  • Serial port access errors in WINE

    Hello, I have a setup in which I use a USB serial adapter + some application which sends and receives data using that serial usb. But this setup which works on a Windows, or even in a VMWare Virtual windows, does not work under WINE. IT transmits data but i cannot receive data. The cable and the applications are same as in the working and non-working scenarios. I guess The fact that the application works over the USB serial cable just as fine under Virtual Windows(VMware running on linux) by mapping /dev/ttyUSB to the com port, no external software/DLL needed, means it does not need any specific driver. (Am I correct in this assumption that application doesnt need any driver?) (I also tried with a different setup(different USB serial adapter + different application under WINE, but even that does not work under WINE, but it works fine under WIndows/Virtual Windows) How can I get it working under WINE? Any pointers appreciated.

    I'm investigating smart pointers with "shared" functionality for Windows CE and Mobile, where the VS 2008 tr1 std::shared_ptr cannot be used (due to linkage to a v.9 dll not present on CE, obviously, if I understand it correctly). There's a semi-old MSDN Magazine article with sources from a Microsoftie (Eric Niebler): Achieve More Reliable Resource Management with Our Custom C++ Classes. The reasoning, design and implementation of his shared_any looks solid, but I'm wondering if anyone ever actually tested the lot on any platform (not necessarily WinCe/WM)?

  • How can private IPV4 addresses get past iptables NAT (tcp RST,FIN)

    I've got a router performing simple NAT translation using iptables iptables -t nat -o -j MASQUERADE This works fine almost all of the time except for one particular case where some TCP RST and FIN packets are leaving the router un-NAT'd. In this scenario I setup 1 or 2 client computers streaming Flash video (eg www.nasa.gov/ntv) At the router I then tear down and re-establish the public interface (which is a modem) As expected the Flash streams stall out. After the connection is re-established and I try to refresh the Flash pages, I see some TCP RST and [FIN,ACK] packets leaving the public interface (I assume as Flash attempts to recover its stream). I don't know how these packets can leave the router non-NAT'd

  • Flash AS3 and XML: way to fix line breaks in htmlText that uses <b> tags in the xml?

    I'm importing text in from an xml file and i'm using htmlText to try to keep some styling with tags. I have both the regular and bold face font embedded, and the bolding works fine. The problem is that it ads spaces around the words in bold like a paragraph indent and then makes a line-break after them. What's going on, is there a way to fix? fromxmlText.htmlText = theXML.contenttext; If I pull the text in from a txt file it will work fine, but taking it out of an xml file causing funky formatting. lil' help?

  • Work around for yahoo mail slowness (using 100% cpu)

    My yahoo mail is very slow sometimes. When it is, I notice that IE8 is using 100% cpu. Using sysinternals process explorer I discovered the thread using all the cpu in IE8 has Flash in the stackwalk. I upgraded flash from 9 to 10, but the problem persists. I'm about to edit hosts to block the flash content by redirecting the yahoo and ad click dns entries. Is there some easier way to get flash to behave? The fix for the long run will be switching to gmail.

  • Best RAID setup for multimedia fileserver?

    I'm building a fileserver for my small office. We do film and multimedia design. Only 3 clients connected. The server is primarily for local access to graphic assets and video files. I'm looking for advice on hardware and software required. Particularly for the RAID. I have the following objectives: A) merged capacity I'd like all other systems to access the data as a single mapped network drive that has an initial capacity of 10 TB. So perhaps 5x 2TB drives (plus mirror drives for redundancy). B) easy way to increase capacity Thinking long term, I'd like to 'easily' add more drives to the array for a potential two or three fold increase in capacity. So theoretically it could get upto a 30 TB raid array consisting of maybe 15x 2 TB drives of capacity (plus mirror drives for redundancy). C) maximum fault tolerance I want at least 1 mirror drive per capacity drive (in laymen's terms). So if I start with 10 TB / 5x 2TB of capacity, I suppose I would need another another 5x 2TB drives to be mirrors. So 10 drives total. But I'd also like potential for even more redundancy; with upto 2 additional mirrors per 'capacity drive' (and to be able to add them to the array anytime with ease). D) easy way to monitor drive health I'd like an intuitive interface for managing the raid and monitoring drive health The other systems accessing this network drive will be running Windows, but also the odd Ubuntu and MacOS system as well. Are these objectives attainable? What type of RAID setup do you recommend? What hardware will be required? Also what OS do you think this system should be running? Does it really matter? I'm no network admin - just a long time Windoze user, without much Linux experience. That said, I'm not opposed to a Linux solution if it's easy enough and more practical than a Windows OS for this server. Or maybe something such as Openfiler. Budget should hit the sweet spot for value and performance (hence my preference to use 2TB drives). The biggest focus is storage; aside from that the system just needs to keep the drives running optimally with perhaps 2 or 3 clients accessing / writing files at any given time.   • jwplayer embedded with recent flash with html5 back end cant hide controls or add autoplay and loop

    Hey all, After the unfortunate realization that Firefox is just not going to play nice with an embedded HTML5 video with my server set up, I've decided to go the JW Player route, since it's compatible with iPads and iPhones. I can get the file to show up on my page, but it's big and heavy. I would like for it to be just the video, no controls. Autoplay and on loop. Can you help me out?   • HP Proliant ML115 G5 - Boot order lost after reboot

    I have one HP Proliant ML 115 G5 (AMD) with the latest BIOS (07-06-2009) and recently I've installed an USB disk. This is a common problem on old Proliant servers. When you plug the USB disk, BIOS boot order changes and tries to boot via USB. So, I'll change the BIOS settings and make the SATA disk the default boot device. The problem is, when I need to unplug the usb disk, and plug it again later. I can't be always changing the BIOS settings... How can one solve this for ever?!?!

