• Make a Linq-to-SQL Generated User Class Inherit from MembershipUser

  I am currently building a custom Membership Provider for my Asp.net MVC website. I have an existing database with a Users table and I'm using Linq-to-Sql to automatically generates this class for me. What I would like to do is have this generated User class inherit from the MembershipUser class so I can more easily use it in my custom Membership Provider in methods such as GetUser. I already have all the necessary columns in the table. Is there any way to do this? Or am I going about this the completely wrong way? Thanks!

• Copying (or recovering) a .PFX password to another machine?

  First things first, I'm aware of all of the finger-wagging potential that this question provides. However, I'm attempting to help out a friend with a project so I haven't been part of the decision making process thus far. I'm attempting to set up a new development machine, but one of the projects is signed with a .PFX key that's password protected and the original developer does not remember the password. The current development machine can open and build the project just fine, so I'm wondering if there is any way either to copy or to recover the saved password that Visual Studio is using on the original box so that the file can be used on the new box. Signing with a new file is obviously an option, but one that we'd prefer to avoid. Does anyone know of a way either to recover or copy the credentials for this file to a new machine?

• How can I work around the fact that in C++, sin(3.14159265) is not 0?

  In C++, const double Pi = 3.14159265; cout << sin(Pi); // displays: 3.58979e-009 it SHOULD display the number zero I understand this is because Pi is being approximated, but is there any way I can have a value of Pi hardcoded into my program that will return 0 for sin(Pi)? (a different constant maybe?) In case you're wondering what I'm trying to do: I'm converting polar to rectangular, and while there are some printf() tricks I can do to print it as "0.00", it still doesn't consistently return decent values (in some cases I get "-0.00") The lines that require sin and cosine are: x = r*sin(theta); y = r*cos(theta); BTW: My Rectangular - Polar is working fine... it's just the Polar - Rectangular Thanks! edit: I'm looking for a workaround so that I can print sin(some multiple of Pi) as a nice round number to the console (ideally without a thousand if-statements)

• SSIS - Bulk Update at Database Field Level

  Hello, Here's our mission: Receive files from clients. Each file contains anywhere from 1 to 1,000,000 records. Records are loaded to a staging area and business-rule validation is applied. Valid records are then pumped into an OLTP database in a batch fashion, with the following rules: If record does not exist (we have a key, so this isn't an issue), create it. If record exists, optionally update each database field. The decision is made based on one of 3 factors...I don't believe it's important what those factors are. Our main problem is finding an efficient method of optionally updating the data at a field level. This is applicable across ~12 different database tables, with anywhere from 10 to 150 fields in each table (original DB design leaves much to be desired, but it is what it is). Our first attempt has been to introduce a table that mirrors the staging environment (1 field in staging for each system field) and contains a masking flag. The value of the masking flag represents the 3 factors. We've then put an UPDATE similar to... UPDATE OLTPTable1 SET Field1 = CASE WHEN Mask.Field1 = 0 THEN Staging.Field1 WHEN Mask.Field1 = 1 THEN COALESCE( Staging.Field1 , OLTPTable1.Field1 ) WHEN Mask.Field1 = 2 THEN COALESCE( OLTPTable1.Field1 , Staging.Field1 ) ... As you can imagine, the performance is rather horrendous. Has anyone tackled a similar requirement? We're a MS shop using a Windows Service to launch SSIS packages that handle the data processing. Unfortunately, we're pretty much novices at this stuff.

  Does anybody have a quickie for converting an unsafe string to an int? The string typically comes back as: '234\r\n' or something like that. In this case I want 234. If '-1\r\n', I want -1. I never want the method to fail but I don't want to go so far as try, except, pass just to hide errors either (in case something extreme happens).

