• Error creating Rails DB using rake db:create

  Hi- I'm attempting to get my first "hello world" rails example going using the rails' getting started guide on my OSX 10.6.3 box. When I go to execute the first rake db:create command (I'm using mysql) I get: simon@/Users/simon/source/rails/blog/config: rake db:create (in /Users/simon/source/rails/blog) Couldn't create database for {"reconnect"=>false, "encoding"=>"utf8", "username"=>"root", "adapter"=>"mysql", "database"=>"blog_development", "pool"=>5, "password"=>nil, "socket"=>"/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock"}, charset: utf8, collation: utf8_unicode_ci (if you set the charset manually, make sure you have a matching collation) I found plenty of stackoverflow questions addressing this problem with the following advice: Verify that user and password are correct (I'm running w/ no password for root on my dev box) Verify that the socket is correct - I can cat the socket, so I assume it's correct Verify that the user can create a DB (As you can see root can connect and create a this DB no problem) simon@/Users/simon/source/rails/blog/config: mysql -uroot -hlocalhost Welcome to the MySQL monitor. • Using JBoss EL with Websphere

  Hey, I'm doing a project which is going to run on Websphere. I'm using JSF/Facelets/Richfaces for this project. I want to use the JBoss EL implementation as it allows calling methods with parameters from EL etc. ... usually this is accomplished by getting the JBoss EL jar and then putting this in the web.xml: <context-param> <param-name>com.sun.faces.expressionFactory</param-name> <param-value>org.jboss.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl</param-value> </context-param> However this isn't working ... I don't know if its a problem with Websphere or ...??? I get a stack trace when going to the page saying it can't parse the EL where I have passed a method a parameter: <a4j:commandLink value="Delete" action="#{mcsaAdmin.deleteLanguage(1234)}" /> Looking at the stacktrace it appears to still be using the standard sun EL: Caused by: javax.el.ELException: Error Parsing: #{mcsaAdmin.deleteLanguage(1234)} at com.sun.el.lang.ExpressionBuilder.createNodeInternal(Unknown Source) at com.sun.el.lang.ExpressionBuilder.build(Unknown Source) at com.sun.el.lang.ExpressionBuilder.createMethodExpression(Unknown Source) at com.sun.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl.createMethodExpression(Unknown Source) at com.sun.facelets.tag.TagAttribute.getMethodExpression(TagAttribute.java:141) Note the 'com.sun.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl' instead of 'org.jboss.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl' as specified above ... For instance: using System; using System.Linq; class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var items = new long[] { long.MaxValue - 100, long.MaxValue - 200, long.MaxValue - 300 }; try { var avg = items.Average(); Console.WriteLine(avg); } catch (OverflowException ex) { Console.WriteLine("can't calculate that!"); } Console.ReadLine(); } } Obviously, the mathematical result is 9223372036854775607 (long.MaxValue - 200), but I get an exception there. This is because the implementation (on my machine) to the Average extension method, as inspected by .NET Reflector is: public static double Average(this IEnumerable<long> source) { if (source == null) { throw Error.ArgumentNull("source"); } long num = 0L; long num2 = 0L; foreach (long num3 in source) { num += num3; num2 += 1L; } if (num2 <= 0L) { throw Error.NoElements(); } return (((double) num) / ((double) num2)); } I know I can use a BigInt library (yes, I know that it is included in .NET Framework 4.0, but I'm tied to 3.5). • Binding from View-Model to View-Model of a child User Control in Silverlight? 2 sources - 1 target..

  Hi there, So i have a UserControl for one of my Views and have another 'child' UserControl inside that. The outer 'parent' UserControl has a Collection on its View-Model and a Grid control on it to display a list of Items. I want to place another UserControl inside this UserControl to display a form representing the details of one Item. The outer / parent UserControl's View-Model already has a property on it to hold the currently selected Item and i would like to bind this to a DependancyProperty on the inner / child UserControl. I would then like to bind that DependancyProperty to a property on the child UserControl's View-Model. I can then set the DependancyProperty once in XAML with a binding expression and have the child UserControl do all its work in its View-Model like it should. The code i have looks like this.. • What's all this fuss about?

