  I tried to install minidlna on my machine but it appeared to me that it's not in repositories anymore. Well then I decided to compile it myself. After downloading version 1.1.3 I tried to compile but I needed libav headers which I couldn't install via apt - no idea why there has been a lot of broken packages: $ sudo apt-get install libavcodec-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. • How do I refresh Disk Utility?

  I do a lot of live system building, which eventually involves imaging a USB drive with the built binary image: dd if=binary.img of=/dev/sdX sync ...where /dev/sdX is a USB drive. As part of my workflow, I like to have Ubuntu's Disk Utility open so I can verify the drive letter and unmount anything that gets mounted automatically. I also use it to create extra partitions for persistence. The trouble is, after writing the image to the device — and even after the sync operation — Disk Utility doesn't show the new partition. It just shows free space. GParted sees it and fdisk sees it. Even after closing and opening Disk Utility, it still shows only free space. If I click "Safe Removal" and physically unplug and replug the USB drive, Disk Utility will then see the partition. Why do I need to remove and re-insert the drive for Disk Utility to see the partitions on it? Can I force Disk Utility to update its information without needing to do this? (using Disk Utility 3.0.2 under Ubuntu 11.10.)

• Cannot install icaclient due to problem with ia32-libs

  I have a problem installing the package icaclient on 13.10 Saucy Salamander 64bit. It seems that there is a problem with ia32-libs and other dependencies. marc@PinballWizard:~$ sudo dpkg -i Downloads/icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb [sudo] password for marc: Selecting previously unselected package icaclient. Unpacking icaclient (from .../icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb) ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of icaclient: icaclient depends on ia32-libs; however: Package ia32-libs is not installed. icaclient depends on lib32z1; however: Package lib32z1 is not installed. icaclient depends on lib32asound2; however: Package lib32asound2 is not installed. dpkg: error processing icaclient (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: icaclient Hence, other workarounds seem not to work. I followed the instructions here - and for the last two Ubuntu releases it was surely no problem. • Go Big or Go Home

  For those who don’t know, Oracle sponsors a group called “OWL” – Oracle Women’s Leadership - and the purpose of the group is to create local and global opportunities that support, educate and empower current and future women leaders at Oracle. This week, I had the opportunity to attend the Denver OWL roadshow, and I was really impressed with the quality of speakers and interactions that I experienced. One theme that arose throughout the day was that of “Lean In.” In a nutshell, “Lean In” requires you to take advantage of the opportunities that you’re given. One of my personal mantras is “Go big or go home."  That is, if you’re not willing to give it your all, don’t do it at all. Regardless of how you phrase it, it’s a life lesson that I believe needs to be tossed in our face every so often simply, if for no other reason, to get our attention. You are given a finite amount of time in your life; in your job role; in your interactions with others. Do you make the most of the opportunities given to you every day? Or do you believe that life just happens, and you have to deal with whatever is handed to you? I have a challenge for you. Set aside any concerns or fears you have about something and Lean In. Make the most of an opportunity presented to you…or make your own opportunity! If you start with just one thing, you’ll start building a mindset to make the most of additional opportunities. Not only will you be better for leaning in, but I’m betting that those around you will be better for it as well.

  When trying to build a package for bluelog, Debuild give several errors. In the past, I've used checkinstall to quickly build crude packages. I am now trying to do it the right way and upload to a PPA. • Trouble installing Rabbit VCS for nautilus

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and following instructions mentioned here to install Rabbit VCS. I added the PPA properly, did a sudo apt-get update and ran sudo apt-get install rabbitvcs-core rabbitvcs-nautilus rabbitvcs-thunar rabbitvcs-gedit rabbitvcs-cli There were dependency issues and I googled a bit and found out that I need to install RabbitVCS only for nautilus as that is the default file manager for Ubuntu. So I ran the install commands separately for rabbitvcs-core, rabbitvcs-gedit and rabbitvcs-cli. Now my understanding is that those are installed properly. • Top 5 Developer Enabling Nuggets in MySQL 5.6

