  • SQL using sum to count results of multiple subqueries

    - by asdas
I have a table with 2 columns: integer and var char. I am given only the integer values but need to do work on the var char (string) values. Given an integer, and a list of other integers (no overlap), I want to find the string for that single integer. Then I want to take that string and do the INSTR command with that string, and all the other strings for all the other integers. Then I want the sum of all the INSTR so the result is one number. So lets say I have int x, and list y=[y0, y1, y2]. I want to do 3 INSTR commands like SUM(INSTR(string for x, string for y0), INSTR(string for x, string for y1), INSTR(string for x, string for y2)) I think im going in the wrong direction, this is what I have. Im not good with sub queries. SELECT SUM ( SELECT INSTR ( SELECT string FROM pages WHERE int=? LIMIT 1, ( SELECT string FROM pages WHERE id=? OR id=? OR id=? LIMIT 3 ) ) )

  • When does a query/subquery return a NULL and when no value at all?

    - by AspOnMyNet
    a) If a query/subquery doesn’t find any matching rows, then it either returns NULL or no value at all, thus not even a NULL value. Based on what criteria does a query/subquery return a NULL and when doesn’t it return any results, not even a NULL value? b) I assume a scalar subquery will always return NULL, when no matching rows are found? I assume most-outer scalar query also returns NULL if no rows are found? c) SELECT FirstName, LastName, YEAR(BirthDate) FROM Persons WHERE YEAR(BirthDate) IN (SELECT YearReleased FROM Albums); If subquery finds no results, is then a WHERE clause of an outer query translated into WHERE YEAR(BirthDate) IN (null); ? If instead WHERE clause is translated into WHERE YEAR(BirthDate) IN(); then shouldn’t that be an error condition, since how can YEAR(BirthDate) value be compared to nothing? thanx

  • MySQL/SQL: Update with correlated subquery from the updated table itself

    - by Roee Adler
I have a generic question that I will try to explain using an example. Say I have a table with the fields: "id", "name", "category", "appearances" and "ratio" The idea is that I have several items, each related to a single category and "appears" several times. The ratio field should include the percentage of each item's appearances out of the total number of appearances of items in the category. In pseudo-code what I need is the following: For each category find the total sum of appearances for items related to it. For example it can be done with (select sum("appearances") from table group by category) For each item set the ratio value as the item's appearances divided by the sum found for the category above Now I'm trying to achieve this with a single update query, but can't seem to do it. What I thought I should do is: update Table T set T.ratio = T.appearances / ( select sum(S.appearances) from Table S where S.id = T.id ) But MySQL does not accept the alias T in the update column, and I did not find other ways of achieving this. Any ideas?

  • Classic ASP Site Throwing Date Conversion Error After Moving Servers?

    - by leen3o
I am moving an old store from a Win2003 IIS6 server to a Win2008 IIS7 server, moved everything across including database. The front end seems to work just fine, but when I login it has to do pull in data based on date ranges and now from no where I am getting this error? The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value Any ideas why this would do this on the new server and NOT on the old one? No code has changed and the DB is a backup of the one from the old server??

  • Parameter passing Vs Table Valued Parameters Vs XML to SQL 2008 from .Net Application

    - by Harryboy
As We are working on a asp .net project there three ways one can update data into database when there are multiple rows updation / insertion required Let's assume we need to update employee education detail (which could be 1,3,5 or 10 records) Method to Update Data Pass value as parameter (Traditional approach), If 10 records are there then 10 round trip required Pass data as xml and write logic inside your stored procedure to get that data from xml and update the table (only single roundtrip required) Use Table valued parameters (only single roundtrip required) Note : Data is available as List, so i need to convert it to xml or any other format if i need to pass. There are no. of places in entire application we need to update data in bulk (or multiple records) I just need your suggestions that Which method will be faster (please mention if there are some other overheads) Manageability or testability concern with any approach Any other bottleneck or issue with any of the approach (Serialization /Deserialization concern or limit on size of the data passing) Any other method you suggest for same operations Thanks

  • sql select puzzle: remove children when parent is filtered out

    - by knicnak32
I have a table essentially: name has_children parent_id row_id values0.....valuesn parent 1 1 1 children 0 1 2 children 0 1 3 parent 0 4 4 parent 1 5 5 children 0 5 6 children 0 5 7 the values for the children can be different than the values for the parent. i want some selects/joins that will filter the table on a value column (i.e. 10) and will return the parent (even if false for the filter) if one of it's children is true for the filter. acceptable return: parent=true all children=false, return just parent parent=false >=1 children=true, return parent and one non-filtered child i'm sure this has been thought about before but i don't have the faintest idea how to phrase the question to find a solution.

