Best Practice - SQL 2012 & IIS in VMWare

We are pretty new to VMWare and looking for some thoughts on our environment. We have a VMWare cluster that has on one host: VM#1: MS Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise & SQL Server 2012 VM#2: MS Windows 2008 R2 Standard & IIS The IIS asp.net app talks directly to the SQL Server. We had this similar environment on physical servers a few months ago and just recently moved to the virtualized environment. Regarding the setup, we have not tweaked any of the vm resource parameters -- all is set as standard and all is working. What is observed is that the VMs seem to spool down and we get lags in response. Of course this sin't as fast as the old physical environment, but I am wondering if: *is it a good idea to run the SQL server and the IIS server on the same host? They are the only two VMs on it. The host is a new Dell R620 with 192 gb mem. does it make sense to change any CPU or memory reservations when it doesn't seem like there is any contention is there a way to keep the VMs spooled up to eliminate delays? This is a brand new squeaky clean vanilla install. What are your thoughts?

Small office network setups

I work at a small office and we're overhauling our network setup there. We're a web dev company and at the moment we have 50+ production sites running on the same machine that runs our internal email, which is just plain stupid. We're moving all our client hosting off site and are now looking for something to run our internal office requirement. Below is a brain dump: Equal amount of Mac & PC, about 25 machines in total. We need a central "server" to host files that should be accessible everyone as a "network drive". If possible we'd like to use low cost hardware for this (Mac or Win based). Disk space should be upward of 1TB. Ideally we should also be able to run a small web server on this machine (LAMP stack) to run some planning and billing applications we wrote ourselves. We need some sort of MS Exchange alternative for things like a shared calendar and especially being able to set Out of Office replies. We have one printer that is connected to the network Setup should be something can preferably be managed easily via a graphical interface and NOT require command line skills. Users want to keep using Apple Mail or MS Outlook After a quick google I came across the Zimbra collaboration suite, can anyone recommend this or any other solution for our office?

Converting a Windows 2003 server

We have a legacy database system based upon MS SQL running on Windows Server 2003. The client software will only run on Windows XP. We have recently had success converting a client into a virtual machine and running it under Fusion on Mac minis. So far, it is working incredibly well. So well, in fact, that we are now considering trying to convert the server to a virtual machine. This raises several questions, though: 1. The server uses a raid array. Does the VM virtualize the raid array? I only ask because in my experience Windows products don't like it when you change core hardware. 2. Is there any reason why running SQL server on a virtual machine won't work? It will be up 24/7. 3. Is there a different converter for servers? 4. Will I have to track down the licensing for MS SQL and Server 2003 or will they come across ok? 5. The company that designed the software is no longer in business. There is some fear that the software is somehow tied to the hardware configuration. We bought the hardware, but their engineers came out and configured the system. Will the virtual machine be able to spoof particular chip sets? Thanks! Jim Bass

Postfix + Exchange + ActiveDirectory; How to mix them

My client has got many sub-offices, and one head office. The headoffice has a domain name: business.com All users in the many sub-offices need to have a headoffice email address: [email protected] Anyone not in the head office will need the email forwarded to an external email address. All users in the head office will have their email delivered to Microsoft Exchange. Users are listed in Active Directory under two different OU's: HeadOffice or SubOffice. Is this something able to be configured? I've done some googling, but I can't find any examples or businesses set up this way. Edit: Postfix will accept all email, will need to determine to forward the email to an external account or alternatively have it delivered to MS Exchange. I've done some reading about MS Exchange and that you can 'mail-enable' contacts for forwarding - but I don't know if each AD account requires an Exchange CAL? The end goal is to forward email to external accounts to sub offices or accept email for head office. Office Compatibility Pack and File Permissions

MS isn't my thing, so I hope somebody can give me a pointer. We have a Windows domain, with a Server-2003-SP1-Enterprise file server. One of the specific files is a MS Excel 2007 (XLSX) file created by user LK. In the "Security" preferences setting, about a half-dozen users (including me) have access to this file. LK is the owner and has "full control", while the rest of us have "Read" , "Read & Execute", and "Write" permission. LK is also the owner of the directory that this file resides in. I don't know if that's relevant. So far so good. My desktop machine has Windows XP SP3 , and Excel 2003 SP3 , and the "Office Compatibility Pack" which lets me read and write the new XLSX files. However, whenever I write the file, the permissions are changed. The newly-written file only has permissions for LK and me, and both are "Full control" So in short, what am I doing wrong, and how should I set this up to do it right, keeping the permissions on the file that were there when I started?

Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center - Slow response for App-specific shortcuts

So a few months ago, I bought a new MS mouse, and was surprised that they'd discontinued Intellipoint in favor of this Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center. It seems to have the same functionality underneath all the bloat, but there's a very serious drawback - when I set up application-specific functions for the extra buttons on the mouse, they work, but sometimes with a very long delay, like up to a minute or more. For example, I often set up the left side button as an "Undo" in various programs for convenience. But sometimes, when I try to use that Undo button, nothing happens, so I'm forced to use the standard Ctrl-Z or whatever. But then, a minute or so later, it suddenly remembers that I hit that button a while back, and calls the Undo unexpectedly on something entirely different. It's infuriating. No modern computer function should be this slow. It's not the software or the computer itself, because doing an Undo via Ctrl-Z or the menu still works instantly. It's very definitely a side-effect of delayed response to the mouse button. Usually after it delays the first time, it'll work quickly after that, but if you haven't used a given shortcut in several minutes, it "forgets" again and you get another inexplicably long delay. Intellipoint never had this problem, but it's not supported any more, and not compatible with the newer mice. Has anyone else noticed slow-downs with MS M&K C and app-specific shortcuts? Any ideas how to get around this? I use these shortcuts extensively in my workflow and it's just entirely unacceptable to have such a long delay in what should be a pretty basic feature.

Excel or Access: how to group several lines in a table and insert contents in columns? ("split column")

I have a table containing data of sold products (shown in the example on the left): Columns: Number of the order Product Name Attribute - specifies what is given in the following field "value", e. g. Customer Name or Product Variant Value - is the value of the Attribute Count - is the number of products of this variant sold in the order That means: Product B has 2 variants "c" and "d" Note that in Order 1 Product B was sold in Variant d only, because the letter "N" in field "D4" means "none". Note, that in OrdnerNo 3 Product B was sold only in Variant c, because for Variant d field "D9" is "N"!! This is confusing, but it is the structure of the original data (which I can not change). I need a way to convert the table on the left in a table like that on the right: one line for each product type Order Number Product Name Customer Name Count (number of products sold in this order) Variant - this is the problem, as it has to be filled with the So all rows with the same OrderNo and same product have to be grouped in to one, and I hope it is clear what I need. I tried to do it with Pivot Tables, but that fails, as the Count is always in each line, no matter if it has Value "N" or not and for the products without variants there is only one line for each order, however for products with variants there are several... So how could I create the right table with a VBA macro in MS Excel or maybe there is a trick in MS Access to do it directly or with an SQL query?

Nginx Server Block Not Working? - Already running other vhosts just this one not working

Im running a Debian 6 LEMP server with multiple virtual hosts and everything has been fine for 5 or so sites. But I've just tried adding another but for some reason it's just not working. By not working I mean in Chrome I get the "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to subdomain.domain.net" error. I've changed the domain for security to subdomain.example.com and the IP is masked. Hosts file (I have multiple sub domains): xxx.xxx.xx.xxx *.example.com *.example Server Block: server { listen 80; server_name subdomain.example.com; access_log /srv/www/subdomain.example.com/logs/access.log; error_log /srv/www/subdomain.example.com/logs/error.log; root /srv/www/subdomain.example.com/public_html; location / { index index.html index.htm index.php; } location ~ \.php$ { include fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; } } I've created the system link to the file in the /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/ directory and restarted/reloaded nginx. How can I get around windows 8.1 store (& metro apps) not working with UAC disabled

I have UAC disabled because it is annoying and causes more problems that it could ever possibly solve, at least for me. Here is yet another problem, and it seems to be due to a recent update as I don't remember it in the past. Even with a MS account, I can't use the store because UAC is disabled. How can I get around this? Short term I can just enable it, reboot, use store, disable it, reboot and be on my way but there has to be a better way (other than MS getting their software completely right - like that will happen anytime, ever) Edit: Apparently this is far more of an issue than I originally thought. Now every(?)many metro apps requires UAC. Anyone aware of the update this got rolled in with? Thankfully netflix isn't affected which is the only metro app I use at the moment. What I see: Event Log info: Activation of app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: This app can't be activated when UAC is disabled. Which default Database Systems come installed in Microsoft VS2010 Express?

