• Random BSOD ntoskrnl.exe (Windows 7)

  I get BSOD at random times and have been for a while now on my Windows 7 machine. It is really new, and I already tried wiping the graphic card drivers and installing them again (making sure that they are of course up to date). I get a variety of bug check strings on a few different drivers. The single file that is in all of my BSODs is ntoskrnl.exe Bug Check Strings - SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA I would rather not resort to getting a completely new PC, as I have already thrown a lot of money on my current one. • Windows Sharing requires password

  I have 3 machines on my local network Machine A , Machine B and Machine C OS on all machines is : Windows 7 64bit. Sharing Permissions on all machines : Everyone ( Read/Write ) no domain. Sharing folder name : project Machine A is sharing folder over the network without password. Machine B is sharing folder over the network without password. Machine C is sharing folder over the network without password. Machine A can normally access B and C without password required. Machine B can normally access A and C without password required Machine C can normally access Machine B without password. My problem is *Machine C* requires a password when it access Machine A also the shared folder in Machine A don't have password protected and Machine B can access Machine A without a password ! How can i solve the problem .?

• Windows 7 Extend C Volume to Unallocated Space

  a while back I installed Ubuntu and then later uninstalled it by I think deleting the partitions and recovering the windows 7 boot loader. I am not that experienced with partitioning yet. As you can see here there are two partitions that are now unallocated. The 9gb one is a recovery or something that came with the computer. How can I extend my C partition to use both of those? I do not want to have that much storage just wasted sitting there.   what route to add to windows so that while using openvpn i have internet connectivity, but if openvpn tunnel collapses then my computer has no routes to use and so has no connectivity. My computer normally needs the default route 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.254. I just need a route that only allowed traffic destined for the openvpn server ip. The traffic has to go through 192.168.1.254 however as that is my home networks internet gateway router thingy. Thanks.

• Configure a warning when starting an application on Windows

  I have some software that's licensed to be used on one computer at a time. It connects to a service and retrieves data from that service. If I start the application on a second computer then the first computer's data connection is terminated. There are times when I'll be running the software on Computer1 and it's doing some vital work with its data collection etc. and I'll forget that it's running there and start it on Computer2 causing Computer1's data connection to terminate etc. What I want to do is configure a warning on Computer2 so that each time I start this application it pops up a dialog box and says "Hey, this software might be running on another computer, are you sure you want to start it here?" I'm using Windows 7 on Computer2. Is there anyway for me to accomplish this task?

• Dark Windows Themes

  I spend all day staring at computer screens. I have changed my Visual Studio theme to a dark theme, and find it much easier on the eyes. I'd like to change the rest of windows. Unfortunately, the only themes installed by default that are dark, are high contrast. Which is NOT what I am going for here. I can't seem to find an official dark theme, that isn't high contrast. I've found dynamic black, which is a good example of what I'm looking for, but it's not an official theme. Is there anything out there?

• Unistalled C++ Redistributables on Windows Vista

  Windows Vista Service Pack2 32 bit I uninstalled C++ re-distrubutables (was not aware they are necessary for some applications to run) and I am facing error Cannot start application because the side-by-side configuration is not correct when i start applications like Avast, Revo Uninstaller etc. I came across this page. But the downloaded vcredist_86.exe doesn't seem to do much. It extracts itself and that's it nothing after that. No error nothing. I just finished installing 300+ MB updates on my system, so i don't want to use the System Restore option [And, I don't know which Restore Point to revert to]. Any other way to get this done?

• Windows command FOR /F isn't working?

  I'm trying to use the FOR command in Windows XP's command line. I have a file temp.txt with 3 lines: temp1 temp2 temp3 And I'm typing the following command at the prompt: for /F %p in (temp.txt) do echo Testing %p Nothing comes back. If I remove the /F parameter, the output is Testing temp.txt. As far as I can determine, I'm using the command exactly as it is documented by Microsoft. I've checked my registry to make sure Command Extensions are on, and even started a new shell with cmd /e:on to be doubly sure. What am I doing wrong? Yes, I was doing something wrong. The file temp.txt wasn't created from scratch, I just edited it to put in my test content. Unfortunately when I created the file the first time, I saved it with a UTF-8 marker at the front. Recreating the file as plain text solved the problem.

