• Building a minimal plugin architecture in Python.

  I have an application, written in Python, which is used by a fairly technical audience (scientists). I'm looking for a good way to make the application extensible by the users, i.e. a scripting/plugin architecture. I am looking for something extremely lightweight. Most scripts, or plugins, are not going to be developed and distributed by a third-party and installed, but are going to be something whipped up by a user in a few minutes to automate a repeating task, add support for a file format, etc. So plugins should have the absolute minimum boilerplate code, and require no 'installation' other than copying to a folder (so something like setuptools entry points, or the Zope plugin architecture seems like too much.) Are there any systems like this already out there, or any projects that implement a similar scheme that I should look at for ideas / inspiration?

• iPhone / NSArray : How do I format a text file to be read in using arrayWithContentsOfFile

  I have several large word lists and I had been loading them in place in the code as follows: NSArray *dict3 = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"abled",@"about",@"above",@"absurd",@"absurdity", ... but now it is actually causing an exc_bad_access error weirdly, i know it seems implausible but for some reason IT IS causing it. (trust me on this I just spend the better part of a day debugging this crap) Anyway, I'm looking to get these humongous lines of code out of my files but I'm not sure what the best approach is. I guess I could do a plist but I need to figure out how to automate the process. it be easiest if I could just use the text files I've been compiling so if anyone knows how I can format the text file so that the myArray = [NSArray arrayWithContentsOfFile: @"myTextFile.txt"]; will be read in correctly as one word per element in the array it would really be appreciated.   I'm using testng to run selenium based tests in java. I have a bunch of repeated tests. Generally they do all the same except of test name and one parameter. I want to automate generation of it. I was thinking about using factory. Is there a way to generate tests with different name? What would be the best approach to this? As for now I have something like below and I want to create 10 tests like LinkOfInterestIsActiveAfterClick @Test(dependsOnGroups="loggedin") public class SmokeTest extends BrowserStartingStoping{ public void LinkOfInterestIsActiveAfterClick(){ String link = "link_of_interest"; browser.click("*",link); Assert.assertTrue(browser.isLinkActive(link)); } } My xml suite is auto-generated from java code. test names are crucial for logging which link is active, and which one is not.

• Fetch pages translated by Google? (PHP)

  Hi, I have a bunch of big txt files (game walkthroughs) that I need translating from English to French. My first instinct was to host them on a server and use a PHP script to automate the translation process by doing a file_get_contents() and some URL manipulation to get the translated text. Something like: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=fr&sl=en&u=http://mysite.com/faq.txt I found it poses two problems: 1) there are frames 2) the frame src values are relative (ie src="/translate_c?....") so nothing loads. Is there any way to fetch pages translated via Google in PHP (without using their AJAX API as it's really not suitable here)?

  I'd like my application to query a csv file from a secure website. I have no experience with web programming so I'd appreciate detailed instructions. Currently I have the user login to the site, manually query the csv, and have my application load the file locally. I'd like to automate this by having the user enter his login information, authenticating him on the website, and querying the data. The application is written in C# .NET. The url of the site is: https://www2.emidas.com/default.asp. I've tested the following code already and am able to access the file once the user has already authenticated himself and created a manual query. • Merging MySQL Structure and Data

  I have a MySQL database running on a deployment machine which also contains data. Then I have another MySQL database which has evolved in terms of STRUCTURE + DATA for some time. I need a way to merge the changes (ONLY) for both structure and data to the DB in deployment machine without disturbing the existing data. Does anyone know of a tool available which can do this safely. I have had a look at a few comparison tools but I need a tool which can automate the merge operation. Note also that most of the data in the tables is in BINARY so I can't use many file comparison tools. Does any one know of a solution to this? thanks

  When i upload a excel file, i have used COM() to open and automate converting it to xml. It works fine, But when i run it, it always shows the message from Microsoft Excel: A file named ''' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it? I can choose between Yes No and Cancel. normally i would choose Yes. But i dont want users to click on Yes each time. Can i disable this? Please inform me if any relevant codes need to be posted.   I need to start utilizing the interop in my programs to automate several functions in Word and Outlook and I was checking if anyone knew a good place to start. My ultimate goal is for my program to kick off a mail merge, create several different files and save them accordingly, then e-mail the different files to different people based upon who needs what. So any help on learning how to use the interop properly would be greatly appreciated. I am currently using Visual Studio 2008 and Office 2007 and use vb.net to write my programs. • Self-signed ceritificates for many users/browsers/sites

  Here is my problem - I have a lot of users using different browsers accessing many internal web sites using https. I can create my own Certificate Authority, than create a certificate for each server and after that have all the users import it. Obviously, it cannot work in reality - there are too many users and too many sites, and some sites will be added in the future. I'm looking for a way to automate this. Is there a way to create a certificate so that all major browsers (IE, FF, Opera, Chrome and Safari) would trust it for all servers ? If so, what is the best way to install it automatically in all major browsers ?

  I have recently started learning python and django and working on a project that includes building a website for collecting information from customers. I am currently trying to figure out best way to isolate the customer data (collected information is sensitive and should only be accessible by customer and the service provider). I found this post Postgresql - one database for everyone, or one-database per customer and my question is that can I automate the model inheritance with customer creation via admin? To be specific, when save() is called for adding customer via django admin, this should create the customer specific tables (create a new set of tables with 'company_name' -prefix). For more information of the environment, I have extended the basic user registration with custom UserProfile adding 'company' and 'role' fields for each user. Upon login, the 'company' of the user will be checked to filter out tables without the 'company_name' prefix. 'Role' will further filter the which company-specific tables and set rights (view, edit). will appreciate any suggestions if more elegant methods could be used to solve the data isolation problem than model inheritance.