  • LINQ to SQL: making a "double IN" query crashes

    - by Alex
I need to do the following thing: var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t1 in DB.Table1 where t1.Date >= DataTime. Now select t1.ID).Contains(c.ID) && (from t2 in DB.Table2 where t2.Date >= DataTime. Now select t2.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a It doesn't want to run. I get the following error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. But when I try to run var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t1 in DB.Table1 where t1.Date >= DataTime. Now select t1.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a OR var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t2 in DB.Table2 where t2.Date = DataTime. Now select t2.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a It works! I'm sure that there both IN queries contain some customers ids.

  • SQL Server 2008 Dead lock issue

    - by user173552
I got into a deadlock issue where I am struggling find the root-cause...The Deadlock graph suggests that an UPDATE statement became the victim over a SELECT statement... What puzzles me is that the UPDATE statement is trying to acquire an index on some other table that is never referred in update statement... This is how my UPDATE statement looks like... UPDATE Table set col1 = @P1 where col2 = @P2 This statement acquired a X lock on the col2 index, but also tries to acquire an index on a column defined in some other table that is no way related to the UPDATE statement... And the SELECT statement that won the deadlock situation had nothing to do with the table or index in the update statement but tried to acquire an index on the table in UPDATE statement. eventually causing the DEADLOCK.

  • Better way to summarize data about stop times?

    - by Vimvq1987
    This question is close to this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2947963/find-the-period-of-over-speed Here's my table: Longtitude Latitude Velocity Time 102 401 40 2010-06-01 10:22:34.000 103 403 50 2010-06-01 10:40:00.000 104 405 0 2010-06-01 11:00:03.000 104 405 0 2010-06-01 11:10:05.000 105 406 35 2010-06-01 11:15:30.000 106 403 60 2010-06-01 11:20:00.000 108 404 70 2010-06-01 11:30:05.000 109 405 0 2010-06-01 11:35:00.000 109 405 0 2010-06-01 11:40:00.000 105 407 40 2010-06-01 11:50:00.000 104 406 30 2010-06-01 12:00:00.000 101 409 50 2010-06-01 12:05:30.000 104 405 0 2010-06-01 11:05:30.000 I want to summarize times when vehicle had stopped (velocity = 0), include: it had stopped since "when" to "when" in how much minutes, how many times it stopped and how much time it stopped. I wrote this query to do it: select longtitude, latitude, MIN(time), MAX(time), DATEDIFF(minute, MIN(Time), MAX(time)) as Timespan from table_1 where velocity = 0 group by longtitude,latitude select DATEDIFF(minute, MIN(Time), MAX(time)) as minute into #temp3 from table_1 where velocity = 0 group by longtitude,latitude select COUNT(*) as [number]from #temp select SUM(minute) as [totaltime] from #temp3 drop table #temp This query return: longtitude latitude (No column name) (No column name) Timespan 104 405 2010-06-01 11:00:03.000 2010-06-01 11:10:05.000 10 109 405 2010-06-01 11:35:00.000 2010-06-01 11:40:00.000 5 number 2 totaltime 15 You can see, it works fine, but I really don't like the #temp table. Is there anyway to query this without use a temp table? Thank you.

  • SQL conditional Pivot

    - by Coov
Yes, this is another Pivot question... I've read through nearly all the previous questions and I can't seem to hack together a query that does what I need. Here is what my table looks like: FirmName Account Balance Pmt Revolving Installment Mortgage Amex 12345 10000 2000 1 0 0 Discover 54321 20000 4000 1 0 0 Chase 13579 100000 1500 0 0 1 Wells Fargo 2468 40000 900 0 1 0 The last three bit columns (Revolving, Installment, & Mortgage) dictate how the columns should be rolled up into a type. Each result requires three columns based on the type and its row count. The outcome should be one row with many columns. Here is what the result should look like: Revolving1_Firm Revolving1_Balance Revolving1_Pmt Revolving2_Firm Revolving2_Balance Revolving2_Pmt Realestate1_Firm Realestate1_Balance Realestate1_Pmt Vehicle1_Firm Vehicle1_Balance Vehicle1_Pmt Amex 10000 2000 Discover 20000 4000 Chase 100000 1500 Wells Fargo 40000 900 How do you pivot based on the bit fields (Revolving, Installment, & Mortgage) and retain the proper count so that that each column gets count # appended to it?

