• Searching for the right pattern to handle login data

  Hi all, I'm working on a controller that handles logins for a Web app. These logins will come from multiple clients but will all contain the same data. However, depending on the client, this data will be interpreted into common entities for our webapp differently. For instance, we have a user code that gets sent in, and in one case we may use the first four digits of the code, and in another case 12 digits of the code to map to a field on a User entity. Instead of handling this all in the controller and having big nasty if blocks of logic, I would like to use a pattern to handle how this information gets ingested into our application. What are your opinions?

• Network unreachable on Ubuntu guest after trying to set up a host only network on Virtualbox

  I have a Mac OS X host and a bunch of guests including Ubuntu and Arch Linux. I was trying to set up a host-only network at eth1 to let me ssh into the system. But now eth0 isn't working properly either. Ubuntu can no longer connect to remote hosts or browse the internet. It tells me that the network is unreachable. What's gone wrong here?   We have a set of C macros, here, for using the preprocessor to do bitfield operations, and we run into warnings when attempting to use these macros in visual studio. The problem can be demonstrated very easily: #define BITFIELD_WIDTHMASK(Width) \ ((Width) >= 32 ? ~0x0ul : (1ul << (Width)) - 1) unsigned long foo(void) { return BITFIELD_WIDTHMASK(32); } Compiling this with MSVC yields the warning: test.c(12) : warning C4293: '<<' : shift count negative or too big, undefined behavior This isn't a behavior problem - the << operator won't be used in this case, and that should be detected at compile time. But does anyone have any suggestions about how to rewrite the macro to avoid the warning? Or, failing that, how to redesign the macro interface for this? Thanks in advance

• Should I start with Trac 0.12 ?

  I'm going to start using Trac for the first time. From what I've gathered, the latest 0.12 is capable of supporting multiple project easily (which is something I will need since I got about 5 projects). However, it seems 0.12 is still in the development (0.12-dev). So, my question is, is it good enough for a newbie in Trac like me to use it? Does anyone has any experience using it ? It will be installed on a Linux server. BTW, I'll only be using the basic functions such as svn browser, wiki, tickets and others.

• Can I detect unused extra parameters passed to javascript methods?

  In Javascript I can call any method with more than the necessary amount of parameters and the extra parameters are silently ignored. e.g. letters = ['a','b','c'] //correct letters.indexOf('a') //This also works without error or warning letters.indexOf('a', "blah", "ignore me", 38) Are there ways to detect cases where this occurs? My motivation is that in my experience cases where this occurs are usually bugs. Identification of these by code analysis or at runtime would help track these errors down. These cases are especially prevalent where people are expecting alterations to base types which may not have occurred. Logging a warning where this happens e.g. Date.parse('02--12--2012', 'dd--MM--YYYY') Notes: To be clear I would like a solution that doesn't involve me sprinkling checks all over my code and other peoples' code.

  I'm learning TDD, and I have a question about private / protected variables. My question is: If a function I want to test is operating on a private variable, how should I test it? Here is the example I'm working with: I have a class called Table that contains an instance variable called internalRepresentation that is a 2D array. I want to create a function called multiplyValuesByN that multiplies all the values in the 2D array by the argument n. So I write the test for it (in Python): def test_multiplyValuesByN (self): t = Table(3, 3) # 3x3 table, filled with 0's t.set(0, 0, 4) # Set value at position (0,0) to 4 t.multiplyValuesByN(3) assertEqual(t.internalRepresentation, [[12, 0, 0], [0, 0, 0], [0, 0, 0]]) Now, if I make internalRepresentation private or protected, this test will not work. How am I supposed to write the test so it doesn't depend on internalRepresentation but still tests that it looks correct after calling multiplyValuesByN?

[Query]: Why and how are these values inferred? I mean why specifically have only 32 or 64 bit pointers? The diagram says, One data block{8 KB} for each pointer {4 bytes/8 bytes} [Query]: How does this actually work out? i.e. 8*1024 bytes / 8 bytes = 1024 bytes? As for my environment, here is the relevant portion of my Gemfile: group :test, :development do gem 'minitest-rails' end And the resulting portions of my Gemfile.lock: minitest (2.12.1) minitest-rails (0.0.7) minitest (~> 2.12) rails (~> 3.1) I am now in the process of debugging this. • Entering Complex Data into Access

  Fairly new to Access and trying to do something that seems simple, but may be very complex. I want to create a database of projects, each project has several phases (ie proposal, marketing, etc) and that will allow for multiple employees to work on a single project. Ie Bob and John are working on project number 102. From here, i would like to enter the forecasted start and end dates for each phase of the project, and enter the forecasted number our hours each employee will be allowed to work on that phase of that project ie. Project - Employee - Phase - Start - End - (list weeks) 102 - Bob - Marketing - 12-May-10 - 21-May-10 - 3 - 5 (3 hours first week, 5 hours the second) and so on Basically would all this data be on one table, or several? And can access dynamically show the weeks between the start and end date so that i can input the hours? I feel this database will become severely complicated :S Thanks, J

Say I wanted to do an operation like: take an array [1,2,3] multiply each element by 2 (map): [2,4,6] add the elements together (reduce): 12 multiply the result by 10: 120 I can do this pretty cleanly in underscore using chaining, like so: arr = [1,2,3] map = (el) -> 2*el reduce = (s,n) -> s+n out = (r) -> 10*r reduced = _.chain(arr).map(map).reduce(reduce).value() result = out(reduced) However, it would be even nicer if I could chain the 'out' method too, like this: result = _.chain(arr).map(map).reduce(reduce).out(out).value() Now this would be a fairly simple addition to a library like underscore. But my questions are: Does this 'out' method have a name in functional programming? Does this already exist in underscore (tap comes close, but not quite).

  I am beginning C++. I have a long way to go and I am one to never stop learning. I want to create a project for myself that will allow me to learn as I go. It will also give me the motivation and possibly add to my portfolio when I graduate. The runescape skill calculator will ask for your current experience in the current skill of your choosing and your desired level. For Example: my woodcutting experience is 60 and I want to get to lvl 5 which is 120 exp. That means im 60 experience away. by cutting oak logs I get 5 experience per log. The calculator would tell me I need to cut 12 Oak logs. All these numbers are made up. So to my question. Where would I even begin? Hoping it would have buttons to press.

  I am having this unexplained NoMethodError with undefined method `events' for #. I don't know why since my model association are well defined and the event table has the foreign keys for the user table. • Psycopg2 doesn't like table names that start with a lower case letter

  I am running ActiveState's ActivePython 2.6.5.12 and PostgreSQL 9.0 Beta 1 under Windows XP. If I create a table with an upper case first letter (i.e. Books), psycopg2 returns the "Programming Error: relation "books" does not exist" error message when I run the select statement: execute("SELECT * FROM Books"). The same error is returned if I run: execute("SELECT * FROM books"). However, if I change the table to a lower case first name (i.e. books), then either of the above statements works. Are tables name supposed to have a lower case first name? Is this a setting or a feature or a bug? Am I missing something obvious?
