  Hello, Can I use Collections.binarySearch() method to search elements in a PriorityQueue? Otherwise, how can I apply search algorithms to a PriorityQueue? • When to use AsyncOperation and AsyncOperationManager

  Hi, I've spent many many hours tonight reading up on implementing the event-based asynchronous pattern Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any articles at all on witting a class that only supports one Async invocation. Every example I've seen assumes that a method call will be called more than once and thus, should have a userState object passed into the MethodNameAsync You'll see that MS makes mention of this in the third bullet point on this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228974(VS.80).aspx under the "Simultaneously Executing Operations" heading. But I'm confused. Should I be using AsyncOperation and AsyncOperationManager classes to have asynchronous functionality where a method can only be called by one thread at a time? A link would also be nice :) Thanks

• Flipping PDF pages in QuartzDemo application

  I am working on modifying the quartzdemo application so that it can show another page from a multipage pdf on tap screen event. So far I have stripped it down to the point where it displays the PDF on any page as initial page, but I can't seem to get it figured out how to make the quartzview display anything else then the initial page. I'm guessing that the pushViewController has something to do with this. I have setup an event which gets fired up fine on screen tap. The event sits in QuartzView.m and I get a simple alert on screen tap showing that the tap was registered. I would like to use this method to draw a new page instead of showing the alert, page number doesn't matter, I'll work on incrementing (page flipping) later, I need an example of how to call these methods (if its even possible).   Hello, I'm tidying up some of my code with the correct scope on some methods and attributes (I have two classes and at the moment I have a number which I just declared as public to get working, but I feel I should look into this and make private where possible, for better practice) When working in eclipse it's suggested on one method, when i change it private from public, that I can fix it by dropping off the scope so the method just says "static void" instead of public/private static void. Is this a better scenario to have nothing, rather than private or public - or is the default scope equivelant to public anyway ? Thanks

• How to get objects after CoreData Context merged

  Hi, I tried to save data and merge with CoreData and multi-thread for iPhone app. But I can't get managed objects in the main thread after merging. I wrote code just like this: [managedObjectContext performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(mergeChangesFromContextDidSaveNotification:) withObject:notification waitUntilDone:YES]; [self performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(didMerged:) withObject:objectIds waitUntilDone:YES]; So I tried to pass objectIds to get NSManagedObject instances in the main thread which were generated in another thread. At first I tried "objectWithId" method but it generated fault objects. Then I tried "existingObjectWithID" method but it generated objects partly and others were nil with following Error: [Error] Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=133000 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 133000.)" What is wrong? Is there any way how to retrieve all objects by objectIds after merging in another thread? Thank you.

• How Can I Check an Object to See its Type and Return A Casted Object

  I have method to which I pass an object. In this method I check it's type and depending on the type I do something with it and return a Long. I have tried every which way I can think of to do this and I always get several compiler errors telling me it expects a certain object but gets another. Can someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong and guide me in the right direction? • Why is Django reverse() failing with unicode?

  Here is a django models file that is not working as I would expect. • WCF Custom WSDL XmlSerializerOperationBehavior

  Hi, I have code that builds a custom WCF wsdl on the fly. In one particular scenario, the WSDL exported should use the XmlSerializerOperationBehavior as the IWsdlExportExtension as opposed to the default DataContractSerializerOperationBehavior IWsdlExportExtension. However, every time I try this from the WSDL generation code, I get a null reference exception from the ExportBody method of the XmlSerializerMessageContractExporter (which is used internally in System.ServiceModel by the XmlSerializerOperationBehavior ExportContract method). I've reflector'd it and I can't see anything obviously wrong. For some reason, .NET also doesn't want to work with source stepping in this scenario... Simply, the most basic way I can reproduce this is var c = ContractDescription.GetContract(typeof(IMyService)); foreach (var op in c.Operations) { op.Behaviors.Remove(typeof(DataContractSerializerOperationBehavior)); op.Behaviors.Insert(0, new XmlSerializerOperationBehavior(op)); } new WsdlExporter().ExportContract(c); // throws NullReferenceException Does anyone have any ideas on this? • SubSonic: MySqlDataReader closes connection.

  I am using SubSonic 2.1 and entcountered a problem while executing a Transaction with SharedDbConnectionScope and TransactionScope. The problem is that in the obj.Save() method I get an "The connection must be valid and open" exception I tracked down the problem to this line: // Loads a SubSonic ActiveRecord object User user = new User(User.Columns.Username, "John Doe"); in this Constructor of the User class a method "LoadParam" is called which eventually does if (rdr != null) rdr.Close(); It looks like the rdr.Close() implicitly closes my connection which is fine when using the AutomaticConnection. But during a transaction it is usally not a good idea to close the connection :-) My Question is if this is by design or if it's an error in the MySqlDataReader.

• Bit manipulation, permutate bits

  Hi. I am trying to make a loop that loops through all different integers where exactly 10 of the last 40 bits are set high, the rest set low. The reason is that I have a map with 40 different values, and I want to sum all different ways ten of these values can be multiplied. (This is just out of curiosity, so it's really the "bitmanip"-loop that is of interest, not the sum as such.) If I were to do this with e.g. 2 out of 4 bits, it would be easy to set all manually, 0011 = 7, 0101 = 5, 1001 = 9, 0110 = 6, 1010 = 10, 1100 = 12, but with 10 out of 40 I can't seem to find a method to generate these effectively. I tried, starting with 1023 ( = 1111111111 in binary), finding a good way to manipulate this, but with no success. I've been trying to do this in C++, but it's really the general method(if any) that is of interest. I did some googling, but with little success, if anyone has a good link, that would of course be appreciated too. :)

  If I need to convert an int to byte[] I could use Bitconvert.GetBytes(). But if I should follow this: An XDR signed integer is a 32-bit datum that encodes an integer in the range [-2147483648,2147483647]. The integer is represented in two's complement notation. The most and least significant bytes are 0 and 3, respectively. Integers are declared as follows: Taken from RFC1014 3.2. What method should I use then if there is no method to do this? How would it look like if you write your own? I don't understand the text 100% so I can't implement it on my own.

