• Objective-C : Trouble with file download

  I ran in a bit of trouble downloading files with Objective-C. I use the download decideDestinationWithSuggestedFilename from Apples documentation page. http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/URLLoadingSystem/Tasks/UsingNSURLDownload.html As long as I want to download just one file it works fine but I want to download an array for files one by one. The problem starts with the second file. Right now my code will trigger the next download itself from the downloadDidFinish Method. Then I will get an unrecognized selector sent to instance error. For me it looks like the NSURLDownload that just finished the download is still in use somehow. Release is called but the must be a problem. If I just put an NSBeep in the downloadDidFinished Method and trigger the next file download manually it works fine. Looks like I have to wait a while till I can start the next download. I know this question is a bit vague but maybe someone got an idea.

• Lock Free Queue -- Single Producer, Multiple Consumers

  Hello, I am looking for a method to implement lock-free queue data structure that supports single producer, and multiple consumers. I have looked at the classic method by Maged Michael and Michael Scott (1996) but their version uses linked lists. I would like an implementation that makes use of bounded circular buffer. Something that uses atomic variables? On a side note, I am not sure why these classic methods are designed for linked lists that require a lot of dynamic memory management. In a multi-threaded program, all memory management routines are serialized. Aren't we defeating the benefits of lock-free methods by using them in conjunction with dynamic data structures? I am trying to code this in C/C++ using pthread library on a Intel 64-bit architecture. Thank you, Shirish

• UIImages on UITableView?

  what is the best method to display about 300 png images into a UITableView.. i dont wanna display them at the same time... i have 3 tableViewControllers that will each display about 100 imgaes.. (its for a catalog so the images are important to display) i used [uiimage imageNamed:] but that method caches the images and they dont get released so the memory usage is big.... is there any way to release the cache when the nav controller pushes a different view controller? i also tried [uiimage alloc] initWithContentsOfFile] but the images wont display.... any help?

• Strange behaviour of code inside TransactionScope?

  We are facing a very complex issue in our production application. We have a WCF method which creates a complex Entity in the database with all its relation. public void InsertEntity(Entity entity) { using(TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { EntityDao.Create(entity); } } EntityDao.Create(entity) method is very complex and has huge pieces of logic. During the entire process of creation it creates several child entities and also have several queries to database. During the entire WCF request of entity creation usually Connection is maintained in a ThreadStatic variable and reused by the DAOs. Although some of the queries in DAO described in step 2 uses a new connection and closes it after use. Overall we have seen that the above process behaviour is erratic. Some of the queries in the inner DAO does not even return actual data from the database? The same query when run to the actaul data store gives correct result. What can be possible reason of this behaviour?

  We have an Adobe Flex client talking to a .NET server using WebORB. Simplifying things, on the .NET side of things we have a struct that wraps a ulong like this: public struct MyStruct { private ulong _val; public override string ToString() { return _val.ToString("x16"); } // Parse method } I want the Flex client to treat this as a string. So that for the following server method: public void DoStuff(int i, MyStruct b); It can call it as DoStuff(1, "1234567890ABCDEF") I've tried playing with custom WebORB serializers, but the documentation is a bit scarce. Is this possible? If so how?

  Hello guys. I'm using ASP.MVC and trying to learn... I have the following controller // get all authors public ActionResult Index() { var autores = autorRepository.FindAllAutores(); return View("Index", autores); } // get authors by type public ActionResult Index(int id) { var autores = autorRepository.FindAllAutoresPorTipo(id); return View("Index", autores); } If i try http://server/Autor/1 I get a 404 error. Why is that? I even tried to create a specific method ListByType(int id) and the correspondent view, but that does not work too (URL: http://server/Autor/ListByType/1) Any ideas? Thanks in advanced EDIT Oh, the http://server/Autor works just fine. The method without parameters is spitting out my view correctly.

• What is the point of JComboBox's getSelectedItem()?

  I just read the JavaDoc for JComboBox (I promise I have a life... I wasn't reading through for fun. =P), and I think the problems I'm having with my program can be attributed to the getSelectedItem() method. The documentation says: Returns the current selected item. If the combo box is editable, then this value may not have been added to the combo box with addItem, insertItemAt or the data constructors. If you can't get values that were added with those methods or with the constructor, of what use is the method? And how can I get the value from an "editable" JComboBox? • How UIWindow#addSubview can make memory leak?