  Hi guys, At the beginning I want to state that it is not my intention to upset anyone who uses/like language other than C++. I'm saying that due to the fact that on one forum everytime when I've tried to ask questions of similiar nature I was almost always accused of trying to create a raw. Ok that's having done this is my question: I don't understand why java/c# creators thought/think that having something like vm and having source code compiled to bytecode instead of native code is in a long run any advantage. And why having function compiled for a first time when they are invoked is any advantege? And what's the story about write once run everywhere? When I think about the business of having something written once and it can run everywhere - well in theory this is all well. But I know for a fact that in practice it doesn't look that well at all. It is rather like write once test everywhere. And why would I preffer something to be compiled on runtime instead of compiletime. If I would have to wait even one hour longer for program to be installed once and for all and all the compilation would be done and nothing would be compiled after that I would preffer that. And I don't really know how it works in the real world (I'm a student never worked in IT business) but for example if I have working program written in C++ for Windows and I have wish to move it to another platform wouldn't I have to take my source code and compile it on desired machine? So in other words isn't that rather problem of having compiler which will compile source code on different machines (as far as I'm concerned there is just one C++ and source code will look identical in every machine). And last but not least if you think about it how many programs they are which are really word porting? I personnally can think of 3 maybe four.

• javax.validation.ConstraintViolationException: validation failed for classes during update time for groups

  Hello all! I have a Java / Spring MVC 3 application, using Hibernate and a MySQL database. In my controller, I have this source code: Set<ConstraintViolation<Person>> failures = validator.validate(p); if (failures.isEmpty()) { Project project = this.projectService.findProjectById(projectid); Person newPerson = this.personService.addPerson(p); Set<Person> persons = this.personService.getAllPersonsByProjectId(projectid); persons.add(newPerson); project.setPersons(persons); Set<ConstraintViolation<Project>> failures1 = validator.validate(project); if (!failures1.isEmpty()) { System.out.println("ERROR"); } else { System.out.println("NO ERROR"); } this.projectService.updateProject(project); return Collections.singletonMap("person", newPerson); } Project and Person are a many-to-many relation annotated with @manytomany and Project is the mapping owner. The new Person is added, but on the line with this.projectService.updateProject(project); I get an error. What it does it this in a Dao Hibernate implementation: public void updateProject(Project p) { SessionFactory sessionFactory = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory(); Session sess = sessionFactory.getCurrentSession(); Transaction tx = sess.beginTransaction(); sess.update(p); tx.commit(); } It failed on the line tx.commit();. My check with if (!failures1.isEmpty()) { tell me that there are nor errors in my project. So what's wrong here? And why there is a validation of my project? I did not call a validation method... so why is there a org.hibernate.cfg.beanvalidation.BeanValidationEventListener.validate()? I hope, someone can help me how to fix this! Best Regards, Tim. • Oracle rownum in db2 - Java data archiving

  I have a data archiving process in java that moves data between db2 and sybase. FYI - This is not done through any import/export process because there are several conditions on each table that are available on run-time and so this process is developed in java. Right now I have single DatabaseReader and DatabaseWriter defined for each source and destination combination so that data is moved in multiple threads. I guess I wanted to expand this further where I can have Multiple DatabaseReaders and Multiple DatabaseWriters defined for each source and destination combination. So, for example if the source data is about 100 rows and I defined 10 readers and 10 writer, each reader will read 10 rows and give them to the writer. I hope process will give me extreme performance depending on the resources available on the server [CPU, Memory etc]. But I guess the problem is these source tables do not have primary keys and it is extremely difficult to grab rows in multiple sets. Oracle provides rownum concept and i guess the life is much simpler there....but how about db2? How can I achieve this behavior with db2? Is there a way to say fetch first 10 records and then fetch next 10 records and so on? Any suggestions / ideas ? Db2 Version - DB2 v8.1.0.144 Fix Pack Num - 16 Linux