• FileSystemWatcher does not fire when using C++ std::ofstream

  I'm trying to add a log monitor to an in-house test utility for a windows service I'm working on. The service is written in C++ (win32) and the utility is in .NET (C#) The log monitor works for many other C++ apps I've written, but not for my service. The only main difference I can see is that the other apps use the older ::WriteFile() to output to the log, whereas in the service I'm using std::ofstream like this: std::ofstream logFile; logFile.open("C:\\mylog.log"); logFile << "Hello World!" << std::endl; logFile.flush(); From my utility I use FileSystemWatcher like this: FileSystemWatcher fsw = new FileSystemWatcher(@"C:\", "mylog.log"); fsw.Changed += new FileSystemEventHandler(fsw_Handler); fsw.EnableRaisingEvents = true; But for the service, it never gets any change events as the log is updated. I've found that any example code using FileSystemWatcher I've come across online has the same exact issue as well... But, I know the events should be available because other log monitor apps (like BareTail) work fine with the service log file. I'd rather get the C# code for the utility to just work so it works with anything, but if I have to change the logging code for the service I will. Does anyone see what's going wrong here?

  Looking at the document, the goal is to select the second cell from the second row, in the first table. I've created the following expression: //row/td[2]/text()[td[@class="identifier"]/span[text()="identifier"]] but it does not return any rows. Unfortunately I do not see what's wrong. To me, it looks alright. The expression should: select the text in the second cell in any row where the text of a span equals to "identifier" and the span is located in cell with a "identifier" class I'd appreciate it if you could point out what I'm doing wrong. • Does mprotect flush the instruction cache on ARM Linux?

  I am writing a JIT on ARM Linux that executes an instruction set that contains self-modifying code. The instruction set does not have any cache flush instructions (similar to x86 in that respect). If I write out some code to a page and then call mprotect on that page, is that sufficient to invalidate the instruction cache? Or do I also need to use the cacheflush syscall on those pages?

• Why is Read-Modify-Write necessary for registers on embedded systems?

  I was reading http://embeddedgurus.com/embedded-bridge/2010/03/different-bit-types-in-different-registers/, which said: With read/write bits, firmware sets and clears bits when needed. It typically first reads the register, modifies the desired bit, then writes the modified value back out and I have run into that consrtuct while maintaining some production code coded by old salt embedded guys here. I don't understand why this is necessary. When I want to set/clear a bit, I always just or/nand with a bitmask. To my mind, this solves any threadsafe problems, since I assume setting (either by assignment or oring with a mask) a register only takes one cycle. On the other hand, if you first read the register, then modify, then write, an interrupt happening between the read and write may result in writing an old value to the register. So why read-modify-write? Is it still necessary?

• JavaScript Resource Management Design Pattern

  As a web developer, a common problem I find myself tackling is waiting for something to load before doing something else. In particular, I often hide (using either display: none; or visibility: hidden; depending on the situation) elements while waiting for a background image or a CSS file to load. Consider this example from Last.FM. They overlay a semi-transparant PNG over each album art image so that it looks like it's inside a jewel-case. They let it load when it loads, so depending on your internet speed, you may see the art image by itself (without the overlay) temporarily. In this case, the album art looks fine without the jewel-case effect. But in similar situations, I have found that I don't want the user to see the site's design mangled as resources incrementally load. So, in rare cases I have hidden everything from the user until the whole kit and kaboodle has loaded. But this is often a pain to write out, and may force the user to wait for a pretty long time to see anything (besides "loading..." text). I can think of (and have used on occasion) some obvious solutions/compromises: Use some inline CSS so that as certain parts of the DOM load and render, they will immediately have the correct size/position/etc. Immediately render the navigation part of the site, so that if the user wanted to use the current page purely to get somewhere else, they don't have to wait for the rest to load. Load pixelated images first as placeholders for layout while lazy-loading higher quality images as replacements. Something quirky like using a cute animated gif to distract the user during a "loading..." phase. Show useful information as a reference while loading the full UI. (Something akin to Gmail Inbox Preview, etc.) (Sorry if my question was basically just asked and answered...) Despite all of these ideas, I still find myself hoping there are better ways of doing some of these things. So I guess what I'm looking for is some inspiration and/or any creative ways of dealing with this problem that you guys may have seen out in the wild.