  MySQL 5.6 is truly a better MySQL and reflects Oracle's commitment to the evolution of the most popular and widelyused open source database on the planet.  The feature-complete 5.6 release candidate was announced at MySQL Connect in late September and the production-ready, generally available ("GA") product should be available in early 2013.  While the message around 5.6 has been focused mainly on mass appeal, advanced topics like performance/scale, high availability, and self-healing replication clusters, MySQL 5.6 also provides many developer-friendly nuggets that are designed to enable those who are building the next generation of web-based and embedded applications and services. Boiling down the 5.6 feature set into a smaller set, of simple, easy to use goodies designed with developer agility in mind, these things deserve a quick look:Subquery Optimizations Using semi-JOINs and late materialization, the MySQL 5.6 Optimizer delivers greatly improved subquery performance. Specifically, the optimizer is now more efficient in handling subqueries in the FROM clause; materialization of subqueries in the FROM clause is now postponed until their contents are needed during execution. Additionally, the optimizer may add an index to derived tables during execution to speed up row retrieval. Internal tests run using the DBT-3 benchmark Query #13, shown below, demonstrate an order of magnitude improvement in execution times (from days to seconds) over previous versions. select c_name, c_custkey, o_orderkey, o_orderdate, o_totalprice, sum(l_quantity)from customer, orders, lineitemwhere o_orderkey in (                select l_orderkey                from lineitem                group by l_orderkey                having sum(l_quantity) > 313  )  and c_custkey = o_custkey  and o_orderkey = l_orderkeygroup by c_name, c_custkey, o_orderkey, o_orderdate, o_totalpriceorder by o_totalprice desc, o_orderdateLIMIT 100;What does this mean for developers?  For starters, simplified subqueries can now be coded instead of complex joins for cross table lookups: SELECT title FROM film WHERE film_id IN (SELECT film_id FROM film_actor GROUP BY film_id HAVING count(*) > 12); And even more importantly subqueries embedded in packaged applications no longer need to be re-written into joins.  This is good news for both ISVs and their customers who have access to the underlying queries and who have spent development cycles writing, testing and maintaining their own versions of re-written queries across updated versions of a packaged app.The details are in the MySQL 5.6 docs. Online DDL OperationsToday's web-based applications are designed to rapidly evolve and adapt to meet business and revenue-generationrequirements. As a result, development SLAs are now most often measured in minutes vs days or weeks. For example, when an application must quickly support new product lines or new products within existing product lines, the backend database schema must adapt in kind, and most commonly while the application remains available for normal business operations.  MySQL 5.6 supports this level of online schema flexibility and agility by providing the following new ALTER TABLE online DDL syntax additions:  CREATE INDEX DROP INDEX Change AUTO_INCREMENT value for a column ADD/DROP FOREIGN KEY Rename COLUMN Change ROW FORMAT, KEY_BLOCK_SIZE for a table Change COLUMN NULL, NOT_NULL Add, drop, reorder COLUMN Again, the details are in the MySQL 5.6 docs. Key-value access to InnoDB via Memcached APIMany of the next generation of web, cloud, social and mobile applications require fast operations against simple Key/Value pairs. At the same time, they must retain the ability to run complex queries against the same data, as well as ensure the data is protected with ACID guarantees. With the new NoSQL API for InnoDB, developers have allthe benefits of a transactional RDBMS, coupled with the performance capabilities of Key/Value store.MySQL 5.6 provides simple, key-value interaction with InnoDB data via the familiar Memcached API.  Implemented via a new Memcached daemon plug-in to mysqld, the new Memcached protocol is mapped directly to the native InnoDB API and enables developers to use existing Memcached clients to bypass the expense of query parsing and go directly to InnoDB data for lookups and transactional compliant updates.  The API makes it possible to re-use standard Memcached libraries and clients, while extending Memcached functionality by integrating a persistent, crash-safe, transactional database back-end.  The implementation is shown here:So does this option provide a performance benefit over SQL?  Internal performance benchmarks using a customized Java application and test harness show some very promising results with a 9X improvement in overall throughput for SET/INSERT operations:You can follow the InnoDB team blog for the methodology, implementation and internal test cases that generated these results here. New Instrumentation in Performance SchemaThe MySQL Performance Schema was introduced in MySQL 5.5 and is designed to provide point in time metrics for key performance indicators.  MySQL 5.6 improves the Performance Schema in answer to the most common DBA and Developer problems.  New instrumentations include: Statements/Stages What are my most resource intensive queries? Where do they spend time? Table/Index I/O, Table Locks Which application tables/indexes cause the most load or contention? Users/Hosts/Accounts Which application users, hosts, accounts are consuming the most resources? Network I/O What is the network load like? How long do sessions idle? Summaries Aggregated statistics grouped by statement, thread, user, host, account or object. The MySQL 5.6 Performance Schema is now enabled by default in the my.cnf file with optimized and auto-tune settings that minimize overhead (< 5%, but mileage will vary), so using the Performance Schema ona production server to monitor the most common application use cases is less of an issue.  In addition, new atomic levels of instrumentation enable the capture of granular levels of resource consumption by users, hosts, accounts, applications, etc. for billing and chargeback purposes in cloud computing environments.The MySQL docs are an excellent resource for all that is available and that can be done with the 5.6 Performance Schema. Better Condition Handling - GET DIAGNOSTICSMySQL 5.6 enables developers to easily check for error conditions and code for exceptions by introducing the new MySQL Diagnostics Area and corresponding GET DIAGNOSTICS interface command. The Diagnostic Area can be populated via multiple options and provides 2 kinds of information:Statement - which provides affected row count and number of conditions that occurredCondition - which provides error codes and messages for all conditions that were returned by a previous operation The addressable items for each are: The new GET DIAGNOSTICS command provides a standard interface into the Diagnostics Area and can be used via the CLI or from within application code to easily retrieve and handle the results of the most recent statement execution.  An example of how it is used might be:mysql> DROP TABLE test.no_such_table; ERROR 1051 (42S02): Unknown table 'test.no_such_table' mysql> GET DIAGNOSTICS CONDITION 1 -> @p1 = RETURNED_SQLSTATE, @p2 = MESSAGE_TEXT; mysql> SELECT @p1, @p2; +-------+------------------------------------+| @p1   | @p2                                | +-------+------------------------------------+| 42S02 | Unknown table 'test.no_such_table' | +-------+------------------------------------+ Options for leveraging the MySQL Diagnotics Area and GET DIAGNOSTICS are detailed in the MySQL Docs.While the above is a summary of some of the key developer enabling 5.6 features, it is by no means exhaustive. • 11 ADF Mobile Apps in 30 Hours

