• Twin Cities Code Camp 8 Retrospective

  I just got back (a few hours ago) from Minneapolis, where I was speaking at the Twin Cities Code Camp 8. I’d never been to a Twin Cities Code Camp, and I have always heard such great things, so I submitted and got accepted to speak. The conference (what I got to see) was great. My talk was pretty short on people, but there are many reasons for that. First, I spoke opposite Donn Felker (speaking about developing for Android) and Keith Dahlby (speaking about Dynamic .NET). So of course, my talk is going to be empty. How could I compete with that? Plus, my talk was about software process improvement, specifically about how our process has evolved. Maybe not the smartest idea to submit to talk about software process at a developer’s conference. The people who DID attend however, seemed to really enjoy the talk. There was good interaction and good, thoughtful questions. So the attendees seemed engaged. I actually did get a chance to go to one session. I went and saw Javier Lozano talk about Open source tools for ASP.NET MVC. I am hip-deep in MVC stuff right now and getting up to speed on MVC 2 as well. I learned about MVC Turbine, Javier’s Open Source project. I will definitely be adding it to my MVC arsenal. Thanks Javier! I did forget my AC adapter for my laptop and got a little lost in Minneapolis on my way to get one from MicroCenter Saturday morning, but other than that, it was a great trip. It’s a long drive, but seeing all the guys and getting two Nut & Honey rolls from Roly Poly in Eden Prarie for lunch on Saturday made the trip totally worth it. I look forward to seeing what Jason & Chris come up with for next year! Thanks for having me guys!

• Need help with DNS. Registrar is NS, Web Site at WinHost, Email at eHost

  Need help moving a web site for a client, which I will call ClientABC. The web site is ClientABC.com, which is hosted at Rackspace, with their email hosted at eHost. We are transferring the site from Rackspace to WinHost and are keeping the email hosted at eHost. I would like the transfer to happen with little to no down time for the web site and email (email is most important). Current Config: Client owns domain and registrar is Network Solutions Domain name is managed by VendorX at Rackspace Web site is hosted on Rackspace servers Email is hosted at eHost Post-Move Config: Web site is hosted at WinHost Keep Email at eHost Here is my plan for the transfer: Copy the site files to WinHost and test to assure site is fully functional Set up the MX record in the WinHost account to point to eHost servers Change the DNS in Network Solutions from Rackspace to Winhost Questions: Will this work? What am I missing? Should I expect down time or any issues with email? I understand that there will be a period of time that traffic to the site is handled at both Rackspace and Winhost and that email traffic will be routed through both hosts as well. Will this cause issues? How will I know when the change is fully propagated and that Rackspace is out of the equation and WinHost is handling everything (so I can kill the Rackspace account) Thanks in advance!

• Allowing users to install fonts in Windows 7 (through GPO)

  Hi, This is somewhat related to my previous question, http://serverfault.com/questions/48155/why-do-installed-fonts-disappear-after-reboot. Having got the font install issue sorted out under XP just fine, recently we've got a Windows 7 workstation and I've created a special GPO for it. Initially it was UAC that was demanding administrative access to C:\windows\fonts despite the fact the policy dictates that directory is writable (as is the relevant registry entries, on XP anyway). The issue now though is that when I try to copy a font or hit install it claims that the font "does not appear to be a valid font". This happens with every type of font as well. Is there some new and special consideration when allowing these changes on Windows 7? Any input would be appreciated. Many thanks, Doug

  IASA South East Florida Chapter – February Meeting The topic for our February chapter meeting was Legal Issues in IT. Ms. Kennedy, Intellectual Property Attorney with an active litigation, trademark and copyright practice, presented: How Google, Wal-Mart & Apple Make their Millions – The Secret Ingredient: Intellectual Property This topic initiated great interest and the meeting room at Microsoft Ft. Lauderdale filled up to the last seat. Most Architects, Engineers, and MBA’s are not aware about Intellectual Property, Basic Patent, Trademark, or legal issues related to the web. After clarifying the basic definitions, Ms. Kennedy explained in detail how intellectual property issues could make or break a company. Members had the opportunity at the end of the presentation to ask questions, discuss legal problems, and several members shared their experiences related to Intellectual Property and other IT related issues. If you want to protect your ideas and intellectual property, you have to be aware of the implications and need to take the right steps in order to protect them. All Chapter Members agreed that it was an outstanding and lively presentation. Ms. Kennedy presented high quality content and made participants aware of legal IT issues. • What’s the Difference Between Succession Management and Talent Reviews?

