• How to perform "tracert" like operation from browser?

  I'm remotely investigating issue with my friend's WIN XP computer. The browsers (Chrome and IE) won't show any pages but message with err_connection_reset in details. I've tried to perform "telnet google.com 80" and send there "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" from console and everything went fine, but browsers refused to give me anything. I've checked for presence of firewalls and proxy servers in the settings, but nothing seems to be there. What else to check?

  I am looking for a command-line tool for Unix (ideally, available in a Debian / Ubuntu package) for extracting all MIME parts from a multipart email message (or the body from a singlepart with an interesting content-type, for that matter). I have been using the mimeexplode tool which ships with the Perl MIME::Tools package, but it's not really production quality (the script is included as an example only, and has issues with what it regards as "evil" character sets) and I could certainly roll my own script based on that, but if this particular wheel has already been innovated, perhaps I shouldn't.

  I'm trying to get an lsyncd daemon running. I installed the lsyncd RPM from epel, but it doesn't seem to come with an init.d script. In the lsyncd repository, there's this script that works with Debian. However, when I try to run this under CentOS, I get this message: /etc/init.d/lsyncd: line 46: log_daemon_msg: command not found How can I adapt this to work with CentOS?

• Partition/install issues

  I am new to Ubuntu and tried to install 10.1 as dual boot option from a USB. At first I encountered the error when in partition dialogue of installation process that cannot find root directory. I did a search on Ubuntu forums and did this as in one of the posts. Make sure that the partition file system you wish to install Linux, Ubuntu or Backtrack on it is ext4, ext3 or ext2, and not FAT32 or NTFS. Then mount / on it: During the installation process press "change" on the partition you wish to use Make sure "do not use this partition" scroll is not chosen, scroll to ext4, ext3 or ext2 On the "mount" field write / Click ok, then next a message will appear saying something like "swap area was not defined, do you wish to continue or choose a swap area?", click "ok" and continue or click "go back" and choose another partition and click change, on the file system scroll choose "swap" and click "ok" and next All good but when I rebooted I could not find Windows vista as in dual boot option. Plus I could not see wireless networks and in the process of trying to find out what went wrong the soft switch somehow turned off and as I cannot boot in Windows I have no idea what to do. Again searching internet I found a post which said the dual boot problem can be overcome by installing gparted but when I tried I got the message Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information.. Done E: Couldn't find package gparted I thought I am going to copy my stuff from my hard disk and try to install Windows but I found out that I have two partitions which are different from what I had before installing Ubuntu. I now have filesystem partition1 119 GB ext4, swap partition 5 1.1 GB swap and extended partition 2 1.1 GB. And I cannot mount 119 GB where all my personal videos, photos are if still there. Now I cannot boot from Windows even. Need help on what to do? Best case scenario would be to be able to copy my stuff before I mess up the system further. Else a dual boot system and if not then how do I install vista again. I have Windows CD. Cheers guys and thanks in advance.

I have the same username and group set, of course, but... So, where is this peruser launchd tool configured, so that I can disable the daemons that are causing this error message?

• iPhone 4 activation trouble, after iOS 6 beta installed

  I have installed iOS 6 beta, when it was released, in this summer. Yesterday, I have a screen on my iPhone, that activation is required. But, it is impossible to activate, because "servers is unaviable". • Update Windows Defender schedule via command line or gpo?

  I'm looking to find a way to update some Windows Defender settings via command line, gpo etc. From my research it looks like windows defender creates a hidden scheduled task named 'MP Scheduled Scan', but modifying this task does not seem to make a difference as to what shows up in the Windows Defender UI. I have also done some process monitoring to see what data Windows Defender uses and I can see that it reads/writes to the 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan' ScheduleDay key, but if I attempt to modify this key, I get an "Error Writing the new values contents" error message.

However I can't get my laptop running on Windows XP to connect to my printer through my PC running on Windows Vista. I read all the posts but nothing works. I get an error message on my laptop saying 'The name of my network' doesn't give me permission. How do I change this?

  I have Microsoft Project Professional 2003 installed (11.2.2005.1801.15, SP2). I have been trying to open a MPP file created in a newer version so need the converter, which is part of SP3. But when I try to install the SP3 package (as downloaded from Microsoft's site) I get an error message box: --------------------------- Project 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) --------------------------- The expected version of the product was not found on your system. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Project (and Office) are licensed and otherwise work correctly.   I'm trying to run this in a Win 7 Professional admin console: schtasks /create /tn "Task at 16:40 on 10/27/2012" /sc "once" /st "16:40" /sd "10/27/2012" /tr "c:\python27\python.exe c:\users\jost\Desktop\executeScript.py" All referenced files exist. The error message I get is ERROR: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. What is wrong? Running the command directly on the command line works fine.

• SSH dns issue giving break-in error

  Address ..*.* maps to ec2---*-*.compute-1.amazonaws.com, but this does not map back to the address - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! I keep getting this when I try to log-in to my remote server. I have it set for key authentication and when this error comes through, I still have to push through the password. I want to use this for automated Git pulls, and I can't have this kind of error message. anybody know what is going on here and how to fix it?

• IIS Manager won't let me create an application

  Had a thing at work today on a Windows Server 2003 box. In IIS Manager I'm trying to create an application for a directory. So I've brought up the properties dialog and clicked the "Create" button and it did absolutely nothing - no error, the application name box stays greyed out and there's no gear icon on the folder. Also there was no event log message. Has anyone seen this happen or know of a solution?

• Outlook is looking for a smart card

  Dell computer with Windows 7 and Outlook 2003. I recently added a smart card reader to my computer for the National Guard so that I can access some military sites that require a smart card to log in. Now, every time Outlook attempts to download any mail from my civilian AT&T account (a pop e-mail server), I get a message asking me to "Insert a smart card". I've traced it to the send/receive feature (specifically receiving e-mails) but can find no reason that Outlook should be looking for a smart card.

  Hi, For some reason since we rolled out IE7 to the estate users are unable to download from the Internet, they get an error message "the operation could not be completed due to restrictions on the computer" I have checked the GPO and it allows downloads in the Default domain policy. • Gateway Laptop won't boot up ... hangs when initializing