  Hello, I started to learn using Instrument, but I cannot figure it out. After I start my application, the UI shows up, I do nothing and after few seconds I can see memory leak detected: When I have a look at the second leak I can see the following stack: When I double click on the cell related to my code I can see that it is pointing to the following line of code: [window addSubview:newPostUIViewController.view]; from the method: - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { //creating view controller newPostUIViewController = [[NewPostUIViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"NewPostView" bundle:nil]; newPostUIViewController.title = @"Post it!"; [window addSubview:newPostUIViewController.view]; // Override point for customization after application launch [window makeKeyAndVisible]; } I wonder, how this can be a reason of a leak? I release newPostUIViewController in the dealloc method of PostItAppDelegate class. Any ideas how this could be explained?

  I'm trying to teach myself Ruby's Treetop grammar generator. I am finding that not only is the documentation woefully sparse for the "best" one out there, but that it doesn't seem to work as intuitively as I'd hoped. On a high level, I'd really love a better tutorial than the on-site docs or the video, if there is one. I think this may be related to limited lookahead, but I cannot find any information in any of the docs to even cover the idea of evaluating in the "or" context A bit more info that may help. Integer1 is apparently the class holding the eval() method. I have no idea why this is the case. I'm still looking for more info about treetop.

  i have a simple web service with one method that returns List<org.company.data.mp> i've created a simple web service client and specified a web service with wsdl. in netbeans i try to call a web service operation: right click, insert code, ... and i pick my web service operation. the code gets inserted but the method's return type is not List<org.company.data.mp> but it is List<org.company.server.mp>! i don't get it.. in the package "server" there is no class called mp! i check the implementation class of my web service - it says the return type is ...data.mp not ...server.mp

• JAVA Classes in Game programming.

  I'm doing a little strategy game to help me learn Java in a fun way. The thing is I visioned the units as objects that would self draw on the game map (using images and buffering) and would react to the mouse actions with listeners attached to them. Now, based on some tutorials I've been reading regarding basic game programming, all seems to be drawn in the Graphics method of my Map class. If a new unit emerges, i just update the Map.Graphics method, it's not as easy as making a new Unit object which would self draw... In this case, I'd be stuck with a whole bunch of Map methods instead of using classes for rendering new things. So my question is, is it possible to use classes for rendering units, interface objects, etc, or i'll have to create methods and just do some kind of structural programming instead of object oriented? I'm a little bit confused and I'd like to have a mental blueprint of how things would be organized. Thanks!

  Hi, I'm trying to use the MVC objects in google maps version 3. What I can't seem to figure out is why my zoom_changed method is only invoked once. When I first load the map the zoom_changed method is invoked.   Is is possible to set the Max length of a ComboBox in wxruby? I have looked in the documentation but find nothing http://wxruby.rubyforge.org/doc/combobox.html But if i do my_combobox.methods.sort I get set_max_size and set_min_size in the list. But When I call it my_combobox.set_max_length(100) I only get undefined method 'set_max_length' for #<Wx::ComboBox:0x4d4a914> I've also tried to call it as a private method def my_combobox.max(i) set_max_length(i) end my_combobox.max(100) But with the same result. The issue I want to avoid is that if somebody pastes 6000+ characters in my Combobox the text becomes white.

• ShowDialog won't run

  I've come across a situation where I try to run a simple line of code in a method Dim res As DialogResult = frmOptions.ShowDialog() but nothing happens. The dialog box will not appear. If I run this method from another location in the code it executes fine (i.e. displays the form in dialog mode and code executes fine thereafter). Hence, it may be the way in which I arrive at this code that is causing my problem, but I cannot see to find what is wrong. When I pause the debugger the line of code is highlighted in green but I can't see to step over it or into it. Any idea what may cause this to happen, or what I should be looking for that might be causing the problem?? Thanks for the help!

  I am getting OutOfMemoryError: java heap snippets of the method: { // step 1: I am creating a 2 dim array int totalCombination = (int) Math.pow(2.0, (double) vowelCount); here vowelCount > 10 // step2: initializing my array // step3: and using that array } My Question: each time this method is called, that array is getting created. Is it possible that the array is not getting released . In windows taskmanager i can see memory used by java is purely incremental. So it is not that at a point heap size is less, but memory is repetitively used and not released somehow. Please let me know if you need more detal. Please help to debug the error. Anuj

  Hi. I got a wsdl file in email. At first I didn't know how to use it. I've simply saved the file to my disk. Opened visual studio...added a service reference...provided path to file, and service was discovered. I opened the object browser to see the types and methods that got imported. • How to draw a full ellipse in a StreamGeometry in WPF?