Appreciate all advice 0n the following questions Which database systems (Ms SQL 2008, MS SQL Compact, or others) comes installed with VS2010 Express edition. SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is free, can we install and integrate with VS2010 Express? How to uninstall those database already come installed? I have installed VS2010 express on Windows 7; just VS2010 components (VB, C#, C++ and Web Developer) and without installing any other things like SQL Express. These are actually installed by installing VS2010 Express, but I have no idea how to use them or verify their valid existence from VS2010. Also, do I have to uninstall them before I install SQL Server 2008 R2, which is the latest version I believe? And what tool is needed to manage and create data source and tables?

.lnk doesn't open, no errors

I have a shortcut (.LNK) on my desktop to a MS Access database out on a network drive. When I double click that shortcut I get an hour glass for about 10 seconds and then nothing. No errors, no access opening, nothing happens. It appears as if there's not even an MSAccess process running in the background. The file successfully opens from: The Open dialog in Access The commandline "C:\path\to\MSACCESS.EXE C:\path\to\shortcut.lnk" The commandline "C:\path\to\MSACCESS.EXE C:\path\to\whatTheShortcutPointsTo.mdb" The file silently fails to open from: Double clicking the shortcut.lnk Double clicking the mdb file that shortcut.lnk targets At first I thought it had to do with how the link handler operated but the fact that it does the same exact thing when I try to open the mdb directly in explorer makes me think it's an issue with explorer. I've tried restoring, deleting, and recreating the association with the extension. I've tried running MSACCESS.EXE /regserver. I've run out of things to throw at it. In case this is specific to MS Access 2007; I'm trying to use 2007 :)

Noisily rendered text in Firefox

It came to me in a week or so that certain pages (Facebook, StrackOverflow, some news sites) have text rendering errors in Firefox. As a workaround if I refresh the page, or simply select and deselect the buggy text, the unpleasant effect disappears. I don't have this effect in Internet Explorer or in any of my desktop applications. Windows 7 Pro 64bit (fresh) Firefox 19.0.2 (fresh) Ati Radeon HD 4600 Series (fresh drivers) Thanks for the help in advance! Update 1/2 I have only three addons: Forecastfox, Hungarian spell checking dictionary and Quick locale switcher. The latter two are installed after the effect appeared. I disabled the first individually and did not helped. But if I start my firefox with disabled addons I cannot reproduce the error. As far as I know this mode does not mean disabled plugins, which I do have (Adobe Acrobat, Citrix ICA Client, Google Earth plugin, Google update, Java Deployment Toolkit 6, MS Office 2010, MS Windows Media Player Firefox, Shockwave Flash, Silverlight, VLC Web). Update 2/2 If I disable all plugins and extensions I still have the problem. If I start Firefox with disabled addons then I cannot reproduce the problem.

What is the fall off of subsecond throughput on Ethernet Network Interfaces

On a network interface, speeds are given in term of data over time, in particular, they are bits per second. However, in the uber-fast world of computing -- a second is kind of a really long time. So for example, given a linear falloff. A 1 GBit per second interface would do 500MBit per half second, 250Mbit per quarter second etc. I imagine at certain units of time, this is no longer linear. Perhaps this is set by ethernet frequencies, system clock speeds, interrupt timers etc. I am sure this varies depending on the system -- but does anyone have more information or whitepapers on this? One of the main reasons I am curious is to understand output drops on interfaces. Even if the speed per second is much lower than the interface can handle -- perhaps there are spikes that cause drops for only small numbers of milliseconds. Perhaps various coalescing would hide this effect -- or perhaps increase it on the receiving interface? Do queues make a difference here? Example: So given if this is linear down to the MS we would have 1Mbit/MS, and if Wireshark isn't distorting what I see, should I see drops when I have a spike beyond 1Mbit?

