• Is it possible to stream music/video from an Apache server?

  I'm just starting to get into setting up a server. I've set up a basic Apache server to access some songs and movies. When I click one of the songs though, nothing happens. When I click one of the movies, sometimes it will open a new web page and act as though it is going to start playing, but never does. I know Apache is HTTP, not FTP and read somewhere that that could be a problem, but I'm uncertain of the differences. Anyway, is it possible to click on one of the songs and have it start streaming using, for example, Windows Media Player? If so, might someone either explain how to do so or direct me to where I can find it? Any information on retrieving media from an Apache server at this point would be most appreciated. -Edit- I don't know if it matters, but I'm using Windows 7 and Google Chrome

Are there any recommended approaches to take, pitfalls to avoid, or good sample structures of this scenario that you can point to?

• Ubuntu 12.04 boot freezes

  I installed win7 on one of my machines. It works without any problem. Now I can not install Ubuntu 12.04 (11.10, 11.04) because the installation process stops in a very early stage: I can see that ISOLinux was loaded, then I can see some very simple icons, then I can see text messages of the kernel. The last message I can see: [6.177983] sr 5:0:0:0: attached scsi general ss1 type 5 At that point the system stops. I tried different versions (11.04) , I disabled, and then disconnected the hdd, but the same problem occured independently from my actions. I can boot a gparted live cd, but that system can not see my hdd. On the other hand, I can boot the installation cd of the latest stable Debian distribution without any problem, but I would prefer to use Ubuntu, because I use that distribution on all of our machines.s Configuration: Asus P8H61-MLE motheboard, Gigabyte GTS 450, Intel i5, 4gb ram, wd 1T sata hdd Any idea? • Box 2D Collision Question

  I am very new to Box 2D Physics world. I wanted to know how to collide 2 bodies when one is Dynamic and other is Kinematic. The whole Scenario is explained below: I have 3 balls in total. I want to balls to remain in their places and the third ball to be able to move. When the third ball hits the other two balls then they should move according to the speed and direction from which they were hit. My gravity of the world is 0 because I only want z-axis gravity. I would also like some one to point me towards some good tutorials regarding Box 2D basics which is language independent. I hope I have explained my scenario well. Thanks for the help in advance.

• Best practices for including open source code from other public projects?

  If I use an existing open source project that is hosted for example on github within one of my projects, should I check in the code from the other project into my public repo or not? I have mixed feelings about this, #1 I want to give proper credit and attribution to the original developer, and if appropriate I will contribute back any changes I need to make. However given that I have developed / tested against a specific revision of the other projects code, that is the version that I want to distribute to users of my project. Here is the specific use case to illustrate my point. I am looking for a more generalized answer than this specific case. I am developing simple framework using rabbitmq and python for outbound messages that will allow for sending sms, twitter, email, and is extensible to support additional messaging buses as well. There is a project on github that will make the creation and sending of SMS messages developed by another person. When I create my own repo how do I account for the code that I am including from the other project?

• Algorithms for rainfall + river creation in procedurally generated terrain

  I've recently become fascinated by the things that can be done with procedurally terrain and have started experimenting with world building a bit. I'd like to be able to make worlds something like Dwarf fortress with biomes created from meshing together various maps. So first step has been done. Using the diamond-square algorithm I've created some nice hieghtmaps. Next step is I would like to add some water features and have them somewhat realistically generated with rainfall. I've read about a few different approaches such as starting at the high points of the map, and "stepping" down to the lowest neighboring point, pooling/eroding as it works its way down to sea level. Are there any documented algorithms with this or are they more off the cuff? Would love any advice/thoughts.

• View Frustum Alternative

  I am working on a simulation project that requires me to have entities walking around in a 3D world. I have all that working, matrix transformations, etc. I'm at the point where I need what is essentially a view frustum, so I can give each entity a visible area. However, when looking over the calculations required to do it, it seems like a perspective frustum is only required to be able to project it onto a 2D screen. Is there another, easier to code solution, that would function better, such as an orthogonal perspective? Could I just define a shape mathematically and test wether the coordinates of the objects are inside or out? I am not really a 3D coder (and I am doing this all from scratch, not using an engine or anything), so I would like the simplest solution possible for my needs. Thank you!

  I'm creating my first robots.txt and wanted to get a second opinion on it. Basically I have a FTP setup on my board for some special users to transfer files between each other and I do NOT want that included in the search by the bots. I also want to point to my sitemap which gets auto generated by a PHP page. So here is what I have, what else should I include, and if I need to fix anything with it? Also, it's linking to xmlsitemap.php because that generates the sitemap when called. My goal is to allow any search bot crawl the forums to grab meta data. • What is the increase in developer productivity while using Hibernate?

  I was curious to find out the percentage increase in developer's productivity by using Hibernate. We use both Hibernate and NHibernate extensively and find them to be extremely elegant frameworks but haven't undertaken any study to find out the time savings by using them. IMHO, one could get a good 30 to 40% jump in developer productivity as one doesn't have to write the basic CRUD operations and bother about caching. But, are there are any formal case studies which prove that point? I would really appreciate if someone could direct me to a published white paper about some statistics about the productivity gains.

