  • Would it be smarter to setup a Linux development server at home, or to use a hosted server?

    I am in the process of learning as much as I can about LAMP. I was wondering if I should set a web server on my home network, or use a service like Rackspace (cloud space)? I need to have root access, to be able to access it remotely via SSH/FTP/HTTP, and to be able to install things like subversion, etc. I currently have Comcast so I have plenty of bandwidth, but I am not sure if this would violate the TOS, and/or compromise the security of my home network. Pricing for these cloud hosts, seems reasonable ($11 per month plus about $0.10 per GB of bandwidth), but I am not sure if I will have to control I am looking for.

    I need to create a program which will show how elliptic curve cryptography works. I was considering using Java Swing to create the GUI, but the main problem is what tool to use to plot the elliptic curve itself, and how to integrate that with Java Swing. I would like the plot to be included in the user interface and also allow changes to be made to it. Can you suggest any tools that would help with this?

    Hi, I know there are things out there to help to optimize queries, ect... but is there anything else, something like a full package that can scan your database and highlight all the performance issues, naming conventions, tables not properly normalized, etc? I know this is the job of a DBA and if the DBA is good, he shouldn't need a tool like that, but sometimes you start a new job, you get in charge of an existing database and the DB is a mess, so you don't know where to start...     In Photoshop you can adjust the hue, saturation and lightness of an image with three sliders. ImageMagick you can modulate the brightness, saturation, and hue. Minimizing the saturation correctly produces a black and white image in both programs. Maxing out the saturation appears close, but ImageMagick appears to soften some of the blown out edges while Photoshop will expose more the the compression artifacts. How can I accurately reproduce Photoshop's saturation changes from within ImageMagick, or other command line tool.

  • I'm an emacs user. How do I learn vim?

    Most of the time, I use emacs. However, I've decided to try to learn vim. I'm happy with emacs, I just am trying to avoid having it turn into Maslow's Hammer. I've seen a few tutorials, but I have yet to see a good one written from the standpoint of someone coming from emacs. Is there any general advice that someone who's undergone this learning process before can give me? Most importantly, what are some concepts in Vim that may not be intuitive to me coming from an emacs background?

Features it needs to have: should NOT display the keyboard layout on the screen! should give detailed statistics which actually measure progress (for which key do I have the highest error rate, graphs showing how typing speed improved over time, etc) should enable me to actually learn touch-typing in about one long weekend were I don't do much else than learning to touch-type. it would be very good if it were possible to load a text-file and the program will use words from the text-file for the exercises as well My goals are: at least same typing speed as I have now but which touch-typing, want to be able to look at the screen only when typing P.S.: EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'm using Win 7. And I know what the Dvorak and Colemak keyboard layouts are, but I'm not interested in them. My question was with respect to standard US keyboard layout.

That means, the service requester is blocking after sending a message to the service. my question is: is it related to the -a -s parameter of wsdl2java tool, Since -a generate async style code and -s generate sync style code.
