• Using nginx and/or varnish to cache server-generated 301 redirects

  I'm implementing a sort of url-shortener service. What happens is that I have some backend app server that takes in a request, does some computation and returns a 301 redirected url back upstream to an nginx frontend: request ---> nginx ----> app_server What I want to be able to do is cache this returned 301 url for the same request (a specific url with a "short code"). Does nginx do this caching automatically? Or should I drop in something like varnish in between nginx and the app_server? I can easily cache this in memcache, but that would require hitting the app_server, which I'm sure can be dispensed with after the first request. Thanks.

• Tiled perlin/value noise texture with (2^n)+1 size

  Actually what I have in mind is value noise I think, but what I am going to ask applies to both of them. It is known that if you want to produce tiled texture by using the perlin/value noise, the size of the texture should be specified as the power of 2 (2^n). Without any modifications to the algorithm when you use the size of (2^n)+1 the texture cannot be tiled anymore, so I am wondering whether it is possible (by modifying the algorithm somehow) to generate such tiling texture with the size of (2^n)+1. • spurious hardware memory 'errors' on hp dl380 g5's being generated

  Hi All, i've got 2 new HP dl380g5 servers running HP's esxi4 patched to 219382. they have both been patched up to the latest hp firmware levels (firmware cd 8.7) both are running 32gb (4 x 8gb sticks) both servers are showing the same symptoms - the memory lights come on for two (random) dimms on the front of the server and the health led turns red. sometimes the server stays up and running with no problems. othertimes the server locks dead and only a power reset can bring it back. there is nothing showing in the ilo logs and nothing within the vmware hardware monitoring. the memory has been replaced i've got other customers that have been running dl380g5's with out any issues on esx3.5 - this is our first vsphere deployment with them. these are meant to go live soon so any advice would be great. thanks in advance.

• Mailing list with dynamically generated addresses

  I am trying to implement a dynamic mailing list from a database that changes quite often. Conditions: Postfix is the MTA Email addresses are in a MySql Database Postfix only allows senders whose emails are in that database (via smtpd_sender_restrictions) Cron job extracts the current emails from the database nightly and puts them into an alias file, then runs postalias on it. This works well, but since the sender remains the same, many domains are rejecting the email since my server is not a DNS listed mail server for the sender's domain. So, I either have to find a way to re-write the outgoing address as "listserv@mydomain" or find some mailing list package that will use database-retrieved emails (either queried directly or in a flat file) as the subscriber list, with that list replaced daily. I've tried Sympa and am pretty much ready to give up on it - it's a nightmare to get working right - but that's the only open source listserver that I have seen that works with dynamic mail lists. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Joe

• SQL binary value to PHP variable leading zeros

  Using sql query to pull data from a mssql database results in a value that still has leading zeros. The data in database is stored as binary(13) - so it will pull all 13 digits. However the value is a text, so any leading zeros will generally show up as '?' in a form on the site - and in return will update wrong data to the database later. So what i need is to only select/display the text itself, not all 13 bytes. using: SELECT CONVERT(char,uilock_pw) AS uipwd FROM tbl_UserAccount or SELECT uilock_pw FROM tbl_UserAccount still adds the leading zeros to the char array. Example in database: 0x71776531323300000000000000 Would show up as: qwe123??????? But should be: qwe123 Im not even sure what character those ? represent. Using Echo results in a normal qwe123 - but not in a form.

• Does Windows 7 deleted files generated during hibernation?

  Somebody was using my Windows 7 and she hibernated it instead of shutting down. Later, I booted up Ubuntu and moved about 2GB worth of files from the Ubuntu partition to the Windows partition. After booting up Windows (from hibernation), I couldn't find any of the files. Then I restarted the PC, and the files showed for a second or two and then disappeared. Did Windows delete all the files I put on it while it was hibernating?

• Wireshark TCP Window Size Value

  I am debugging an application with Wireshark and watching the TCP Window Size value shrink on one side of the communication. If the packet's TCP section shows a "Window size value: 1", does that mean the source's window size is 1 or the destination's window size is 1? I know one side is communicating faster than the other can handle, I just want be sure I know which one it is. 1 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.100, Modbus/TCP, Length: 66, Window Size Value: 1 2 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.1, TCP, Length: 60, Window Size Value: 92 3 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.1 TCP, Length: 310, Window Size Value: 92 4 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.100 TCP, Length: 54, Window Size Value: 0 So is 192.168.0.1's window size 0 or is it reporting that 192.168.0.100's window is 0?   I'm using a discrete event simulator called ns-2 that was built using Tcl and C++. I was trying to write some code in TCL: set ns [new Simulator] set state 0 $ns at 0.0 "puts \"At 0.0 value of state is: $state\"" $ns at 1.0 "changeVal" $ns at 2.0 "puts \"At 2.0 values of state is: $state\"" proc changeVal {} { global state global ns $ns at-now "set state [expr $state+1]" puts "Changed value of state to $state" } $ns run Here's the output: At 0.0 value of state is: 0 Changed value of state to 0 At 2.0 values of state is: 0 The value of state does not seem to change. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong in using TCL. Anyone has an idea as to what might be going wrong here? EDIT: Thanks for the help. Actually, ns-2 is something over which I do not have much control (unless I recompile the simulator itself).   I'm trying to create an editable textbox via a drop down of selected values. Basically in Red Only mode I want the drop down to be a disabled textbox. It works fine when I do this with SelectedValue but when I need it to display the dropdown text and not the value. If I define the style #obj { margin: 0 auto; } and then do $('#obj').css('marginLeft'); the result is the computed value in pixels. Is there any way to tell whether those pixels come from the auto calculation or not, without parsing document.styleSheets?