• What kind of spam is this?

  I realize this is a pretty vague question, but I occasionally get spam messages through my contact form on a Drupal 6 site. The contact form does not have any anti-spam protection (i.e. math question). The messages I get are all very similar and just jumbled junk, like below, so I think they're all from the same source. Example: ylsaf0V bpsdfuxnhjjd, [url=http://wwgfsggzgyjyjm.com/]wwgrfgzrgsjyjm[/url], [link=http://xmgvyghcuufvb.com/]xmjyhvyjyfjirovb[/link], http://frgxmdghrgruhfc.com/ Anyway, I'm just wondering what the point of such a message is. All the links are dead, it's illegible, and it's not trying to sell me a product or get me to do anything, so I'm a bit perplexed. Is there any way to tell where they're coming from? And how concerned should I be? To be clear, I'm not asking how to avoid them, I realize just adding a simple math challenge or captcha would likely do the job.

• How to market yourself as a software developer?

  I have noticed that this is a frequent issue among younglings from technical areas such as ours. In the beginning of our careers we simply don't know how to sell ourselves to our employers, and random guy #57 (who is a programmer, but not as good as you - technically) ends up getting a raise/promotion just because he knows how to communicate and market himself better than you. Many have probably seen this happen in the past, and most certainly many more will in the future. What kind of skill/ability (either technical, or of other nature) do you think is relevant to point out when doing a job interview or asking for a raise, besides listing all the programming languages and libraries you know?

• HTML background-size:cover with floating objects

  I have a trivial page with body having an image background, with background-size:cover. I set html { height:100% } to fill up the entire page regardless of the content amount. Up to this point everything worked as expected. I've added a div and set position:absolute; right:0; width:200px; This, again, worked as expected, until I added content. When this div is populated so much that the contents take up more space than the height of the page, the scroll bar appears. Scrolling down reveals that the background image does not actually cover the entire page. This is due to the fact that my div is taller than 100% of the HTML height. How can I address this?

• Set up Java path for terminal

  Many moons ago I cut C code for a living, primarily while maintaining a POP3 server that supported a wide range of OSs (Linux, *BSD, HPUX, VMS ...). I'm planning to polish the rust off my C skills and learn a bit about language implementation by coding a simple FORTH in C. But I'm wondering how (or whether?) have things changed in the C world since 2000. When I think C, I think ... comp.lang.c ANSI C wherever possible (but C89 as C99 isn't that widely supported) gcc -Wall -ansi -pedantic in lieu of static analysis tools Emacs Ctags Autoconf + make (and see point 2 for VMS, HP-UX etc. goodness) Can anyone who's been writing in C for the past eleven years let me know what (if anything ;-) ) has changed over the years? (In other news, holy crap, I've been doing this for more than a decade).

  I am not sure what setting to change for this but I open games like Dungeon Crawl or a Steam game and the game wants to take up both screens. Is there a way to have the game open just on one screen xrandr shows this. So they are both on Screen 0: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2966 x 900, maximum 8192 x 8192 LVDS1 connected 1366x768+1600+75 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm VGA1 connected 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 443mm x 249mm If you need any more info or can point me to a place you may have already found an answer please let me know.

• Are there serious companies that don't use version-control and continuous integration? Why?

  A colleague of mine was under the impression that our software department was highly advanced, as we used both a build server with continuous integration, and version control software. This did not match my point of view, as I only know of one company I which made serious software and didn't have either. However, my experience is limited to only a handful of companies. Does anyone know of any real company (larger than 3 programmers), which is in the software business and doesn't use these tools? If such a company exists, are there any good reason for them not doing so?

  What is a good architecture for storing game statistics, so that I can retrieve snapshots of it at various moments? Say I have a game, and the user's statistics initially are: { hours_played = 0, games_played = 0, no_of_times_killed = 0, } When the user purchases something for the first time from within the game, the stats are { hours_played = 10, games_played = 2, no_of_times_killed = 5, } And when he purchases something for the second time, the stats are { hours_played = 20, games_played = 4, no_of_times_killed = 10, } Let me name the events as "purchase1" and "purchase2" How do I model my statistics, so that at any point in the future, I will be able to retrieve the snapshot of the statistics at the time when "purchase1" was fired. • Is it safe to convert Windows file paths to Unix file paths with a simple replace?

  So for example say I had it so that all of my files will be transferred from a windows machine to a unix machine as such: C:\test\myFile.txt to {somewhere}/test/myFile.txt (drive letter is irrelevant at this point). Currently, our utility library that we wrote ourselves provides a method that does a simple replace of all back slashes with forward slashes: public String normalizePath(String path) { return path.replaceAll("\\", "/"); } Slashes are reserved and cannot be part of a file name, so the directory structure should be preserved. However, I'm not sure if there are other complications between windows and unix paths that I may need to worry about (eg: non-ascii names, etc)

  This is what it says on the help.ubuntu.com website, but when i go to system settings, it does not have a Launcher & Menus option. I wish I could revert back to the old Ubuntu, I hate this launcher. Does any know a fix plz?
