• Problem with the screen resolution on Ubuntu 12.04

  I just installed ubuntu on my laptop. The screen resolution is stuck in 1024x768. The screen is made for 1280x800. When I run xrandr I get: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 61.0* 800x600 61.0 1280x800 isn't offered and I get gamma size error. I was going to look into the Xorg.conf file but I couldn't locate it. 1280x800 was displayed in Windows 7 and I think it is being displayed in Grub before ubuntu starts also. Here are some details about my computer: CPU Intel atom D2500 1.86GHz Chipset Intel 945GSE+ICH7M LCD 14" TFT 16:9 Resolution ratio 1280*800 Video Card Intel integrated GMA950 Does anyone know how to fix this?

• Ubuntu 10.10 screen goes nuts and unreadable

  Running Ubuntu 10.10 in its own partition, also have Oracle Virtualbox 4 with Windows XP. Because i previously had a problem with a dark screen when i let the laptop on and i didn't use it for a long while i had set Power settings to Never sleep, never let the Display sleep. Monitor on install set to Laptop resolution 1400 by 1050, refresh rate 60 Hz, rotation Normal. The problem was when the computer was left on and i returned after about an hour, the screen was unreadable, similar to what used to happen to graphics cards before multisync became normal. So it appears as though the graphics card was asked to use a resolution it couldn't handle and went nuts. I had to power off the system, on restart everything was fine. Thanks for any suggestions. • What is the best freeware app for Windows to mount EXT4 partitions (from a GPT 4TB Disk) as RW, safely without corrupting the EXT4 partition?

  My Computer is set up as Dualboot Windows and Ubuntu. I have 1 OS drive, and 1 hard drive with a /backup partition (which has all my family photos and data) and it is ext4. Also note... it is EXT4, and it is GPT, and it is 4TB size. Anyway, Windows can not mount the /backup ext4 partition. What software/freeware do you reccomend for Windows? Preferrably looking for someone with experiance using it for a long time and not have problems with EXT4 partition which is a 4TB, GPT Disk. Thank you for your advice and guidance! Always, appreciate everyones help at askubuntu, you guys are the best. Any ideas?

• Keyboard activation bug

  I'm using Ubuntu's last version and there's still a little problem on my installation (already on previous versions). When I start the computer and reach the login screen, I have to wait about a minute to be able to begin to use my keyboard. That's not a real problem but that's kind of annoying. I've tried some things such as a lsusb via ssh and it worked and activated the keyboard without waiting. So I've tried to put it in the crontab (with @reboot) but it doesn't really work. Has someone got an idea how to solve this bug ? Thank you in advance.

• Not your typical Permission Denied Question

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 (64 Bit) on my computer. (My hard drive took a powder) Before, I could "mv" files around with the command. Now when I try I get the permission denied message. I also get the message about "man sudo" when I open my terminal. I am pretty sure I did not get that before. Can I add a user/administrator and change something in my orginal admin that I cannot change myself? I am getting really frustrated with this. I do not recall having the same problem before. I tried qksudo nautilus and it appears to run then it sits there with the cursor blinking but does not move.

• Why is it good to split a program into multiple classes?

  I'm still a student in high school (entering 10th grade), and I have yet to take an actual computer course in school. Everything I've done so far is through books. Those books have taught me concepts such as inheritance, but how does splitting a program into multiple classes help? The books never told me. I'm asking this mainly because of a recent project. It's an arcade video game, sort of like a flash game as some people have said (although I have no idea what a flash game is). The thing is, it's only one class. It works perfectly fine (a little occasional lag however) with just one class. So, I'm just asking how splitting it into multiple classes would help it. This project was in JAVA and I am the only person working on it, for the record.

• reading parameters and files on browser, looking how to execute on server

  I have a site done in Rails, which uses javascript to load files and generate forms for the user to input certain information. Those files and parameters are then to be used in a fortran code on the server. When the UI was on the server (using Qt), I would create a parameters file and execute the fortran code using threads so I wouldn't block the computer. Now that is web-based, I need to make the server and browser talk. What's the procedure for that? where should I start looking? I'm already using rails + javascript. I need that extra tool to do the talking, and no idea where to start.

