located at /usr/share/fonts/truetype. However, I'm not sure if this location is the same on all machines. Is there a way to find out where truetypes fonts are stored on any Linux system? Update After some research I found that the path usr/share/fonts/truetype is specified in the XML file /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. It's an XML file, so I can use XPath to get the dir: xpath -q -e 'fontconfig/dir[1]/text()[1]' /etc/fonts/fonts.conf I don't know however if this file will exist on all (or most) Linux systems.

• Epson XP-600 will not print properly with all new ink recently installed

  I just installed brand new Epson 273 ink cartridges ($64 worth!) in my Epson XP-600 printer. One box had all the colors plus black, and one had the fatter black cartridge. I am not getting ANY black print on paper, although, when I lift the cartridges out, they show ink inside. Now the yellow is saying LOW though all cartridges are less than 2 weeks old. I only use this printer sparingly—not for business or work reasons. I am ready to scream, as the ink cost almost as much as the actual printer (which is barely 7 months old)! Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

  I'm trying to use the RBC9 SpaceNavigator TEST x64 build drivers for my SpaceNavigator 3d joystick so that it can work as a normal joystick in games like Quake. Unfortunately, I get the error "This version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature" and in the "Device status" in device manager, I get "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)". Is there a way to work around this issue?

• Unable to connect to shared (iscsitarget) dvd-rw drive on ubuntu karmic box

  Intro I have desktop with DVD-RW drive that runs primarily on Linux (namely Ubuntu 9.10). My wife has netbook that rins Windows XP with no cd/dvd drive. There's also LAN through our ADSL modem/router. I've "ported" (actually, I've just grabbed sources and ran dpkg-buildpackage) iscsitarget package from Ubuntu Lucid to Karmic (here are packages), installed it (sudo aptitude install iscsitarget; sudo m-a a-i iscsitarget) and configured it in the following way (/etc/ietd.conf): Target iqn.2020-01.local.develop7-desktop:storage.disc.dvdrw Lun 0 Path=/dev/sr0,Type=blockio #I've skipped commented lines Also, I've opened port 3260 with ufw: $ sudo ufw status | grep 3260 3260 ALLOW 192.168.1.0/24 Problem But (here's the trouble) I still can't connect to this target from Windows box. Microsoft Software iSCSI Initiator screams "Logon failure" upon connect attempt, and, respectively, fails to connect. After unsuccessful connection attempt I've noticed this line in dmesg | tail's output: iscsi_trgt: ioctl(299) invalid ioctl cmd c078690d Question So the question is — what's wrong with my config/iSCSI target/whatever else? • DPMS, keep screen off when lid shut

  I have a laptop running linux. In my xorg configuration, I have DPMS setup so that the screen automatically turns off during several events. Here's my issue. When I close the lid of the laptop, the screen goes off as expected, but if a mouse event occurs (like if something bumps into the table...) then the screen turns back on even though it is closed (I can see the light through the side of the laptop). Is there a way to prevent the screen from turning on during a mouse event if the lid is closed?

• Sync iPhone applications in iTunes

  Suppose I have one the one hand one iTunes library on a PC used to sync Outlook contacts and calendar plus on the other hand one iTunes library on a Mac that syncs music, podcasts, apps, ringtones, etc. Both libraries are based on iTunes 9.0.2. It turns out that the iTunes library on the PC always tries to sync apps and ringtones as well. Unfortunately, this boils down to deleting apps and ringtones from the iPhone because the apps are not part of the iTunes library on the PC. After unchecking the checkbox to sync apps and ringtones and plugging the iPhone into the Mac the checkbox is also unchecked on the Mac. It seems as if the settings for syncing apps and ringtones are stored on the iPhone rather than in the particular iTunes library. Whenever syncing apps and ringtones is active on one machine it is also active on the other and vice versa. How can I make the PC ignore apps and ringtones and only sync contacts and calendar?