  By Marcie Van Houten Is there a difference or are they pieces of one holistic strategic talent process? And can you have one without the other?  First, let me give a quick definition of each.  Succession planning (or management) is about creating succession slates or talent pools in support of a critical job or position or sets thereof. And then using those plans to help mitigate risk and plan talent needs for the organization.  Talent reviews (known by other names often) are sets of meetings where managers and executives come together to review, discuss and often heatedly debate the merits and potential of their employees, and then place and sometimes calibrate that talent on a performance to potential matrix.  These are some of the most strategic conversations happening in conference rooms across the globe. I speak with a lot of organizations about their practices in this area and the answers to these questions are as varied and nuanced as there are organizations thinking about them.  Some are passionate about their talent review processes and have a very evolved and thoughtful approach.  They really know their people, where their talent is, and the opportunities they plan to offer them.  And to them that is their succession process.  They may never create a slate of named candidates for a job or assign employees to formal talent pools.   On the flip side there are other organizations that create slates and slates and often multiple talent pools to support their strategic positions.  Through these, they are able to mitigate the risk associated with having a key player leave their organization.  And for them, that is their succession process.  Some will start from the lower levels of their organization and roll up their succession plans, while other organizations only cover their top 200 executives and key positions with plans.  And then there are organizations that leverage some of all of these.  Ultimately, the goals are to increase employee engagement, reduce talent-related risk, ensure the right talent is aligned to the strategic initiatives and to drive business value.  The approaches are as unique as the organizations they represent and the business opportunities they are looking to seize upon.   And that's ok.  It's great in fact. Because one thing that is common is the recognition that the need to know your people and align your top talent to the future needs of the organization is mission critical. • Nervous about the "real" world

  I am currently majoring in Computer Science and minoring in mathematics (the minor is embedded in the major). The program has a strong C++ curriculum. We have done some UNIX and assembly language (not fun) and there is C and Java on the way in future classes that I must take. The program I am in did not use the STL, but rather a STL-ish design that was created from the ground up for the program. From what I have read on, the STL and what I have taken are very similar but what I used seemed more user friendly. Some of the programs that I had to write in C++ for assignments include: a password server that utilized hashing of the passwords for security purposes, a router simulator that used a hash table and maps, a maze solver that used depth first search, a tree traveler program that traversed a tree using levelorder, postorder, inorder, selection sort, insertion sort, bit sort, radix sort, merge sort, heap sort, quick sort, topological sort, stacks, queues, priority queues, and my least favorite, red-black trees. All of this was done in three semesters which was just enough time to code them up and turn them in. That being said, if I was told to use a stack to convert an equation to infix notation or something, I would be lost for a few hours. My main concern in writing this is when I graduate and land an interview, what are some of the questions posed to assess my skills? What are some of the most important areas of computer science that are prevalent in the field? I am currently trying to get some ideas of programs I can write in C++ that interest and challenge me to keep learning the language. A sodoku solver came to mind but am lost as to where to start. I apologize for the rant, but I'm just a wee bit nervous about the future. Any tips are appreciated.

