• Why do I have to set the max length of every damn text column in the database?

  Why is it that every RDBMS insists that you tell it what the max length of a text field is going to be... why can't it just infer this information form the data that's put into the database? I've mostly worked with MS SQL Server, but every other database I know also demands that you set these arbitrary limits on your data schema. The reality is that this is not particulay helpful or friendly to work with becuase the business requirements change all the time and almost every day some end-user is trying to put a lot of text into that column. Does any one with some inner working knowledge of a RDBMS know why we just don't infer the limits from the data that's put into the storage? I'm not talking about guessing the type information, but guessing the limits of a particular text column. I mean, there's a reason why I don't use nvarchar(max) on every text column in the database.

  Hi there, I am implementing a CMS, the case is that the "Web-Editable" is in a different domain thus, I would be able just get the page using HttpRequest in order to copy and show it in the CMS server to make it able to change it (DOM just visual purpose) and save the changes to the CSS and JavaScript folder on the "Web-Editable" using FTP. I am not allow to download all the information included on the "Web-Editable" trough the FTP, and there are other dinamic images as well comming from a private database. The question is, anyone knows how to make a httprequest "cascade" to get all the 1st level information you see when you visit a Web? Thank you in advance, Efrain

• Eclipse and SVN: Missing .project file.

  Hi, I'm working on a uni project with a few other people using SVN. Much to my annoyance the .project file was removed from the repository since "it contains platform specific information". However, this has obviously broken my setup in Eclipse, giving me the error: Problems occurred opening the selected resources. The project description file (.project) for '___' is missing. This file contains important information about the project. The project will not function properly until this file is restored. Any suggestions? Thank you.

• Best way of obfuscating / encrypting form data on the iPhone

  I want to create an app which holds sensitive information (imagine it's bank account details, thought it's not). The user enters this information on a form the first time the app starts up. I want this info to be saved, and available, any time the user uses the app (without having to enter a password). However, if the iPhone has a password lock on it, and is stolen, I don't want the data to be easily accessible from the file system. What is the best way of encrypting or obfuscating the data? There is not a lot of data, just a dozen NSStrings from the UITextFields on the form. I'm aware there are encryption export restrictions on the iPhone for non-US developers (I am in UK), so I would prefer to avoid going jumping through any of Apple's app submission hoops to get it on the store.

  How should I handle multiple user-connection defined datasource connection in my .NET application? To illustrate this better; the user provides three (3) pieces of information, username, password and data source name. This data source name is then looked-up in a central database telling that application which main database this user should connect to. My question is, in the DataAccess layer, should we only pass down enough information to uniquely identify that user, and query the central database each time in the DAL; or, should we provide another way to pass the datasource connection down to the DAL?

  Hi, We have a web application that creates a dynamic PHP page with all the MySQL stored details a user has entered via a number a forms. So far so good, but we want this information stored some how to be refereed to at a later date, as an administrator can make changes to the data, which reflects on calculations that are worked out from this saved data. When going back over this saved data we need to be able to see all the information submitted for that particular calculation, so if that data has changed we will see what is was relating to that calculation. Now we have thought about maybe a snapshot when the calculation is done, pdf of the webpage or something similar would do, but is this simple to do? I hope this makes sense...

  In general, should one design in order to place processing load on client-side? More specifically, a search engine to locate subscriber information requires a fair amount of parsing (multiple phone numbers to sort and format, hour of day, timezone, comparisons for possible substitutions of user information, etc.). Again, in general, is it preferred that one have client-side do the work? It seems to me 'yes' in a situation in which one will have many thousands of hits per minute. Use php for quick database queries ... process retrieved data client-side. yes ... no?

• Trying to send XML via EMail and the XML includes a byte[]

  Hello All, I want to send an email that has a machine readable part you cut and paste into an asp.net page and you get the information. I have stored all the information in an object and then used an XMLSerizer to create some xml. It all worked fine until I added some Images as byte[] to the object. If I dump the resulting string to disk then I can recreate the object fine but after it appears in the email client and I try to cut and paste it it never works. Clearly there are non standard characters coming out that email clients don't like. Is there some encoding I could apply to my XML that would make it display correctly in an email client? Then I could cut, paste, decode and deserilize to get my object back. Please an example of how to encode the string in c# would be great.