  The Oracle ADF Mobile team took part in a special "hackathon" this weekend, where 11 teams of new college hires who joined Oracle lately spent 30 hours building enterprise mobile applications leveraging ADF Mobile. One important thing to note - none of the participants worked with Oracle ADF Mobile before! In fact 90% of them didn't develop with ADF previously. All they had is a 2 hour training session before the event - and that's all they needed. From that point on they were able to build great cross device mobile applications. So what did they build? White (born Jerome White) is an American politician and journalist, reporting for the World Socialist Web Site.  White's Presidential campaign keeps four core components: * International unity in the working class * Social equality * Opposition to imperialist militarism and assault on democratic rights * Opposition to the political subordination of the working class to the Democrats and Republicans The White-Scherrer ticket is currently undergoing a review by the Wisconsin election committee concerning the ballot listing of the party for the 2012 Presidential elections. White has visited Canada, Germany, and Sri Lanka to campaign for socialism and an international working class movement. The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) is a Trotskyist political party in the United States, one of several Socialist Equality Parties around the world affiliated to the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI). The ICFI publishes daily news articles, perspectives and commentaries on the World Socialist Web Site. The party held public conferences in 2009 and 2010. It led an inquiry into utility shutoffs in Detroit, Michigan earlier in 2010, after which it launched a Committee Against Utility Shutoffs.   I am building a deferred rendering engine and I have a question. The article I took the sample code from suggested computing screen position of the pixel as follows: VertexShaderFunction() { ... output.Position = mul(worldViewProj, input.Position); output.ScreenPosition = output.Position; } PixelShaderFunction() { input.ScreenPosition.xy /= input.ScreenPosition.w; float2 TexCoord = 0.5f * (float2(input.ScreenPosition.x,-input.ScreenPosition.y) + 1); ... } The question is what if I compute the position in the vertex shader (which should optimize the performance as VSF is launched significantly less number of times than PSF) would I get the per-vertex lighting insted. Here is how I want to do this: VertexShaderFunction() { ... output.Position = mul(worldViewProj, input.Position); output.ScreenPosition.xy = output.Position / output.Position.w; } PixelShaderFunction() { float2 TexCoord = 0.5f * (float2(input.ScreenPosition.x,-input.ScreenPosition.y) + 1); ... } What exactly happens with the data I pass from VS to PS? How exactly is it interpolated? Will it give me the right per-pixel result in this case? I tried launching the game both ways and saw no visual difference. Is my assumption right? Thanks. P.S. I am optimizing the point light shader, so I actually pass a sphere geometry into the VS.