• Visual Studio hangs Windows

  I have: Windows XP Pro SP3 with latest updates, drivers, .NET, etc. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2GB RAM 150GB HD ATI Radeon HD 3400 Recently (as early as a week ago) Visual C++ (both 2005 Pro and 2008 Express) started hanging up my computer. Whenever they are run, after 5-20 minutes of work the computer freezes. Everything becomes unresponsive, including the mouse cursor. No combination of keys does anything. What's strange, is that Winamp/Firefox continues to play whatever it was playing at the time (internet radio, mp3 playlist, etc). The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've run CCleaner and a full AVG antivirus scan, both of which found nothing suspicious. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

• Disabling Skype automatic update

  How to stop skype from searching or at least downloading update without consent? I want that annoying "Update skype now" dialog box that keeps popping up before I log in to Skype and after I log in to Skype from appearing at all. Few months ago this used to work: 1) C:\Users\”YourName”\AppData\Local\Temp folder. 2) Find the file called SkypeSetup.exe, and delete it. 3) Create a text file in the folder, rename it to SkypeSetup.exe 4) Right click on the new file you just created and ask for properties. 5) Next left click the security tab then left click the advanced button. 6) Now left click “Change Permissions” and then “Add”. Enter “Everyone” (without the quotes) where it sez’, “Enter the object name to select (examples):” and click “OK”. 7) Now check the “Deny” box for “Full control” and click “OK”. obtained from HERE, but now it seems this has stopped working. The worst part is Skype seems to download ~30MB of executable setup file without my knowledge before bugging me with the dialog box to update it, and there seems to be no direct way to disable this download. And disabling the skype updater service does not seem to work either. Is there any kind of patch or registry hack I can use to stop skype from auto updating? Or should I start looking for an alternative to Skype altogether?

  I want to grant a user (username: paul) access to all directories shared by root with mod 770. I do it this way: groups root (here comes a list of groups in which root user is) usermod -a -G group1 paul usermod -a -G group2 paul usermod -a -G group3 paul ... All the 'group1', 'group2', 'group3' are seen in the group list of root user. However, after adding 'paul' to all groups above, he still can not write to directories shared by root user with mod 770. Did I do it wrongly?

  I'm finishing professional school and over the years have acquired a pile of notes and articles that I'd like to hang onto. I'd like to add to them and create sort of an archive of article and files that may be useful down the road. I'd also like to organize this collection of files not only by simple grouping but also with tags. I feel like that will make searching through them years later much easier. Suggestions on software that would be good for this? Just a general file manager, something that uses tags that can be attached to each file? Thanks

• Should I get a desktop PC if I will move abroad

  Hello, This is probably a bit of a personal opinion style question - should I buy a desktop or a laptop? Generally I would prefer a desktop, since it's generally cheaper for the same specs, but it's about 50% likely that I will have to move to Japan (from UK) for a couple of years in two years or so. I have never heard of anyone travelling with a desktop - is it even possible without getting it destroyed? If anyone have experience in this area, could you suggest me if It's better to choose a laptop just for this reason? I don't really care about mobility on daily basis that much as I already have a netbook. Thanks for all the help and sorry if it's a bit off topic.

If it makes any difference, when I paste in text, the formatting is preserved (size color etc). Any ideas on what to try?

• "Open file location" is broken for Win Live Photo Gallery and Chrome

  Symptoms: Windows Live Photo Gallery: Right clicking on an image (.jpg, .png) and selecting the context menu item "Open file location" should open the containing folder in explorer. Instead, I get an error dialog stating "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." Chrome: After downloading a file (of any type), clicking the down arrow on the download status bar at the bottom and clicking "Show in folder" results in the same error dialog mentioned above. I'm using Windows 7. I'm pretty sure this is a registry entry gone bad but I've been unable to locate any information about this specific problem. It's not a file type association problem as I am not trying to open the files concerned, I'm trying to open an explorer window at the location for the file. I've found a similar issue that somebody had with explorer itself. However, the suggested registry fixes here for "Folder", "Directory" and "Drive" did not solve the problem. Also, If I use the searchbar in explorer to do a search, right click on a file and choose "Open file location", explorer jumps to that location without any trouble. I have not yet identified other programs with this issue.

• Persisting right click menu highlight

  I used to have this problem sometimes in Vista, but now I'm using Windows 7 (it was a clean install, reformatted hard drive) I'm disappointed that it's happening again. Basically what happens is sometimes when I right click on something and click an entry in the context menu, the highlight from entry remains on the screen, in front of everything else. I can get rid of it by changing my theme to Aero Basic and back again, but it's not a nice solution as it takes too long and often once I get rid of it, it comes back. Here you can see an example of what's happening - the highlight is there from Chrome's context menu. Does anyone know how to fix this?