The information should have EXACTLY five tables, it's a hint we were given. The tables listed are the definite table names. We were told to make assumptions based on this information: Customer Invoice is generated from customer orders (Order & Order/Product entities) Supplier Order is generated for products that are low in stock (Product entity) Assumptions A customer can place many orders but an order is placed by only one customer An order can be for many products and a product can be ordered many times A product is supplied by only one supplier, a supplier may supply many products This is one of my modules in university and my lecturer is all but useful, I'm really struggling so any help is really appreciated.

• Changing a Widget's name based on a string read in from an XML form in Qt.

  I'm writing a code for a voting machine that will allow user to read in custom XML ballots and then vote on them, however in the current build I have in QtCreator, I don't see an easy way to edit buttons in my GUI directly. In the code snippet below, I assign an element to pull out the names and type of ballot being read in, but I need to append a label on the GUI as well as change buttons to the names of candidates read in.   Hi Guys What application should I use that is able to automatically access a website to gather information? Basically I have a database that completes calculations for me; however I have to manually gather the parameters from a website and input these into my database. What I would like is have an application that will take my input say the name of a product, access the website, add this name into a search box on a website, complete the search and then extract the desired information from the web page returning the results to my application to complete the calculation thus presenting me with the result. This is a little out of my depth but I’m willing to learn no matter how complicated the software. Cheers for your help.

Or is is possible to turn off instrumenting macros at all? PS Same problems occur with sizeof()

  Hi, I just started using GIT for my versioning and I want to program some tools that work on top of it. Here is my question: Which information in the .git/config is shared to a remote repo? Is any? Is there a special way to push information to that repo? The reason I am asking is that I would like to add a "unique stamp" to the config of a repo. Also the remote repo and everybody pulling that project should have the stamp. Is that possible? If not, is there any other way to identify a repository? Having a .git folder, I want to decide whether this git repo is the same as a previously specified remote repo (the same means created by pulling the remote repo, changes are okay, of course).

  I am venturing on making a website with a database for baseball games for an intramural league. I have made databases before, but this project seems to have many fields that will require at least 3 tables. I want to make the tables correct, so that I can sort and gather information from multiple fields properly ( such as the team table querying total goals scored ). Is there a website where there is a MySQL tutorial on do's and don'ts for making somewhat complex databases? Not intro tutorials, but more around where you get into combining multiple pieces of information correctly. Any source would be helpful, thanks!

• Should my DAOs (Database Entities) Directly match my UI Objects?

  I am trying to figure out best practice for N-Tier application design. When designing the objects my UI needs and those that will be persisted in the DB some of my colleagues are suggesting that the objects be one in the same. This doesn't not feel right to me and I am ultimately looking for some best practice documentation to help me in this decision. I honestly do not understand why I would want to design this way given that other applications may want to interact with my Data Access Layer....or it is just ignorance or lack of understanding on my part. Any documentation, information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Just want to better understand these concepts and I am having a hard time finding some good information on the best practice for implementing these patterns (Or it is right in front of me on what I found and I didn't understand what was being outlined).   I have three master tables for location information Country {ID, Name} State {ID, Name, CountryID} City {ID, Name, StateID} Now I have one transcation table called Person which hold the person name and his location information. My Question is shall I have only CityID in the Person table like this: Person {ID, Name, CityID}' And have view of join query which give me detail like "Person{ID,Name,City,State,Country}" or Shall I replicate the mapping Person {ID, Name, CityID, StateID, CountryID} Please suggest which do you feel is to be selected and why? if there is any other option available, please suggest.   What is the idea behind Grasp's Controller pattern? My current interpretation is that sometimes you want to achieve something that needs to use a couple of classes but none of those classes could or has access to the information needed to do it, so you create a new class that does the job, having references to all the needed classes(this is, could be the information expert). Is this a correct view of what Grasp's Controller is about? Generally when googling or SO'ing controller, I just get results about MVC's (and whatnot) which are topics that I don't understand about, so I'd like answers that don't assume I know ASP.NET's MVC or something :( Thanks

  I have a set of tables to show the relationship between organziations and supporters below. Although I have done some basic mySQL querries, I know very little about database 'design'. I plan to querry the database for: -a list of contributors to a specific organization... or, -a list of organizations that a specific suporter supports. The database tables for organiations and contributors may have other columns in the future and recieve a lesser amount of querries based on that information.   Hey guys, I've been working with J2ME for a short while, however I've been unable to find anything regarding my query. I'm wanting to link interfaces, I.E A to B to C. Similar to a card layout. Information on each interface changes based on the choices the user made previously. For example City - Cinema - Cinema Listings. The eventual target is to create a MIDlet that displays information from a database (I understand a midlet needs to connect to a servlet which connects to the DB). Thanks in advance for you're time.
