• Open Source alternative to lablife

  I am looking for an Open Source alternative to SAAS provided by lablife.org website. Main purpose of the service is to automate daily tasks for life science laboratory. This service was free and nice to use, but when the original company developing this service was bought by BioData they kind of decided to kill and replace it with a new service called labguru. Apparently, a new service has a lot of functionality missing or just bad. That's why I am on a search for an alternative solution. So if you are familiar with what this software does - and if there are any known alternatives, I would be very grateful for any of your tips.

• How can I Export a Table in Access using VBA into a specific sheet in an Excel spreadsheet?

  I have a some tables, we will call them Table1,Table2.... and I need them to be Exported into specific spreadsheets in a macro enabled Excel File (.xlsm) that already exists. So I would need to put Table1 into Sheet2, Table2 into Sheet3... and so on. I had been doing this manually by going to the export menu in Access but it is getting monotonous so I would like to automate the process. The Excel file will already have code in each spreadsheet which would need to still be intact.

• I want to query whitepages.com 4,000 times, how to save the results?

  I have an old customer list of 4,000 businesses. I want to determine if the phone numbers associated with each listing are still working (and therefore the business is probably still open). I can put each number in whitepages.com and check them one by one... but want to automate the results. I have looked at their API and can't digest it. I can form the correct query URL, but trying things like cURL -O doesn't work. I have access to Mac tools, Unix tools, and could try various javascript stuff if anyone could point me in the right direction... would even pay. Help? Thx

  Hi, I am using Watin mostly to automate thing I do by hand. Sometimes, I need to change proxy. To do this, I have to set up IE to use a local proxy all the time (listens locally and forwards to a remote porxy), and then by hand change the settings of that program each time I need to use another proxy. This is not an elegant solution! It may work, but it is not nice. So, my question is, how do I change programmatically IE settings while using Watin? I code in VB.NET. Thank you

• Adding an host programmatically (name resolution under Windows)

  I would like to programmatically add to Windows a name / IP association so that this name can be resolved locally. This does not have to be persisted between reboots. The only way I now is to add an entry to the "hosts" file, but this feels hacky especially since I would like to automate this. Is there any way to do this using a command-line tool or a Win32 API? Perhaps by addind an entry to Windows DNS cache or something similar? Oh, and please state if this solution is Vista-compatible. Regards. Edit : Thanks, guy. Sadly, all of your answers indeed involve DNS or other servers. I was looking for a purely local solution which would work on a "standard" Windows installation. Such a thing does not seem to exist, though.

• Strange/simple batch question regarding Java/Ant

  For my company, I'm making a batch script to go through and compile the latest revisions of code for our current project. I'm using Ant to build the class files, but encountered a strange error. One of the source files imports .* from a directory, where there are no files (only folders), and in fact, the folders needed are imported right after. It compiles perfectly fine in Eclipse, but I'm using an Ant script to automate it outside of the IDE, and Javac throws an error when it encounters this line. Is there any automated procedure I can use to ignore/suppress this error with javac in Ant? I'd even go so far as to create a dummy file in the importing directory, but all of that in contained in a Jar file I don't wish to have to decompress and then recompress with the dummy file. • Where is the default language data stored in OS 10.6

  From a shell in 10.4 or 10.5, I was able to do this: /usr/bin/defaults read NSGlobalDomain AppleLanguages To get the list of the language preference for that particular machine. This was done so that I could restore it back to that list after changing it with the 'defaults write' command to something else (in order to help automate l10n testing). Now, along comes OS 10.6, and AppleLanguages is nowhere in any of our defaults domains. I know that I can alter it for each running application by altering their specific property lists...but at the cost of more complexity. Also, some of the apps I have under test here are installer packages...and It's a real pain to change stuff (like the .plist I'd have to change here) in those without being somewhat destructive; that's why I chose to do it globally in the first place. Anyways, it'd be great if I could find where they stashed it now...or if they deprecated it (like a zillion other things in OS 10.6) completely.

  SQL Server 2008 provides the ability to script data as Insert statements using the Generate Scripts option in Management Studio. Is it possible to access the same functionality from within a SSIS package? Here's what I'm trying to accomplish... I have a scheduled job that nightly scripts out all the schema and data for a SQL Server 2008 database and then uses the script to create a "mirror copy" SQLCE 3.5 database. I've been using Narayana Vyas Kondreddi's sp_generate_inserts stored procedure to accomplish this, but it has problems with some datatypes and greater-than-4K columns (holdovers from SQL Server 2000 days). The Script Data function looks like it could solve my problems, if only I could automate it. Any suggestions?

• Synchronising scripts / db / files from dev system to web server

  I work as a freelance web dev, and up until now have been ftping my scripts / databases / static files to my web server manually, but I'm finding that is too error prone. So I'm looking for an app to automate uploading new and updated scripts / files / databases / etc. I know a lot of independent devs use WinSCP or Unison, but I don't think those apps can synch databases. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It doesn't need to be anything overly feature rich as I'm not working within a team or across multiple operating systems or anything like that. I can purchase any reasonably priced license if necesary. My work is primarily for PHP / MySQL / Apache on a Windows system, and then uploaded to a Linux / Apache server. thanks for your time!

  Using osql command, SSQL backup of a database is created. It is saved to Disk. Then renamed to match the date of the day backup was taken. All these files are saved in a single folder all the time. for example: Batch1.bat does the following 1) Created backup.bak 2) renamed to backup 12-13-2009.bak (this is done by the combination of % ~ - etc to get the date parameter) This is now automated to take backup everyday by Task scheduler in Windows. Can the batch file also be modified to delete backup files older than 7 days? if so, how ?   It has been suggested on Amazon docs http://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ among other places, that you can backup your dynamodb tables using Elastic Map Reduce, I have a general understanding of how this could work but I couldn't find any guides or tutorials on this, So my question is how can I automate dynamodb backups (using EMR)? So far, I think I need to create a "streaming" job with a map function that reads the data from dynamodb and a reduce that writes it to S3 and I believe these could be written in Python (or java or a few other languages). Any comments, clarifications, code samples, corrections are appreciated.

