• Force10 S60 remote management

  We've got a Force10 S60 switch to replace an older Cisco. I can't find a way to give the switch itself an IP address on the local VLAN so I can ssh to it. The config guide talks about using either a management interface on a separate management network or dedicating e.g. a gigabit port as a management port with a dedicated IP address. Ideally I would like to do what we do currently with the Cisco switches, which is in effect give the entire switch an IP so it can be reached from any host on the same VLAN without having to use up a physical port on the switch or physically connect the management port to another device. Is this possible with the S60 and if so, how would you give it, say the address 10.0.1.1 in vlan 10 (10.0.1.1/24)? Thanks!!!

• Can I pin a cmd/batch file to command prompt on the Windows 7 taskbar?

  Hey all, just wanted to ask quick if anyone knows how to do this. If not I'll post it on connect.microsoft.com as a suggestion. With Explorer pinned to the taskbar you can pin folders to Explorer, so they are in the jumplist for the explorer shortcut. I have a shortcut to CMD pinned to my taskbar and would like to be able to do the same concept, ... that is to be able to pin a bat/cmd file to the CMD shortcut, so in the CMD jumplist, I could have quick access to a couple batch files I use routinely. Anyone know a way to do this? I tried just dragging the batch file to the CMD shortcut on the taskbar like how you do with folders and Explorer, but that did not work.

• Clusterware 11gR2 &ndash; Setting up an Active/Passive failover configuration

  Oracle provides many interesting ways to ensure High Availability. Dataguard configurations, RAC configurations or even both (as recommended for a Maximum Available Architecture - MAA) are the most frequently found. But when it comes to protecting a system with an Active/Passive architecture with failover capabilities, one often thinks to expensive third party cluster systems. Oracle Clusterware technology, which comes free with Oracle Database, is – in the knowing of most people - often linked to Oracle RAC and therefore, is rarely used to implement failover solutions. 11gR2 Clusterware – which is part of Oracle Grid Infrastructure - provides a comprehensive framework to setup automatic failover configurations. It is actually possible to make “failover-able'” and, therefore to protect, almost every kind of application (from xclock to the more complex Application Server) In the next couple of lines, I will try to present the different steps to achieve this goal : Have a fully operational 11gR2 database protected by automatic failover capabilities. I assume you are fluent in installing Oracle Database 11gR2, Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11gR2 on a Linux system and that ASM is not a problem for you (as I am using it as a shared storage). If not, please have a look at Oracle Documentation. As often, I made my tests using an Oracle VirtualBox environment. The scripts are tested and functional. Unfortunately, there can always be a typo or a mistake. This blog entry is not a course around the Clusterware Framework. I just hope it will let you see how powerful it is and that it will give you the whilst to go further with it…   Prerequisite 2 Linux boxes (OELCluster01 and OELCluster02) at the same OS level. I used OEL 5 Update 5 with Enterprise Kernel. Shared Storage (SAN). On my VirtualBox system, I used Openfiler to simulate the SAN Oracle 11gR2 Database (11.2.0.1) Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1)   Step 1 – Install the software Using asmlib, create 3 ASM disks (ASM_CRS, ASM_DTA and ASM_FRA) Install Grid Infrastructure for a cluster (OELCluster01 and OELCluster02 are the 2 nodes of the cluster) Use ASM_CRS to store Voting Disk and OCR. Use SCAN. Install Oracle Database Standalone binaries on both nodes. Use asmca to check/mount the disk groups on 2 nodes Use dbca to create and configure a database on the primary node Let’s name it DB11G. Copy the pfile, password file to the second node. Create adump directoty on the second node.   Step 2 - Setup the resource to be protected After its creation with dbca, the database is automatically protected by the Oracle Restart technology available with Grid Infrastructure. Consequently, it restarts automatically (if possible) after a crash (ex: kill –9 smon). A database resource has been created for that in the Cluster Registry. We can observe this with the command : crsctl status resource that shows and ora.dba11g.db entry. Let’s save the definition of this resource, for future use : mkdir –p /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts chown oracle:oinstall /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts crsctl status resource ora.db11g.db -p > /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/myResource.txt Although very interesting, Oracle Restart is not cluster aware and cannot restart the database on any other node of the cluster. So, let’s remove it from the OCR definitions, we don’t need it ! srvctl stop database -d DB11G srvctl remove database -d DB11G Instead of it, we need to create a new resource of a more general type : cluster_resource. Here are the steps to achieve this : Create an action script :  /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/my_ActivePassive_Cluster.sh #!/bin/bash export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1 export ORACLE_SID=DB11G case $1 in 'start')   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus /nolog <<EOF   connect / as sysdba   startup EOF   RET=0   ;; 'stop')   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus /nolog <<EOF   connect / as sysdba   shutdown immediate EOF   RET=0   ;; 'check')    ok=`ps -ef | grep smon | grep $ORACLE_SID | wc -l`    if [ $ok = 0 ]; then      RET=1    else      RET=0    fi    ;; '*')      RET=0   ;; esac if [ $RET -eq 0 ]; then    exit 0 else    exit 1 fi   This script must provide, at least, methods to start, stop and check the database. It is self-explaining and contains nothing special. Just be aware that it is run as Oracle user (because of the ACL property – see later) and needs to know about the environment. It also needs to be present on every node of the cluster. chmod +x /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/my_ActivePassive_Cluster.sh scp  /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/my_ActivePassive_Cluster.sh   oracle@OELCluster02:/crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts Create a new resource file, based on the information we got from previous  myResource.txt . Name it myNewResource.txt. myResource.txt  is shown below. As we can see, it defines an ora.database.type resource, named ora.db11g.db. A lot of properties are related to this type of resource and do not need to be used for a cluster_resource. Notice the NAME property that should not have the ora. prefix Notice the TYPE property that is not ora.database.type but cluster_resource. Notice the definition of ACTION_SCRIPT. Notice the HOSTING_MEMBERS that enumerates the members of the cluster (as returned by the olsnodes command). Take care of the resource type. It needs to be a cluster_resource and not a ora.database.type resource (Oracle recommendation) .   crsctl add resource DB11G.db  -type cluster_resource -file /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/myNewResource.txt Step 3 - Start the resource crsctl start resource DB11G.db This command launches the ACTION_SCRIPT with a start and a check parameter on the primary node of the cluster. Step 4 - Test this We will test the setup using 2 methods. crsctl relocate resource DB11G.db This command calls the ACTION_SCRIPT  (on the two nodes)  to stop the database on the active node and start it on the other node. Once done, we can revert back to the original node, but, this time we can use a more “MS$ like” method :Turn off the server on which the database is running. After short delay, you should observe that the database is relocated on node 1. Conclusion Once the software installed and the standalone database created (which is a rather common and usual task), the steps to reach the objective are quite easy : Create an executable action script on every node of the cluster. Create a resource file. Create/Register the resource with OCR using the resource file. Start the resource. • Wireless network unavailable, no networks found after Windows update

