• Should i use HttpResponse.End() for a fast webapp?

  HttpResponse.End() seems to throw an exception according to msdn. Right now i have the choice of returning a value to say end thread (it only goes 2 functions deep) or i can call end(). I know that throwing exceptions is significantly slower (read the comment for a C#/.NET test) so if i want a fast webapp should i consider not calling it when it is trivially easy to not call it? -edit- I do have a function call in certain functions and in the constructor in classes to ensure the user is logged in. So i call HttpResponse.End() in enough places although hopefully in regular site usage it doesn't occur too often.

• How to deal with databases for websites written in Java, more specifically Wicket?

  Hi there. I'm new to website development using Java but I've got started with Wicket and make a little website. I'd like to expand on what I've already made (a website with a form, labels and links) and implement database connectivity. I've looked at a couple of examples, in example Mystic Paste, and I see that they're using Hibernate and Spring. I've never touched Hibernate or Spring before and to be honest the heavy use of annotations scare me a little bit as I haven't really made use of them before, with the exception of supressing warnings and overriding. At this point I have one Connection object which I set up in the WebApplication class upon initialization. I then retrieve this connection object whenever I need to perform queries. I don't know if this is a bad approach or not for a production web application. All help is greatly appreciated.

  I usually define my string variables in vb.net as Dim f_sName as string=String.Empty f_sName = "foo" Given the immutable nature of strings in .net, is there a better way to initialize strings and deal with the "Variable 'f_sName ' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime." warning? Also for classes that do not have constructors which accept no arguments such as System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream, what is the best way to define and initialize a variable of that type?   At the moment I am using this code to check if the database is accessible: public bool IsDatabaseOnline(string con) { bool isConnected = false; SQLConnection connect = null; try { connect = new SQLConnection(con); connect.Open(); isConnected = true; } catch (Exception e) { isConnected = false; } finally { if (connect != null) connect.Close(); } return isConnected; } While this code works fine, there is a disadvantage. If the server is not online it spends about 4 full seconds trying to open the connection before deciding that it is not available. Is there a way to test the connection without trying to actually opening it and waiting for the timeout? Something like a database-equivalent of ping?

  I have written an application and added 2 contacts on emulator, but i am not able to update their names on android 2.1, code is working on android 1.6 platform with the following code. ContentValues contactValues = new ContentValues(); contactValues.put(Contacts.People.NAME, firstName+" "+lastName); getContentResolver().update(UpdateContactUri, contactValues, null, null); In android 1.6 i am getting Uri for those two contacts are "content:// contacts/people/1" and "content://contacts/people/2". but in 2.1 I am getting these values are "content://contacts/people/8" and "content://contacts/people/9" and while updating its giving "java.IllegalArgumentException, Empty values" exception. When i tried to put a static Uri like "content://contacts/people/1", code was debugged sucessfully but contact was not updated. How can i resolve it, why i am not getting uri like 1.6 platform ? • Cant open Nerd Dinner 1.0 VS 2008 SP1 MVC 2

  I was trying to download some ASP.NET MVC Sample application to learn MVC. I tried Music Store and TownHall but they wont open in my VS2008.So I tried the common Nerddinner 1.0 but it gives error "The project Type is not supported by this installation" . I tried the 3rd Method suggested in the following post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1002907/cant-open-nerddinner-project-in-vs2008 This is about changing the project type GUIDS.Now the project loads but when I run it throws an exception <add assembly="System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> I presume this is happening because the Nerddinner 1.0 is for MVC 1.0 and I have MVC 2.0 installed. How do I proceed now. I have spent a lot of time trying to get an MVC application working on my PC. I am happy if I can get any properly architected , MVC application of medium to high complexity to work on my PC. thanks

  Hi, I'm using swank-clojure in emacs on OSX. I'm able to run a slime session. When I use C-x C-e on a simple form in a .clj file like (+ 7 7) I get an sldb buffer with Unable to resolve symbol: + in this context [Thrown class java.lang.Exception] I'm able to evaluate that form in the slime session directly. I was hoping the form in the clj file would get evaluated in the running slime session. Can someone explain how C-x C-e works in swank-clojure and how I can get the form to be evaluated in the running slime session? Thanks, hhh

