  What is the best file system to use for a second hard drive when dual booting between WinXP and Win7? I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

• I set a frequency too high for my monitor. How can I get it back to normal?

  I have a Geforce 8500GT on my PC, and I made the stupid mistake of setting it to a higher frequency than my monitor can manage. It boots up and it shows me this… and that's all. I can't do anything. The thing is that I think this video board is a little broken anyway, because when it boots up i can't see anything until Windows starts loading. But it worked fine after, no problems. I'm on my on-board video board now, and I don't know how to set the frequency back, because when I boot up with the on-board one, it says something like "changing freq" and it goes ok. How can I get the frequency back for the 8500Gt?

  I've created a simple web application, a self-contained tool with a user system. I host it publicly for everyone to use, but I've gotten some requests to allow companies to host the entire application privately on their internal systems. I have no idea what I'm doing - I have no experience with deployment or server stuff. I'm just some person who learned enough JS and PHP to make a tool for my own needs. The application runs with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. What's the best way to package my application to let others run it privately? I'm assuming there's better options than just sending them all the source code. I'd like to find a solution that is: Does not require support to set up (I'm just a single developer without much free time) Easy to configure Easy to update Does there exist some one-size-fits all thing that I can give to someone, they can install it, and bam, now when they go to http://myapplication/ on their intranet, it works? • Install XP over Ubuntu. (Flash Drive)

  My girlfriend needs to install Windows XP over Ubuntu on her PC, because she need to run some software that Wine and a visual machine can't handle as well as the 'real' thing. Problem is, it seems very difficult to make a bootable flash drive with the files from a XP .iso from Ubuntu. All the guides I could find was about Windows 7, formatting the USB as NTFS, then use UNetbootin to extract the files to the USB. Problem is, that only works with 7, not XP. Does anyone know how I can make a bootable XP flash drive? Thanks! It's really important.

• Lots of Internet browsing issues, all browsers

  Before the upgrade, everything was working fine. Now, however, I can connect to the Internet but a lot of stuff fails, and the weirdest thing is that it happens with Firefox, Chromium and Opera. Some of the things that fail: I can't log in to Stack Overflow, after entering user/pass it loads for a long time on Firefox and throws Error 408 (browser request timed out) on Chromium and Opera I can't log in to Hotmail, similar symptoms I can login to Facebook, but when I try to write a comment, or just post something in my wall, it stays loading for a long time, and then fails The first two issues seem to be related to secure pages, and the second one is another issue altogether, I believe. However, they all happen with all browsers, which is really weird. Talking about weird: I connect using a Huawei SmartAX MT 810 USB modem, which cost me blood and tears to get it working under Ubuntu. I ordered an ethernet modem/router with my ISP, and I'm still waiting, but this issue intrigues me anyway. Has anyone experienced this kind of problems? I Googled around, but couldn't find a similar case.

• Windows screen resolution change: lengthen timeout

  Occasionally I need to change the screen resolution of the console of a Windows virtual machine using XenCenter. When you attempt this change, Windows will revert if you don't accept the changed resolution within 15 seconds of clicking 'apply.' (Normally, this is a good thing.) The problem is that if I have a slow connection between XenCenter and the Xen hypervisor, the virtual console display may not refresh quickly enough to allow me to respond within 15 seconds. As a result, I can't change the resolution, even though the new resolution is valid. Is there a way to increase the timeout before reverting to the original display resolution?

  Hey, In the spirit of building community, and because it's always cool to see great work being pushed out and created by people, anyone up for a little show and tell? The rules are really simple, and this is supposed to be a bit of fun, so; post a link to a single piece of work (anything you've produced, designed or developed (or helped developed)) and write a little paragraph or two on what it is, what you like about it, the technology you used and perhaps one thing that you learnt from the project. It could be a website, framework, open source project, game, mobile application... etc. So, allow me to start. I'm personally very proud of a tiny iPhone application I designed and developed. It's only available to UK AppStore users, and I only have a small userbase, but, I like it. The application is called Sushi Total: http://knowledgeisporridge.com/sushitotal.html It's written in Objective-C. It's a very simply application that allows you to total up your bill at Yo Sushi restaurants by tapping coloured plates. If I learnt anything from making this application it's this: I believe software should be simple and uncluttered, and that producing an application with one feature is absolutely fine as long as it works really well. So, who's next?

