• What should I look into to find a career path?

  I am finishing up my bachelor's degree in computer science and am feeling somewhat burnt out in the field. I enjoy solving problems, programming, and using computers to find said solutions, but I feel that I never really concentrated on anything in particular and so I don't have any specialties or a path in technology to follow. I feel like a 'generic programmer' with nothing special to offer. My question is, where can I look to find this niche? I have interest in the environment, nature, sustainability, and other similar things. Is there something in these areas in particular where specialists are needed? My question is somewhat vague but where did you "find your niche"?

• My ubuntu 11.10 gets weird lately

  I have quite a lot problems lately(about 2 weeks) running Ubuntu 11.10. First, flash playback in chrome hangs and lags all the time. While in Firefox is better, but still lags. Playing video files in the preinstalled Movie Player lags too. Second, I've turned automatic on and in some occasions, after I switched the computer on and successfully loaded the desktop, however, in just a minute or so, the screen just got black out and directed me back to the login page. I thinks there are bugs, please tell me how to correct those. Sysinfo: CPU: i5-2400 MB: GA H61M D2P B3 (no video card) Drive: Intel 320 40GB Thanks. p.s. should I upgrade to 12.04??

• How can I remap my keys to act like the Macintosh keyboard (like hold alt l + l click = r click)?

  I want my keyboard layout to act like a Macintosh keyboard. It's hard to use my computer after years on a mac. I want to disable my right mouse click, and replace it with alt + right mouse click. The alt key will also act like ctrl. I want my left ctrl to be the HUD key. I still want my super key to be the same. Can someone please make a script, or point me in the direction of a program to do all this with ease. If you were to make a script/whatever, can you please make one what will reverse all keyboard changes in-case I feel that it is not the same. I will add to the post if I miss anything. Thank you.

• Drives will not show up on PCI RAID card in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Computer specs Intel E8200 Dual Core MSI G45M MB Ultra U12-40739 PCI Expansion Card - 2 SATA Internal Ports, 1.5Gbps, RAID 0, 1, JBOD 6 GB DDR2 Q1. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Amahi, for using Grey Hole, last night. The two disc on the raid card do not show up under Ubuntu 12.04LTS but they do show up under grey hole so I know the drives and the raid card are working and there. I need to access them in Ubuntu to format them and place folders on them but I can not see them or figure out how to access them. Q2. Only 4 of the six drives connected to the MB are showing in Ubuntu, but they show as active in grey hole. I also need to access these drives in Ubuntu as this is my storage server. I am new to LINUX so any help you can provide with simple directions will be greatly appreciated . Thank you Mechh69

• Changing OS from Windows to Ubuntu

  So my computer has 2 operating systems on it, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. When I downloaded Ubuntu i had a ton of trouble booting windows 7 up again, then I downloaded GRUB and switched my default OS back to Windows. Sadly though, I'm trying to get into writing php with Apache. I Downloaded WAMP (windows Apache MySQL php) but for some reason, php doesn't work. I though i would try downloading LAMP (Linux apace MySQL php) but whenever I boot up my PC, I don't get a chance to enter the Ubuntu OS. How could I get back to running Ubuntu? Actually, it doesn't prompt me for a boot menu or anything. It just goes straight to the windows symbol

• Showing range on hexagonal grid

  Here is the situation. I have hexagonal board,and a unit on it,with speed or move value 4.Diffrent terrain has a diffrent cost.When i click on the unit,game should show me a move range. My solution was to check each hex in range of 4,with A* pathfinding,and if path cost was less than 4 then this hex was in range.Finally game nicely show me range of that unit. My question is: Is there other solution to search for range on hex grids or square grid,because even if i am really proud of what i did in my solution,i think,it is a little to exaggerated?:)) What make me ask this question?I noticed that when unit speed is 4 or 6 or even 8,time to computing range for my computer was really good,but when speed was 10 and more i noticed that i needed to wait few second to compute.Well in real games i rather dont see something like this and my A* pathfinding is rather well optimized,so im thinking that my solution is wrong.   I'm working full time 5 days a week, mostly between 10 and 14 hours a day. In the end of the day I'm very tired and just wanna take a shower, hang out and go to sleep. I have a lot of ideas that I want to implement and someday sell maybe through an online software business. I have my weekends free. However, when I get to the weekend I can't even imagine myself turn on the computer. But I really want to make my ideas happen, and I can't leave my job right now to devote myself only to my ideas. • Resume upgrade to 13.10