Hosting options for data-enabled web application

I am independently developing an asp.net business application with a MySQL database. I currently have a Windows web hosting account which includes MySQL and MS SQL as installed supported options. I am not yet finally committed to using MySQL and I want to keep my options open to evaluate MS SQL and possibly other options such as PostGreSQL later when more of the business logic is in place - my data access layer will handle the database connectivity. The web hosting setup I have now is fine for development purposes, but if in future I want to use, say, PostGreSQL Server, and a level of usage of, say, 10,000 hits per day concentrated in business hours, I'm assuming I'll need a dedicated server. But in that case, should I just install PostGreSQL on the dedicated server, or is best practice to have a separate database server - perhaps locked down so that it can only be accessed through the web server? And supposing it was only 2000 hits a day - how would that change things? I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me in the direction of a useful guide to these sorts of issues. Naturally if I start paying for separate servers, I would like to know exactly why I'm doing it and what the performance issues and thresholds are.

How can I stop outlook 2003 from crashing?

XP Outlook 2003 keeps crashing, sometimes freezing my whole computer. The STR: Have Outlook 2003 running (with the added "app" LOOKOUT for search and a pop mail as well as MS mail set up. The program loads and displays my reminders. I minimize the reminders. Outlook displays my email list. I have the "Reading pane" set to display right. There is often junk in my junk folder. When I click on the MS mail junk folder, there is sometimes junk with a blank description. Clicking on this to select and delete it is when the program is virtually certain to crash. Often when I reboot the program, the reading pane is again reset to the default, which is "no reading pane". If I change it back and then again click on the message the program often crashes. If I don't set the reading pane but select the message(s), they can be selected and removed. I then set the reading pane and things are okay for a period. This has been going on for some time now. As a part of trying to solve it, I did a deep scan with a number of "root kit" virus-removers. One did find 2 related root kit viruses and removed them. Ram seems okay, HDD shows okay. As I write this I realize that one thing I haven't tried is removing and re-installing LOOKOUT. I will do that now. Any other ideas or even better, solutions, would be most welcome.

Strange 3-second tcp connection latencies (Linux, HTTP)

Our webservers with static content are experiencing strange 3 second latencies occasionally. Typically, an ApacheBench run ( 10000 requests, concurrency 1 or 40, no difference, but keepalive off) looks like this: Connection Times (ms) min mean[+/-sd] median max Connect: 2 10 152.8 3 3015 Processing: 2 8 34.7 3 663 Waiting: 2 8 34.7 3 663 Total: 4 19 157.2 6 3222 Percentage of the requests served within a certain time (ms) 50% 6 66% 7 75% 7 80% 7 90% 9 95% 11 98% 223 99% 225 100% 3222 (longest request) I have tried many things: - Apache2 2.2.9 with worker or prefork MPM, no difference (with KeepAliveTimeout 10-15) - Nginx 0.6.32 - various tcp parameters (net.core.somaxconn=3000, net.ipv4.tcp_sack=0, net.ipv4.tcp_dsack=0) - putting the files/DocumentRoot on tmpfs - shorewall on or off (i.e. empty iptables or not) - AllowOverride None is on for /, so no .htaccess checks (verified with strace) - the problem persists whether the webservers are accessed directly or through a Foundry load balancer Kernel is 2.6.32 (Debian Lenny backports), but it occurred with 2.6.26 also. IPv6 is enabled, but not used. Does the issue look familiar to anyone? Help/suggestions are much appreciated. It sounds a bit like a SYN,ACK packet getting lost or ignored.

Hi, I've created a site basic definition that uses different master and default pages. Everything works quite well except for whenever I create a new site based on the definition I receive the following error when browsing to the new site: [COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action. Tools to Help Post Content On Your WordPress Blog

