• "svchost.exe cannot be allowed through firewall" ftp server

  Alright here's my problem iv recently set up an ftp server and everything works fine except when i try to allow svchost.exe through the firewall, I get the error message "windows cannot allow svchost through firewall". If i disable the firewall there are no problems but i would rather have the firewall up (for obvious reasons) can anyone please tell me why it is not allowing the application through the firewall and how to fix? Or what i may have done wrong to receive this message as all the tutorials iv seen do not have this issue. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Vmware server: Browser does not load user interface

  I have the latest vmware server isntalled on ubuntu 8.04 lts 64 bit. I access the user interface over this url, which matches my ip and port settings: https://10.1.1.99:11222/ui Sometimes it works in fierofox 3.6, but sometimes not. Same in Google Chrome. When it does not work, what happens is that the cert is checked, the browser is loading something, but the result is a white page. Sometimes the favicon of vmware (blue with 3 squares) appears, but only the white page. And sometimes it works. I reload many times, most of the time the whit epage appears again. On some days I succeed. But on many days not. I can give more info if someone tells me what is needed. Please help, we need this badly.

• Search Files (Preferably with index) on Windows 2000 Server

  I have many files on a windows server 2000 machine that is setup to act as a networked disk drive, is there anyway I can index the files and make that index available as a search to more people than just me? Bonus if the index can look inside of documents such as readme.txt? If there is no easy way to do this globaly (for all users) Is there a way I could generate and store an index locally on my computer? If this is the wrong place to ask this question, any advice on community more suited?

• Migrate TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server on the same domain

  I'm in the process of looking into the possibility of moving our TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server from the one it is on at the moment so that we can repurpose the hardware. I've been looking through the Microsoft Documentation over at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404869.aspx, but this assumes that everything is stored on one box (Application and Data tiers). In my setup however, our Data tier is separate to the Application tier and will be staying where it is. I think I should be able to do this but for my own peace of mind, would there be any issues or implications if I merely installed the Application Tier on the new hardware and then connected it to the existing data tier?

• Flash Media Server slow over SSL

  We are using FMS to host a VoD site. We host FMS internally (we do not use a CDN). We recently installed an SSL certificate to alleviate connection issues for clients (they're networks either block or don't support RTMP), however we're noticing that when streaming in RTMPS connections are drastically slower (on the order of Mbps). I know SSL causes some amount of over head but both client and server show almost no signs of exertion. Speedtest.net and a locally hosted speed test confirm that bandwidth is not an issue. I'm really not a network guru, so I'm at a loss as to where to check next. Do any of you have an idea why streaming media would run so slow over SSL?

• IISReset to remote server fails

  I'm attempting to run iisreset 192.168.100.182 (against a Windows Server 2003 machine) from another machine on the same domain (running Windows 7 Professional) and am receiving the following error message: Attempting stop... Restart attempt failed. Access denied, you must be an administrator of the remote computer to use this command. Either have your account added to the administrator local group of the remote computer or to the domain administrator global group. I'm running the command from an elevated command prompt with my domain account added to the Administrators group on the target machine. I've attempted this when being a member of the administrators group both directly and by virtue of membership of a domain group that's a member of the administrators group. I've reviewed the event log on the target machine and it shows a selection of Success Audits for my domain credentials immediately after attempting the iisreset, but no failure audits.

• Time Machine Server on Fedora

  I was just wondering if anyone knew how to/or knew of a good guide to setting up mac Time Machine backup server on a fedora 17 machine. I recently ran into an issue with my HDD and lost all of my data, so I don't want it to ever happen again, as it was quite traumatising, haha! I just want to be able to back all of my data up on my fedora machine from my mac, at scheduled times when I connect to my home network. If anyone could help, it would be fantastic, I searched around on google, but all of the ones I found were for older distros. Thanks guys!