  I'm using Hibernate validator 4.1 to validate my entity. I have a dashboard that I can access from the action : viewDashboard. • getResourceAsStream not loading resource in webapp

  I have a web application that uses a library which resides in TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib. This library looks for a properties file at the root of the classpath (in a class called ApplicationConfig): ApplicationConfig.class.getResourceAsStream("/hv-application.properties"); My Tomcat web application contains this properties file. It is in WEB-INF/classes, which is the root of the classpath right? However, at runtime, when it tries to load the properties file, it throws an exception because it can't find it (getResourceAsStream returns null). Everything works fine if my application is a simple, standalone Java application. Does Tomcat cause the getResourceAsStream method to act differently? I know there's a lot of similar questions out there, but none of them have helped unfortunately. Thanks.

• How to disable JSR-303 Hibernate Validation in Spring3

  After putting hibernate-validator.jar and javax.validation-api.jar in my classpath the org.springframework.dao.DataIntegrityViolationException is replaced by org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException and this is causing a lot of issues. I have to put this two jars to be able to upgrade Jersey to 2.4, it has dependency on these two jars. Putting these properties into hibernate.properties file doesn't help, hibernate simply ignores them but it loads the properties on start-up loaded properties from resource hibernate.properties: {hibernate.validator.apply_to_ddl=false,hibernate.validator.autoregister_listeners=false etc} javax.persistence.validation.mode=none hibernate.validator.autoregister_listeners=false hibernate.validator.apply_to_ddl=false I am using Spring 3.2.4 with SessionFactory and mapping resources from hbm.xml files with constraints in it, hibernate 3.6.9.final, hibernate-validator 5.0.final, javax.validator-api 1.1.0.Final I just can't figure out how to disable hibernate validation, any help will be much appreciated.

• DB4o Linq query - How to check for null strings

  Hey there - simple query: var q = (from SomeObject o in container where o.SomeInt > 8 && o.SomeString != null //Null Ref here select o; I always get a null reference exception. If I use String.IsNullOrEmpty(o.SomeString) the query takes about 100 times as long, as if I use && o.SomeString != "" (which is way faster, but obviously not correct). I'm guessing because DB4o needs to activate the objects, in order to pass them in to the IsNullOrEmpty call, and can't use the indexes. My question is, what's a better way to check for nulls in this situation? Is there something like: mystring != Db4o.DBNull.Value, or something? Cheers, Dave

This action is done thousands of times a day, and I get this exception about once every 5 seconds. From what I understand it happens when something changes in the database in the period between creating DataContext and updating it. Am I right? What's the problem here and how can I fix it?

• The Elegant way to handle Cyclic Event in Java ??

  Hi fellows, i think this not a specific problem to me; everybody might have encountered this issue before. To properly illustrate it, here's a simple UI: As you can see, those two spinners are controlling a single variable -- "A". The only difference is that they control it using different views. If i change the top spinner, "A" will be changed and the bottom spinner's value will also be updated accordingly. However, updating the bottom spinner's call (such as setValue) will also trigger another event instructing the top spinner to update based on the bottom spinner's value. Thus creates a bad cycle which can eventually cause a StackOverFlow exception. My previously solution is kinda cumbersome: i placed a guarding boolean to indicate whether the 2nd updating call should be performed. Now i'd like to ask "how can i handle such situation elegantly?" thx

  Hi, I have ASP.NET web service on windows server 2003. I have own certificate authority. I use own client certificate on authentification in web service. I make client certificate. I call web service, everything is ok. Then I revoke this certificate in certification authority. Certificate is in Revoked certificate. I call web service with this certificate, but web service verify this certificate as good, but this certificate is between revoked. I don't know why? Anybody help me please? I use this method on verify certificate. X509Certificate2.Verify Method I don't get any exception, certificate is between revoked, but web service verify this certificate as good.