• Oracle SQL Developer: Single Object Compare

  There’s a nasty rumor going around that you can’t compare database objects and/or code in Oracle SQL Developer. So let’s put that to bed right now. First, here’s how to compare: PL/SQL to PL/SQL or a SQL statement to another SQL statement So now that that’s settled, why don’t we take a look at how to compare a single table, to another table – whether it’s in the same database or a different database. Database Diff There’s no additional licensing requirement here. If you have SQL Developer, you can use this feature. if you’re going to compare 1 table to another, make sure you ONLY have ‘tables’ checked And then, use this dialog to select your table(s): Move over the object(s) you want to compare over to the right hand side. And now we can move onto the results. The differences, side-by-side, and the script to make B look like A Common lines with differences are highlighted in blue, new lines are highlighted in red. So that’s why they are different, but here’s the script to synch up the differences: Read the script, TEST the script, apply the script. And that’s it. Well, that’s mostly it. • How to assign more then one open action to one file system

  All operating system I use apart form Windows have a “Open with…” options for there Explorer, Finder, whatever. This is very useful as often more then one program can handle a given file extension. With the exception on zip file I generally have not seen such a function on Window. However since there is an exceptions it is possible. The questions I have is: How can a “Open with…” can be archived with windows? Is there perhaps a tool which can do it?

• Apache mod_jk replacing mod_rewrite rules

  We have a slightly complex Apache 2.2 setup in front of a Tomcat 6.0 instance. The main Tomcat webapp is deployed in: /opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT But we also have static content that we update semi-regularly. We didn't want to force a new build and deploy of the webapp, so that's stored separately in folders like: /opt/tomcat/webapps/css /opt/tomcat/webapps/foo /opt/tomcat/webapps/bar To handle this from Apache, we use mod_rewrite and rules look something like the following: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ ROOT/$1 [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://localhost:8080/$1 [P,L] ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/ I now think I might want to start using mod_jk and I have two questions: Is it even worth using mod_jk? I don't need load balancing. Is it even possible to handle the cases I outlined where the static content is referenced as "http://www.example.com/css/foo.css", but we don't know if it's located in the Tomcat webapp or in one of the static folders.

• Modify Okular highlight to automatically copy highlighted text into comment

  Despite what old SE questions state, the PDF software Okular can now write annotations directly to the PDF. This makes it very useful in conjunction with Docear for annotating academic literature. However, Docear imports annotations from the comments, rather than importing from highlighted text. In Okular, when you highlight text it can then be clicked to reveal a comments bubble, which is empty by default. Copying the highlighted text into the resulting bubble allows it to be imported into Docear, but this is laborious. How can I modify the highlight tool to automatically copy the highlighted text into the resulting comment bubble?

• Event-based server-gameloop in a server based game

  I know that this site is full of questions about fixed gameloops and variable gameloops and different types of threading. But I coult find barely nothing that is related to server loops. The server has no screen to draw on. It could just run as fast as possible, but of course this makes no sense. But should it really use single "ticks" and send the updates periodically after each tick and wait for the next "tick" to update its state. Is it applicable to replace the gameloop by multilpe events? Suchs as incoming network traffic or timers? I often heared that a gameloop should be determistic, but does it really matter? For instance, when you play a shooter game against humand players and/or AI you proably would never be ably to repeat the same input twice. Is it a good idea to lose determistic behavior if it is nearly impossible to reprodruce the same input twice? So this question is more or less about whether an strictly event-based gameloop is adviseable or not and what are the pros and cons. I could imagene that an event-based gameloop could perform much faster and smoother, since you don't have bug CPU-spikes during the beginning of a new "tick". The fact that I could not find much about an event-based gameloop for servers leads me to the conclusion that inefficient or too complicated to get a real benefit from it. I'm sure if this is enough to get an idea from what I'm interessted to know, but I hope so.

• Disabling partition just for one OS on multi-boot system

  Hi Regarding to the solution there: http://serverfault.com/questions/36385/how-can-i-mount-a-hard-drive-as-read-only-on-windows-xp I have a system with three partitions. One runs windows 7, one runs windows XP and is for some experimental programming and testing. I don't want to mess up anything, so I am going to disable the windows 7 partition like described on the linked page above from windows XP to protect the operating system. When I do this, is the windows 7 partition only disabled for the running XP os, or is the windows 7 partition rendered unbootable? with best regards

• Configure ASP.NET Application to Read Mapped Network Drive

  Is it possible to configure an ASP.NET application under IIS 7 so it can read files stored in a mapped network drive? I'm not trying to serve up the contents of the drive. I simply need to read the contents within the ASP.NET application. I've searched the Web and haven't really found a solid answer. The questions in my mind are: Is this possible via configuration (i.e. I cannot modify the client code)? If so, what are the step by step instructions. If it is not possible, I'm fine with that. I already know UNC paths work but using them drastically changes the work flow. Thanks! Bobby

• How do I create an ad hoc network in Windows 8?