  I had 13.04 and started to upgrade to 13.10. But the computer hanged and I rebooted it. I did instructions from How do I resume a release upgrade/update? Now OS launches, but I upgrade is incomplete: there is no panels in Unity (just a background with some files on Desktop). I think that some post-install scripts didn't launch. Please help me with this trouble. P.S. Or how can I completely reinstall unity (with all of the dependencies)? • f12 and ctrl + f5 not working correctly [migrated]

  When I came back to my work computer after being away for a week I found out when I try to clear the cache and refresh the page via ctrl + f5 (or just f5) I get the prompt "Type the Internet address of a document, and Internet Explorer will open it for you" with a drop down list in IE. When I try f5 in Chrome and FF it opens the "Open file" dialog box. When I try to f12 for Dev tools in IE, Chrome & FF it opens up the print dialog box. Why is this happening and what can I do to revert it back to the way it was?

  I would like to install the latest version of Bibletime (2.9.1) on my computer because the version in the official repositories (2.8.1) has a bug with the "Mag" feature. I had installed 2.9.1 on 12.04 32 bit through one of the following ppa's: ppa:pkgcrosswire/ppa ppa:pkgcrosswire/developer-testing Now on an Ubuntu 12.04.1 64 bit, I'm getting a dependency issue. It seems that it depends on libsword8 but it should actually depend on libsword9 which is available in the repositories. • Update Manager Partitions

  Perhaps this is completely stupid, but here's my inquiry: I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on an external hard drive. On that HD there are 4 partitions. Two for operating systems, two for swap (unnecessary but I like it that way). The actual computer itself has Windows 7. If I use the Update manager to update to 12.10 or even 13.04, would the new Ubuntu install itself on the same partition it already was on? The other operating system I'm running on the Hard Drive is Lubuntu, for when I need to run Linux on older computers, if that matters. Thanks, Adam

• Sound not working

  I am new to ubuntu, but really enjoy it. I do have one issue with setting it up on my computer. It is a GoBook XR-1 and everything works perfectly except there is no sound. I've searched and tried everything that I can think of, even uninstalling ubuntu and trying Windows to see if the speakers worked. I found out that it wasn't the speakers or any hardware issues. I tried to download the Realtek drivers, but still no success.

  Possible Duplicate: How do I report a bug? discovered 2 bugs:: 1)cannot restart the computer when you click the top right icon power key "restart", it will stay on the splash image "ubuntu...",i wait for about 7 minutes and more, it also cannot restart, so, i have to uninstall the battery of the laptop...... 2)when i first update to the 12.10,not run for few hours, the "input method icon" on the top state bar is suddenly hide, when i use the shortcuts to switch the input method with "ctrl +space" it doesn' work at all, i restart the laptop, it can change the input method, but the state icon "a small keyboard icon is escape, i goto the "i bus" settings, but when i how to adjust it, the icon still can't display on the top bar (now i reinstall it use the iso file, this bug is fixed, but it cannot restart like the former one) it must has some problems of the "i bus" input method

• In 12.04, with my Linksys WUSB54G USB adapter I can see the networks, but cannot connect to any of them

  I recently loaded Ubuntu version 12.04 onto my computer, and I have a WUSB54G v4 USB wireless adapter. I first tried to get it to work by simply plugging my adapter into an open USB port. This seemed to work fine, it came up with a list of wireless adapters, so I clicked on the correct one and entered the security code. It looked like it was going to connect. It tried for about five minutes before I stopped it. I then decided to create a network as I also have one setup. I did this and it connected, only one problem, I couldn't get onto the internet. Please help me, I am new to Ubuntu and am totally lost.

• Can't interact with windows after first login

  Every time I restart my computer and login into my ubuntu account for the first time, I can't click on anything besides the bar on the left. So I can start Firefox from there, but I am not able to click on the new tab button etc. Same will all other apps. I can start the Terminal via the keyboard, but I can't move it around. So I have to logout via the keyboard and login again. Usually everything works fine now. Just waiting doesn't help. The only obvious change I made to Ubuntu was to move the /home directory.

• What is the sudo password after I deleted the password for the user?

  To have an easier access to the computer I deleted the user's password so it is blank. But now I'm still asked to type in a password for sudo actions such as installing programms, etc. I know that this belongs to Ubuntu's outrageous security policy (which is why I use Ubuntu in the first place..) but I don't have any password to enter any more!! The old user password is not accepted and anything else (like just hitting enter) doesn't work either. I already tried the recovery mode (root shell) way passwd USER< but it replied that it can't access the password or it has no authority. Thanks in advance for your help!