• cygwin ssh shortcut on windows desktop

  I have multiple servers that I need to remote into. I prefer Cygwin over Putty to do so. Anyhows - the process of opening my cool Mintty window and then typing the following commands takes too long. PS - I am using a "key" authentication to these servers. First, I double Click Cygwin Terminal shortcut from my windows desktop. Then once the terminal session has booted up, from the command prompt I type the following - $ eval `ssh-agent` $ ssh-add $ ssh <username>@<servername> Please keep in mind that my 'servername' is variable. In fact I have about 10 different server names that could potentially be inserted there - Hence my need for 10 different shortcuts. I would prefer to double click on something from my desktop that will fire up my Mintty and automatically execute the above bash shell commands. Does anyone have or can recommend a nice/elegant solution to do this?

• Control Windows 8 with a tablet

  It seems much of Windows 8 is based on the idea that it will be running on tablets, and touch screen PCs. I like this, but I don't have a W89 tablet, or a touch PC yet. I'm running W8 on a laptop, and am wondering if there's any way of using my iPad2 as a touch interface with metro? Or another options that'd be nice is if there's a input device similar to Apple's "Magic Trackpad" that would allow me to use hand gestures instead of a mouse cursor when in metro apps. I've seen some cool videos of MS Smart Glass and it would seem that the capabilities are there. But it may just be too early on to do this? I'm not sure.

  I just installed Windows 7 pro x64 from Dreamspark (MSDNAA). But i can't figure out how to configure it. 1/ When I want to acces some folders a pop up show up and tells me "that I need administrator acces to do it" I click the "continue" button and I can go inside the folder. What was even the point in showing me this pop up? how can I remove it? 2/ In some folder when I do a right clic I can only create a new folder, not a new text file, not a rar, nothing. In the same folder I also cannot extract RAR (by doing right clic, extract here) Any Idea how to get back full control? Thanks.

• Hybrid HDD/SSD Volume Windows

  Is it possible to create a hybrid drive-like experience using an ssd and a hdd? In theory, frequently used files would be stored on the faster ssd, and larger/less used would be moved to the hdd. I know you can create shared volumes in windows, but the speed differences would create some issues I would assume, and it doesn't have drive preference for what gets stored on what drive. Any programs/info/advice would be great! Thanks! (PS. I saw this question, but it was asked three years ago and some solutions have probably changed)

• Multiple desktops in Windows

  I'm running a program that uses WatiN to automate file uploads to different websites. I currently run it on a machine that I remote into via the standard Remote Desktop Connection in Windows - once I start an upload, I go ahead and continue using my local machine. Soon, I'll be needing to run it locally. The problem is that it requires focus (which is unavoidable due to WatiN utilizing SendKeys) and I of course don't want to render my machine useless while it runs. So, my question: Is there any way to emulate the multiple desktops/workspaces that have been in many Linux distros for some time? I tried VirtuaWin to no avail. Alternatively, is there a way to remote into a machine from itself? Or is there some other means of creating a separate session on the same machine that does not steal focus? Running Linux is not an option, and a VM would be overkill.

• Opening a port to make a connection in Windows 7 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: trouble with opening a port to make a connection I have watched a video on how to open my ports in Windows 7. I followed the example by going to my "firewall" in "advanced settings" and I made new rules in "inbound rules" and in "outbound rules". I chose to allow connections to all ports, but if I try it with canyouseeme, then it says I can't find the configured port. Maybe it is because the site is wrong, but I don't really believe so. Could someone tell me how I open my ports so that I can connect to them and others to connect to them via the internet (if they have my ip-adress of course)?

  What steps would you take to make a windows xp machine appear that it hasn't been logged on to since some past date. Not to a forensic level here, just to a casual inspection. • Windows 7 Desktop slideshow

  I have my windows 7 (Home Professional if it matters) set to automatically change the background every 20 minutes with the source of the slideshow as a folder in the Pictures library. Recently, the slideshow has not been functioning. The pictures do not change while the computer is on; they only seem to change when it is shut down (i.e. there is a different desktop on each boot), or about 50% of the time when waking the computer from hibernation. I've changed the time settings, the folder location on the drive, and made sure to disable all programs that tweak the desktop with no luck. Any thoughts?