  For the life of me, I can't figure out how to create an ad hoc wireless network in Windows 8. Here is what happens if I follow the steps from Windows 7: Right click the network icon and click "Network and Sharing Center": Click "Set up a new connection or network": Where is the option to create an ad hoc network? Therefore I have two related questions: Did I miss something? Is it in there somewhere and I just haven't found it yet? If this feature is not available, is there a tool somewhere I can use that provides this capability? Further information: I have an Intel Wireless WiFi 4965 AGN adapter. I tried the Intel PRO wireless tool and it didn't offer an ad hoc option.

• Big Success for the 2012 edition of the Oracle EMEA Cloud CRM Partner Community Forum!

  The 2012 edition of the Oracle EMEA Cloud Partner Community Forum took place on march 28&29 in Madrid. 100 participants from all over Europe had a chance to interact with the Oracle Cloud CRM Product Management team about multiple subjects such as Oracle Cloud CRM and Social Network solutions strategy, RightNow acquisition, Fusion CRM Business opportunities for partners, etc. During his opening keynote, Anthony Lye (Oracle Senior Vice-President and head of Oracle CRM) presented the current Fusion CRM business status, disclosed the overall Oracle CRM product strategy and responded to many questions from the audience. Later on that day, 8 Oracle ISV's presented their Oracle Cloud CRM add-on's and highlighted the value that System Integrators can benefit from as part of a Cloud CRM project. After a very friendly networking diner in a Spanish restaurant, the second day was dedicated to Fusion CRM, with a deeper dive into its major components (Sales, Sales Planning, Marketing) including the Fusion Composers. Briefings on Oracle Consulting Services Fusion CRM dedicated offerings and Fusion CRM Partner Programs concluded the day and the event. All participants rated the event as "good" to "Excellent" and mentioned that it was meaningful for them to plan their Oracle Cloud CRM based business in the near future. • MSFT Excel pivot table links to external data

  Question1: What is the best online forum to ask MSFT Excel questions of the following variety? Question2: How can I link an excel pivot-table to a potentially changing source table without having to re-draw the excel pivot-table layout every time the source table changes data. (Note, the columns are not changing, just the data in the rows). Background: I have an excel 2007 pivot table that is grabbing data from another sheet (an excel "table" ... tables are a new feature of excel 2007). When I change the data in the source table, and then go to the pivot table and press "refresh" ... the pivot table reverts to its "blank" format and requires me to re-drag the columns rows and values. What I want is for the pivot-table to simply re-draw itself without me having to re-create the pivot table layout.

• How to prove that an email has been sent?

  I have a dispute on my hands in which the other party (landlord's real estate agent) dishonestly claims to not have received an email that I truly did send. My questions is, what are the ways to prove that the email was indeed sent? Thus far, the methods that I have already thought of are: Screenshot of the mail in the outbox Forwarding a copy of the original email I am aware of other things like HTTP/ SMTP headers etc that would exist as well. Are these useful for my purposes, and if so how do I extract these? The email in question was sent using Yahoo webmail ( http://au.mail.yahoo.com/ ). Edit: I am not seeking legal advice here, just technical advice as to how to gather this information.

• SEO: many stackoverflow users' pages have got no Google PR and they are not indexed, why?