• Documenting sp_ssiscatalog

  What is the best way to document an API? Moreover, what is the best way to document a T-SQL API? Before I try to answer those questions I should explain what I mean by “a T-SQL API”. I think of an API as being a collection of well-defined, known, code modules that provide some notion of a service to whomever uses it; in T-SQL terms I tend to think of a collection of stored procedures and functions as a form of API. Its a loose definition, I admit, and in SQL Server circles we don’t tend to think of stored procedures collectively as an API but if you think about it that’s exactly what they are. The question of how to document a T-SQL API came to my mind as I worked on sp_ssiscatalog. How could I make it easy for people to learn about the capabilities of sp_ssiscatalog without forcing them to dig through the code and find out for themselves? My opening gambit was to write documentation pages on the wiki at http://ssisreportingpack.codeplex.com. That’s kinda useful but it does suffer the disadvantage that someone using sp_ssiscatalog needs to go visit a webpage to read it – I want the documentation to be available wherever the user is using sp_ssiscatalog. Moreover, maintaining the wiki is a real PITA. Intellisense works up to a point, I guess: but that only shows whatever SQL Server knows about the various parameters, which isn’t all that much! I wanted a better way for my API users to learn about its capabilities and so I hit upon the idea of simply using PRINT statements within the code itself to inform the user what options are available; hence I added such PRINT statements in the latest check-in. Now when you execute (for example): EXEC sp_ssiscatalog @operation_type='execs' you can hit F6 a few times to view the messages pane and you shall see something like this: Notice that I’m returning information about all the parameters that can be used to affect the results that just got returned. I really do think this will be very useful to anyone using sp_ssiscatalog; I myself am always forgetting what the parameters are and I wrote the damn thing so I can’t really expect anyone else to remember them. I have not yet made available a release that has these changes in it but when I do I’ll blog about it right here. At the time of writing the latest available release of sp_ssiscatalog is DB v1.0.1.0 but if you want to the latest and greatest simply download it straight from source. • Network Server Cabinets - How does the ventilation work?

  Recently I've been looking at a range of network server cabinets with a mesh door at the rear. At the top of the cabinet are ceiling mounted fans with dust filters attached. These fans suck air out of the cabinet - presumably to remove the hot air that has risen to the top. My question is why do these fans have dust filters? What point do they serve? If the air flow is pulled in by these fans through the mesh door, then surely they are not there to protect the hardware inside from dust? Also, there are other minor grilled gaps around the enclosure, how does this kind of ventilation design work?

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • Still prompted for a password after adding SSH public key to a server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing? • Prevent folder deletes at top level only on Server 2008

  I'm trying to prevent folders moves, really folder delete in NTFS parlance, for series of folders within a network share. So let's say I have: FolderA, FolderB, FolderC. Each folder has various files and subfolders. I want the Domain Users group to have modify access to all files and folders beneath FolderA, FolderB, and FolderC. However I don't want them to be able to delete these three top level folders. The issue we are having right now is people keep accidentally dragging one top level folder into another. I've tried used advanced NTFS permissions to deny domain users delete access to these top level folders, and set the permissions to apply to "This folder only", however it seems to only affect sub-folders, and not the top level. Platform is Server 2008 Standard. Thanks in advance.

• Logging off does not kill process in Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows Server 2003(Enterprise, SP2). My understanding was that any process created by a user will be terminated when the user loggs off the account. But its not happening. I login via Administrator account. Start a simple java process and logoff. But the process is not killed. Is there any configuration for this or something? I am mostly a software programmer and not much in to servers and so I am stuck. I found out that while logging off, 1) Win32 is supposed to send a CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT to all processes started by that user. 2) JVM is supposed to handle this event and terminate the VM. But I can't understand why my java process is not killed when i logoff. Any idea!!!

• Windows 2003 server RRAS on VPC

  I'm trying to setup a L2TP VPN server(to give user access on to all my VPN instance) on a Windows 2003 instance running on my VPC. While trying to enable RRAS I'm getting error, "less than two network interfaces were detected on this machine". Eventually it's because there's only one network interface available, the which has private IP. I have elastic IP assigned to this instance as well. But RRAS can't see this. What should I do to RRAS to be able to see the interface with elastic IP?