  The new Task Manager has a great UI in windows 8, however, there are some discrepancies in the data I can not account for: Machine: 8 GB of total ram. (This is a physical machine, not a virtual) The processes tab shows 45% of Memory utilized. The listed process do not add up to 3.5 GB of RAM, but instead add up to 0.948 GB. There is no "processes for all users" option. The performance Tab Shows: In use : 3.6 GB Available: 4.4 GB Committed : 4.1 /9.2 GB Cached: 3.7 GB Paged Pool: 376 MB Non-paged pool: 135 MB My reading of this says I have ALOT of "cloaked" processes running some where eating my ram. How do I interpret this data and how do I verify it?

  so I have a mac which I have files on. I put in a GUID formatted usb stick and dropped some files on to it. took the stick and plugged in to my netbook with win7. In Devices & Printers it shows up. It also appears in "safely remove hardware". no actual letter or device when i search for it in other ways. Question - how do I access the files of my GUID usb stick on my windows 7 netbook? thanks

  I installed windows 8's developer preview version dual boot with win 7 ultimate. I put my win 8's partition to 11 GB (almost), but now when I try to uninstall the win 8 it dont allow me to uninstall it saying no enough space. What to do ?? Then I try to login to win 7 and increase the size of the partition of win 8. This also is not possible. Please help me with it. I want to uninstall it but how and what to do?

• After installing Windows 7, there're lines on the screen

  Hi, I've just installed Windows 7 on my Dell machine. Everything works fine except that there are one or two lines on the screen. The line is so random and I am sure that it's now the monitor problem. The graphic card is NVidia GeForce 7600. I replaced the default driver with the driver from the manufacturer and it didn't help. When I change screen setting, the line goes away for a while and it comes back in different location. Sometimes an app window has the line and if I move the window the line follows with the window. To be perfectly honest – I’m more interested in attending than presenting as the sessions and speaker line up look great. But in the middle of all that I will be doing the following (rather cheekily named) session: Looking at the Clouds through dirty Windows Many developers assume that the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform for Cloud Computing is only relevant if you develop solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. The reality is somewhat different. In the same way that developers can build great applications on Windows Server using a variety of programming languages, developers can do the same for Azure. Java, Tomcat, PHP, Ruby, Python, MySQL and more all work great on Azure. In this session we will take a lap around the services offered by the Azure PaaS and demonstrate just how easy it is to build and deploy applications built in .NET and other technologies.   There were a lot of announcements made during the keynote at MIX10 today, most notable were the releases of Silverlight 4 RC, Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010, Expression Blend 4 Beta and the Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools.  I was glad to see that developers will be able to use Silverlight to create awesome applications for Windows Phone 7 so we can reuse our WPF and Silverlight skills to target mobile devices! • Windows being placed on wrong monitor

  I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04x64 (ATI Radeon HD4770 with open source drivers) and I am having trouble getting windows to appear on the right screen. Yesterday I plugged in my secondary monitor and it worked perfectly out of the box, except that for some reason, compiz wants to place windows on the secondary monitor rather than the first. This is a problem because I don't use the secondary monitor 100% of the time, and I don't want windows being placed on it when it is off. Also, it's only some windows that are getting placed there. For example, the "Edit Connections" window from the networking menu is always placed off my primary screen. There are a number of other windows that do the same. While some, like nautilus, always appear on the proper monitor. I played around with Compiz Config Settings Manager and found that if I disable the "Place Windows" plugin, all of the windows appear on the proper monitor -- except that they are placed underneath the Unity Panel, so I have to alt-drag them out each time in order to use them. With out without that plugin, I can't seem to get a sensible setup. The windows are supposed to appear only on the active display, but for some reason Compiz doesn't want to do that with some windows. Does anyone know a fix for this? I'd rather not have to disable and re-enable my monitor every single time I use it...
