• How do I reference a pointer from a different class?

  First off, I despise singletons with a passion. Though I should probably be trying to use one, I just don't want to. I want to create a data class (that is instantiated only once by a view controller on loading), and then using a different class, message the crap out of that data instance until it is brimming with so much data, it smiles. So, how do I do that? I made a pointer to the instance of the data class when I instantiated it. I'm now over in a separate view controller, action occurs, and I want to update the initial data object. I think I need to reference that object by way of pointer, but I have no idea how to do that. Yes, I've set properties and getters and setters, which seem to work, but only in the initial view controller class. Peace Love applesauce.

• Core Data: Detecting the type and casting it

  I have set up a Core Data model that includes an entity, Item with a 1-M relationship with the abstract entity Place, so that an item has many places. There are several entities with the parent set to Place. I want to set up several UI elements depending on the descendent place types. I have a loop that looks something like this: for (Place *place in item.places) { } ... but I'm not sure how to detect what type the place is, and how to cast it to the proper type so that I can access its properties.   I want a regular expression to match valid input into a Tags input field with the following properties: 1-5 tags Each tag is 1-30 characters long Valid tag characters are [a-zA-Z0-9-] input and tags can be separated by any amount of whitespace Here's what I have so far--it seems to work but I'm interested how it could be simplified or if it has any major flaws: \s*[a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30}(\s+[a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30}){0,4}\s* // that is: \s* // match all beginning whitespace [a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30} // match the first tag (\s+[a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30}){0,4} // match all subsequent tags \s* // match all ending whitespace Preprocessing the input to make the whitespace issue easier isn't an option (e.g. trimming or adding a space). If it matters, this will be used in javascript. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

• In what package should a "Settings" class be placed?

  I'm in the middle of building an application but found myself too easily creating new packages without keeping the project's structure in mind. Now, I'm trying to redo the whole project structure on paper first. I am using a Settings class with public properties, accessed as settings for several other classes around the project. Now, since this Settings class applies for the whole project, I am unsure if it should be packaged and if so, in what kind of package should it exist? Or should it be in the root (the default package) with the main application class? I've been thinking about putting it in my utils package, then again I don't think it really is an utlity. Any strategies on how to decide on such package structure for example for a Settings class?

• D_WIN32_WINNT compiler warning with Boost

  Not sure what to make of this error. Added -D_WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 to Visual Studio's "Command Line" options under Project Properties but it says it doesn't recognize it and the warning still appears. I am also not sure how to add the Preprocessor Definition. :) Thanks for any help! 1Please define _WIN32_WINNT or _WIN32_WINDOWS appropriately. For example: 1- add -D_WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 to the compiler command line; or 1- add _WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 to your project's Preprocessor Definitions.

• trouble adding a rectange in actionscript

  I have a rectange that I've created and set its individual properties like so var aRect:Rect = new Rect(); aRect.x = 10; aRect.y = 10; aRect.width = "15%"; aRect.height = "15%"; addChild(aRect); I have 2 problems that the compiler seems to be choking on. The first is that the compiler chokes on 15% and "15%", with or without the quotes, neither works. The second is that adding the rectangle doesn't work. I tried all the following, but nothing works. addChild(aRect); Application.addChild(aRect); Application.application.addChild(aRect); stage.addChild(aRect); What's the deal, I thought actionscript would be nicer than mxml.

• Highlighting text in a textbox using Javascript

  Hi, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 webapp (with C#). I wanted to add a button which, when clicked would highlight selected text. By 'highlight', I mean change the CSS properties of the text so that it can stand out. I think this can be done with some clientside JavaScript. I know that you can assign a Javascript function to the onclick event of an HTML input button, but since I'm not very proficient at JS the function itself I have no idea how to write... • Visual Studio adds a circular reference when I drag and drop a user control from the Toolbox

  I have a user control C that is defined inside project P. C is present as a ".NET Framework Component" in my Visual Studio Toolbox. I open a form F (also defined inside project P) and drop C onto F. Once I do that drop, Visual Studio adds a reference under P pointing to P's own DLL. This is unnecessary and causes tons of build errors like The call is ambiguous between the following methods or properties... after which it lists the exact same method twice. If I go into References and delete the added reference, it builds correctly. Can I prevent VS from adding this unnecessary reference?

  In javascript you can call a function as a function or as a constructor. For example you can do : myObject = new Number(13); myPrimitiveValue = Number(13); or simply myPrimitiveValue = 13; I understand the difference between the results. Can you explain me under which reasonable circumstances creating a number, a boolean or a string as an object is desirable? For example, ability to set new properties (this is something you can do on objects but can't really do on primitive values) is almost always a bad idea for objects containing number/boolean/string. Why would I want a numeric/boolean/string object?

• What's some simple F# code that generates the .tail IL instruction?

  I'd like to see the .tail IL instruction, but the simple recursive functions using tail calls that I've been writing are apparently optimized into loops. I'm actually guessing on this, as I'm not entirely sure what a loop looks like in Reflector. I definitely don't see any .tail opcodes though. I have "Generate tail calls" checked in my project's properties. I've also tried both Debug and Release builds in Reflector. The code I used is from Programming F# by Chris Smith, page 190: let factorial x = // Keep track of both x and an accumulator value (acc) let rec tailRecursiveFactorial x acc = if x <= 1 then acc else tailRecursiveFactorial (x - 1) (acc * x) tailRecursiveFactorial x 1 Can anyone suggest some simple F# code which will indeed generate .tail?