• Windows 2003 SP1 terminal server printers Disappear after reboot - HP laserjet 4240

  had working PCL6 laserjet 4240 driver. needed to downgrade to PCl5, tried but did not get clean install. tried again and it seemed to work (this is 2003 enterprise terminal server SP2) Have over 40 working laserjets (5, 4000, 4100 and 18 of the 4240) After normal nightly reboot the 18 4240 printers were 'gone'. Worked w/Microsoft who said bad HP driver issues - weird since they work on other terminal servers. downloaded latest version, etc. from HP site and can NOT get to work. As soon as I install, then do a Net Stop Spool and Net Start Spooler the printer is 'gone'. Current workaround is to use HP 4000 PCL5 drivers for all of these 4240 printers.

• PHP + IIS7 + X64 OS (Windows 7 or Server 2008)

  I'm going to answer my own question here, but I thought this might be important enough to post so that it would be indexed for the next person who runs into my situation. Problem: I can not seem to get PHP code to execute on a x64 bit version ofIIS7, whether it be in my desktop, Windows 7, or the application's final destination on Windows Server 2008. Every time I try and look at a test php document to confirm installation, I only see the source code. I've followed the documentation from PHP, from iis.net, blogs, howtos, just about anywhere I can find that Google would send me. I tried the web installer, tried manual installations instead of the MSI, tried version 5.3.5, tried version 5.2.17, but no matter what, the code would never execute. I even tried registering .eric files with PHP FastCGI Module, but same result, php source code only.

SQL Server 2012 had non-updateable columnstore that required the base table to exist in rowstore form. • Should I be learning Linq, Direct SQL Commands (in .net), EF or other?

  Basically, I have a very good knowledge of plain old SQL coming from Classic ASP programming. Over the past couple of months, I have been learning C# and today was my first full day at MVC 3 (Razor) which I am loving! I need to get back in to Databases and I know that writing SqlCommand everywhere is obviously outdated (although it is nice I can still do it!). I used to go to a great usergroup as an IT Pro and the developer stuff went completely over my head, however I do remember a few things which kept coming up such as LINQ... However, that was some time ago and now the same people on Twitter are saying how out dated it is. I have tried to do research on both and I am clueless as to what direction I should go in, or when to use one over another (if learning both is a good thing). I am more so confused as I thought EF was a part of the .Net Framework, however, reading through the quick start guide, I had to download a component using Nuget. ... Basically I am out of my depth here and just need some honest advice of where to go!

• KB972455 Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2

  Dear people, My Small Business Server 2003 failed to install this update SP2 for WSUS3.0. The update is not available for rollback. WSUS 3.0 is not to be found in my software configscreen or startup menu. Some files have been deleted from the hard drive and last but not least. The service will not run and .NET runtime errors keep flooding my logs. Question. How to remove an update or program which is not listed in add/remove software anymore. Since the update it fails to run WSUS. Event-id: 0 Category: none Source: .NET Runtime ERROR: This error keeps flooding my logs. I am hesitant to roll back to a system restore point since exchange is running on the same disks.... :)

Without depending much on application provider's expertise I want to achieve maximum o/p from linux. W.r.t. that I have certain questions as following: How to find out if there is scope for further tcp fine-tuning (without exhausting available resources) as the benchmark values given by vendor looks poor! Is there any parameter value that is available from OS / network stack that will show me the results. If at all there is scope, how shall I identify & configure OS tcp stack parameters i.e. using sysctl or any specific parameter Post tuning how shall I clearly measure performance enhancement / degradation ?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Maximum Processor Limit Confusion

  As I was looking through the Windows Server 2008 R2 specifications, I saw that the maximum supported processors is 64 sockets for Datacenter addition. This puts the maximum number or cores at 256 (if all sockets are quad cores), which I think it's just silly, but whatever. And now the questions: How does one set something like that up? (Obviously not for me, but humor me) Are there multiple dual socket motherboards running in a giant case with a ton of memory? How does the OS see all of the CPUs if they're on different boards? What would be a real world example of a need to have 64 sockets attached to one operating system vs 32 2 socket servers?

• Windows Home Server Passwords Do Not Match [closed]

  I have a Windows Home Server that chunks along just fine most of the time. I've never bothered to put it on a GPS and so it's vulnerable to power outages that happen a few times a year. This most recent time, it came back and seemed to be fine, but whenever I try to access a shared folder I get "Passwords do not match". They matched before the power went out, and I couldn't update the WHS password since I apparently didn't know the old one. How do I fix this?