  If you go to my user page on Stack Overflow and you check it with the Gogle bar you can see has got no PR at all (this does happen for almost any user page, even people with much higher reputation, the only exceptions seem to be the users in page 1, and some other users they have PR). My user page's Page Rank is not only zero, but not calculated at all. When PR is 0 or less than 1, but calculated the Google bar shows white, but when the PR is not even calculated like in my user page the Google bar shows in grey. I further more discovered that my user page is NOT EVEN INDEXED on Google, simple test is searching on Google for the exact page url: "http://stackoverflow.com/users/260080/marco-demaio" and you will see no result. The question is how can this be??? This is really weird to me because of the following reason: If you search on Google for "Marco Demaio" on stackoverflow site only (you can do this by searching "site:stackoverflow.com Marco Demaio") the search result shows hundreds of 'asking/answering questions' pages where I was 'tagged'!!! Let's check one of these: the 1st one that appears now (shows one of the question I asked). We can be sure this page is indexed in Google because comes out in a search moreover its PR is calculated, it's probably nearly zero, but still some PR flows there, the PR bar is not grey, but white: The page shown above has got links to my own user page. I checked the source code of the page shown above and the links are not hidden or set with a rel="nofollow", moreover I can't see any meta character excluding the links on the page from being followed. So what's happening? Why Google does not see my user page at all. Did stackoverflow do something to achieve this? If yes what did they do? Any explantion really appreciates (as always). P.S. obviously I checked also the code of my user page, but I could not find meta tags excluding Google search for the page. P.S. 2 in a desperate adventure I also checked StackOverflow robots but it does not seem to exclude user pages. UPDATE 1 following up on some answers, I did some more research. Excluding for a while the PR problem (since PR is not science), and looking only at the user page on StackOverflow NOT BEING INDEXED problem: pages do not seem to be indexed by Google because of the user reputation, this user for instance has got NOW 200 points less reputation than me and his page is indexed (while mine not). It does not seem even to be connected with months you have been on Stackoverflow, this user (almost my same reputation) has been there for 3 months only and his page is indexed (while mine not and I have been a user for 7 months). It's bizzarre! UPDATE February/2011 As of today the page got indexed by Google at least when you search for "site:stackoverflow.com Marco Demaio" it's the 1st page. The amazing thing is that it has still got NO PageRank at all: Google toolbar states loud and clear "No PageRank information available". It's odd!

  have main office pfsense firewall configured like this: local networks WAN - internet LAN - local network VOIP - IP phones need to connect remote offices (multi-users) and single remote users (from home) use IPSEC or OpenVPN to build "permanent" automatically connecting tunnels from remote location to main location. in remote locations, network will look like this: WAN - internet LAN - local network multiple users VOIP - multiple IP phones in order for the IP phones to work they have to be able to "see" the VOIP network and the VOIP server back at the main office for single remote users ( like from home ) the setup will be similar but only one phone and one computer so questions: best way to tie networks together? IPSEC or OpenVPN can this be setup to automatically connect ? any issues/suggestions with that design/topology ? QoS or issues with running the VOIP traffic over a VPN throughput, quality etc.. obviously depends on remote locations connection to some degree

• How is IntelliJ better than Eclipse?

  I know there have been questions like What is your favorite editor/IDE?, but none of them have answered this question: Why spend the money on IntelliJ when Eclipse is free? I'm personally a big IntelliJ fan, but I haven't really tried Eclipse. I've used IntelliJ for projects that were Java, JSP, HTML/CSS, Javascript, PHP, and Actionscript, and the latest version, 9, has been excellent for all of them. Many coworkers in the past have told me that they believe Eclipse to be "pretty much the same" as IntelliJ, but, to counter that point, I've occasionally sat behind a developer using Eclipse who's seemed comparably inefficient (to accomplish roughly the same task), and I haven't experienced this with IntelliJ. They may be on par feature-by-feature but features can be ruined by a poor user experience, and I wonder if it's possible that IntelliJ is easier to pick up and discover time-saving features. For users who are already familiar with Eclipse, on top of the real cost of IntelliJ, there is also the cost of time spent learning the new app. Eclipse gets a lot of users who simply don't want to spend $250 on an IDE. If IntelliJ really could help my team be more productive, how could I sell it to them? For those users who've tried both, I'd be very interested in specific pros or cons either way.
