The user is: Downloading pornography Attempting unauthorized access Running hacking software Sending unsolicited email Installing software / tampering with the system etc This is intended as a generic answer for employee behavioral problems, a la Can you help me with my software licensing question? I could see where acceptable use issues are a touch out of scope for SF, however it is one of those things most sysadmins will run into. I don't want to keep rewriting similar answers.

    In 10.10 upstart is being used instead of sysvinit. It's possible to remove annoying upstart services which you do not want by removing the appropriate file in /etc/init/blah.conf However, this seems a heavy handed approach. How do you correctly configure upstart to be able to selectively turn these services on and off via the command line? As a practical example, the answers listed here to turn gdm off using rcconf no longer work: How do I prevent GDM from running at boot on Ubuntu?

  • Access Derby for CDP Server

    I am working on a project that requires accessing the Derby database behind a CDP Backup Server. From what limited research I've been able to complete, I have found that it is possible to access Derby databases over TCP, but I'm at a complete loss for this.     How do you decrease or shrink the size of a KVM virtual machine disk? I allocated a virtual disk of 500GB (stored at /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm1.img), and I'm finding that overkill, so now I'd like to free up some of that space for use with other virtual machines. There seems to be a lot answers on how to increase image storage, but not decrease it. I found the virt-resize tool, but it only seems to work with raw disk partitions, not disk images.

  • Why is the disk making my motherboard beep?

    Whenever I let my PC do heavy disk accesses for a long time, the speaker on the motherboard starts making a continuous chirping sound. Thankfully it doesn't happen often, but it drives me nuts when it does. Anybody know where this sound might be coming from, or have any hints as to how to track it down? Edit: The problem appears to be with the processor, the correlation with disk access was coincidental. Thanks for all the answers.

  • View numeric columns in hex - SQL Server Management Studio

    In SQL Server Management Studio, when I run a query which outputs a numeric column (int or similar types), they are displayed in decimal (example: 193). I want them to display in hex (example: 0xC1). How do I do that? I found many answers on how to write converter functions, but I don't want that - only change the display in SSMS. I only found this unanswered question. I use SQL2010, though may move to SQL2012 soon.

I'm running on a small system (256M RAM), and would like to experiment with keeping the disk cache size smaller so that there's more memory available for applications. What does this mean, can i revert it to normal, has anything been modified and is there a list somewhere of color codes for windows file names.. ? (I can recall seeing blue somewhere before).

    This question already has an answer here: Grepping through .gz log files 5 answers I have a set of 100 log files, compressed using gzip. I need to find all lines matching a given expression. I'd use grep, but of course, that's a bit of a nightmare because I'll have to unzip all files, one by one, grep them and delete the unzipped version, because they wouldn't all fit on my sevrer if they were all unzipped. Anyone has a little trick on how to get that done quickly?

    I can't find clear answers / methods on this. As seen elsewhere, passenger and RoR under apache gobble up ram on my VPS. I've tried a multitude of stacks and implementations, currently resting on a sub optimal apache/cgi/rails configuration, which has swapped my ram usage for CPU time and slow response to requests. Can anyone recommend an efficient and preferably simple to administer method of setting up rails apps in ubuntu 10.04 server?

After setting up a few <VirtualHost>s in apache, I'd like to configure the _defualt_ ServerName so that it returns the 404 message. I.e., unless some explicitly available domain is specified in the Host http header, return 404. (Ideally something more direct than pointing to a now-nonexistent directory.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