  Old Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with Linksys Wireless G network adapter card (WPC54G v2). Wireless connection was working fine. Then I ran a bunch of windows updates, I think the last one was the recent .NET 3.5 service pack update. Now wireless networks won't connect. Using windows to manage wireless, no networks show up. I'm typing right now on another laptop where wireless is working fine. I've restarted router & Dell laptop several times. Tried to Repair wireless connection and refresh network list. Also restarted DHCP and WZC service, all to no avail. I then uninstalled .NET 3.5 SP (don't remember number) and .NET 3.0 SP2. I don't remember all the windows updates that I just ran because I haven't used this laptop in a while so had to catch up on some updates.

• Windows Live Writer fails to start

  I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: WindowsLiveWriter Problem Signature 01: CreateThis Problem Signature 02: 115 Problem Signature 03: System.UriFormatException Problem Signature 04: 15.4.3555.308 Problem Signature 05: 2.0.50727.5456 Problem Signature 06: Windows Live Writer OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Since I was unable to start windows live writer at all, I tried uninstalling it and removing all files associated with it in my "C:/users/[username]/appdata" folder. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

• MVVM Project and Item Templates

  Intro This is the first in a series of small articles about what is new in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4. The series is build around a open source demo application SilverAmp which is available on http://SilverAmp.CodePlex.com.   MVVM Project and Item Templates Expression Blend has got a new project template to get started with a Model-View-ViewModel project  easily. The template provides you with a View and a ViewModel bound together. It also adds the ViewModel to the SampleData of your project. It is available for both Silverlight and Wpf. To get going, start a new project in Expression Blend and select Silverlight DataBound Application from the Silverlight project type. In this case I named the project DemoTest1. The solution now contains several folders: SampleData; which contains a data to show in Blend ViewModels; starts with one file, MainViewModel.cs Views; containing MainView.xaml with codebehind used for binding with the MainViewModel class. and your regular App.xaml and MainPage.xaml The MainViewModel class contains a sample property and a sample method. Both the property and the method are used in the MainView control. The MainView control is a regular UserControl and is placed in the MainPage. You can continue on building your applicaition by adding your own properties and methods to the ViewModel and adding controls to the View. Adding Views with ViewModels is very easy too. The guys at Microsoft where nice enough to add a new Item template too: a UserControl with ViewModel. If you add this new item to the root of your solution it will add the .xaml file to the views folder and a .cs file to the ViewModels folder. Conclusion The databound Application project type is a great to get your MVVM based project started. • Is this kind of Design by Contract useless?