  Ok. So while this isnt a programming question. I wanted to know how do people debug apps? How do you view log cat, and where these exceptions are thrown etc? And do I need to run the app on the emulator to see all the stuff, or is there a way to view this after running the app on my phone(while not being connected to the computer) Links to plugins and tips would be really helpful, as im gonna start work on my next game, and while the first one works fine, had a lot of problems while debugging.

• Cannot load a webpage with hp pavilion dv2000 laptop

  I am using an Ubuntu 12.04 cd to test out the os before I take the plunge, and I can't get webpages to load in the firefox application. When I look at the wireless settings, ubuntu says that my computer is connected to my home wireless network, but I am repeatedly prompted to enter my password (it keeps telling me that authentication is required by my wireless network). After a few rounds of this, Ubuntu seems to give up and tells me that wireless network is disconnected. Furthermore (I'm currently in ubuntu using a wired connection if it has anything to do with this), the wireless connection will randomly attempt to establish itself. I've entered rfkill list and all of the wireless devices therein say "no" - they're not blocked. I can connect to the network in Windows 7, so I don't think my network is the problem. Any suggestions?

  I am new to linux and was wondering why launching applications is so slow. I've tried both Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit Computer Specs: Toshiba Satellite p755 CPU: Intel core i7-2670QM @2.20GHz Ram: 8 GB Using integrated intel hd 3000 graphics When I install the first thing I do is update, which takes about an hour or so. I would assume I'd be good after that, but when launching things like the firefox, system settings, thunderbird it takes a much much longer time than on Windows 7. Please help me.

• How to install ubuntu from desktop w/o internet access?

  I am trying to install ubuntu on a netbook without a CD drive. I first attempted a flash drive, but it did not work, so I decided to use the flash drive to transfer the application that can install from the desktop. However, this is a secondhand school computer that needs its borderline spyware security suite wiped before it can access the internet, so I cannot use the install from desktop application. Do I have any other options? I do have access to an external CD drive that I could try, but I am unconvinced that I would get different results since it would have to go through a USB port. Any and all input is very much appreciated!

• Grub Doesn't Load after Update

  Hi Everyone, After I updated ubuntu (I believe it was most likely a kernel update) and restarted I selected ubuntu from the windows boot loader (I am using wubi). At this point I would usually land on the grub loader; however, I see something about NTFS file not found and a couple other screens flash then the computer restarts. I have tried pressing ESC right after to try and get some options, but I think grub is just not found or something... Not sure what is going on.. Any help would be much appreciated :). Thanks!

• How to restore my D Drive

  I need help in recovering one of my drives from my windows7 machine. I used to have two drives, c and d. I used D to save all my data. i have been using my laptop from 3years. and when I saw it today, i cant find D drive on my computer :( . When I opened the parititioning wizard it showed me that the space I allocated for D is there but as unallocated space. I badly need the data from D.   I wanted to use Ubuntu 12.04 for its long term support. But I cannot stand Unity. I cannot find a way to replace it with compizconfig, so I tried replacing it with Lubuntu. When I restarted my computer started to load lubuntu, then just went right on with ubuntu as if nothing had happened. Likewise, it shows lubuntu when it shuts down. What is the deal? I'm confused here, is ubuntu 12.04 supposed to be an operating system or a desktop interface? Can I even run ubuntu with a Lubuntu interface? Is there a way to do this in compizconfig that I should be doing instead?

  Using http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer So I tried installing Ubuntu for the first time today, and it installed all well, but then it froze at the 'Preparing to run Ubuntu for the first time...' screen. I then proceeded to restart my computer and load Ubuntu from the OS selection screen. My screen completely froze and the picture didn't even come up fully as if my video driver was not installed correctly. Are there any fixes to this problem? Would greatly appreciate it. • Switching to an external display, when primary is broken

  I've successfully install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (x86) on an old(er) laptop that unfortunately has a broken screen, so there is an external monitor plugged in. On the livecd it come up on the secondary display just fine and I was able to install ubuntu and everything. Unfortunately when I reboot into Ubuntu proper now, the secondary display is off and I'm literally driving blind here trying to switch it to the secondary display. Using Nvidia open source drivers. Things I've tried: Rebooting back into livecd, mounting the partition and trying in vain to find a config file (it uses the open source drivers so no Xorg.conf I could edit manually) Trying to blind-type xrandr settings into what I hope is terminal: xrandr --output VGA1 --auto (nothing happened) Trying to blind install openssh-server so I could ssh into it and maybe configure it from my working computer. For some reason though, no luck. Ubuntu really should default to expanding to all screens for this use case.