• String Utility Library for Code Generation

  CodeSmith has a nice StringUtils class that can be used to change database object names to singular, plural, camel case, pascal case, etc... Very useful for creating data access layers in their code generation tool. I'm trying to port some CodeSmith templates to the T4 template files used by Visual Studio, and I'm trying to find a similar library to do these things. There must be one somewhere in T4, since that's what is used to produce the LINQ to SQL classes, and it does a nice job of pluralization / singularization. Does anyone know where this library exists, or if a free library with similar functionality exists somewhere? Thanks!

• Slider Not Behaving As I Would Expect

  I have a slider that changes a float from 1 to 10 but I want to save this value and use it across all view controllers so I have saved that float as an NSNumber in a model class (settingsData.sensitivitySliderSettingValue). I am trying to output the updated slider value to the console every time that it is changed however it just gets set to 0 rather than 0 to 10. I don't understand why this is... It seems to pass the variable, but nothing after the . works.

  Without using jQuery, what is the best way to limit text entry of a textbox to numbers, lowercase letters and a given set of symbols (for example - and _)? If the user enters an uppercase letter, I would like it to be automatically converted to a lowercase letter, and if the user enters a symbol not within the given set, I would like to be able to instantly show a validation error (show some element adjacent to or below the text box). • NHibernate Lazy="Extra"

  Is there a good explanation out there on what exactly lazy="extra" is capable of? All the posts I've seen all just repeat the fact that it turns references to MyObject.ItsCollection.Count into select count(*) queries (assuming they're not loaded already). I'd like to know if it's capable of more robust things, like turning MyObject.ItsCollection.Any(o => o.Whatever == 5) into a SELECT ...EXISTS query. Section 18.1 of the docs only touches on it. I'm not an NH developer, so I can't really experiment with it and watch SQL Profiler without doing a bit of work getting everything set up; I'm just looking for some sort of reference describing what this feature is capable of. • Simplifying Testing through design considerations while utilizing dependency injection

  We are a few months into a green-field project to rework the Logic and Business layers of our product. By utilizing MEF (dependency injection) we have achieved high levels of code coverage and I believe that we have a pretty solid product. As we have been working through some of the more complex logic I have found it increasingly difficult to unit test. We are utilizing the CompositionContainer to query for types required by these complex algorithms. My unit tests are sometimes difficult to follow due to the lengthy mock object setup process that must take place, just right, to allow for certain circumstances to be verified. My unit tests often take me longer to write than the code that I'm trying to test. I realize this is not only an issue with dependency injection but with design as a whole. Is poor method design or lack of composition to blame for my overly complex tests? I've tried base classing tests, creating commonly used mock objects and ensuring that I utilize the container as much as possible to ease this issue but my tests always end up quite complex and hard to debug. What are some tips that you've seen to keep such tests concise, readable, and effective?

  Put shortly: For those familiar with language bindings in Qt and Gtk+. E.g. python and ruby. Are there any quality or capability difference? More background: I know C++ and Qt very well. Minimal experience with Gtk+. I know C++ is not ideal for language bindings due to the lack of a well defined ABI (application binary interface). I also read that Gtk+ was designed to be bound to other languages. So I wonder how this manifets itself in practice. Are the Gtk+ bindings better maintained or work better in some way than their Qt counterparts? I am presently quite interested in the Go language, and they have started developing Gtk+ bindings. However C++ bindings is far away. It makes me wonder whether learning Gtk+ is worth it.

If you observe this array using: [myObj addObserver:self forKeyPath:@"theArray" options:0 context:NULL]; And then insert an object in the array like this: [[myObj theArray] addObject:[NSString string]]; An observeValueForKeyPath... notification is not sent. However, the following does send the proper notification: [[myObj mutableArrayValueForKey:@"theArray"] addObject:[NSString string]]; This is because mutableArrayValueForKey returns a proxy object that takes care of notifying observers. But shouldn't the synthesized accessors automatically return such a proxy object? What's the proper way to work around this--should I write a custom accessor that just invokes [super mutableArrayValueForKey...]?