Now that you’ve got a nice blog, you want to do more with it and start posting content. Here we look at some tools that will allow you to post directly to your WordPress blog. Writing a new blog post is easy with WordPress as we saw in our previous post about Starting your own WordPress blog. The web editor gives you a lot of features and even lets you edit your post’s source code if you enjoy hacking HTML. There are other tools that will allow you to post content, here we look at how you can post with dedicated apps, browser plugins, and even by email. Windows Live Writer Windows Live Writer (part of the Windows Live Essentials Suite) is a great app for posting content to your blog. This free program for Microsoft lets you post content to a variety of blogging services, including Blogger, Typepad, LiveJournal, and of course WordPress. You can write blog posts directly from its Word-like editor, complete with pictures and advanced formatting. Even if you’re offline, you can still write posts and save them for when you’re online again. For more information about installing Live writer, check out our article on how to Install Windows Live Essentials In Windows 7. Once Live Writer is installed, open it to add your blog. If you already had Live Writer installed and configured for a blog, you can add your new blog, too. Just click your blog’s name in the top right corner, and select “Add blog account”. Select “Other blog service” to add your WordPress blog to Writer, and click Next. Enter your blog’s web address, and your username and password. Check Remember my password so you don’t have to enter it every time you write something. Writer will analyze your blog and setup your account. During the setup process it may ask to post a temporary post. This will let you preview blog posts using your blog’s real theme, which is helpful, so click Yes. Finally, add your Blog’s name, and click Finish. You can now use the rich editor to write and add content to a new blog post. Select the Preview tab to see how your post will look on your blog… Or, if you’re a HTML geek, select the Source tab to edit the code of your blog post. From the bottom of the window, you can choose categories, insert tags, and even schedule the post to publish on a different day. Live Writer is fully integrated with WordPress; you’re not missing anything by using the desktop editor. If you want to edit a post you’ve already published, click the Open button and select the post. You can chose and edit any post, including ones you published via the web interface or other editors. Add Multimedia Content to your Posts with Live Writer Back in the Edit tab, you can add pictures, videos and more from the sidebar. Select what you want to insert. Pictures If you insert a picture, you can add many nice borders and designs to it. Or, you can even add artistic effects from the Effects tab in the sidebar. Photo Gallery If you want to post several pictures, say some of your vacation shots, then inserting a picture gallery may be the best option. Select Insert Photo Gallery in the sidebar, and then choose the pictures you want in the gallery. Once the gallery is inserted, you can choose from several styles to showcase your pictures. When you post the blog, you will be asked to sign in with your Windows Live ID as the gallery pictures will be stored in the free Skydrive storage service. Your blog readers can see the preview of your pictures directly on your blog, and then can view each individual picture, download them, or see a slideshow online via the link. Video If you want to add a video to your blog post, select Video from the sidebar as above. You can select a video that’s already online, or you can choose a new video from file and upload it via YouTube directly from Windows Live Writer. Note that you will have to sign in with your YouTube account to upload videos to YouTube, so if you’re not logged in you’ll be prompted to do so when you click Insert. Microsoft Office Word Word 2007 and 2010 also let you post content directly to your blog. This is especially nice if you’ve already typed up a document and think it would be good on your Blog as well. Check out our in-depth tutorial on posting blog posts via Word 2007 using Word 2007 as a blogging tool. This works in Word 2010 too, except the Office Orb has been replaced by the new Backstage view. So, in Word 2010, to start a new blog post, click File \ New then select Blog post. Proceed as you would in Word 2007 to add your blog settings and post the content you want. Or, if you’ve already written a document and want to post it, select File \ Share (or Save and Send in the final version of Word 2010), and then click Publish as Blog Post. If you haven’t setup your blog account yet, set it up as shown in the Word 2007 article. Post Via Email Most of us use email daily, and already have our favorite email app or service. Whether on your desktop or mobile phone, it’s easy to create rich emails and add content. WordPress lets you generate a unique email address that you can use to easily post content and email to your blog. IIRF reverse proxy problem

Hi everyone, We have a java application ( Atlassian Bamboo) running on port 8085 on Windows 2003. It is accessile as http: //bamboo:8085. I am trying to setup reverse proxy for IIS6 using IIRF so content is accessible via http: //bamboo. It seems that I set it ip correctly, and I can retrieve Status page. I also noticed that I can retrieve http: //bamboo/favicon.ico so I must be very close to the solution.. I wanted to share knowledge of tuning FreeBSD via sysctl.conf/loader.conf/KENCONF. It was initially based on Igor Sysoev's (author of nginx) presentation about FreeBSD tuning up to 100,000-200,000 active connections. Tunings are for FreeBSD-CURRENT. Since 7.2 amd64 some of them are tuned well by default. Why download popup window in browser not showing up when using JAX-RS v.s. standard servlet?

When I try using standard servlet approach, in my browser the popup window shows up asking me whether to open .xls file or save it. I tried the exactly same code via JAX-RS and the browser popup won't show up somehow. Has anyone encounter this mystery?