  As the admin of my machine, I want users to be able to log into my computer with ssh, but I'm looking for a graphical way to be notified that a user is connected at the moment. If multiple users are connected, I want a list of connected users, their location, name, etc. This could be in the form of a forceCommand and 'alert' command when someone logs in, plus a icon saying how many people are connected right now in the notification bar, with the option to click on it to have more information about these users. Is there such a tool available in ubuntu, and if not, how to do it (I'm guessing it's not that difficult and could be done with under ten bash command lines) ?

• LXDE will not suspend when laptop lid is closed, and will die when woken up

  I am not an experienced Linux user, although I have been using Ubuntu occassionally some time already. ( Since Feisty Fawn probably? ). Now I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and it is nice ( well, after I installed LXDE, Unity sucks and I didn't really like gnome-fallback-session ), but it has one problem: After being suspended, when I wake my computer up, it starts up and in about 5 seconds it dies. Like a normal shutdown. Then, when I start it again, the screen stays blank, so I have to hard-turn it off - only then, when I turn it on, it works. It is an MSI laptop, about 3-4 years old. The second problem is: After installing LXDE, when I close the laptop lid, it does not suspend. I can only suspend using the shutdown menu - and the waking up problem remains.   I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?

• Theme is broken in some places

  I am using a computer that started out on 11.10. I have since updated it several times, and installed and used a great number of WMs (Unity, XFCE, Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon). I am not sure how, but somewhere along the way (probably when I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04), some parts of my desktop theme were broken. I have tried switching themes and installing new themes, but that does not work. Neither did a removal of (and log out/login cycle) the ~/.config/dconf folder work. Specifically: on several menus, the central part of a button icon is a "grey square" that doesn't fit in with the theme (picture below). the window and desktop right click menus looks ugly. The same kind of grey field covers the items, and the square checkbox looks weird (just filled with a uniform blue). The separator is a thick line that looks out of place. It seems to be a similar problem to that of window buttons (picture below).

• Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

  I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

• WiFi is painfully slow, sometimes stops altogether

  Lately my WiFi connection has been quite slow, and sometimes I lose my internet connection altogether (but the computer does not actually disconnect from the WiFi network). This only affects my laptop and only when it's running Ubuntu, so I think it must be a problem with Ubuntu. I haven't changed anything recently; this is on 12.10 64-bit. What could it be? Update: It's doing this now. The connection isn't completely dead, it's just staying under 5 kB/s. Still frustrating though. It also seems to affect all users.

• Blank Screen on 12.04

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

• 12.04 freezes on install

  I'm new to ubuntu and can't for the life of me understand how to get around this issue. I'm having a problem where when I insert the boot disk that i burned for 12.04, it loads and gives me the language option and select an installation type, i select either try ubuntu / install ubuntu and it begins to load. Then after about 5 mintues of the purple screen with the dots under the UBUNTU it freezes the whole computer, and the only way to get out is to turn off the laptop with the power button. I have read previous threads saying people had similar "freezing" issues including ones that mention my model of laptop, HP Pavillion DV1000. But it appears their problems are post installation and relate to their wireless cards. I have tried changing the boot options (F6) and I am totally stuck. Can anyone shed any light on to this issue? • cannot install ubuntu 12.04 using wubi

  I recently installed windows 7 on my pc and I have been unsuccessfully trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on it. I used to have dual boot system before both with windows and linux. I changed my hard drive from ide to ahci (default option) burned the ubuntu cd properly (not the .iso file) using the ubuntu 12.04 distribution I downloaded from the official site, set boot priority to cd/dvd but.. Nothing. It tries to boot from the cd, doesn't manage and turn to boot from the hard drive. I also tried wubi. I opened it through windows, got the window that asks me to choose "demo and installation" or "more on ubuntu" (something like that), I choose the first option, reboot manually my computer and it keeps returning on windows mode and doesn't boot from the cd. What can I do? Thanks!