• Faking user interaction on CMS

  I'm working with a CMS and need to import data to it using typical html forms. The data itself is in csv files with one page per row. Such is the CMS that importing directly to db isn't possible due to the complexity of the design. It's pretty important that i "fake" usual user interaction because the CMS does a lot of background work that's crucial for the import. Basically, for each row in the csv file, I need to copy a csv column to a html textfield, or select a checkbox, or click a certain button. One major issue is mapping the data in the csv to actions in the CMS. So if one column contains the string 'foobar' is really means "set the firstName dropdown widget to 'foobar'". Is there a tool to automate this? I´ve been looking at AutoHotKey, Selendium, Web-Harvester and many other tools but I'm not convinced they are the correct tools. The main problem is being able to interact with the html pages in a easy way.

If the html page defines "onclick=xxx", element.onclick returns the click handler. However, if an event handler is defined in javascript, element.onclick simply returns NULL. What's the right way to get the event handler then?   I am sure this question has been asked hundreds of time and been responded equally. I am trying to get a clear picture of my effort before I embark on this. I want to know if SVNImporter or any other tool out there helps me migrate my UCM VOBs to Subversion repos. I dont mind losing some history. Also please share your strategies if there are no tools out there. I was told by someone that I would have to rebase my view with each baseline from oldest to the newest and incrementally commit that code into Subversion. While this seems to be plain and simple but considering the number of VOBs we have here, this would be a gigantic task for us to do manually. • How do you write a consistent UI Automation for MS? MSAA & UI Automation don't seem to overlap.

  Working on a general Automation tool, considering moving from Win32 Message hooks to .net UI Automation, however the feature set of UI Automation doesn't cover all we have in Win32 and still doesn't seem to support all the GUI on Windows. One such example is Windows Live Messenger. Windows Live messenger 2009 is still using the older DirectUIHwnd to draw the gui. This means that you can't use windows messages to send to the controls, because the controls don't have their own HWND. It also seems to defeat the new .net UI Automation framework though the documentation seems to make out as if it can be joined in the UI Automation and Microsoft Active Accessibility document. Looking at MS Accessibility pointed to Active Accessibility 2.0 SDK Tools which showed that MSAA can interact with the contents. Is there some trick to getting the older MSAA technology that UI Automation seems to be trying to replace to actually work with UI Automation? I'd rather not have multiple solutions trying to automate the same windows for windows unlike Windows Live Messenger where each of these techniques is valid and will work.

• Replacement for Azure SDK Powershell commandlets for deployments

  Hi, We've run into an issue with the New-Deployment Azure Powershell commandlet timing out; we've put in a bug report with MS. While they gave us an explanation for it (the path and timeout threshold used to upload through commandlets is different then what's used by the web portal); they don't have a fix for us. We need to get this running so we can automate our build deployments, so we're looking into developing a custom commandlet to replace New-Deployment using the Azure SDK; hoping this path will not have the timeout issues the commandlet did. But before we go down that route; are there any other scriptable tools I can use to replace the New-Deployment functionality? I looked at Cloudberry for Windows Azure; but that doesn't have a scriptable interface yet. Any constructive input is greatly appreciated.

• Converting an AWT application to SWT/JFace

  I am currently toying with the idea of converting a small/medium sized project from AWT to SWT, although Swing is not totally out of the picture yet. I was thinking about converting the main window to an SWT_AWT bridge object, but I have no idea how the semantics for this work. After that, I plan to update dialog for dialog, but not necessarily within one release. Is this possible? Has someone done a conversion like this and can give me some hints? Is there maybe even a tutorial somewhere out there? Is there maybe even a tool that can automate parts of this? I have tried googling, but to no avail.   I have a large number of rows in a table within which I wish to attach a unique colorpicker (jQuery plugin) to each cell in a particular column identified by unique ids. Given that this plugin javascript appends its code to the level and not to the underlying DOM component that I am accessing above so can't derive what id this pertains to, how can I evaluate the variable during function declaration/definition? • Scriptom (groovy) leaves Excel process running - am I doing something wrong?

  I am using the Scriptom extension to Groovy 1.7.0 to automate some processing using Excel 2007 under Windows XP. This always seems to leave an Excel process running despite my calling quit on the excel activeX object. (There is a passing reference to this phenomenon in the Scriptom example documentation too.) Code looks like: import org.codehaus.groovy.scriptom.ActiveXObject; def xls = new ActiveXObject("Excel.Application") xls.Visible = true // do xls stuff xls.Quit() The visible excel window does disappear but an EXCEL process is left in the task manager (and more processes pile up with each run of the script). There are no error message or exceptions. Can anyone explain why the Excel process is left behind and is there any way to prevent it from happening?

• automatic push to CDN deployment strategy

  Does anyone have ideas for a strategy to push content to a CDN upon deployment? The key issue I'm facing is that we have a site that is available in various contexts: local development, development server, staging, then finally live. The liver version of the site needs to load assets from a domain, which will be pointed to a CDN: assets.domain.com. However, we will have numerous references to the assets pointing to a relative folder, e.g. /images/ in css, possibly in js, and in HTML & source. Our new site will use capistrano for deployment and it may be that we can hook in another build tool (apache ant?) or some custom script to search / replace paths. I am wondering if anyone has had to deal with this issue before and what solutions you put in place to automate managing the CDN in terms of pushing content up to the CDN and managing html & css references to assets in the CDN.