• How to force browsers to always reload xslt files?

  Related: Apache: How can I force the browser to reload CSS files? I'm building an xml page (on an apache2) that is supposed to be translated to xhtml by the browser, so my server also serves a main.xslt which is used as stylesheet by the xml file, similar to the scenario with the css files in the linked question. However, none of tricks provided in either that answer, nor some issues on SO solve the issue for Opera. While Firefox responds to F5 by fetching not only the xml file but also the xslt file, Opera only reloads the xml file. I tried both, setting the Last-Modified HTTP header via an .htaccess file and using the expires module of apache2. This is what my .htaccess looks right now: AddType text/xsl;charset=utf-8 .xslt ExpiresByType text/xsl "modification plus 1 second" Header set Last-Modified "Wed, 08 Jan 2000 23:11:55 GMT" #Header set Last-Modified "Wed, 08 Jan 2020 23:11:55 GMT" If I open the xsl myself and manually reload it, the xml presentation is updated as well, but this is tedious for development. Note: There is no php or any kind of scripting involved. Everything is static.

• After force-installing a 32-bit deb failed, how can I install the 64-bit version?

  I tried to dpkg -i --force-architecture google-earth-stable_i386.deb and it failed. But now when I try to install the amd64.deb it fails saying dpkg: error processing google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb (--install): google-earth-stable: 6.2.2.6613-r0 (Multi-Arch: no) is not co-installable with google-earth-stable:i386 6.2.2.6613-r0 (Multi-Arch: no) which is currently installed Errors were encountered while processing: google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb somehow it thinks the i386 version is installed. No google-earth files or directories even exist. sudo dpkg --configure -a outputs: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of google-earth-stable:i386: google-earth-stable:i386 depends on lsb-core (= 3.2). dpkg: error processing google-earth-stable:i386 (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: google-earth-stable:i386 so it does exist in some capacity. sudo apt-get -f install does nothing out of the ordinary: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded. The weird thing is that synaptic doesn't show any google earth package available let alone installed, nothing under the broken filter either. I have also tried sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean So, my question: How can I get rid of this issue?