  • FORMSOF Thesaurus in SQL Server

    - by Coolcoder
Has anyone done any performance measures with this in terms of speed where there is a high number of substitutes for any given word. For instance, I want to use this to store common misspellings; expecting to have 4-10 variations of a word. <expansion> administration administraton aministraton </expansion> When you run a fulltext search, how does performance degrade with that number of variations? for instance, I assume it has to do a separate fulltext search performing an OR? Also, having say 20/30K entries in the Thesaurus xml file - does this impact performance?

  • SQL syntax problem (multiple selects)

    - by user279521
I am having problems retrieving accurate data values with my stored proc query below: CREATE PROCEDURE usp_InvoiceErrorLog @RecID int AS DECLARE @ErrorString as varchar(1000), @ErrorCode as int; Select @ErrorCode = ErrorCode from tbl_AcctRecv_WebRpt Where RecID = @RecID; IF NOT(@ErrorCode = NULL) Begin Select @ErrorString = ErrorDesc from tbl_ErrDesc Where ErrorCode = @ErrorCode End Select RecID, VendorNum, VendorName, InvNum, InvTotal, (SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(11), InvDate, 106) AS [DD MON YYYY]) As InvDate, TicketRequestor, ErrorCode, @ErrorString as ErrorDesc from tbl_AcctRecv_WebRpt Where RecID = @RecID The ErrorDesc column (in the final select statement at the bottom) returns a NULL value, when it should return a valid string data. Any ideas?

  • MSSQL 2000 Stored Procedure to Split Shift Times

    - by JClaspill
I am being asked to alter a system to include the ability to have pay differentials based on hours worked. The old method included a stored procedure (MSSQL2000 db) that did the basics, but simply knows the start and end of every shift. So, this is the information I start with: EMPLOYEE | TYPE | HOURS | INSTAMP | OUTSTAMP Dave | Hourly | 8.643055 | 2011-01-08 07:57:35.557 | 2011-01-08 16:36:10.120 And I need to turn that into something like: EMPLOYEE | TYPE | HOURS | INSTAMP | OUTSTAMP Dave | Hourly | 4.00 | 2011-01-08 08:00:00.000 | 2011-01-08 12:00:00.000 Dave | ShiftDiff1 | 4.50 | 2011-01-08 12:00:00.000 | 2011-01-08 16:30:00.000 The ShiftDiff's range from hours to certain days, to a combo of both. Should I try to make the SQL2000 SP do this or pass the info back to my ASP.NET(C#) app and let it handle it, then send back?

  • SQL Query Math Gymnastics

    - by keruilin
I have two tables of concern here: users and race_weeks. User has many race_weeks, and race_week belongs to User. Therefore, user_id is a fk in the race_weeks table. I need to perform some challenging math on fields in the race_weeks table in order to return users with the most all-time points. Here are the fields that we need to manipulate in the race_weeks table. races_won (int) races_lost (int) races_tied (int) points_won (int, pos or neg) recordable_type(varchar, Robots can race, but we're only concerned about type 'User') Just so that you fully understand the business logic at work here, over the course of a week a user can participate in many races. The race_week record represents the summary results of the user's races for that week. A user is considered active for the week if races_won, races_lost, or races_tied is greater than 0. Otherwise the user is inactive. So here's what we need to do in our query in order to return users with the most points won (actually net_points_won): Calculate each user's net_points_won (not a field in the DB). To calculate net_points, you take (1000 * count_of_active_weeks) - sum(points__won). (Why 1000? Just imagine that every week the user is spotted a 1000 points to compete and enter races. We want to factor-out what we spot the user because the user could enter only one race for the week for 100 points, and be sitting on 900, which we would skew who actually EARNED the most points.) This one is a little convoluted, so let me know if I can clarify further.