  I've created a Java project from existing source with an Ant build script in Eclipse. I cannot run my project because Eclipse tells me that there is at least one error in it. Now, I know that the project runs fine on the command line, so I suspect an Eclipse configuration error. As far as I can tell, the only feedback that I have from Eclipse is a little red X on my project in the Package Explorer window and dialog window when I try to run the project says there are errors in the project This is all wonderful, but what is the error? Is there a "show me the next error" button somewhere? In the past, on other Eclipse projects, I've notice other little red X's on folders containing source files with errors, the little red X's appear on the source files as well. I scanned (manually) through all of the source files and I haven't found any other red X's (again, where is the "next error" button?). If I select the "Proceed" button I am greeted with a java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError for my main class, which makes me suspect a classpath issue. I've checked the classpath, and I'm fairly certain that it's correct. Is there a way to see the exact jvm command line that Eclipse is invoking? I realize that it might be invoking the JVM programmatically, and not on a "real" command line. In any case, is there a way, other than the run configuration dialog, to see what is actually happening when I hit the "Proceed" button?

• How do I build BugTrap?

  I am trying to build the Itellesoft BugTrap source using Visual Studio 2008. I have downloaded and unziped the BugTrap source and the zlib source. I navigated down to ./BugTrap/Win32/BugTrap and opened BugTrap.sln (suggest by the author here). I used Build-Build Solution and the build failed with a compiler error: fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'zip.h': No such file or directory I opened the project properties and added the path to the zlib-vc/zlib/include folder to the list of "Additional Include Directories" and tried to build again. The second build attempt failed with a linker error: fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'zlibSD.lib' I opened the zlib project and built the source. The zlib build succeeded. However, the bin directory does not contain a zlibSD.lib. The closest file in name is zlibMSD.lib. This poster on CodeProject seemed to have the same problem I did. But there is no resolution posted. Hopefully someone out there has experience building this project and can point me in the right direction, I've played with the binary distribution and it seems really slick.

  Installing Mercurial on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard I installed Mercurial 1.3.1 on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from source using the following: cd ~/src curl -O http://mercurial.selenic.com/release/mercurial-1.3.1.tar.gz tar xzvf mercurial-1.3.1.tar.gz cd mercurial-1.3.1 make ALL sudo make install This installs the site-packages files for Mercurial in /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/. I know that installing Mercurial from the Mac Disk Image will install the files into /Library/Python/2.6/site-packages/, which is the site-packages directory for the Mac OS X default Python install. I have Python 2.6.2+ installed as a Framework with its site-packages directory in: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages With Mercurial installed this way, I have to issue: PYTHONPATH=/usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages:"${PYTHONPATH}" in order to get Mercurial to work. Questions How can I install Mercurial from source with the site-packages in a different directory? Is there an advantage or disadvantage to having the site-packages in the current location? Would it be better in one of the Python site-package directories that already exist? Do I need to be concerned about virtualenv working correctly since I have modified PYTHONPATH (or any other conflicts for that matter)? • Load Images in WPF application

  I am not familiar with WPF, and I just feel quite confusing. I am trying to create a little computer game, and there are elements I want to display dynamically. I use Image class and add the images to a canvas. But I'm not sure whether it's a good practice. I feel that adding controls to canvas seem to be a little wired. And I'm a little concerned about the performance, because I may need many images. The real problem is, I can't load the images from the image files. I see an example in a text book like this (XMAL): <Image Panel.ZIndex="0" Margin="0,0,0,0" Name ="image1"> <Image.Source> <BitmapImage UriSource="Bell.gif" /> </Image.Source> </Image> Where Bell.gif is added into the project. And I tried to copy this in code to create an image. new Image { Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri("Blockade.bmp"))} But I got invalid Uri exception. After some search in the Internet, I found that loading resources dynamically seems to be difficult. Can I load the files added to the project dynamically? If I use absolute path then it's OK. But I can't expect every computer will put the files in the same location. Can I use relative path? I tried new Image { Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(@"Pictures\Blank Land.bmp", UriKind.Relative)) } But it doesn't work. (The image is blank) Thanks.