• Game software design

  I have been working on a simple implementation of a card game in object oriented Python/HTML/Javascript and building on the top of Django. At this point the game is in its final stage of development but, while spotting a big issue about how I was keeping the application state (basically using a global variable), I reached the point that I'm stuck. The thing is that ignoring the design flaw, in a single-threaded environment such as under the Django development server, the game works perfectly. While I tried to design classes cleanly and keep methods short I now have in front of me an issue that has been keeping me busy for the last 2 days and that countless print statements and visual debugging hasn't helped me spot. The reason I think has to do with some side-effects of functions and to solve it I've been wondering if maybe refactoring the code entirely with static classes that keep no state and just passing the state around might be a good option to keep side-effects under control. Or maybe trying to program it in a functional programming style (although I'm not sure Python allows for a purely functional style). I feel that now there's already too many layers that the software (which I plan to make incredibly more complex by adding non trivial features) has already become unmanageable. How would you suggest I re-take control of my code-base that (despite being still only at < 1000 LOC) seems to have taken a life of its own?

• How to improve relationships between consultants and staff programmers

  I have been a consultant for a small software consulting firm for quite some time now. Our normal business model is not staff augmentation, but such that we find clients who need assistance in building a solution of some kind and then send in a team who can build that solution, work with the existing IT staff, train all involved on supportting that solution, then move on to the next job. We, of course, are still around for any needed ongoing support. We have a great reputation in our area and have been very successful in implementing the solutions that we provide. However, I have noticed a common theme for most of our projects. When we get on-site, there is generally a "stressed" relationship between our team and many of the IT staff currently at the client. I understand completely that there may be some anxiety about our arrival and that defenses can come up when we are around. Many of the folks are understanding and easy to work with, but there are usually some who will not work well with us at all, and who can quickly become a project risk in many ways. We try to go in with open minds and good attitudes, and try NOT to be arrogent or condecending. We generally get deployed when there is a mess to clean up - but we understand that there were reasons decisions were made that got them in the bind they are...so we just try to determine the next step forward and move on. My question is this - I'd like to hear from the IT staff and programmers out there who have had consultants in - what are the things that consultants do that fire up negative feelings and attitudes? What can we do better to make the relationship better, not only in the beginning, but as the project moves forward?

• Efficient solution for multiplayer space partioning?

  This question is a little tricky, but I will try to make it clear, Lets say I am building an online game, not in a mmo scale, but gladly supporting as many players as possible, in a authoritative server approach, and I want really big worlds with lots of AI simulated enemies. I am aware of a few strategies to save server's CPU by subdividing the space and not processing what doesn't need processing. I 've already split the world by regions, that will require loading times and small transitions, which i think is important to mantain the quality of gameplay when playing locally (alone or even with a couple of friends) because the players won't normally be in more than one or two regions. But even a region can become pretty big, and have a lot of NPC simulating at a time, how do I handle this without screwing the player's experience? Approaches like one server per region and alike are not in the table. I am mainly looking for data structures to hold hordes of enemies, and even peaceful NPC. To finalize the question, please note that vehicles exist, therefore its considerably fast to travel within a region, influencing the "when" to cull areas. Sorry for the confusing question, thanks

• Getting into driver development for linux [closed]

  Right now, I've been learning about writing device-drivers for linux 3.2 kernel for about 2 months. So far I have been able program simple char drivers that only read and write to a fictitious dev structure like a file, but now I'm moving to more advance concepts. The new material I've learned about includes I/O port manipulation, memory management, and interrupts. I feel that I have a basic understanding of overall driver operation but, there is still so much that I don't know. My question is this, given that I have the basic theory of how to write a dev-driver for a piece of hardware ... how long would it take to actually develop the skills of writing actual software that companies would want to employ? I plan on getting involved in an open-source project and building a portfolio. Also what type of beginner drivers could I write for hardware that would best help me develop my skills? I was thinking that taking on a project where I design my own key logger would easy and a good assignment to help me understand how IO ports and interrupts are used. I may want to eventually specialize in writing software for video cards or network devices though these devices seem beyond my understanding at the moment. Thanks for any help