  I've just started informatics university and I'm attending a programming course about C(++). The programming professor prefers to teach very few things (in 3 month we have just reached the functions topic) and connect every topic with a type of programming design that somehow is similar to the Design by Contract design. Basically what he ask us to do is to write every exercise with comments Pre-conditions, Post-conditions and Invariants that should prove the correctness of each program we write. But this doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, ok: maybe writing down your thoughts prevent you from doing some mistakes, but if this is all an abstract thing, then if your program intuition is wrong you'll write your program wrong and then you'll also write pre and post conditions wrong probably auto convincing your self about its correctness. Most of the time, both me and other students have written programs that seemed ok and that had correct pre and post condition too. But at the moment of testing it was just completely wrong. I had some experience before this course of programming and I had written a lot of line of code before and I found myself comfortably with just writing a program and unit test it. It take less time to accomplish and is less "abstract" than just thinking about what every single piece of your program should do in every case (which is kinda like mentally testing it). Finally, all this pre and post conditions takes me like 80% of the total time of the exercise. It's harder to think about putting down this pre and post correct than to write the program itself. Since we are like the only course of the only university probably in the entire world that makes this things, could someone please tell me how should I manage this thing? Am I right thinking that this doesn't worth anything? Should I change university? (there are like double of the people attending that course and it seems that usually very few people passes the exam the first year). Should I convince myself it's method is right?

• How do I install windows wireless driver for TP-Link TL-WN7200ND

  I'm using the TP-Link TL-WN7200ND USB wireless adapter. I have downloaded the Windows drivers and updated Ubuntu to 10.10 by manually connecting the computer to the router. I also installed ndiswrapper-gtk. I get a Windows Wireless Drivers in my Administration menu, and I was able to get it to read the Windows 7 .inf file. The .inf for XP does not work. It adds it and the driver appears in the list with "Hardware: present". I set up the wireless connection information (ESSID and WPA2-Personal key). Problem: I don't see the network manager icon in the top right of the screen. I managed to manually start it manually using sudo services network-manager restart but it shows no connections in the menu, saying that there's nothing to manage. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have an entry for the loopback and the standard two-liner for eth0 with dhcp. From memory, something like: iface eth0 auto eth0 dhcp I had read somewhere that 10.10 would have standard support for my wireless adapter (TL-WN7200ND) but that seems not to be the case. However, I don't ever remember having the network-manager icon in the top-right and it does not auto-start at the moment. This was originally an Ubuntu 9.10 install that I've upgraded over time. I also used to use pppoeconf to connect to the net, which might affect the /etc/network/interfaces file?

• Wireless printer going offline upon entering power save mode

  I recently bought a printer, Samsung ML1865W, a wireless laser printer. It works very well, wirelessly until after a while, it goes to power save mode when the printer goes offline. I then cannot connect to the printer (pinging the ip and various ports associated with it do not give any response) until I power cycle the printer. I have checked my wireless settings and my router, I have installed the printer software in WinXP, Win2000 and in Mac and the printer behaves just the same. Any ideas if the printer hardware itself is broken or that its something on my network/application side that's the culprit. If you own the printer, have you had any trouble like that at any time?

• Use netcat as a proxy to log traffic

  I want to use netcat as a proxy to log http requests and responses to files, then tail these to inspect traffic. Think wireshark. Tried the following where 'fifo' is a named pipe, 'in' and 'out' are files, netcat proxy on port 8080, server on port 8081. while true; do cat fifo | nc -l -p 8080 | tee -a in | nc localhost 8081 | tee -a out 1fifo; done Problems: Netcat stop responing after first request (while loop ignored?). Netcat fails with msg localhost [127.0.0.1] 8081 (tproxy) : Connection refused if server unavailable on 8081. Question: Is it possible to "lazily" connect to 8081 when request is made? I.e. I do not want to have 8081 running when netcat is started.

• Sharing Clipboard between non-networked PC's (KVM style)

  Hi! My situation is this: I have a PC which is joined to a domain, and another computer 'outside' that network. I'd like to use a KVM style device to switch between them, but sharing the clipboard would be fantastic. When searching for such a thing I found various patents for this type of thing (eg http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6901455.html) but can't see one actually for sale anywhere! Anyone know of one? Or an alternative suggestion - eg a program that uses USB or another method to connect two PC's and share clipboard without ethernet? Thanks!