• Bulletproof way to DROP and CREATE a database under Continuous Integration.

  I am attempting to drop and recreate a database from my CI setup. But I'm finding it difficult to automate the dropping and creation of the database, which is to be expected given the complexities of the db being in use. Sometimes the process hangs, errors out with "db is currently in use" or just takes too long. I don't care if the db is in use, I want to kill it and create it again. Does some one have a straight shot method to do this? alternatively does anyone have experience dropping all objects in the db instead of dropping the db itself?   Hello, I am working on a cloud application. When I test out the application on my computer I want to have my connection string set as follows in ServiceConfiguration.cscfg: <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="UseDevelopmentStorage=true" /> When I publish to the cloud I need to have it set as follows: <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=xxxx;AccountKey=yyy" /> I keep going from one environment to the other and keep having to change the DataConnectionString. Is there a way that I can automate this? I looked around and can't see any examples but I'm sure some others have the same problem as me. Thanks, Nancy

• Newbie Question: Read and Process a List of Text Files

  I'm completely new to .NET and am trying as a first step to write a text processing program. The task is simple: I have a list of 10,000 text files stored in one folder, and I'm trying to read each one, store it as a string variable, then run it through a series of functions, then save the final output to another folder. • Running matlab in the background

  Hi, I am running matlab on 48 virtual machines and would like to automate it. I ssh into the machines then use matlab -r matlab_command > outfile.txt & to get the process to run in the background and run fine when I logout. The only problem is that when i jobs my process is stopped and won't start until I fg ^z bg. Is there a matlab flag so that I can run it in the background without having it stop? Thanks, Mike

As far as I know this is about metaprogramming and aspect-oriented programming. How do I get acquainted with modern tools available quickly so that I don't invent one more bicycle developing my own?

• Automating site interaction

  I'm working with a CMS and need to import data to it using typical html forms. The data itself is in csv files with one page per row. Such is the CMS that importing directly to db isn't possible due to the complexity of the design. It's pretty important that i "fake" usual user interaction because the CMS does a lot of background work that's crucial for the import. Basically, for each row in the csv file, I need to copy a csv column to a html textfield, or select a checkbox, or click a certain button. One major issue is mapping the data in the csv to actions in the CMS. So if one column contains the string 'foobar' is really means "set the firstName dropdown widget to 'foobar'". Is there a tool to automate this? I´ve been looking at AutoHotKey, Selendium, Web-Harvester and many other tools but I'm not convinced they are the correct tools. The main problem is being able to interact with the html pages in a easy way.

  Imagine I've got the following in a text file opened under Emacs: some 34 word 30 another 38 thing 59 to 39 say 10 here 47 and I want to turn into this, adding 1 to every number made of 2 digits: some 35 word 31 another 39 thing 60 to 40 say 11 here 48 (this is a short example, my actual need is on a much bigger list, not my call) How can I do this from Emacs? I don't mind calling some external Perl/sed/whatever magic as long as the call is made directly from Emacs and operates only on the marked region I want. How would you automate this from Emacs? I think the answer I'm thinking of consist in calling shell-command-on-region and replace the region by the output... But I'm not sure as to how to concretely do this.

• Using Durable Services for saving wcf instances

  I am currently creating a service which connects to a DAL and that can run a few stored procedures, one of the issues I am facing is that for certain times of the month, we can't update the database, (at the moment this is done manually. This is done via the user adding a note to their calendar) But I would like to automate this process, one of the possible solutions I can think of using is a durable service. When the date is lets say the 1st of the month, the Update/Insert/Delete instances can get saved to a database, and then ran after that date in a batch. Is this the intended use of durable services ? Is there a better route I could possibly take ?

• Mirror a website with httrack while executing javascript

  I want do save a mirror of www.youtube.com/tv. I obviously do not want to save the videos. I want the code running the website in a local copy, everything else can stay remote. The code I want is mainly contained in 2 files: live.js and app-prod.js. I tried using httrack. I have issue parsing the javascript to load anything past the first file: live.js. The %P parameter does not help. httrack www.youtube.com/tv +* -r6 --mirror -%P -j It doesn't go further than live.js because some javascript needs to be executed to load the next file. I know I can do this manually with any browser. I want to automate the process. Is httrack able to do this by itself? If yes, how?

Firstly it's not updating the entries in doxygen.config, perhaps one needs to put the settings in the exact hierarchy as it appears in the native doxygen file (?). • How to detect Out Of Memory condition?

  I have an application running on Websphere Application Server 6.0 and it crashes nearly every day because of Out-Of-Memory. From verbose GC is certain there are the memory leaks(many of them) Unfortunately the application is provided by external vendor and getting things fixed is slow & painful process. As part of the process I need to gather the logs and heapdumps each time the OOM occurs. Now I'm looking for some way how to automate it. Fundamental problem is how to detect OOM condition. One way would be to create shell script which will periodically search for new heapdumps. This approach seems me a kinda dirty. Another approach might be to leverage the JMX somehow. But I have little or no experience in this area and don't have much idea how to do it. Or is in WAS some kind of trigger/hooks for this? Thank you very much for every advice!