  I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous?   Quick and simple, my ubuntu doesn't want to load after installing with ubuntu. Starting the computer, at the screen to choose your operative system, first shows an error that windows failed to start, and later asks me to choose between ubuntu and windows. If I choose ubuntu, the same error happens again and I return to the same screen. If I choose windows, windows just starts normally as it was doing before I installed it. How can I solve this?? • How to automount usb drive reliably without fstab

  Hi I need a way to mount a usb drive without using fstab. I Cannot use fstab because the drive is not connected to my computer at boot. This causes an issue during any one off reboots because start up hang waiting for this device until a keyboard intervention to skip it. I cannot use my current script with just does mount /dev/sde1 /media/Backup because sometimes it changes to sdf. Consider this a server install. I can't use tools at the user or GUI level. I suppose the sum of my question is how to manually mount a usb drive from the commandline considering the reliability of the /dev/sd value isn't consistent. Thanks,

• External Hard disk not workng on windows after I formatted it on Ubuntu

  I formatted my Western Digital 500 Gb hard disk on Ubuntu 10.4 and now I want to use it on Windows 7 but it cannot detect it. I formatted it with FAT(applicable to all) option. I tried to Google this problem a bit and as suggested by one of the site i tried to format this drive with NTFS. Still windows cannot detect it. Drives in windows 7 is not a problem because I tried a different usb drive on it and it works. I can see the led of the drive glow when I connect it and I can also see remove drive safely option in lower right corner, but i cannot see any option in "my computer" to access the hard disk. I am new to Ubuntu. Any help is appreciated.

  i am a long time user of Ubuntu and this is the first time a such thing happens to me. I usually upgrade from a version to an other, but this time i wish to do a clean install. I want to totally remove my 12.04 and do a clean install of 12.10, i created a live USB then i restarted my computer to boot from USB, i got the following error: Product is covered by one or more of the following patents: US5,434,872, US5,732,894, (and many more) Under that i see: PCIe GBE Family Controller Series v2.38 Media test failiure Exiting PXE ROM And then it reboots I've searched a lot for an answer, i guess the problem is with something in my bios, but i didn't find a fix. I would really appreciate a fix for my problem. My laptop is a Toshiba p775 dual boot ubuntu 12.04 and windows 7.

• Can you run OpenGL 2.0 on modern machines?

  I'm looking to get into 3d with OpenGL, using SDL to help with other stuff. I found plenty of good tutorials (lazyfoo is a big one), but "Learning Modern 3d Graphics Programming" uses a newer version of openGL that I'm not able to run! I opened up OpenGL extensions viewer, and I can only run OpenGL 2.0, whereas most tutorials are in higher versions. I ask this because I've heard that just about everything in 2.* got depreciated in the newer versions, so I'm worried that my code might not work. I'm looking at a few other tutorials, but I'm so used to SDL that those just confuse me... So should I bother trying to do graphics programming now, or should I just wait until I can upgrade my computer?

• NetworkManager refuses to manage my WLAN interface

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6 on a brand-new Samsung NP900X4C. The installer detected the wireless adapter, took in the SSID and WPA passphrase, wrote these into /etc/network/interfaces and connected perfectly. Once installation was finished I wanted to switch to using NetworkManager to manage the wireless adapter, since this is much more convenient than fiddling with /etc/network/interfaces every time I find a new hotspot. Therefore I edited /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to set: [ifupdown] managed=true When I rebooted NetworkManager, the problems started: - The NetworkManager tray applet changed from saying device not managed to device not ready - I lost all internet connectivity as wlan0 would not associate to the Access Point - if I set managed=false in NetworkManager.conf and restarted both NetworkManager and networking services from the command-line, the Gnome desktop "semi-crashed" and lost all its Window Decorations, the panel, the launcher and basically became unusable. However if I restart the computer completely after setting managed=false, wlan0 once again works perfectly.

  I upgraded to 12.10 some days ago and now I'm unable to change between the environments. I currently have GNOME 3 (with extensions), KDE and, of course, Unity installed. The computer is a Lenovo G550. In the login screen I can get into the menu where the DEs are listed, but I can't select one. I can't use a test account of mine, which used GNOME 3, because after I logged in X crashes/restarts. Unity works, but I can't switch from the broken GNOME 3 to Unity. • Wireless mouse temporarily freezes when resume from standby

  I have been getting a very annoying problem since recently in Ubuntu 12.04, probably due to another update that did more bad than good... When I resume from sleep on my Lenovo Thinkpad T420, my wireless laser mouse (Logitech M705) freezes at regular intervals (15.20 seconds) for 5 seconds then works again. This happens regardless if the computer is on battery or on AC power. How do I debug this? I am getting tired of the fact that my system gets more and more unstable over time while it should be the opposite...