• Textbox height in a small browser window

  Hi folks, I have here a peculiar problem. We have a RAP application intended for use on a PDA/phone, but when it is displayed in a small browser window, all the textboxes on the form(s) are too tall (around twice the height they should be). I've stepped through the code (The form is using GridLayout, number of columns=1, make columns equal=false) and have found that the TextSizeDetermination.getCharHeight() method returns an incorrect font size if the browser window is too small - 13px if the window is large, 26px (exactly double) if the window is too small. Interestingly enough, it seems that if the window is too small, probeStore.containsProbeResult(font) in that method returns true and uses probeStore.getProbeResult(...).getSize().y for the font size. Otherwise, if the window is larger, it returns false and uses TextSizeEstimation.getCharHeight(...). Does anyone have a pointer or two for getting around this? Actions are usually performed by invoking methods on objects, whether explicitly as object.doSomething() or implicitly as object = something (using the apply() method underneath the syntactic sugar). All I can think of is that a constructor is being used to do something in addition to constructing an object. In other words, it is having side effects, such as in this case going off and doing something on the web.

As it seems to me, "clear()" method works fine and saves the instance of "deassociated" object. But then, while deleting, django uses another memorized copy of this very object and since it's still associated with object we are trying to delete - whooooosh! ...bye-bye to relatives :) Database was arcitectured before me, and in somewhat odd way, so I can't escape these "related_names" in reasonable amount of time. Anybody heard about workaround for such a trouble?

When I was calling these method from javaFX applet, all worked as expected. Now I'm trying to call them from JAX-RS webservice (I don't see any logical difference as in both cases ejb was looked up in initial context) and I keep getting this exception. When I set up XADatasource in glassfish 2.1 connection pools, I got nullpointer exception on em2. Any ideas what to try next? Regards

However at some points I need to add an extra variable or two to the query string such as 'admin/useraccounts/mod/2'. When I simply tack on bits to the end of the rewrite rule it works if all the variables are 'page/home/rand/rand' or 'admin/useraccounts/mod/2', but if anything is missing such as 'page/home' I get a 404. • iPhone App not saving values to .plist file

  Hey everyone. I am working on an app that displays a modal the first time the consumer uses it. I have a .plist file that will store the information I request once the Save button is pressed. I can read from the .plist file fine and when I run my save method it SEEMS to work fine but the .plist file is not updating. I'm not so sure of the problem here.   I am re-using Apple's AdvancedTableViewCells example to create a custom, fast-scrolling tableview. Specifically, I am using their CompositeSubviewBasedApplicationCell method which draws the content on the tableviewcell with drawRect Everything works, but how do you hide a label or set the tag for a label or image using their method? Doing it this way is pretty new to me (without IB), so I apologize ahead of time if it's something easy. • How to View Android Native Code Profiling?

  I started my emulator with ./emulator -trace profile -avd emulator_15. I then tracked down the trace files to ~/.android/avd/rodgers_emulator_15.avd/traces/profile, where there are six files: qtrace.bb, qtrace.exc, qtrace.insn, qtrace.method, qtrace.pid, qtrace.static. I can't figure out what to do with these files. I've tried both dmtracedump and traceview on all of the files, but none seem to generate any output I can do anything with. How can I view the proportion of time taken by native method calls on Android?

• valueOf() vs. toString() in Javascript

  In Javascript every object has a valueOf() and toString() method. I would have thought that the toString() method got invoked whenever a string conversion is called for, but apparently it is trumped by valueOf(). For example, the code var x = {toString: function() {return "foo"; }, valueOf: function() {return 42; }}; window.console.log ("x="+x); window.console.log ("x="+x.toString()); will print x=42 x=foo This strikes me as backwards .. if x were a complex number, for example, I would want valueOf() to give me its magnitude (so that zero would become special), but whenever I wanted to convert to a string I would want something like "a+bi". And I wouldn't want to have to call toString() explicitly in contexts that implied a string. Is this just the way it is?

  Hi, I have a Windows-Forms Application that I configured to use with an ASP.NET Service that is an Authentication service using a custom MembershipProvider. When I call Membership.CreateUser in the Windows Application a NotSupportedException is thrown telling: "Specified method is not supported.". I tried creating a web page in the website and test the MembershipProvider, everything works just fine when woeking from within the website. Any ideas or link for how to use custom (not SqlMembershipProvider) MembershipProvider will be really appreciated! Edit: The method ValidateUser does work. The overriden CreateUser doesn't work I tried Override Sub CreateUser(.......) As MembershipUser Return New User() End Sub But I still get the same excetption as before.

• How do I properly handle a faulted WCF connection?

  In my client program, there is a WCF connection that is opened at startup and supposedly stays connected til shutdown. However, there is a chance that the server closes due to unforeseeable circumstances (imagine someone pulling the cable). Since the client uses a lot of contract methods in a lot of places, I don't want to add a try/catch on every method call. I've got 2 ideas for handling this issue: Create a method that takes a delegate and executes the delegate inside a try/catch and returns an Exception in case of a known exception, or null else. The caller has to deal with nun-null results. Listen to the Faulted event of the underlying CommunicationObject. But I don't see how I could handle the event except for displaying some error message and shutting down. Are there some best practices for faulted WCF connection that exist for app lifetime?