  • Resizing mysterious partition written by DDing an ISO file

    I downloaded clonezilla and then wrote it to a USB flash drive with this: dd if=clonezilla.iso of=/dev/sdb I've confirmed that the system boots and clonezilla runs from the flash drive. I want to store a clonezilla backup on the same flash drive clonezilla is running on, but I tried it and ran out of space, so I started looking at how to resize the mysterious partition type that was generated from the ISO. fdisk -l /dev/sdb .... Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 111 113664 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS .... I've tried using ntfsresize from the Debian ntfsprogs package. I'm trying gparted next, but thought I'd ask here if anyone knows a neat way to resize a partition created on flash from a liveCD image. Thanks in advance Jon ps. Assume Debian 6 please.

  • Installing Linux from External Card Reader

    I have this problem. I was experimenting if I could use a memory card (SDHC) as an USB drive for all intents and purposes, and when I put the card in an USB card reader, I can use it just like regular USB stick and it also shows up in the BBS popup menu as an USB stick. When I tried to create an installation media out of it like this: sudo dd if=/path/to/image of=/dev/sdb And tried to boot from it, simply nothing happened. Cursor blinked a couple times, and jumped to the GRUB of my pre-existing GNU/Linux installation. What am I missing here? Is this not doable? I tried this with Xubuntu 12.04 and ArchLinux, by the way. I have also tried UNetBootIn instead of dd. Nothing happened differently.

    My question is very basic in nature. Is the mount point for external media (like USB) always /media? Because in a Debian system, if I plug in any USB device that goes to the /media folder. So is it the case with all the other Linux flavors like Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. If a USB device is automatically mounted will it always go to the /media directory?

  • Security of BitLocker with no PIN from WinPE?

    Say you have a computer with the system drive encrypted by BitLocker and you're not using a PIN so the computer will boot up unattended. What happens if an attacker boots the system up into the Windows Preinstallation Environment? Will they have access to the encrypted drive? Does it change if you have a TPM vs. using only a USB startup key? What I'm trying to determine is whether the TPM / USB startup key is usable without booting from the original operating system. In other words, if you're using a USB startup key and the machine is rebooted normally then the data would still be protected unless an attacker was able to log in. But what if the hacker just boots the server into a Windows Preinstallation Environment with the USB startup key plugged in? Would they then have access to the data? Or would that require the recovery key? Ideally the recovery key would be required when booted like this, but I haven't seen this documented anywhere.

  • Expresscard Not Detected in PCI-E Adapter

    I'm trying to put an expresscard TV tuner (Avermedia HC82) into my HTPC using this expresscard to PCI-E adapter. I've verified that the tuner works fine in my laptop. The motherboard is a Biostar TF7050-M2. When I install it and turn it on, the light on the back of the adapter comes on fine (there are two indicator lights on the back to show if it is using PCI-E or USB communication, USB communication goes through a USB cable connected between the card and a header on the motherboard) showing that it is working in PCI-E mode. However, the device is never detected in Windows 7 Professional x64. The auto detect never happens, it doesn't show up in the device manager, and I can have it rescan for new hardware and nothing is found. I tested the whole setup (tuner + adapter) in another PC (also using Win 7 Pro x64) and it worked fine. I also tried: Plugging the adapter in to the PCI-E x16 slot on the motherboard (I verified first that the x16 slot worked by installing a video card in it) Booting into safe mode and rescanning Updating the chipset drivers Installing the tuner drivers first Using a different USB cable, plugged in to one of the known good ports on the back of the board Trying it without the USB cable plugged in Removing the other PCI cards that were installed on the board Looking through the BIOS for any setting that might be disabling it somehow to no avail. I'm at a loss for what else to try. I really don't want to RMA it (the shipping back to newegg will be almost as much as it cost to buy in the first place. Any ideas?

  • Getting around the FAT32 4GB file size limit

    I recently purchased a 32GB USB 3 stick that was formatted FAT32. I plugged it into my computer and attempted to copy a film onto it, the file was over 4GB however and it would not let me copy the file across because of the 4GB file size limit imposed by FAT32. After some googling I found that I could format my USB stick to have an exFAT format which would mean I could put files onto the stick greater than 4GB in size and the drive would work on both my Mac and my PC. The problem with this solution is that my PS3 cannot detect the USB stick when it is formatted with exFAT. I would like to know if there is a way I can have my USB stick formatted so it can have files greater than 4 GB and work on my PC, Mac and PS3.

  • Is there an encoding method that is mutual to flash and php?

    I'm base64 encoding a JPG in AS3 and passing it to PHP where it would be decoded. It appears that AS3's encodeToBase64String() function and and PHP's base64_decode() function do not use the same algorithm. Is there a library or API for either language that would allow it to interface with the other? Alternatively, does anyone even know what PHP's default base64 map is? My Google searching is not yielding results.