• Cannot access folder locally, but can remotely

  I'm having a peculiar problem on one of my servers at the moment, which seems to be related to authentication in some way, but I have no idea how to find the root of the problem. I have a folder on the server D:\Somefolder\Logs. If I am connected to the server via an RDP terminal, so essentially "local", I cannot access that folder - I get an access denied. If I am connecting from my machine to it using the share \server\d$\Somefolder\Logs, I can access it. I'm logging in to both machines as the same user. Permissions on the folder seem quite simple, CREATOR OWNER, SYSTEM and Administrators. I am a Domain Admin, and they are in the local "Administrators" group. It is also affecting things like access to SQL Server, so I don't think it's a simple folder-permissions thing. For example, I cannot connect SQL Management Studio to all the local SQL instances using a domain account, but I can if I connect remotely to it.

• OpenXDK Questions

  I was strolling around XBox development. Apart form buying a DevKit from Microsoft, another thing got my attention is called, OpenXDK which stands for Open XBox Development Kit. From their main site its pretty obvious that there hasn't been any update since 2005 but digging a little deeper, I found that in their project repository is was being updated. Last time stamp was 2009-02-15. Quick google search said, its not actually really on a good place to poke around. Many and MANY features are absent. Being a hobby project I perfectly understand. But, those results are quite old. The question is, is there anybody who has any experience with OpenXDK? If is, that is it possible to shade some light on this? about its limitations? Is this a mature project? How's the latest version and what's it capable of doing? Or should I just stay away from it?

• Remove DRM From a WMV file I own

  Alright, first, let me explain. I purchased some content through Microsoft's Zune/Xbox Video service, and man that was a mistake. After trying several times to get the video to play, I received an error along the lines of "out of licenses." Lucky for me, I was able to recover the file I was looking for off of a backup, but now I'm having problems playing it. It works fine in Windows Media Player, but not in Zune or Xbox Video (on Windows 8). I contacted Zune's customer support, and of course they couldn't help me. So, I legally own the content, I just want to be able to play it where I want to play it. It's ridiculous that I can't. I know there are ways to do this out there, I just can't figure it out (I keep getting directed to this piece of junk thing called Almedia, which kind of seems to work, but was only putting out audio in the demo version). • How exactly does app ranking work?

  So I've been in the app industry for around half a year and I still don't know how exactly ranking higher for your app will help increase downloads. That sounds like a question with an obvious answer but this is what's going through my mind so hear me out: Unless your app is ranked within the top 100, no one can see it in the featured categories. So even if my app jumped from 400th to 300th place, would there really even be a difference in downloads? And I'm saying 400th to 300th in ranking in my specific category. Indie developers like me don't even come close to ranking for the overall category. So far, the only usefulness of trying to get a higher rank is to get featured or something like that, but big companies have tons of money to throw on marketing...so the chances of any indie developer getting featured is rare. The only thing that I can see ranking being good for is to rank for your keywords so that when someone searches for that word, your app will hopefully appear in the top 10-25 results. Can anyone confirm my thoughts or add anything else that I might have missed out on? How exactly do users find your app if you're not in the top 100 app in your category?

• MacVim commands not working in insert mode

  The following shortcuts I have defined in my settings: "Select next/prev tabs noremap <C-Tab> :tabnext<CR> noremap <C-S-Tab> :tabprev<CR> are for going to the previous and next tabs of open files. The only annoying thing about it is anytime I want to switch tabs, I have to first get out of insert mode. How can I force MacVim to register these shortcuts even if I'm in insert mode?

  Hey folks, I'm bashing my head to configure load balancing stuff between two database servers. I have no clue whether, I can find any mechanism to implement this. I already tried to implement Heart beat clustering but it requires virtual Ip wherein I can't create virtual IP or assign my own IP address in amazon EC2. • Can a power loss break an hard disk?

  Today I was working when all of a sudden a power loss (in the entire house) occurs. I tried to reboot the machine but it states that there's an "Ebios error"; tried with an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd and while booting it states that there are various I/O errors on the first partition (the one with the boot sector). Now I managed to backup all of my data (using the live cd aforementioned) but I don't know if it'll worth the hassle of a reinstallation (and if it could do something useful) or if the only thing to do is to drop the hard disk as far as possible... • Is it viable to make a port from a C++ application to Java through LLVM

  how viable is it to port a C++ application to Java bytecode using LLVM (I guess LLJVM)? The thing is that we currently have a process written in C++ but a new client has made mandatory to been able to run the program in a multiplatform way, using the Java Virtual Machine with obviously no native code (no JNI). The idea is to be able to take the generated jar and copy then to different systems (Linux, Win, 32 bits - 64 bits) and it should just work. Looking around looks like it is possible to compile C++ to LLVM IR code and then that code to java bytecode. There is no need of the generated code to be readable. I have test a bit with similar things using emscripten, this takes C++ code and compile it to JavaScript. The result is valid JS but totally unreadable (looks like assambler). Does anybody done a port of an application from C++ to Java bytecode using this tecnique? What problems could we face? Is a valid approach for production code? Note: I am aware that currently we have some non standard C++ and close source libraries, we are looking to removing this non standard code and all close source libraries and use Free Libre Open Source Software, so lets suppose all code is standard C++ code with all code available at compile time. Note: It is not an option to write portable C++ code and then compile it to the desired target platform, the compiled program must be mltiplatform thus the use of JVM (right now we are not looking in similar solutions but Python or other language base, but i would also like to heard about it)