• Print server does not show up on router's attached devices

  Recently I bought a new more powerful wireless N router, DLink DIR 628. So I removed all connections from the previous router (Netgear WGT624) and connected them as they should be to the DLInk router. Everything works fine except for the print server. I have Hawking print server connected to HP Laserjet 6P parallel port printer. It works well with the Netgear router. But when I connect it to the DLInk router, it does not even show up in the LAN computers list. I am not sure what is going on. There is a utility called PSAdmin that can talk to the Hawking print server if I switch to Netgear router. With that utility, I can get the assigned IP address to the print server. But when switching to DLink router, even the PSAdmin fails to find the print server. I have been trying various things for last couple of days in vein. Please help.

• DHCPD Offering ip address on wrong subnet

  I just recently added a new subnet for our wireless network to our DHCP configuration for the 192.168.254.0 subnet. Most of the time when wireless clients connect it works just fine. However, sometimes on seemingly random occasions the DHCP server will send out a DHCPOFFER with an IP address on the wrong subnet. Example: dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from MACADDRESS (ThinkBook2) via 192.168.254.1 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.22.236 to MACADDRESS (ThinkBook2) via 192.168.254.1 Here is the subnet configuration in dhcpd.conf: subnet 192.168.254.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option routers 192.168.254.1; range 192.168.254.34 192.168.254.254; default-lease-time 14400; authoritative; } How can I make sure the server always sends out an IP address on the right subnet?

• VPN/AFP server for centralized TimeMachine backups

  I am a sysadmin for a small group of about 7 people who prefer Apple machines for their work. These machines are currently either a) not backed up at all, or b) backed up using Retrospect(Which I'm not very fond of). I don't really have the budget for anything fancy, and I'd like to keep it as user friendly as possible. Ideally I am thinking of a VPN server they can connect to(to keep the traffic secure, and because they work from home frequently) along with an AFP server for use with TimeMachine. The goal would be to get better backup coverage, along with user-initiated restores and overall ease of use. Does this seem like a reasonable idea? Has anyone done this before? Are there any obvious problems I've overlooked?

• Connecting to a secure, graphical, x session using a stateless thin client

  I'm looking for an open source, non-proprietery solution to this problem, any help would be appreciated. I'd like to setup a server running Ubuntu Server. I'd then like to connect to this server from a stateless thin client and use an x-session. This would occur mostly over local area networks, but also possibly over the internet. What would be the ideal set of software to accomplish this from a security, and usability standpoint? Are there any ready-made stateless thin clients that don't require proprietery software?

  Hi, I have a website sending email using phpmailer - Centos, postfix, php, mysql etc Emails are getting delivered to all hosts correctly except one. Mar 30 14:38:22 server postfix/qmgr[15467]: 7237D218852D: to=, relay=none, delay=0.04, delays=0.04/0.01/0/0, dsn=4.4.2, status=deferred (delivery temporarily suspended: lost connection with mail06.indamail.hu[91.83.45.46] while sending MAIL FROM) They told me to limit concurrent connections to 2 to their server. I did, but they still say I connect more than twice. main.cf: default_destination_concurrency_limit = 1 fallback_relay = smtp_destination_concurrency_limit = 1 initial_destination_concurrency = 1 Any ideas? • Using NPS to restrict access to WLAN

  We currently have one WLAN that only domain users can connect to. We will be adding a guest WLAN and would like all non-domain machines to use this, even if a user has a domain account. We have set up NPS and can log in against it, but we can not restrict the connection option to be a domain computer AND a domain account. As a network policy it states that it moves along through each policy until it finds one that it accepts or runs out. For connection request policies Domain Computers is not an option. This is where I thought I may be able to stop it. Has anyone been able to successfully restrict this without manually adding MACs to the WLAN Controller?

• Takeaways From CSO Roundtable New York

  Thanks to everyone who attended the Chief Security Officer Roundtable in New York last week. We were lucky to have Dennis Brixus, CSO of McGraw-Hill  as a guest speaker. In addition, Jeff Henley, provided a board level perspective on security. Amit Jasuja discussed Oracle's security formula.  A few takeaways from Jeff's talk that were interesting: Security is a board level issue. The challenge at the board level is that boards have short attention span. The CSO needs to be vigilant in educating the board on the strategic importance of security. Every CSO needs to think about cost. The CSO has to look at the economics of security and demonstrate fiduciary responsibility. We have to think of security as a business enabler. Security is the enabler that helps us expand into new markets and connect better with our customers and partners. While the CSO can't prevent every threat, we have to expect the CSO to have a plan. • One Mac computer with multiple network connections?

  I have a Mac (OS X 10.5) that I would like to connect to a dedicated/isolated Internet connection (one that is not connected to the LAN), and a LAN. The LAN is set up with its own, separate, Internet connection which is shared by several dozen computers (and is quite slow). I want to set it up so that the Mac uses its own dedicated Internet connection (on a different account with a different company) for its Internet access, but can still access the local area network as well. How can I configure the Mac & the network to allow this?