  The only method in a StreamGeometryContext that seems related to ellipses is the ArcTo method. Unfortunately it is heavily geared to joining lines rather than drawing ellipses. In particular, the position of the arc is determined by a starting and ending point. For a full ellipse the two coincide obviously, and the exact orientation becomes undefined. So far the best way of drawing an ellipse centered on 100,100 of size 10,10 that I found is like this: using (var ctx = geometry.Open()) { ctx.BeginFigure(new Point(100+5, 100), isFilled: true, isClosed: true); ctx.ArcTo( new Point(100 + 5*Math.Cos(0.01), 100 + 5*Math.Sin(0.01)), // need a small angle but large enough that the ellipse is positioned accurately new Size(10/2, 10/2), // docs say it should be 10,10 but in practice it appears that this should be half the desired width/height... 0, true, SweepDirection.Counterclockwise, true, true); } Which is pretty ugly, and also leaves a small "flat" area (although not visible at normal zoom levels). • Entity Framework in n-layered application - Lazy loading vs. Eager loading patterns

  Hi all. This questions doesn't let me sleep as it's since one year I'm trying to find a solution but... still nothing happened in my mind. Probably you can help me, because I think this is a very common issue. I've a n-layered application: presentation layer, business logic layer, model layer. Suppose for simplicity that my application contains, in the presentation layer, a form that allows a user to search for a customer. Now the user fills the filters through the UI and clicks a button. Something happens and the request arrives to presentation layer to a method like CustomerSearch(CustomerFilter myFilter). This business logic layer now keeps it simple: creates a query on the model and gets back results. Now the question: how do you face the problem of loading data? I mean business logic layer doesn't know that that particular method will be invoked just by that form. So I think that it doesn't know if the requesting form needs just the Customer objects back or the Customer objects with the linked Order entities. I try to explain better: our form just wants to list Customers searching by surname. It has nothing to do with orders. So the business logic query will be something like: (from c in ctx.CustomerSet where c.Name.Contains(strQry) select c).ToList(); now this is working correctly. Two days later your boss asks you to add a form that let you search for customers like the other and you need to show the total count of orders created by each customer. Now I'd like to reuse that query and add the piece of logic that attach (includes) orders and gets back that. How would you front this request? Here is the best (I think) idea I had since now. I'd like to hear from you: my CustomerSearch method in BLL doesn't create the query directly but passes through private extension methods that compose the ObjectQuery like: private ObjectQuery<Customer> SearchCustomers(this ObjectQuery<Customer> qry, CustomerFilter myFilter) and private ObjectQuery<Customer> IncludeOrders(this ObjectQuery<Customer> qry) but this doesn't convince me as it seems too complex.   Hi All I am having a problem in RSpec when my mock object is asked for a URL by the ActionController. The URL is a Mock one and not a correct resource URL. I am running RSpec 1.3.0 and Rails 2.3.5 Basically I have two models. The NotesController correctly handles the Mock Subject object, and create! the new Note object. However when the NoteController#Create method tries to redirect_to I get the following error: NoMethodError in 'NotesController should create note and redirect to subject without javascript' undefined method `spec_mocks_mock_url' for #<NotesController:0x1034495b8> Now this is caused by a bit of Rails trickery that passes an ActiveRecord object (@subject, in our case, which isn't ActiveRecord but a Mock object), eventually to url_for who passes all the options to the Rails' Routing, which then determines the URL. My question is how can I mock Subject so that the correct options are passed so that I my test passes. I've tried passing in :controller = 'subjects' options but no joy. Is there some other way of doing this? Thanks...

• Android: onClick on LinearLayout with TextView and Button

  I have a Fragment that uses the following XML layout: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:background="@drawable/card" android:clickable="true" android:onClick="editActions" android:orientation="vertical" > <TextView android:id="@+id/title" style="@style/CardTitle" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:duplicateParentState="true" android:text="@string/title_workstation" /> <Button android:id="@+id/factory_button_edit" style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:duplicateParentState="true" android:text="@string/label_edit" /> </LinearLayout> As you can see, I have an onClick parameter set on LinearLayout. Now on the TextView this one is triggered correctly, and on all empty area. Just on the Button it doesn't invoke the onClick method that I set. Is this normal? What do I have to do so that the onClick method is invoked everywhere on the LinearLayout?