• How can I trace NTFS and Share Permissions to see why I can (or can't) write a file

  I'm trying to track down WHY I can write in a folder that, by my best estimation, I should not be able to write. The folder is shared with "Everyone" has "Full Control", with the files being more restrictive. My best guess is there's some sort of sub-group membership that's allowing me to write, but the nesting of groups that exists in our Active Directory is pretty extensive. Is there a tool, that will tell me which of the ACL entries allowed or disallowed my writing a file in a folder? The Effective Permissions dialog is marginally helpful, but what I need is something like a "NTFS ACL Trace Tool", if such a thing exists.

• Mounting share over VPN

  I have a CentOS 5 web server which currently mounts a NFS export on my Mac OS X 10.7 laptop. It works great, except over VPN I can't get it to mount at all. I tried SMBUp but haven't been able to get it working even locally. It doesn't look like there's an easy way to install netatalk for CentOS 5. Even still, I'm not sure if that's the best way to do it. I tried using a GUI SSH client that can "mount a FTP disk" and it would work, except the files require root access and there's no external root access and the client can't elevate permissions. The basic thing I need to do is have the server be able to read the files off of my laptop, connected via VPN. The files are frequently updated (every 5-20 seconds) so I don't want to manually do that via SSH. Which protocol can work with both platforms and easily handle the latency introduced by VPN (and potentially mobile broadband)? Thanks

• Sound leaks from speaker even when headphones are inserted

  I've a Dell Optiplex 960 (which I presume has a speaker inside the tower). This speaker is normally in use whenever I play music (lets call this "tower speaker"), and when I insert my headphones in the 3.5mm jack (of the tower), the tower speaker stops and the music is played through the headphones (an obvious thing to happen). But sometimes, the tower speaker starts playing the music even when the headphones are inserted! So, the music is played through both of them! This gets quite embarrassing. So, my question is - Is there a way to turn off this "tower speaker"? EDIT : I'm using Windows XP

• Connecting desktop computer to the internet through laptop wifi

  Due to some home network complications I have had to move my router to a seperate part of the house, therefore the wired network I had set up can no longer work. Before I find the time to go out and buy a Wifi adapter for my desktop PC, I have a laptop that uses a built in Wifi card to connect to my router and this can connect to the internet, and I was wondering if I could somehow access the internet on my desktop PC via my laptop. I'm hoping for a not-so-complex solution as this will only be set up for a few days, but it is quite vital that my desktop computer gets internet access. Does anyone have experience in this sort of thing and can help me out? Thanks.

• Why does internet explorer 8 fail to locate jpg files that other browsers can find?

  The following URL doesn't display for me in Internet Explorer 8. I even tried compatibility mode and it didn't fix the issue. http://beat.com.au/sites/default/files/images/_DSC5596.jpg It appears just fine in Chrome/Safari/Firefox. I suspect it has something to do with the filename starting with _ but that seems like a fairly big stretch to me. Is this error repeatable on other people's computers? And why on earth would such a strange thing happen anyway?

• Dns works, can ping, but cannot load web pages in browser

  Yesterday I changed routers, and my desktop computer started acting up. I could ping websites, and nslookup was able to resolve names to addresses, but neither chrome, firefox, nor ie could load any webpages. None of my other computers connected to the same wireless router have any problems. I connect my desktop to the router through a cheap wifi dongle. I am not super familiar with networking, but it seems that it is not a problem with the router, as dns works, and so does dhcp (the desktop is assigned an address correctly). I'd like to use these for navigating in playlist (using MPD, but it probably does not matter).   I'm fully aware of PSU's "Active PFC" and that they won't consume the written W all the time. (Makes sense). But now I'm before a PSU replacement (Guys: NEVER buy a Chieftec. Seriously.) The question is: If one can get a bigger one (in my case 750W and 650W) ... should that person go for the bigger one ? (The difference in price is not much). No, I don't think I'll soon use all that much. (Please help (if you want of course) to make the question more generic if the question is really not OK in this form. I've been wondering about this for a time already. In my case it would be XFX Black Edition Silver 750W and 650W) (Basically about "which one" I would go with XFX/Antec/something which comes with industry qualified parts. Like Duracell but in a PSU. :) But the performance is a different thing.)