  I use SPs and this isn't an SP vs code-behind "Build your SQL command" question. I'm looking for a high-throughput method for a backend app that handles many small transactions. I use SQLDataReader for most of the returns since forward only works in most cases for me. I've seen it done many ways, and used most of them myself. Methods that define and accept the stored procedure parameters as parameters themselves and build using cmd.Parameters.Add (with or without specifying the DB value type and/or length) Assembling your SP params and their values into an array or hashtable, then passing to a more abstract method that parses the collection and then runs cmd.Parameters.Add Classes that represent tables, initializing the class upon need, setting the public properties that represent the table fields, and calling methods like Save, Load, etc I'm sure there are others I've seen but can't think of at the moment as well. I'm open to all suggestions.

  In window, i can get the date created of the video from properties(right click). I have a few idea on this but i dont know how to do it. 1. Get the video information directly from video(like in windows), 2. By extracting the video name to get the date created(The video's name is in date format, which is the time it created). And i also using taglib-sharp to get the video duration and resolution, but i cant find any sample code on how to get the video creation date.   I have a program that works when, a file is opened with it using the right click menu in explorer. But if I select multiple files and then right click and open with my program then it opens multiple instances of my program, instead of just passing the multiple files as arguments to a single instance. The program is written in vb.net but is not a windows form, it is just a module, so I can to tick the Single instance option in the properties in Visual Studio. So how do I open multiple files from explorer context menu in a single instance.

  I'm adding some bindable CLR properties to my ongoing WPF application in my App class and I can't compile because of this inconsistent accessibility error. Inconsistent Accessibility: Property type 'SomeProj.Error' is less accessible than property 'SomeProj.App.LatestError' To fix this error I had to change class Error to public class Error. In VB, classes were assumed public and most of the time omitted that access modifier. Is this not the case in C# as well? I only recently made the vb-c# jump and little nuances like this in the syntax slow me down.

• How to access the service instance from host object in WCF?

  I am trying to incarnate some sort of ad hoc WCF service. I already managed to launch it and make it call its own web methods as some other guy's methods. The issue that I am facing is instance management. I have set [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.Single)] so it now has a global instance with the same properties for all clients. But besides that I need it to call other services of its kind while listening to incoming requests from clients (similar crazy services). While debugging I noticed that the ServiceHost's constructor calls the constructor of the service class. So, I assumed it has access to the global instance of this class and I need to find a way to call methods of this instance. Please don't ask what I have been smoking, I just have to make it ad hoc.

  I am displaying a Form from one process by passing the Show method a window handle from another process. I only want this new Form to display above the passed Form, like a MessageBox. However, this newly launched Form appears above other application windows, despite: Setting Process.WindowStyle.Hidden to the Form-displaying process Overriding the ShowWithoutActivation and CreateParams properties of the Form. Making sure Form.TopMost is not true I have checked that the window handle is valid from the second process. Focus is not stolen, however.   Lets say that I have a database structure with three tables that look like this: items - item_id - item_handle attributes - attribute_id - attribute_name item_attributes - item_attribute_id - item_id - attribute_id - attribute_value I would like to be able to do this in SQLAlchemy: item = Item('item1') item.foo = 'bar' session.add(item) session.commit() item1 = session.query(Item).filter_by(handle='item1').one() print item1.foo # => 'bar' I'm new to SQLAlchemy and I found this in the documentation (http://www.sqlalchemy.org/docs/05/mappers.html#mapping-a-class-against-multiple-tables): j = join(items, item_attributes, items.c.item_id == item_attributes.c.item_id). \ join(attributes, item_attributes.c.attribute_id == attributes.c.attribute_id) mapper(Item, j, properties={ 'item_id': [items.c.item_id, item_attributes.c.item_id], 'attribute_id': [item_attributes.c.attribute_id, attributes.c.attribute_id], }) It only adds item_id and attribute_id to Item and its not possible to add attributes to Item object. Is what I'm trying to achieve possible with SQLAlchemy? Is there a better way to structure the database to get the same behaviour of "dynamic columns"?

In onResume, I want to be able to change the properties of the ImageButton with something like: @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); ib.setImageURI(selectedImageUri); } //END onResume But onResume doesn't have access to the ib ImageButton object. If this were a variable, I'd simple make it a class variable, but Android does not allow you to define View object in the class. Any suggestions on how to do this?

• Updating Versioned .NET Assembly References

  I have a C++/CLI project that needs to reference a .NET assembly. I've done so by going into the project properties and clicking "Add New Reference", and browsing to the assembly location (it's not part of the solution, so I cannot create a project-to-project reference, and the .NET assembly is not in the GAC so it isn't in the .NET tab when viewing the references to add) When the .NET assembly is updated (that is, since it is versioned, it will increment its version number daily), the C++/CLI project fails to compile because it is still referencing the older version. The workaround I've been doing is deleting the .NET reference and adding it back in, but this is not feasible. How do I have it recognize the newer assembly?? Note: The older assembly is replaced with the newer one, so it is in the same location, but doesn't know that it should use the newer version.

  Hello, I would like to control how linq querries my database programaticaly. For instance, I'd like to query the column X, column Y, or column Z, depending on some conditions. First of all, I've created an array of all the properties inside my class called myPropertyInfo. Type MyType = (typeOf(MyClass)); PropertyInfo[] myPropertyInfo = myType.GetProperties( BindingFlags.Public|BindingFlags.Instance); The myPropertyInfo array allows me to access each property details (Name, propertyType, etc) through the index*[i]* Now, how can I use the above information to control how linq queries my DB? Here's a sample of a querry I'd like to exploit. var myVar = from tp in db.MyClass select tp.{expression}; Expression using myPropertyInfo[i] to choose which property(column) to query. I'm not sure if that's the way of doing it, but if there's another way to do so, I'll be glad to learn. Thanks for helping.
